Lee County's Community Big Read
Literate Lee, Lee County's 'Get Georgia Reading' Campaign Team, is hosting a Community BIG READ for the month of September 2024, utilizing funds from the Literacy Matters Grant (earmarked funding from Congressman Sanford Bishop). This is a literacy initiative designed and implemented locally by Literate Lee. We selected September to coincide with the Character Education module which is focused on kindness this month. The chosen book is “Grow Kind” by Jon Lasser and Sage Foster-Lasser. All PreK-5 homeroom teachers were given a "grow kind" kit filled with potting soil, a small flowerpot, and marigold seeds. The goal is for each classroom to plant their seeds and watch their marigolds grow as they discuss their kindness character education throughout the month. A major component of the Big Read initiative is to have every PreK-5 student reading the same book, so each media center and all four public library branches have been gifted copies of the book "Grow Kind" so that teachers may check them out to read to their students during the month and families can check a copy out from the public library as well. Alongside the Grow Kind kits and reading the book, we are hosting a scavenger hunt in downtown Leesburg. On the back of the Community Big Read flyers being sent home with every student is a "hidden kindness quote" with instructions to find the scavenger hunt clues in order to complete the quote. Literate Lee will be providing social media videos which will give hints of where these scavenger hunt clues can be found. There are a total of four locations with portions of the quote provided at each location. Completed scavenger hunt forms can be turned into any of the library branches (Leesburg, Oakland, Smithville, Redbone) until September 27, 2024. They can also be turned in on October 1, 2024 at the Community Celebration, which will be held at the Oakland Bindery from 5:30 - 7:00 PM to culminate the Community Big Read campaign. A light dinner will be provided. A live reading of "Grow Kind" will be done by our Kindness Ambassador, LCHS Student Amelia Reed. (a recording of Amelia reading the book is also available to our schools during the month of September). There will be family friendly activities focused on literacy and kindness, a book giveaway, door prizes (for students only) and we will draw for the top winners of the correctly completed Scavenger Hunt forms. Classrooms of the Day | William Hortman + Sheri Blaise
Round of applause to our final two 2023-2024 Classroom of the Day teachers! Today’s #daiLEEclassroom is Mr. Hortman’s Classroom! Mr. Hortman is an 11th grade U.S. History teacher at Lee County High School. His nominator said, “ He is the best! Period. He’s funny, stays on track, does different activities, and he teaches the most interesting subject. He makes jokes and he listens to our suggestions. Also he is really good at understanding people who sometimes have a hard time getting their thoughts across, like me. ” Mr. Hortman has been teaching for 2 years. “ My "why" for teaching comes from the joy of having a positive impact on students. To know that I will be a role model for some of these kids means a great deal and I am proud to give back to the community. Some of my best memories are from high school and that wouldn't be possible without the educators that helped influence who I am today .” - William Hortman Congratulations, Mr. Hortman, you’re our #daiLEEclassroom #GoodNewsLEE #LearninginLEE Today’s #daiLEEclassroom is Mrs. Blaise’s Classroom! Mrs. Blaise is a 10th grade Geometry teacher at Lee County High School. Her nominator said, “ She is a great teacher, sentiments expressed by her students and her colleagues . ” Mrs. Blaise has been teaching for 13 years. “ There are two main reasons why I teach. I enjoy inspiring my students to see the beauty of mathematics. I want to bring positive change in my students' lives by fostering nurturing relationships with them. ” - Sheri Blaise Congratulations, Mrs. Blaise, you’re our #daiLEEclassroom #GoodNewsLEE #LearninginLEE

Solar Eclipse | April 8, 2024
Good Afternoon Families, As you may already know, a solar eclipse may be visible in Leesburg, Georgia, on Monday, April 8, 2024. While Leesburg is not in the direct path of the total solar eclipse, we may be able to see a partial solar eclipse (75%) in the late afternoon. There will be no changes to the regularly scheduled dismissal of students. As we approach the eclipse, we wanted to share some important information and assurances regarding the safety of all students. We may only be able to observe around 75% of the sun being eclipsed if the weather is sunny. However, the extended forecast calls for cloudy skies with possible rain showers. Due to this forecasted weather, we will plan activities inside for safer viewing opportunities for our students. The weather may change, but we will continue with these plans so that the experience is the same for all students. Your child’s safety is our top priority, so we want to ensure everyone enjoys this celestial event responsibly. Looking directly at the sun during an eclipse can hurt your eyes, so we have some fun and safe indoor activities planned. We’ll be using resources provided by NASA and other live feeds to observe the eclipse safely. Families who want to view the eclipse together may pick up their child before 2:00 p.m. Students who check out early for this reason will not be counted as early dismissals. We will make the most of this teachable moment and do our best to ensure student safety. Thank you and have a great and enjoyable Spring Break!
