Superintendent's Message: Community Update Regarding...
Dear WCCUSD Community, We recognize that immigration enforcement actions ordered by the Trump administration have created fear and uncertainty for our community and many of our families. We want to assure you that WCCUSD stands with our students, families, and staff during these challenging times. Our priority is to ensure that students and families feel safe, supported, and welcomed in our schools each day. Immigration Support & Resources To provide continued support, we have launched a dedicated webpage with immigration-related resources, which will be updated weekly. This page includes legal assistance, Know Your Rights information, and guidance for families who may be affected by immigration enforcement. Additionally, our school site administrators have received guidance on the protection of student and family information, requirements and protocols and related to government requests and potential government visits, which include restricting campus access to the public accessible area only (the office area during school operating hours) without a warrant. We will continually prioritize and support students and families and their need for resources and information. We encourage families to connect with their school’s leadership team if they need further assistance or resources. Visit our Immigration Resources page: www.wccusd.net/immigration-resources Clarification on Circulating Flyer We are also aware of a flyer circulating on social media regarding a peaceful protest scheduled for February 2, 2025, with plans to meet at Richmond High School. While we respect the right of individuals to organize and express their concerns, we want to clarify that this event is not organized or sponsored by Richmond High School or WCCUSD. At WCCUSD, we value student advocacy and the right to express concerns about issues that impact our community. However, our focus remains on ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning. We encourage families to talk with their students about their participation in events that take place outside of school-sponsored activities. We understand that this is a difficult time for many in our community. WCCUSD remains committed to provide resources, support, and information to ensure that all students feel protected and valued in our schools. We will keep our community updated and remain committed to standing with our families. Sincerely, Kim Moses, Ed.D Interim Superintendent West Contra Costa Unified School District

Superintendent's Message Regarding Immigration Matte...
Dear WCCUSD Community, We understand that the recent congressional and presidential election results may be causing anxiety and uncertainty within our schools and communities regarding immigration matters. Our commitment to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students is unwavering. This is reaffirmed by our recently approved anti-racism policy and Resolution No. 2425-54 In Support of all our Students, Staff and Families Regardless of Race, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Sexual Orientation, or Immigration Status , which outlines the following key protections for immigration matters: No Immigration Enforcement on School Grounds: Immigration enforcement activities are strictly prohibited on any WCCUSD school or department property in accordance with Board Policy_5145.13. Protection of Student and Family Information: District employees, personnel, and contractors are prohibited from sharing personal information about students or their families, including immigration status, with immigration authorities. This includes any data systems. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) are longstanding federal laws that further protect student data. We also understand that our seniors are currently completing documents related to funding higher education. We want to share that historically, the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and/or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) has not been shared, we do not know what shifts will occur with the new administration. The National Association of College Attainment Network urges that families make a “considered decision”. Their guidance is here for your reference . The California Student Aid Commission references California Senate Bill 54 to assure families that California has model policies for protecting student and family information. They encourage students from mixed-status families to use the CADAA application. WCCUSD schools and offices serve as safe spaces for all students and families. If you or your family are experiencing fear or anxiety related to immigration enforcement, please know that you can seek help, assistance, and support from any District school or office. We are committed to providing ongoing support and resources for our students and families. Please stay tuned for further updates and resources on creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. In Service and Community, Kim Moses, Ed.D Interim Superintendent West Contra Costa Unified School District

United in Purpose: Moving Forward with Our Shared Vi...
Dear WCCUSD Parents, In the wake of a close and hard-fought election, I want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve been on together as a school district. Elections are a time of passion and conviction, where we, as a community, come together to express our values and vision for the future of our students and schools. While there is understandably both excitement and disappointment following the results, I want to remind everyone of the core principle that unites us: we are all here for the success and well-being of our children. To those who are feeling disappointed by the outcome, I want you to know that your voices matter, and your dedication to our schools and community has not gone unnoticed. We honor your commitment to making a difference, and your efforts will continue to shape the direction we move in. As a district, we will continue to listen to every voice, and we are committed to fostering a collaborative environment where everyone’s input is valued. We are all on the same team when it comes to ensuring our students thrive. To those celebrating today, congratulations. Your vision and passion have resonated with many, and we look forward to working with you to bring our shared goals to life. However, the work ahead is not just about one victory, but about continuing to build a stronger, more inclusive, and forward-thinking community where every child has the opportunity to succeed. Together, we will continue to lead with integrity, compassion, and a focus on student success. As we move forward, I want to assure you all—staff, students, families, and community members—that the safety, well-being, and support of every individual in our district will remain a top priority. We will continue to work as a united team, valuing differing perspectives and building bridges to move us forward in a way that lifts us all. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the students of our district. No matter the election outcome, our shared mission remains the same: to provide an excellent education and a supportive, inclusive environment for all. Let’s move forward together—with respect, hope, and a focus on the future of our students. In partnership, Dr. Kenneth C. Hurst, Ed.D. Superintendent, WCCUSD

WCCUSD Launches Intramural Flag Football League Exciting news for high school athletes in the WCCUSD! We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new intramural flag football program designed to boost female participation in sports. This initiative supports California's commitment to expanding opportunities for women in athletics, which has led to an impressive tripling of flag football participation since last year. This initiative not only promotes teamwork and athletic development but also serves as a vital fundraising opportunity for the program. The inaugural games of the intramural league will kick off this Saturday at Pinole Valley High, featuring four teams from six high schools. The games, each lasting 40 minutes, will be played on half of the field. Kennedy high hosted its first practice earlier this week to gear up for the exciting weekend ahead. All participants are volunteers, making this a community-driven effort rather than an official league.Join us in supporting our young athletes as they embark on this exciting journey in women’s flag football! Record Turnout at Annual College & Career Fair The College & Career Team, in partnership with the Early Academic Opportunity Program (EAOP) at UC Berkeley, successfully hosted the annual College & Career Fair. This year saw a record turnout, with over 600 students and parents attending the event. Originally, 300 students registered, but attendance far exceeded expectations, reaching approximately 400 students. The fair featured representatives from 44 colleges and 16 skilled trades, offering students valuable information about post-secondary education and career opportunities. This was the largest turnout in the event’s history, marking a significant milestone for the district’s commitment to supporting students' college and career readiness. Riverside Elementary Showcases Solar-Powered Science Projects Sixth-grade students in Ms. Harrison’s class at Riverside Elementary demonstrated creativity and engineering skills through their science projects, which focused on renewable energy. Students worked in pairs to design and build mini solar-powered cars using small solar panels. The event drew an audience from younger grades, who marveled at the solar-powered cars as they rolled around campus. This hands-on experience provided students with an engaging introduction to the principles of renewable energy and sustainable engineering. Complete the Educational Benefits Form in PowerSchool - Deadline Approaching The deadline to complete the annual Educational Benefits form is fast approaching! The deadline to complete the form is Thursday, October 31st. This critical form allows the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) to secure millions of dollars in funding for vital programs and resources. Additionally, the form helps determine eligibility for programs like the Bus Pass and college exam fee waivers. The form can be completed online via PowerSchool, or paper copies are available upon request at each school site. Congratulations to Middle College High School and Greenwood Academy for achieving 100% completion. Kudos to De Anza High School, Downer Elementary, and Valley View Elementary for reaching 90% and above completion. Keep up the great work! Lincoln Elementary PTA Organizes Cultural Celebration Lincoln Elementary is taking major strides in community engagement with the establishment of a new PTA, led by enthusiastic parents and supported by Community School Director Marco Villanueva and SCOW Evelia Agredano. Within just three weeks, the PTA organized the “PRIDE in Your CULTURE Day” and a Hispanic Heritage Month parade. These initiatives reflect the power of collaboration and community spirit at Lincoln Elementary, as parents and staff work together to create meaningful cultural experiences for students and families. Two El Cerrito High School Students Named 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists For the second year in a row, El Cerrito High School is proud to announce that it has at least one student recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Semifinalist, and this year, they have two: Oliver Akin and Daniel Seo. These two outstanding seniors are among over 16,000 Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, representing less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide. Oliver and Daniel now have the opportunity to advance to the Finalist stage of the competition, joining the ranks of students vying for a portion of nearly $26 million in National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring. To advance, they must submit detailed scholarship applications, showcasing not only their academic excellence but also leadership qualities, participation in community and school activities, and other honors. Around 95 percent of Semifinalists are expected to achieve Finalist standing, and approximately half of those will be named National Merit Scholars. Please join us in congratulating Oliver and Daniel on their incredible achievements. We are excited to see them continue to excel and wish them the best as they move forward in this prestigious competition! Riverside Elementary Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Riverside Elementary School hosted a vibrant celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month, highlighting culture and community. Verkada System Update: Volunteer Process
Dear WCCUSD Community, We are lifting the pause on the use of the Verkada platform for volunteer clearance and returning to the new process that was initially shared with the community. Volunteers can be cleared in two ways: Online or In-Person . Volunteer applicants can apply HERE to become a volunteer at your school site. You may also use the updated volunteer flye r with the instructions below to access the application via phone by scanning the QR code. Volunteers will need a state identification or consulate card to apply, and clearance can take up to a week after the application is received. School sites will receive a notification of who has been cleared by the Family & Community Engagement Office(FACE). Volunteers will receive a name tag at the school site once the school site has confirmed clearance. For those who prefer to apply in-person , please schedule a meeting with the Family and Community Engagement team. This will allow one week for processing. The FACE team will then contact you to arrange a suitable appointment date and time. Please note that volunteers should not visit the District office without a prior appointment. Volunteers who were badged in previous school years will also need to complete applications in Verkada to be accepted into our new system. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process. In Community, Kenneth C. Hurst, Sr., Ed.D Superintendent
