NOVEMBER 27, 2022 The staff at Walters Elementary wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving! 8th graders who had passing grades in classes and zero behavior referrals this month were able to attend a glow party. Thank you to the MHS cheerleaders and the Redhawk mascot for visiting some of our schools to spread Redhawk cheer! Mrs. Martinson's class at Gordon Elementary with the Redhawk mascot and the MHS Cheer team. Walters Second Graders are learning all about hydroponic growing! Flex farming is a fully self-contained, indoor hydroponic growing system. Hydroponics is the practice of growing without soil. Instead, you add nutrients directly to the water supply to feed the plants. As water runs down the panels to wet the roots, the plants will pull the nutrients right from the water. The students' role is to plant the seeds, maintain the water level, and harvest the lettuce. This takes approximately 28 days from planting to harvesting. Each harvest produces around 200 heads of lettuce. The students enjoyed sampling the lettuce that was turned into a chef salad. The lettuce that wasn’t used was sent home with each student as well as given to the food service department. A big thank you to Jeremy Yettaw, the Food Service Director at Marshall Public Schools, as he funded the Flex Farm for the second grade, and their teachers Mrs. Ruemenapp and Ms. Benjamin. Cadets at MYCA served Thanksgiving dinner with God’s Kitchen at the First United Methodist Church in Battle Creek. God’s Kitchen also provided an early Thanksgiving feast to the entire corps of cadets. Mr Climie's 5th graders were able to watch a World Cup soccer match while doing research on countries that are playing in the 2022 World Cup. WE WANT TO KNOW.....
