  • September is Suicide Prevention Month

Dear Yakima School District families, staff, and students, The Yakima School District cares deeply about the health and safety of our students. This month, we are focusing on suicide prevention. Our goal is to make it easier for students and families to talk about mental health and to know where to find help. Warning Signs of a Crisis Watch for these signs that someone may be in crisis: Talking about wanting to die or feeling hopeless. Pulling away from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy. Big changes in sleeping or eating habits. Extreme mood swings or increased use of alcohol or drugs. Giving away belongings or saying goodbye. How to Get Help Talk to someone you trust like a friend, family member, or school staff member. Some YSD staff have extra training in suicide prevention and can connect students with help. Call 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It’s free, confidential, and available 24/7. Call the Yakima County Crisis Line: 1-888-544-9986 (also on the back of every staff and student ID badge). • Air Quality Update for Thursday 9/4 – After School A...

Dear Yakima Families, Staff, and Secondary Students, Air quality in Yakima has reached 175 AQI (Unhealthy). To protect student health, all  outdoor athletic practices, games, and activities are canceled for today. At Eisenhower and Davis High Schools, some practices and activities will continue indoors. However, there is not enough room for all sports and activities to move inside, so students must check in directly with their athletic coach or activity supervisor for instructions. Both schools have modern HVAC systems to support safe indoor participation (thank you, voters!). Any student experiencing breathing difficulties or other symptoms should notify their athletic coach or activity supervisor immediately. Thank you for your understanding as we prioritize student safety. Sara Cordova District Athletic Director Yakima School District

  • Welcome to the 2025–2026 School Year!

Dear Yakima School District Families, Staff, and Secondary Students, Today marks the first official day of kindergarten, while grades 1–12 began last week. The opening of the 2025–2026 school year began with students, families, and staff returning with energy and excitement. These first few days showed our shared commitment to helping every student learn and grow. The first day was an example of partnerships, as Downtown Yakima Rotary Club donated backpacks and school supplies to students at McClure Elementary School. This year's president of Rotary attended McClure as a student. This is the third year of Rotary supporting students at a select elementary and living their motto, “Service Above Self.”  Meanwhile, our first building emergency happened Thursday when the power went out at Adams Elementary School. This reminded us of the strong leadership we benefit from, as operations, building administration, and district office staff responded quickly to respond to Pacific Power's issue. Teachers, food service workers, and custodians stayed calm and flexible, turning the moment into something memorable as many Adams students had lunch outside. We continue to focus on the goals in our strategic plan : improving student attendance, strengthening early learning, expanding dual language opportunities, and helping every student graduate on time. These priorities reflect our belief that education is not just about academics. We will work as a community this fall to refresh our strategic plan. If you would like to be involved in the strategic plan refresh, please  reach out to me . It is about preparing every child for the future with support from our community. We are inspired by the progress we have made together over the last several years, as our Student Senate continues to help guide district decisions. Partnerships with families, community organizations, and local leaders are stronger than ever. Our staff—including teachers, custodians, bus drivers, food service workers, and many others—work hard each day to keep schools safe, welcoming, and ready for learning. Let us start this new year with energy and purpose. Each student brings their own story, dreams, and potential. When we welcome them with open arms and high expectations, we show our commitment to equity, excellence, and opportunity for all. Financially, we recognize that school districts across Washington, including the Yakima School District, continue to face an unfair funding system. While we keep pushing for fair solutions legislatively at the state level, we remain committed to protecting the classroom experience for students. Our guiding principle is simple: every decision must be what is best for children. Thank you for trusting us with your children. Together we will make the 2025–2026 school year one of growth and success. With gratitude and determination, Dr. Trevor Greene Superintendent, Yakima School District

  • Update on Grounds Appearance and Water Conservation

Dear Yakima Community, You may have noticed that our school grounds have not appeared as lush in recent weeks, and I want to provide some context. Earlier this summer, the City of Yakima asked all users, including the school district, to reduce water consumption due to state-mandated cutbacks that lowered available supply to 43% of normal levels. In response, the request to comply with conservation requirements by scaling back irrigation across our schools to protect this critical community resource was honored. As a result, the appearance of some fields and lawns temporarily declined. Over the past two weeks, however, we have begun to carefully restore irrigation schedules within the city’s guidelines, and we are already seeing improvement. Our grounds teams are working diligently to ensure that school sites look welcoming and ready as we begin the new year on August 27, 2025. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we balance the important work of maintaining our campuses with our shared responsibility to conserve water during this challenging time. Respectfully, Dr. Trevor Greene Superintendent, Yakima School District

  • Student laptop and the coming school year

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students, We hope you had a wonderful summer! Where did the time go? It’s hard to believe, but the first day of school is just around the corner. As we prepare to welcome students back, please take a moment to locate your child’s assigned school laptop and charger (if they were taken home over the summer). If the device hasn’t been used recently, we recommend turning it on now to ensure it’s working as expected. If you discover any issues, please bring the device to Technology Services as soon as possible so we can service it before school begins. Technology Services 901 Whitman Street  Union Gap, WA 98903 Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s educational journey.
