Falcon Community Weekly Update - December 5th, 2025
Falcon Community, Welcome to December. Our buildings are filled with excitement as students and staff settle into the winter season and get ready for the holidays. This month always brings a sense of joy and anticipation, and we are looking forward to the many concerts, activities, and celebrations ahead. December has arrived with a festive spirit, and our classrooms are buzzing as students prepare for upcoming events and the holiday break. It is a wonderful time to see their creativity and enthusiasm shine. As we move further into the month, we can feel the winter atmosphere taking hold across the district. The colder days and warm school traditions make this time of year special for everyone. We appreciate the continued support of our families and look forward to sharing a joyful December with all of you. This will also be an open forum for any general questions you may have about our programs, finances, or plans moving forward. All community members are welcome to attend. Anatomy of a Snow Day: The safety of our students, staff, and families is always the starting point for every weather-related decision we make. Our responsibility is to ensure that everyone can travel to and from school safely, which is why snow day decisions begin very early in the morning and involve many conversations with multiple agencies. As we all know, living in Central New York means we are right in the middle of storm season, and with that comes the possibility of school closings and delays. This week has certainly been an active one, and I have received a few questions about how we make the decision to delay or close school. I wanted to take a moment to explain what that process looks like. A typical snow day decision begins around 4:30 in the morning. Superintendents across the region wake up, check the latest forecasts, look at radar, and visit multiple weather sites. We work to understand both the current conditions and what the weather is expected to do during the morning bus run, the school day, and the afternoon ride home. Around 5:00 AM, superintendents from neighboring districts begin texting and calling each other to compare information and discuss what they are seeing in their areas. In collaboration with our transportation directors, we also contact the local town and highway departments to hear what the road conditions look like and what their crews are reporting. After gathering and reviewing all of this information, we determine whether it is safest to call a two-hour delay or close for the day. Sometimes we begin with a delay and later shift to a full closure as conditions change. There are many factors that go into these decisions, and each one is made through careful and timely consideration. Fortunately, we built seven snow days into our calendar, which gives us some flexibility to be cautious when conditions warrant it. We also consider the buses that transport students within Fabius Pompey as well as those traveling to out of district programs. Another factor is that our staff members are driving in from surrounding communities, and road conditions across the region can vary widely. We also understand that delays and cancellations can create challenges for families who must adjust their routines, so we work to make decisions as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support as we move through another Central New York winter together. Warm regards, Lloyd L. Peck, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools
