  • Penguin's Raft - 2nd Week of February 2026

Penguin's Raft 2nd Week of February, 2026 A Message from Mr. Reimann Dear Moraine Families, We are looking forward to celebrating our district-wide Inclusion Week! For those of you that have heard me speak about public education, you know that I have chosen this profession very intentionally. Public Educators work tirelessly each day to make sure there are opportunities and access for all. I am proud to work in a school district that has grounded themselves in our Commitment for All. As we start the week, I am reminded that diversity drives our success and the passion to serve our entire community makes us stronger. Happy Inclusion Week! Note about the upcoming Mid-Winter Break: Making sure that our students, staff, and families have the opportunity to detach themselves from school completely—physically and mentally—on the days they’re off is an important part of our commitment to honoring the whole person. Leader in Me calls this “Sharpening the Saw”.  Please note that our office plans on following this same advice, and as a result, there will be no Penguin’s Raft during the Mid-Winter Break. Please look for updates after we return! In this newsletter, you'll find information on: NEW - i-Ready Diagnostic Scores Yearbook Cover Contest Entries are due Tuesday, February 10th! Despite the oppressive environment of segregated Alabama, Johnson’s creation won first place at a University of Alabama science fair—though the era’s systemic racism meant no academic offers followed his clear victory. Undeterred, he earned degrees in mechanical and nuclear engineering from Tuskegee University, eventually joining NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It was during his work on the historic Galileo mission to Jupiter that a mishap with a heat pump experiment inspired him to create a high-powered water gun, a design he perfected at night while working on stealth bomber technology for the Air Force by day. Overcoming the financial hurdle of a $200,000 manufacturing quote and a seven-year search for a partner, Johnson finally launched the toy in 1990. Rebranded as the Super Soaker in 1991, it became a global phenomenon, selling over 250 million units and grossing more than $1 billion. Today, Johnson holds over 100 patents and uses his success to mentor young scientists of color, addressing the disparity where minorities make up 30% of the population but only roughly 10% of the technical workforce. His legacy is one of profound resilience, turning a bathroom experiment into a billion-dollar industry while actively working to ensure the next generation of innovators isn't left on the sidelines. While we all wish we could protect our students from traumatic events in our communities, the reality is that crises such as community violence, political unrest, and natural disasters are all too common. These situations disrupt the stability of life at home and at school and can deeply impact a child’s sense of safety and well-being. • Bobcat Broadcast - February 6, 2026

Bobcat Broadcast Amerman Elementary School - February 6, 2026 A Message From Mrs. Caudill This week, a friend said something that has stayed with me: “Sometimes life is as wide as it is deep.” There are seasons when life feels wide, when we’re juggling a dozen things at once, moving from activity to activity, barely pausing to catch our breath. And there are seasons when life feels deep, when we’re working through big questions, big feelings, or big changes. And sometimes, those seasons happen at the exact same time. As all of you know, life doesn’t move in a straight line. It stretches, dips, expands, and surprises us. And for our children, this is especially true. One of the ways we help students navigate both the “wide” and the “deep” parts of life is through this month’s habit, Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Habit 5 reminds us that listening, real listening, is what helps us slow down, connect, and make sense of all the things happening around and within us. When students feel heard, they are better able to handle the “depth” of big emotions and the “width” of busy days. When they practice listening to others, they build empathy, patience, and stronger relationships, skills they’ll need in every season of life. As adults, we know that the world can be noisy, fast, exciting, and overwhelming all at once. Our children experience that too, even if their challenges look different from ours. By modeling Habit 5 at home, pausing, listening with our eyes and hearts, and seeking to understand first, we give them a powerful tool to navigate whatever life brings, whether it stretches wide or dives deep. • Penguin's Raft - 1st Week of February 2026

Penguin's Raft 1st Week of February, 2026 A Message from Mr. Reimann Dear Moraine Families, As a school principal, I have A LOT of conversations. One of my favorite conversations to have is in my role as a parent :) I have three kids - Elizabeth (almost 13!), Lydia (10), and Joseph (9) and a fantastic wife, Mandy (married for 16 years!). Humility, patience, grace, understanding, compassion, humanity....all things that this parenting journey has taught me. But it's hard. And harder on some days than others. Which is why I'm glad I don't have to be on this parenting journey alone. We have two exciting, upcoming options to connect with other parents looking to "Sharpen their Saw" : Join Moraine parents at the Moraine Parent Learning Session on Thursday, February 5th, from 6:30–7:30 PM. We have taken care of the logistics: child care and pizza will be provided! You can skip the stress of cooking dinner and head straight to school knowing the kids are fed and supervised while we learn together as parents :) RSVP for the Parent Learning Session HERE AND our district-wide Parent Camp on Saturday, February 7th at Northville High School. See the flyer below for more details! On a separate note, we had a great week at Moraine as we braved the cold for 4 straight days, welcomed Benji (our Therapy Dog), and had an INCREDIBLE International Night on Friday night. It was a blessing to see our families share their cultures and stories. After securing a home court at Harlem's Renaissance Ballroom through a pioneering naming-rights deal, Douglas assembled a roster of legendary talent that fundamentally changed basketball. By prioritizing quick passing and a fluid, fast-paced style over the era’s slow, methodical play, the Rens transformed the game's mechanics. Their dominance was absolute, evidenced by an astounding career record of 2,318 wins and only 381 losses, including a professional record of 88 consecutive victories during the 1932–33 season and a world championship title in 1939. The team’s success was achieved in the face of relentless adversity and systemic segregation that barred Black athletes from the burgeoning NBA until 1950. While touring the country, the Rens endured the indignities of Jim Crow, often forced to eat in restaurant kitchens or sleep in local jails for safety when hotels refused them service. Despite facing racist violence and hostility from fans and opponents alike, they continued to win, proving their excellence on the court and shattering myths of racial inferiority. The legacy of Douglas and his players, seven of whom are in the Hall of Fame, remains a cornerstone of basketball history, marking a triumphant push against segregation that paved the way for future generations of Black athletes.     March is Reading Month Student Authored Books March is Reading Month is just around the corner!   Before March begins, we want to again offer the opportunity for students to author their own books so we can have our very own Moraine authors on display throughout March is Reading Month in our Media Center.   Student Authored Books Our student authored books program is a wonderful way to inspire children to write and illustrate their own books! While we all wish we could protect our students from traumatic events in our communities, the reality is that crises such as community violence, political unrest, and natural disasters are all too common. These situations disrupt the stability of life at home and at school and can deeply impact a child’s sense of safety and well-being. Beginning Monday, January 26, one therapist will be available at Hillside on Mondays from 2:00–8:00 p.m. A second therapist will be added starting Wednesday, February 18, also available 2:00–8:00 p.m. Appointment scheduling for services at the Hillside location is now open. All appointments are scheduled through Trinity’s centralized behavioral health intake center. Families who would like sessions to take place at the Hillside location should indicate this preference when scheduling. Virtual sessions are also available. Trinity offers priority scheduling for NPS students to help reduce wait times and accepts many insurance plans, including Medicaid. Clients will participate in an initial screening to determine the appropriate level of care, and referrals will be made if more intensive services are needed. • Bobcat Broadcast - January 30, 2026

Bobcat Broadcast Amerman Elementary School - January 30, 2026 A Message From Mrs. Caudill Only in Michigan can we start the day in parkas, reach for sunglasses at lunch, and wonder if we should shovel, rake, or simply give up by dinnertime. As one of the few states where you can experience all four seasons before 5:00 PM, we know the weather can change fast and our students need to be ready for it. We go outside every day unless it’s raining or the “feels like” temperature drops below 0°F. That means your child needs to come prepared every day for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us: snow pants, boots, warm coats, hats, gloves, mittens… basically everything but a snowmobile. And speaking of snow pants…We have many pairs of black snow pants at Amerman. On any given day, it feels like half the building is wearing the exact same pair. To help us keep track of all these winter treasures (and keep our lost and found from exploding), please label every piece of your child’s outdoor gear. A last name on the tag is magic. Truly. It saves time, tears, and the occasional “those aren’t my gloves… or ARE they?” mystery. Thank you for helping us keep our students warm, safe, and ready to enjoy outdoor recess in all its snowy, slushy, windy, sunny glory. Thank you for helping keep our kiddos prepared for whatever the day brings! Stay warm out there! Just click to view the entire message! Get Ready... for a Year of Perseverance, Teamwork and Kindness ❤️ Lead with Your Heart ❤️ As we start to look to February, we are reminded of the power and impact of kindness and understanding. In fact February’s Habit of the month is Seek First To Understand and Then to be Understood. Throughout the month of February, Amerman will be celebrating kindness and understanding in many different ways. We are inviting all families to join in celebrating these habits and traits. You are invited to create a heart or valentine and share a few ways that your child has followed the 7 Habits. Write them on the heart and send it to school with your child. Some teachers may also be sending home premade cut out hearts for you to use. We cannot wait to see all the ways our Bobcats Lead with Their Hearts!   Amerman Loop - NEW SIGN ALERT Please note that we have a new Loop sign in the parking at the loop enterance to help with traffic flow and accessibility. The morning Loop closes promptly at 8:42 a.m. If you arrive after the loop closes, you must park and walk your child to the office to sign them in. For the afternoon Loop, please be sure your student’s last name is clearly displayed in your front window. Additionally, there is no cutting through the south parking lot when exiting the Loop — ALL (meaning everyone who utilizes the Loop) vehicles must exit to 8 Mile and turn right. Thank you for helping keep our loop safe and efficient for everyone.   Literacy Session at Parent Camp, 2026   Staffing Update One of our amazing resource room teachers, Lauren Wooster, will be leaving Amerman to step into her dream job supporting and consulting with teachers across the district to better serve students with ASD. While we are going to miss her calm presence, strong advocacy for students, and the way she makes every child feel seen, we are also incredibly proud of her and excited for this next chapter. Mrs. Wooster’s official last day at Amerman is Tuesday, but families will continue to see her around over the next few weeks as she helps with the transition and wraps up evaluations and open IEPs. With that, we're thrilled to introduce Page Temkin, who will be stepping into the resource room role. Mrs. Temkin moved to Northville just over a year ago and has been home with her two small humans, but she’s ready to jump back in and support kids again. She is a Northville parent and the mom of a Winchester Y5 Dragon who will be a Bobcat kindergartener this fall, so she already feels connected to our community. Mrs. Temkin brings over 10 years of experience working with students with disabilities in both schools and private practice. She has worked in the Chicagoland area and also spent four years in Sydney, Australia, which we think is pretty amazing! Mrs. Temkin loves reading, hiking, baking, and exploring new places with her family and friends, and she is truly excited to be here to support our students as they grow. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Wooster on her new adventure and giving Mrs. Temkin a warm Amerman welcome!   Amerman Literacy Night Save the date! I am reaching out to you from "out in the elements" to welcome you to this month’s edition of Connections. As many of you know firsthand—especially those who have recently spent unexpected days at home with your children—the Michigan winter has officially arrived. We understand that weather-related school closures can be a challenge for families. To provide more clarity on how these decisions are made, we will soon be sharing print information detailing our "weather call" process and the behind-the-scenes work our team performs to keep our students safe. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate the unpredictability of the season. Principal Caudill shows the newly constructed ramp, which will replace the stairs that formerly occupied the space. She takes us into the new collaboration space for students, and the repurposed book storage room for teachers. The storage room will house thousands of books for students in kindergarten all the way up to fifth grade and beyond. In front of Amerman, brand-new landscaping surrounds the building and a new entry space has been completed, providing a covered space by the entrance. Meads Mill Updates Meads Mill is approximately halfway through our construction project, and we are pleased to share the progress with you. The new STEAM addition will be opening shortly, providing an 11,000-square-foot space designed to enhance student learning. Featuring bright, high ceilings and a new connection between learning pods, this area is expected to create an engaging environment for both students and staff. Additionally, we are beginning the next phase of our cafeteria and gym remodels. To accommodate these updates, a temporary kitchen will be established, and the cafeteria will be relocated to the gym. During this transition, meal times and recess may be adjusted slightly. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work through these improvements. Our students and staff are resilient and adaptable, and we are confident they will navigate these changes successfully.   New Behavioral Health Partnership with Trinity Health The Northville Board of Education has approved a new partnership with Trinity Health/IHA to provide adolescent behavioral health services directly within the Hillside Community Partnership Space. Starting January 26, licensed therapists will be available on Mondays (2:00–8:00 p.m.), with Wednesday hours added beginning February 18. This initiative offers NPS students priority scheduling to reduce wait times and accepts many insurance plans. Families can book appointments through Trinity’s centralized intake center and should specifically request the Hillside location for in-person sessions. This year, we are taking a truly "Unified District" approach; instead of separate school designs, we have launched a single, district-wide apparel collection to demonstrate that we are one community committed to the same core values. We encourage all families to join us in this movement to ensure every student feels they truly belong. Monday, 2/9: Pink and Red Out (Tolerance). Tuesday, 2/10: PJ Day (Self-Acceptance). It is a nutrient-dense fruit rich in vitamin C and fiber.  Students had the opportunity to try both items in their school lunches from January 19–30.
