District Newsletter: Happy Thanksgiving, Teaching Ex...
Hello WCCUSD Community, I hope that you have had a great week. As we begin the holiday break, I want to share a few acknowledgments, celebrations and upcoming events with you. Please click here or see my superintendent’s message below. Sincerely, Dr. Kenneth Chris Hurst Superintendent Schools will be closed for the holiday break on Monday, November 21 - Friday, November 25. District offices will be closed on Thursday, November 24 - 25, 2022. Schools and offices will convene on Monday, November 28. Have a safe Thanksgiving, WCCUSD! Thanksgiving Break COVID Testing With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, we are providing additional testing resources for our community’s safety. We have secured enough COVID-19 at-home rapid test kits from the California Department of Public Health and Contra Costa County Health Services to provide all students and staff with a box containing one test kit. These tests were distributed to sites and sent home with students this week, prior to Thanksgiving break. We ask that these tests be taken before coming to school on Monday, November 28. The test should be taken on Sunday, November 27. Please do not come to school or work if you have a positive test. Proof of negative tests should be reported to school sites, either with a picture of the test or the test itself. Thank you for everything you are doing to keep our community safe. Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day at King and Ellerhorst King and Ellerhorst Elementary schools held a walk-to-school day on Monday, November 14 to honor Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges. Ruby Bridges is a lifelong activist for racial equality. She was the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on November 14, 1960. Students, families and staff at King met at the Richmond Courthouse on 37th and Bissell Ave. and Ellerhorst students and families began their walk at Amber Swartz Park in Pinole on Savage Ave. at 8 a.m. Both communities wore purple “Walk to School Day” hats and t-shirts, and walked to school displaying Ruby Bridges Walk to School signs in solidarity with students and schools across the country who participated in the annual tradition to promote safe and inclusive schools and communities for all. Walk to School Day is sponsored by AAA in partnership with the Ruby Bridges Foundation . Community Partners Help to Evolve the Verde K-8 School Playground with Urban Tree Planting Initiative Students at Verde K-8 School received an upgrade to their playground blacktop when community partners from UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, 100k Trees for Humanity, and County Supervisor John Goia’s office came together on Tuesday, November 15 to plant 27 trees on the playground space. “The playground had no trees on the blacktop,” Verde K-8 Principal Eric Acosta-Verprauskus said. “It is an area that we wanted to beautify and make absolutely wonderful for our students, so they could find shade and enjoy nature as they enjoy their day every day at school.” The tree planting project is part of the 100k Trees for Humanity initiative to plant 100,000 trees and plants in major urban cities to improve the city’s climate and increase urban carbon sequestration capacity to help cities meet carbon reduction goals. “We couldn’t have done it without our partners,” Acosta-Verprauskus said. “It’s really beautiful and joyful for us to have something that will literally be part of the school’s landscape for years to come.” Teaching Excellence Awards Nomination Now Open For 35 years, the Ed Fund has recognized the district’s best teachers through the Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA). We believe these educators truly exemplify what it means to place students at the forefront of the educational experience. The Ed Fund wants to acknowledge and celebrate the tremendous work our teachers have done and continue to do throughout the West Contra Costa Unified School District to support the vast needs of our students. This year, we are proud to announce the 2022-2023 Teaching Excellence Awards. Our 2022-2023 nomination form is now open! Please submit your nomination(s) by January 3, 2023. Nystrom Elementary Mafanikio Students Attend Premiere Screening of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Forty students from Nystrom Elementary in Richmond were treated to a special premiere screening of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, at AMC Bay Street in Emeryville on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The trip came courtesy of The Calculus Roundtable, a Richmond-based nonprofit that provides math programs to underserved students. The students in attendance are members of the Mafanikio Academic Program, an after-school program at Nystrom that teaches math coding and STEM to students. A group of 15 Nystrom staff members and parent volunteers joined the children at the premiere. West Contra Costa Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Hurst and his wife also attended the film, which is celebrated for being the first big-budget superhero movie franchise featuring a Black hero, director and majority Black cast. Nystrom School Community Outreach Worker Andre Shumake described the film as high-energy and delivering on positivity for the kids. Teachers said kids reported the next day on the film with a high level of enthusiasm. “The joy that is brought to our kids, was simply wonderful,” Shumake said. “The smiles said it all.” Downer Elementary School Hosts Special Olympics Harvest Field Day Downer Elementary School hosted a Special Olympics Harvest Field Day on Thursday, November 17 to provide activities that promote inclusivity and unity for all students with and without disabilities. Over 400 students at Downer participated in unified activities including the sack race, egg spoon relay, obstacle courses, bean bag ring toss, chalk art, bubble dance and lap runs. “At Downer, we create an environment that is inclusive of everyone,” Downer Elementary School Principal Chris Read said. “Inclusivity is modeled and highlighted at the Special Olympics Harvest Field Day, and each participant is encouraged to make inclusivity a best practice.” Last year, Downer staff developed a team that included student ambassadors, teachers, the Downer school community outreach worker and the adapted physical education specialist to create several unified sports activities for students, which earned Downer Elementary School a Unified Champion School recognition from Special Olympics Northern California . “Being a Unified Champion School means a lot to our school community and it has been such a pleasure to work with Coach Isaac Chavez, an Adapted Physical Education Specialist in our district to help us become a Unified Champion School,” Read said. “We now see the rewards in our yard, in our classrooms, and within our school community.” Human Resources Virtual Workshop will Highlight Classified Job Opportunities in WCCUSD, November 30 The next virtual Human Resources workshop will be held on Wednesday, November 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. to highlight open positions on our classified team.
