Schools Open Friday, January 30
We have received requests to clarify our attendance and safety policies in light of a nationwide day of action scheduled for Friday, January 30. We are also aware of social media posts encouraging students to leave school around 6th period tomorrow. Yakima School District is a public school system and does not take a political position on public issues. Our responsibility is to provide a safe learning environment for all students. All schools will be open and operating on a regular schedule. As always, students are expected to attend all classes and remain on campus for the full school day. We recognize that students may have strong feelings about current events. Civic engagement is an important part of growing into responsible citizens. With that right comes responsibility: making safe choices and understanding consequences. Per district policy, students who leave their assigned class without permission will be marked absent, and standard attendance policies will apply. This includes students who remain on school grounds but are not in their assigned setting. For anyone who chooses to participate in off-campus activities, please prioritize safety. Stay with trusted adults or people you know, remain aware of your surroundings, and keep your phone charged. Yakima School District is committed to serving every student. Washington state law protects the right of all students to attend public school. Our schools are safe spaces for learning. Counselors are available for anyone who needs support. Thank you.Thursday, Jan 29 2026

Lions Pool and Yakima School District
Lions Pool and Yakima School District We are aware that there are questions in the community about the future of Lions Pool. Lions Pool is owned and operated by the City of Yakima , not by the Yakima School District. The District does not make decisions about whether the pool remains open or closes and does not take political positions related to City funding decisions. In November 2025, the City of Yakima’s proposed levy did not pass by Yakima voters. Following the levy result, the City shared publicly that it will need to reduce expenses. One option discussed is closing Lions Pool after the current high school boys swim season ends in February 2026. Yakima School District pays a usage fee to the City of Yakima for school swim teams to use Lions Pool. The pool serves students from multiple school districts across the region, including teams that participate through cooperative arrangements. Those usage fees, plus other pool use income still leaves the pool operations in a $500,000 deficit. If Lions Pool were to close, it could affect high school swim teams and students who are learning to swim or preparing to participate in future school athletics. Swimming plays an important role in student opportunity, safety, and extracurricular participation. Yakima School District is communicating with City officials to understand proposals and timelines, monitoring potential impacts to students and school programs, and considering options to support continuity of student opportunities if changes occur. We will continue to share information as decisions that affect students and school programs are confirmed by the City.

Winter Weather Communication
Dear families, staff, and secondary students, Winter weather will soon be here, and now is a good time to prepare your household. Our schools are preparing too. When conditions change overnight, district staff are up early driving bus routes, coordinating with the city, and putting teams in place to clear hazards at our buildings. We share official information about delays or closures by 6:00 a.m. on: • www.YSD7.org • Local news media (note: some reports have been incorrect in the past; our website is the official source) • ParentSquare, sent instantly to families, staff, and secondary students Frequently Asked Questions Will buses use snow routes? If the Yakima School District calls a delay, buses will also be delayed. Buses travel slowly for safety and may run behind schedule. If a route is more than 30 minutes late, we will post an update to ParentSquare. Only four routes have designated snow routes due to steep hills. Please check whether your child’s route has a snow route and where the alternate stop is located: www.YSD7.org/busroutes . What time will the bus arrive on a two-hour delay? Add two hours to your normal stop time. Example: A 7:10 a.m. stop becomes a 9:10 a.m. stop. What if school is not delayed, but my bus route changes to a snow route? If school is running on time but a specific bus route must shift to its snow route, the Transportation Department will send a notification directly to the families of students assigned to that route only. How is breakfast handled during a delay? Elementary: Breakfast is available in the cafeteria for any child who wants to eat. Child Nutrition staff do not provide supervision. Breakfast will be available until lunch service. Middle schools: Breakfast is available as students enter the building. High schools: A “second chance” breakfast will not be offered. Breakfast is still available before classes begin in the cafeteria. Will there be morning classes at YV-Tech on a delay? No. Will there be morning preschool on a delay? No. How are after-school athletics and activities handled during winter weather? The district athletic director, in collaboration with the superintendent, determines whether games or practices are rescheduled, moved indoors, or canceled. If there is a status change for athletics or activities, your coach or supervisor will contact you directly. What about 3rd-party facility rentals (AAU, etc.)? If a facility closes, the Facility Rentals Department will contact the group that rented the space. If the district closes for the day due to winter weather, all facility rentals are automatically canceled. Groups may follow up with Facility Rentals at 509-573-7020 What should staff know about reporting expectations? Staff are responsible for knowing their reporting time rules during a delay and how make-up time works during a closure. Any staff member with questions should check with their manager. Thank you for taking time to plan ahead for winter weather and stay informed.

Supporting All Families in Yakima School District: I...
Dear Yakima Families, With national conversations about immigration and its impact on families, we want to reassure you that Yakima School District remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting all students, regardless of immigration status. Recent updates from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) align with the protections and programs that the Yakima School District already have in place, including: Privacy Protection: We do not ask for or share immigration status information. Migrant Education and Newcomer Programs: Providing academic, social, and language support to students and families. Language Access Services: Offering translation and interpretation to support family engagement. Families are encouraged to stay informed about their rights. Visit these resources for more information: YSD Immigration Support Pag e If you have questions or need assistance, please reach out to your school or the district office. Thank you, Yakima School District [Thursday, Jan 22 at 2:55 PM] Re: Supporting All Families: Protections for Students in Washington Public Schools Dear Yakima Families, We know immigration topics can create stress for students and families. We want you to know Washington State has clear protocols for public schools, and Yakima School District follows them. What Washington law and OSPI guidance say: Every child can attend public school. Schools must enroll and serve students regardless of citizenship or immigration status. We do not ask about immigration status. We only collect information needed for enrollment and services. Student records are protected. Student information is private and is not shared without written permission, except in limited situations required by law (such as a valid court order). Staff do not enforce immigration law. School employees do not have the authority to enforce federal immigration law. If immigration enforcement activity occurs on or near a school: Our staff are trained to follow a specific process: Any person seeking access to staff, students, records, or school areas is directed to the principal or designee. The principal or designee will refer them to the superintendent's office on 4th Avenue. The district superintendent and legal counsel review any documentation. Access is not provided without valid legal requirements, and access is limited to what the law requires. The district makes a reasonable effort to notify the parent or guardian about enforcement actions involving a student. Supports we already provide in Yakima School District Migrant Education and newcomer supports Language access (translation and interpretation) Family engagement support and connection to community resources What families can do now: Make sure your school has up-to-date emergency contacts (who can pick up your child). If you want, talk with your child about a simple plan: who they go to first at school if they feel worried. For more information and local resources, visit the YSD Immigration information online (https://www.ysd7.org/resources/school/immigration) or contact your child’s principal or the district legal department (509-573-7010). Thank you, Yakima School District
