Of Interest to Staff National Park Passes for Fourth Grade Students - The Bureau of Land Management, as part of their Every Kids Outdoor program, has delivered National Park Passes to the Monterey County Office of Education to help distribute to 4th-grade students throughout the county. The pass provides free access to federal lands and waters through August 2025 and covers the entrance of day-use fees. A bundle of passes will be sent to each school district with 4th-grade students, along with brochures in English and Spanish explaining the program. Find more information and order free passes here . FREE EYH STEM Conference and Career Fair for Girls - The Lyceum of Monterey County is proud to offer its 12th annual EYH STEM Conference & Career Fair for Girls in grades 5-10 this Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Hartnell College! This FREE day-long event includes hands-on activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and a Career Fair to meet female STEM role models and learn about careers in STEM fields. Attendees participate in engaging and fun hands-on activities like Accessorizing with Bioluminescence, HTML coding, unraveling cryptography, discovering plankton, and many more! REMINDER: High School Student Transfer Window Closes December 6 - If you have a student in our MPUSD schools, just a friendly reminder that the transfer window for students wishing to move from one high school to another within MPUSD will close this Friday, December 6, 2024. As an employee, if you have a child in MPUSD and wish to have your child transferred to another school for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, we encourage you to submit your online transfer request by 3:30 p.m. on December 6. For details on transfer requests for the high school transfer process, visit our newsroom story or go directly to the student transfer web page . The window for elementary, TK-8, and middle schools will open in January 2025. Note: Transfers are based on space availability at each high school. Districtwide News Marina Learning Community on the Big Screen - In case you missed it before we went to Thanksgiving Break, take a moment to learn how our Marina schools are addressing the challenges of chronic absenteeism with a focus on empowering students and families. While these videos feature Marina community members and highlights Marina statistics, the attendance message applies districtwide. MPUSD presented an impactful three-part video series highlighting the importance of building strong attendance habits early, the effects of absences on students and communities, and the resources available to support families in creating brighter futures. The series brought together voices from students, parents, educators, and community leaders, showcasing a collective effort to improve attendance and inspire success. Computer Science Education Week , December 9-15, 2024, inspires students from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade to explore computer science, promoting equitable access and celebrating contributions to this dynamic field. This year’s theme, "Looking Back, Leaping Forward," highlights the importance of reflecting on past achievements while preparing for the tech-driven future. Explore Innovation at the 2nd Annual MPUSD Science Fair - Join us on Saturday, December 14, 2024, for an inspiring showcase of student creativity and scientific discovery! Take a moment to read their October/November edition here . Cut to the Campus Congratulations to 12 MPUSD students from Marina High, Monterey High and Seaside High . They were all accepted to Sacramento State University during a BSA Northern California College Tours field trip November 21 - 23. 6th graders from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School of the Arts headed to science camp at Mt. Herman this week. For many of our students science camp may be the very first time they experience an overnight trip away from home. Seaside High continues to shine with excellence, connection, and ambition! Congratulations to freshman Angel Ramirez, who was the top-placing 9th grader at the CCS Cross Country Championships. His impressive performance has earned him a spot at the Division IV State Cross Country Championships. Way to go, Angel! And, prior to Thanksgiving Break, over 500 students recently participated in Breaking Down the Walls, a transformative program aimed at fostering empathy and connection among peers. The program has been a powerful step in creating a more inclusive and understanding campus community. Hot Off the Reel Why MPUSD - Prior to Thanksgiving Break, the Why MPUSD highlighted Seaside High School's Community Schools Coordinator Hugo Solorzano. MPUSD Nutrition Services Cooks Up a Holiday Meal - Students at all schools who participated in the lunch program received a meal cooked from scratch on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The meal included free-range turkey, sweet potatoes, green beans, and cranberry sauce. All products are locally-sourced, including the turkeys from Cream Co. based in the Bay Area. Monterey High School | International Baccalaureate School Showcase - Prior to the Thanksgiving Break, Monterey High School went through a rigorous International Baccalaureate evaluation. Reminders: Info in Previous Editions Worthy of Repeat CPR/AED Classes - Have you ever wanted to take a CPR/AED course? Do you need to renew your CPR/AED card? An upcoming workshop focused on adult, child, and infant CPR/AED is being offered outside of MPUSD. Classes are $70 per person and come with a certification card valid for two years. Positive Culture - MPUSD celebrates a significant milestone with this year’s YouthTruth results, marking the first time since the pandemic that staff perceptions have increased across all areas and levels. These improvements underscore the outstanding work happening districtwide. Additionally, most areas of student experience saw gains, reflecting the positive changes within school communities. These achievements are a testament to the leadership of MPUSD principals and assistant principals, who have set the tone for fostering supportive and empowering environments. Kudos also to MPUSD teachers and staff for the positive tone they set for students in the classroom, creating a culture where students feel valued and supported. This progress highlights the resilience and commitment of leaders, teachers, and staff who continue to make a meaningful impact, even amidst the challenges of recent years. Service Mindset - Central Coast High School’s staff exemplifies the MPUSD Way tenet of service mindset, consistently going above and beyond for students and the community. From Chef Nicole’s unwavering support to Ms. C’s dedication as a new Campus Monitor and Van Driver, the CCHS team shines with commitment. Staff members like Ms. Huerta, who led the school's Wellness Wednesday yoga, and Brenda Acosta, the Bilingual Community Liaison, strengthen community ties and well-being. With Academic Counselor Jason Green, Mr. Perdue, and Ms. Rose supports students in every way, the staff continues to foster a positive, resilient school environment. Improve With Purpose - A big shout-out to Mr. Robert at Los Arboles Middle School for exemplifying the MPUSD Way tenet - improve with purpose . One of MPUSD’s bus drivers shared how Mr. Robert consistently steps in to address student behavior with a balance of firm discipline and genuine care. His approach not only resolves the situation, but also helps students feel respected and supported. Mr. Robert’s ability to guide students while maintaining a positive connection truly embodies the MPUSD Way—thank you for making a difference every day! Every Person Matters and We're Better Together - A huge round of applause for Monterey High School’s Nikki Ahrenstorff for her exceptional work with the International Baccalaureate (IB) program over the years and for her incredible effort in preparing for last week’s evaluation. Coordinating and presenting such a comprehensive review—especially virtually—was no small feat, and Nikki absolutely knocked it out of the park! A big thank-you also goes out to all Monterey High School staff for their flexibility during the visit. Your dedication and hard work over the past year and a half (and the past six years as an IB school) truly paid off and shined during this evaluation. Fantastic job, everyone! Every Person Matters - At MPUSD, we know that every person matters, and this past week showcased the incredible dedication and teamwork of staff from Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr. School of the Arts . Griselda went above and beyond to plan the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day and organize the Community School Information Session. Angela, Drew, and Vanessa’s support for these events demonstrated the power of collaboration. Cathleen and Thomas’ behind-the-scenes contributions to set up and gather supplies for the Ruby Bridges event were essential and deeply appreciated. Derek, Kate, and Lizanne’s flexibility and focus on prioritizing student learning during Math Articulation day embodied intentionality and care. The Kinder Team—Devina, Joyce, and Zach—showed honesty and openness while navigating complex situations with grace. Finally, Derek, Jasmine, Vanessa Sanchez, Elizabeth, and Mia, created engaging learning environments in their classrooms, where students practiced partner talk and applied academic vocabulary. Of Interest to Staff Happy Thanksgiving | Fruit Baskets - We hope this last week of school before Thanksgiving Break is fruitful and productive. Speaking of fruit, some will be coming your way this week. Look for a basket (box) of fresh and delicious fruit delivered to your school site from the Superintendent and Cabinet team. Just a small treat to express gratitude to the MPUSD team. Health Benefits Open Enrollment Closes Today - In case you missed the communications from Human Resources, this is just a friendly reminder that the benefits period closes today - Tuesday, November 19, 2024. No changes will be accepted once open enrollment is over. As always, an in-person appointment is required to submit changes. Cut to the Campus 8th grade AVID students from Los Arboles Middle School had the opportunity to visit UC Davis last week thanks to Mr. Collyer, Ms. Aine, Ms. Ishak, and Ms. KC. College visits are such a wonderful experience for students to see first-hand the college culture. Marina High School celebrates a monumental achievement as the boys' cross country team secures the first-ever Central Coast Section (CCS) Championship in the school’s history. Coaches Omar Sanchez and Jake Bermel led the team to this historic victory. The talented athletes—Kevin Azpeitia, Eduardo Bernal-Samaro, Miguel Angel Flores, Victor Cano, Juan Carlos Perez, and Tarin Riner—showcase the dedication and excellence of Marina High School’s students. Congratulations to the team and coaches for this incredible accomplishment. Last week, Marina Vista Elementary Arts Academy celebrated its amazing students with Hawk Pride awards, recognizing their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments. Over the weekend, the school community came together for Beautification Day, enhancing their campus and showing true Marina Vista pride. Olson Elementary’s Student Council took the initiative to share why they want their peers at school. Take a moment to see their message here . At the Seaside Child Development Center , students are exploring the exciting world of building and construction through a Creative Curriculum investigation study. By creating models of local landmarks like schools, libraries, and fire stations, children are fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and fine motor skills while connecting to their community. Their pride and excitement in showcasing these projects highlight how we’re building more than structures—we’re building relationships and lasting memories together! Learn Something New Every Day - Principal Drew Coleman expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Olson Elementary staff during their recent multi-lingual learner PD day. He commended their deep engagement, effort, and commitment to supporting this student group, emphasizing the importance of consistent structure and effective instructional routines paired with positive, specific praise. Principal Coleman encouraged staff to continue this focus and dedication through Thanksgiving Break, thanking them for truly living out the spirit of learning something new every day. Improve with Purpose - At Monte Vista TK-8 Schoo l, staff recently gathered for a school culture professional development session focused on enhancing campus routines and addressing challenging behaviors with purpose and collaboration. Through a gallery walk brainstorming session, staff shared insights and set clear expectations for key routines across various campus locations. Additionally, they developed a collaborative problem-solving assessment plan to support students at each grade level, helping them build skills related to specific behavioral challenges. As part of ongoing growth, teachers participated in Peer Instructional Rounds, observing each other's classrooms to deepen their focus on formative assessment and active student engagement—key aspects of Monte Vista’s problem of practice. The school also welcomed the districtwide middle school English Language Arts curriculum implementation team for integrity walks in Grades 7-8, exemplifying MPUSD's commitment to continuous improvement and purposeful growth. Service Mindset - Parent engagement is a top priority at MPUSD, and Seaside High School is setting a strong example. Led by Community School Coordinator Hugo Solorzano , Seaside High recently hosted its first mothers' meeting, bringing SHS moms together for an open discussion about the challenges of parenting teenagers. Al Firdaus Ensemble by Palenke Arts - Community partner, Palenke Arts, is proud to bring back to Seaside the Al Firdaus Ensemble, two years after their mesmerizing performance for our community. Al Firdaus will be presenting songs from their album Shifa, which is inspired in the tradition of music therapy used in the medieval Bimaristans (hospitals) established in Al Andalus and across the Islamic world. Patients would be treated in beautiful courtyards with fountains and fragrant plants, using music with the same maqams (musical modes) that we have used on the songs on our album Shifa, to restore balance to the sick following the Greek medical system related to the humors. Their songs will also explore the relationship between different musical traditions such as, Flamenco, Andalusí, Syrian, Celtic and Sudanese, and these traditions are blended in songs such us Talama Ashku Gharami and Salawatun Tayyibatun. Tickets are still available . NOTE: The concert was sold two years ago. This event is sponsored by an anonymous donor, Peace and Justice Resource Center, Whites for Racial Equity and Faisal Nimri. CANVA and ParentSquare Class Survey - The Communications department is taking an informal survey to gauge interest in CANVA or ParentSquare training. Cut to the Campus Superintendent Diffenbaugh kicked off his student engagement visits to hear directly from students about what is working well, what they would like to see more of, and how they would like the district to prioritize its resources. His first stop was Monterey High School last week. He is working with school sites to schedule these engagement tours to hear student input and incorporate their voice into districtwide efforts. Many MPUSD schools are recognizing Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day this Thursday, November 14, 2024, including Del Rey Woods, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School of the Arts, Monte Vista TK-8, and Seaside Middle . Ruby Bridges was only six years old when she made history in 1960 by becoming the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South. Her courageous walk to school, escorted by federal marshals, became a powerful symbol of resilience and progress in the civil rights movement. A huge thank you to everyone who made Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School of the Arts Latin Art Night a success! With over 300 attendees, multiple generations of students' families joined in the celebration. Special appreciation goes to the dedicated staff who showcased student learning, set up, facilitated stations, and supervised during the concert.
