MHUSD Messenger Celebrating our Students, Teachers, Staff & Families Each and Every Day September 26, 2025 A Message from Dr. García Morgan Hill Community, The start of the school year is an important time for families to build strong routines that support student success. One of the most important habits is attending school every day. We know that how students begin the school year truly matters. Research shows that attendance in the first month can set the tone for the rest of the year. When students miss just two days a month—referred to as chronic absenteesim—they can fall behind, especially in critical areas like reading. Starting the year off strong, and continuing with regular attendance throughout the year, will lay the foundation for a successful school year.  Missing just 10% of the school year, or about 18 days, can significantly impact a student’s academic progress. Together, we have an important role to play in supporting student success. Simple, consistent routines—like early bedtimes, a healthy breakfast, and a regular homework schedule—can benefit our students. Creating a quiet space to study and helping your child stay organized with a folder or planner helps build lasting habits for success. And don’t forget to check in. Spend a few minutes each day talking about what your child is learning and how they’re feeling. These daily conversations foster connection, motivation, and confidence. Most of all, let’s celebrate the effort. Whether it’s an improved grade, completing a challenging assignment, or showing kindness to a classmate, every win—big or small—deserves recognition. Also this month, we proudly join in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month—honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our country. At MHUSD, we believe every student’s identity should be valued, and we celebrate the richness that our diversity brings to our schools and community. Let’s remember—success is a marathon, not a sprint. Balance, self-care, and perseverance will carry us through. And when families and schools work hand in hand, every student has the opportunity to thrive. Thank you for being part of the Morgan Hill Unified School District family. Dr. Carmen García Superintendent Guaranteed Pathway to San Jose State University On Thursday, September 25 San José State University and Morgan Hill Unified School District (MHUSD) announced “Pathways to Success: Morgan Hill & San José State University Partnership Launch”, a program that will provide guaranteed admission to SJSU and dual enrollment to students in MHUSD. The collaboration expands opportunities for access, equity and excellence for our students and supports the district’s focus on college readiness through guaranteed admission to SJSU and dual enrollment. School-wide, Central is putting in the effot in the district attendance awareness campaign, Mining for Knowledge. Mining for Knowledge: 2025 Attendance Campaign MHUSD launches this year’s Mining for Knowledge Attendance Awareness campaign to remind families that every school day matters. The campaign encourages students to “dig deep” into learning opportunities by being present and engaged. Schools celebrate strong attendance with activities and recognition, while also sharing resources to support families in building positive routines. Consistent attendance not only helps students succeed academically but also strengthens habits that last a lifetime. Together, we ensure every student is mining for knowledge and building a brighter future. MHUSD Messenger Celebrating our Students, Teachers, Staff & Families Each and Every Day August 27, 2025 A Message from Dr. García Dear Morgan Hill Community, I hope you had a joyful and restful summer filled with fun, time with loved ones, and maybe even a great book or two. As we kick off the 2025–26 school year, I’m thrilled to welcome you back. There’s nothing like the energy of a new school year, and we are prepared to make it a great one! Whether you're a returning family or new to our district, we’re delighted you're here. I want you to know that you belong, are welcome, and are supported. Over the summer, we’ve been working behind the scenes to make meaningful improvements for our community. One major update we’re excited to share is the launch of our newly redesigned district website! The site now features a clean, modern look and more intuitive navigation, making it easier for families, staff, and students to find important information and resources. We invite you to explore our site at mhusd.org. The year ahead is full of possibilities: new subjects to explore, friendships to cultivate, passions to discover, and goals to achieve. Many exciting opportunities await our students, ready to spark curiosity and stoke their enthusiasm! Our schools are home to administrators, educators and staff who are energized, committed, and ready to support you every step of the way. Dr. Carmen García Superintendent MHUSD Leaders Kick Off the 2025-26 School Year Morgan Hill’s educational leaders are gearing up for an incredible year—and we couldn’t be prouder of our dedicated management team. Their passion, collaboration, and commitment to students set the tone for a strong start. This year’s annual leadership huddle began with The Beekeeper, a leadership fable that highlights the power of working together with a “we before me” mindset. Just as bees thrive when each member of the hive plays their role, our schools succeed when we unite around a shared purpose. We were fortunate to be joined by Arthur, a local beekeeper, who shared one of his hives and offered a powerful reminder of the synergy found in collective effort. With a continued focus on strength in collaboration, we look forward to making 2025–2026 our best year yet—ensuring every student graduates ready for college, career, and life. New Teachers, Bright Futures MHUSD welcomed new teachers with an orientation full of energy, ideas, and collaboration. Smiles and excitement filled the room as our newest team members prepared to inspire students across the district. This annual event provides teachers with resources, connections, and a strong foundation to begin their journey with MHUSD. With passion and commitment, our educators are ready to support every student who walks through our doors. Together, we look forward to an incredible 2025–2026 school year—one filled with learning, growth, and opportunities for all. Welcome Back, MHUSD! The 2025–2026 school year is officially underway, and MHUSD kicked it off in style with our annual Welcome Back event. This special tradition celebrates the people who make our district shine—educators, staff, and leaders who dedicate themselves to student success every day. A highlight of the event was honoring our three most senior employees from each of our employee groups: Ray, Lead Custodian with 34 years of service; Patrick, Principal for 19 years; and Mr. García, who has inspired students for an incredible 52 years in the classroom. Their commitment reflects the heart of MHUSD. From new faces to long-time legends, every member of our MHUSD family plays a vital role in supporting students and families. Together, we look forward to a year filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable moments. FarmTECH Update FarmTECH is growing—literally and figuratively! Special thanks to 10 South Construction for their generous gift of land leveling. Their team began work on our 18 acres, creating roads and irrigation pathways that mark a massive step forward for the project. This crucial work will allow us to plant a much-needed cover crop this fall. It’s incredible to see the progress: just a week ago our seedlings were barely peeking above the soil. Now, our Sugar Pie Pumpkin plants are thriving in the beds we worked so hard to prepare. So much potential lies ahead! Learn more about FarmTECH and follow our journey at www.mhusd.org. District Benefit Program This year, we’re focused on more than just school meals — we’re making sure every family has access to the benefits they deserve. California’s Universal Meals Program provides free breakfast and lunch to all students, but completing the District Benefit Application is still important. The number of applications submitted directly impacts state funding for our schools. Families may also qualify for extra benefits like reduced AP exam fees, recreation discounts, and lower utility bills. Please complete one application per household by October 1, 2025 using the QR code or link provided. MHUSD and Schools Unveil New Websites We’re excited to share that MHUSD has launched a brand-new website for the district and all 14 of our schools! The updated sites feature a modern, clean design and simple navigation to make it easier for families, students, and staff to find what they need quickly. From enrollment to board meetings, and from school events to classroom resources, our websites are designed to better serve our community by putting the most important information front and center. Each school site has also been refreshed to reflect its unique identity while keeping a consistent, family-friendly look across the district. We invite you to explore the new mhusd.org and your school’s site today — and see how this update helps us stay connected, informed, and engaged as one MHUSD community. Summer Upgrades Strengthen Our Schools Our facilities team had a busy summer making important improvements across MHUSD schools, thanks to Measure G funds and the continued support of our community. These capital projects are part of our long-term plan to modernize learning spaces, improve safety, and upgrade infrastructure to benefit students for years to come. This summer’s accomplishments included fresh paint and an updated administration space at Martin Murphy Middle School, new paint at P.A. Walsh STEAM Academy, and major work at Britton with the renovation of the gym and demolition of Building C. Murphy also received a new fire alarm system, while the Community Adult School saw both a new roof and HVAC upgrades. At Live Oak High School, the parking lot was resurfaced and striped, and districtwide, our data center server and backup infrastructure were enhanced. We are grateful to our dedicated facilities team for completing so much in just one summer! Bond funds are critical to making these upgrades possible and ensuring safe, modern schools for our students. • April 2025 Monthly Newsletter

MHUSD Messenger Celebrating our Students, Teachers, Staff & Families Each and Every Day April 23, 2025 A Message from Your Superintendent Morgan Hill Community, This month, we are celebrating National Bilingual and Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month. This is a very dear cause for us as we are proud of our dual language immersion schools at PA Walsh and San Martín-Gwinn. The benefits of being bilingual/biliterate and bicultural are plentiful. Students have more academic and social engagement and more robust workforce opportunities available to them later in life.  With the guidance of our bilingual educators, our dual language immersion students develop a high level of oral and written proficiency in both Spanish and English, and achieve academic excellence in all subject areas, meeting or exceeding district and California state standards. Studies have shown that dual language immersion learning offers significant benefits, including enhanced brain function and cognitive development, increased equity in access and participation for all students, and stronger family engagement and connections. Through our dual language immersion programs, our students are able to continue this pathway through high school to achieve the State of California Seal of Biliteracy. Thank you to our talented educators who guide our dual immersion students towards dominating two languages! This month, we also honor Administrative Professionals. We thank them for their dedication, care and commitment to our students, staff and families! We encourage you to also join us in thanking our school site and district office Administrative Professionals with a kind word of appreciation. These professionals ensure our schools run smoothly every day.  We value everyone’s efforts to make our schools a welcoming and inclusive space for growth, diversity and excellence, where all students can thrive and reach their potential. Thank you for joining us on this journey! Thank you, Dr. Carmen García Superintendent New Human Resources Director Alex Aasen has been a dedicated member of the Morgan Hill community for 18 years, serving as a social studies teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal at Martin Murphy Middle School and, most recently, San Martin Gwinn. Grand Prize Freedom Fest Essay from Britton Morgan Hill Parade The summer’s fresh air is what wakes me up. That morning was such a special day to me. American culture is so important to me. The 4th of July has always been important to the United States. As soon as I arrived, I could feel my emotion in the air. Every family had smiles on their faces. Something about the 4th of July makes it really special and it feels like a time to really connect with others. I was looking forward to this parade and it did not disappoint me whatsoever. The Fourth of July is more than a historical milestone that made the Declaration of Independence. It was adopted in July 1776. As I stood on the side of the road, I could feel the warmth on my skin. I was in the hot sun when they passed out popsicles, nothing could make this day better. This is one of the little things I enjoyed that made my day even more special. As the parade concluded, I was so glad people were waving American flags, clapping, cheering and were so happy. Some people even got up and danced along to the music. Other people danced along too and joined in. I saw lots of people I knew, friends and family. As everyone was chanting along to the music the horses came along. They were walking down the street like they owned it! Some of these horses were special ones that had tiny American flags on their manes. It was like a big group of people gathered for the same reason. It was a day filled with joy and happiness. Why is it important to me? The Fourth of July is important to me as an American citizen. It is a celebration of history, freedom, and unity. It is a day to remember the people who fought for the independence we fought for and enjoy today. It is such an important historical event that the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. This day was so memorable because I rarely see fireworks. They only happen once a year and that is my favorite time of the year. In conclusion, the Fourth of July is more than just a day of fireworks and celebrations, it is a time to reflect on the values of freedom, independence, and unity that define the United States. The Fourth of July is a powerful reminder of our shared history and importance. It honors the sacrifices of those who fought for liberty. --Nawal A. We're excited for the growth and opportunities ahead as we continue fostering a strong sense of learning and connection at Los Paseos! After School Adventures at San Martin Gwinn! San Martin Gwinn’s After-School Program is officially underway, offering students engaging and enriching activities beyond the school day! Due to an overwhelming response from families, the program is divided into two sessions to ensure every student gets the most out of their experience.  In the first session, K-3rd grade students are enjoying hands-on learning in Garden Club, Art Club, and Spanish Tutoring—each designed to spark creativity, build skills, and encourage teamwork. The second session will bring the same excitement to our 4th-8th grade students with age-appropriate activities that keep them engaged and inspired.  As a Community School, SMG is committed to providing enriching opportunities that support the whole child. Thank you to our families for your enthusiasm and support—we love seeing our students explore new interests and build friendships! Adam Escoto presented a generous $1,000 check, helping fuel innovation and exciting student projects. We are so grateful for this incredible investment in our students’ future. Live Oak students are putting engineering skills to the test by designing and building mouse trap cars. After researching the mechanics behind these vehicles, students used Fusion software to design and 3D print every part needed to construct their cars, which “run” by releasing the trap on a conventional mouse trap. In addition, students have been transforming the Wellness Center with a bright and uplifting mural featuring sunshine and butterflies, creating a welcoming space for all. We are proud of our students’ innovation, creativity, and hard work. Empowering Students & Families: Grant Award & Cafecito Success! We are thrilled to share that Sharon Ross, a dedicated Special Education teacher at Ann Sobrato High School, has been awarded a $1,000 grant from McDonald's Corporation to support the Wilson Reading System in her classroom! This highly effective program enhances literacy skills, particularly for students with diverse learning needs. Thanks to this grant, Ms. Ross can provide specialized tools and strategies to help students build confidence and reading success.  In addition, the Counseling Office hosted a Cafecito on January 8th, where counselors discussed FAFSA and Cal-SOAP with families. • Support for Our Families

Dear MHUSD Parents/Guardians and Families,   We are aware of the increased anxiety surrounding recent executive orders related to immigration and recognize the challenges and uncertainties many of our students, families, and staff members currently face. For many in our community, the weight of these uncertainties is overwhelming.   As I’ve often stated, our collective work and its impact extends beyond the walls of the classroom, school buildings, and offices; our work calls us to serve as a source of stability, compassion, and support for our school community.    By law, all children in the United States, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, have the right to a free and appropriate public education (Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 [1982]), and every student in California has the right to attend public school free from discrimination, harassment, violence, intimidation, and bullying (California Education Code [EC] 220, 234, et seq.).  MHUSD has established important protections for students “irrespective of their immigration status, ethnicity, race, religion, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio- economic status.” We reaffirm our commitment to maintaining our schools as safe and welcoming environments for all students and families. (See Resolution No. 2016-17 039 : Morgan Hill Unified School Sites as Safe Spaces , adopted by the Board in January 2017)   Federal and state laws protect student education records and personal information. The district does not collect immigration or citizenship information.  There are many state and county resources available to our community. For our community’s benefit, we are linking these resources on the front page of the mhusd.org website or under the Family Resources tab. This page will be updated frequently to reflect the latest information. Quick links to some of these resources can be found below.    Furthermore, we are partnering with local community-based organizations to provide additional resources, trainings, and free legal consultations for those that find themselves with immigration related questions/situations. More information on these trainings are forthcoming.   It is important that we continue to support our students, their families, and one another, and remember that central to our mission is that, in partnership with parents and the community, we create learning environments where all students learn and are empowered to achieve their unique potential. Thank you for all you do to make our schools safe places where every single student is valued, feels safe, and can thrive.   In partnership,  Dr. Carmen García Superintendent     Quick Links for Information and Resources  MHUSD Immigration Resources Webpage: Immigrant Student and Family Resources   MHUSD Board Resolution: MHUSD School Sites as Safe Places for All (2016-2017 039) AB 699 Mandates Support for Immigrant Families Guide for Students and Families in English and Español at https://oag.ca.gov/immigrant/resources . Our dedicated teachers and staff work tirelessly to foster engaging learning environments and go above and beyond to support each student's needs ensuring they meet their unique potential. To our teachers and staff: your commitment to each and every student before you is inspiring—thank you!   To our students: Each day you show up, we see you, we see your resilience in overcoming challenges and pushing forward; your presence in school every day is crucial for your success and I thank you for trusting us along your journey.  To our parents/guardians and families, your role is equally invaluable. Your support at home reinforces what's taught and learned in the classroom. Whether that’s helping with homework, reading with your child every night, volunteering at school events, or simply ensuring your child arrives at school on time, every action contributes to our students' success. And, your support in this partnership is key! All of us, together, form a powerful partnership with the goal to improve education in Morgan Hill for everyone. When we all work together – teachers, staff, students, parents/guardians, and community – we create an environment where every student can truly thrive.  As we celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and loved ones, let's all continue to reflect on the importance of this partnership—in our collective commitment to supporting ALL students and fostering a community of lifelong learners. From fun competitions to team-building games, the events fostered school spirit, friendly rivalry, and plenty of laughter across campus.  We are proud of our Britton community for embracing both cultural celebration and spirited fun, making our campus a dynamic place to learn and grow!   Homecoming and Band Highlights from Live Oak High School The energy and school spirit on display during Homecoming this year were truly inspiring.  Festivities kicked off with a spirited homecoming rally in the gym as we cheered on our athletes and enjoyed outstanding performances from our talented cheerleaders. In October, MHUSD Home Study students experienced an exciting adventure at the Spina Farms Pumpkin Patch as a culmination of science studies in plant growth and as the basis for personal narratives and creative art. Students were able to see and touch all the stages of a pumpkin’s life cycle in the form of real seeds, soil, sprouts, flowers, and finally, pumpkins. Students were able to learn from a giant talking pumpkin about photosynthesis and other plant facts. A hay ride and train ride allowed students to see firsthand the characteristics of Autumn in the form of beautiful gardens of sunflowers and marigolds, amazing patches of pumpkin plants in various stages of their life cycles, and, of course, thousands of tall corn stalks.
