A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary The school year is off to a great success with many accomplishments already, and we are just through the first grading period. Our Homecoming Week was wonderful, which culminated with our annual District Pep Assembly. Our students have accomplished some great things as we have made strong tournament runs in sports and strong performances by our marching band.  Good luck to all our teams in post-season play and those moving on to state competitions. It never gets old to say - it’s a great time to be an Aviator! God Bless You All! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Vandalia-Butler City Schools   Good Luck at State! Our Marching Aviators competed at the Buckeye Invitational at THE Ohio State University in class A and qualified for the OMEA State Championship with a (1) Superior rating. They will compete at Piqua High School in the State Championship on Sunday, November 2. Good luck! More photos from this competition can be found on our district's website.   We had a wonderful Homecoming week! Students and staff attended our annual District pep assembly, where teams of all ages worked together and completed challenges. The B Squad led the District in school cheers, and Mr. O'Leary provided words of encouragement and played a special message from our very own hometown Aviator, Taylor Decker, who currently plays for the Detroit Lions. (Click below for his homecoming message to our Aviators) Our community's support and attendance at our homecoming parade and football game were amazing and extremely appreciated! Taylor Decker's Video Message   Cross Country STATE Qualifiers Congratulations to Cecilia, Jack and Rylan for qualifying for the OHSAA State Cross Country Championship! They will be representing our District at the state level on Saturday, November 1 in Columbus. The team is coached by Julia Morton and Andy White. Congratulations on this huge accomplishment!   Each month, we recognize students, staff and at times, community members who go above and beyond. During the October 6 work session meeting, we awarded Aviator Achievements to Haley, Alice and Debbie. Haley and Alice traveled to Hull, London, to represent Team USA in the World Martial Arts contest. Not only that, but they received high placements in Forms, Sparring, and Weapons. Haley earned 1 Gold Medal, 1 Silver Medal, and 4 Bronze Medals. Alice earned 4 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals, and 1 Bronze Medal. Mrs. Campise has been volunteering for over fourteen years in Mrs. Heis' classroom at Helke. We shared a heartfelt letter from Mrs. Heis and recognized Mrs. Campise for her years of service and dedication.   Delays and Closures Each year, the District shares a letter with important information and procedures for delays and closures. The letter is available online by clicking here. More information is also available on our District website. ParentSquare is and will be our primary source of communication for any unplanned delays or closures; however, we will also share the information on our District website, social media pages, and local news outlets.   Transportation Scanning Devices As we have mentioned in previous newsletters, devices are being installed on each of our buses that will allow students to scan on and off their bus. The devices will be an efficient way for our drivers to take attendance and provide parents with reassurance that their students are indeed on the correct bus. When parents log in to My Ride K-12, they will also see when students enter and exit the bus. We received an update that the scanning devices (previously on backorder) are on their way and will be installed in November. After a period of training for our drivers, we plan to begin using the devices in early December. Please look for more information on this in November. Safety Reminder Our drivers are trained to use clear hand signals to alert students when it is safe to cross. It is crucial for families and students to wait for the "all clear" sign from the driver to ensure traffic from all directions has stopped so students can cross safely. Please help us reinforce these key points at home: Wait for the driver's signal before crossing. Stay at least 10 feet in front of the bus when crossing (5 giant steps). Never walk behind the bus. Make eye contact with the driver to be sure they see you. Arrive early to your bus stop. Please contact us with any questions!   Join Our ParentSquare Groups! VBCSD offers public and community groups with information available when you want it. Choose to join these groups to receive notifications when new updates are posted, or simply click on the group at any time to view the information. Community Events and Flyers Distribution of area events and flyers. Groups Available to Our Community Community Newsletter This newsletter is open to all community members and includes the same information sent monthly to VBCSD families. • August District Newsletter

District Newsletter August | 2025   A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary As we head into the start of the school year, I want to share an important message about a new security feature we will be using this year at Butler High School. I have been very open about my concerns about increased drug usage in teenagers, particularly marijuana. I have shared columns I have written in the Dayton Daily News with you. I have shared with you my concerns in these monthly newsletters (even as far back as 2022). This topic has also been a recent headline in local news, as Children’s Hospital is reporting serious concerns about cannabis poisoning in children, and recently the Governor discussed his concerns about drug use and problems associated with drugs and children/teens. As I am going into the ninth year as Superintendent of this great school district, I have seen a concerning rise in the usage of marijuana among teens. I handled 5 drug related discipline incidents the first year of my superintendency, all paraphernalia related. Last year, my eighth year, I handled 37. The alarming thing is students are bringing marijuana to school and attempting to use or are actually using the drug at school. This didn’t happen eight years ago. We now have students saying they don’t want to use the restroom because it occurs there frequently. We have students voicing frustrations about these issues. We are seeing concerning behaviors in students engaged in drug use.     We are a drug free school, and we will do everything we can to protect students from making harmful decisions and from disrupting the learning environment for others. Before this starts to be a much bigger detriment to our students and disruption to the learning environment, we are going to regularly have the presence of a drug dog in the school that will be under the direct supervision of one of our SSO’s (see column below with information about the dog) in addition to the increased vigilance we have used over the last several years to intervene and catch those doing this. The dog’s purpose is to increase detection and vigilance and hopefully be a deterrent to bringing drugs to school. It will certainly help us detect the presence of drugs and will lead to suspensions with recommendations for expulsions for those who bring drugs to school. The dog is highly trained and is safe to be around students as you will read in the article below. The protocols our SSO will use will be consistent with protocols used by law enforcement officers as they pertain to drug dogs. We will maintain training multiple times per month with our SSO and the dog. Our handler will instruct students and staff on how to conduct themselves around the dog. We have consulted with Chief Porter from Butler Township and Chief Sucher from the City of Vandalia, and they are supportive of what we are doing and will work closely with us.  I share this with you for two reasons. First, to encourage you to talk with your students, to be proactive and vigilant. Second, to be open with you about a problem we are facing and to work together with you to keep our students and campus drug free and protect the learning environment before this problem gets way out of hand.     As we look ahead to the last few weeks of summer break, I hope your summer has been wonderful so far and you make many happy and lasting memories these last few weeks. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school and to another successful school year ahead! God Bless You All! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Vandalia-Butler City Schools   Meet Our Newest Safety Team Member We're excited to introduce the newest addition to our school safety team: K9 SSO Niko. Niko is a German Shepherd who will be working alongside one of our school safety officers to help keep our schools safe and drug-free.   Niko is highly trained, but also friendly, calm and experienced around children and adults. While his primary role will be to help detect the presence of drugs, he's also here to build positive relationships with staff and students, primarily at the high school.   You'll see Niko around the high school as school begins helping our SSO team and visiting with staff and students.   Purple Star Updates Our district has a strong Purple Star program where we support military-connected students. Join us for our annual Military Appreciation Night during the Friday, September 5 football game. We will have a special recognition during pregame at approximately 6:45 p.m. Purple Star families, watch for important information regarding this special event coming soon from ParentSquare! We are expanding our Purple Star program and would like to include students and families who have made or are making the transition to civilian life. Complete this quick form and we will be in contact with you soon!     2025-2026 School Year Information We have begun updating our 2025-2026 school year information on the website. • July District Newsletter

District Newsletter July | 2025   A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day, and you are enjoying rest, relaxation, and fun this summer! As we look ahead to September 2 and the first day of school, I want to preview something new in our transportation department for the school year ahead.   We are implementing several new things in transportation. The most important is an add on from our new routing software that will allow us to take digital attendance of bus riders in K-8 as they enter the bus. This will ensure students are getting on the right bus and are indeed on a bus. This a great safety feature that addresses a few situations we have had in the past. However, the technology needed for this implementation is on back order, so this won’t start at the beginning of the year but will be ready in the fall, we are told. We will be prepared with other measures in place such as our backpack tag system to ensure a smooth start. Bus routes will be available at least two weeks before the start of the school year, but we also recommend checking during the days leading up to the first day because enrollment changes may impact bus numbers and pick up/drop off times. God Bless You All! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Vandalia-Butler City Schools   State Budget: Update from Superintendent O'Leary Now that the state budget is in place, we have seen a few different simulations for our district. Based on these simulations, we expect to see a cut in our state funding over the two years of this biennium budget in the ballpark of half a million dollars. We will continue to update as we learn more. We highly encourage you to reach out to our local legislators representing our school district to advocate for fair and appropriate funding and to address the funding shortfalls from the state as it relates to our school district.   Attention Veteran Families! • May District Newsletter

District Newsletter May | 2025   A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary What a school year this has been! With so many new things to start the year, we implemented the changes, kept some old traditions, and started new ones like our end of year “Meet me at the 50” with our graduating seniors and kindergartners meeting at the 50 yard line of Memorial Stadium.    The changes implemented and communicated about throughout this school year will lead to lasting improvements in the way our grade levels are organized, the academic calendar, etc. And while we still have challenges ahead of us, I want to celebrate the successes that we have had this school year!   The best reflection of these successes occurred this last week of school. On Sunday, we celebrated a very successful graduating class! As I mentioned in my remarks, they have experienced many ups and downs but also experienced tragedy and loss in an indescribable way. But the way this graduating class has handled these challenges has been remarkable. When I think of this class, I will always think of their strength together and especially their resiliency. This class grew in strength, collectively and individually, and in that strength managed to achieve great things academically, musically, artistically, athletically, and beyond. The proof is in how they have earned over $20.5 million in scholarship money for postsecondary education and training! This almost doubles the record of previous graduating classes before them! More proof is that we have a national scholar, a national champion, state champions, state final four participants, state qualifiers, band performers in Orlando at a national event, and the list goes on and on. On Tuesday night we celebrated many of these successes with aviator achievement awards for students and staff at our school board meeting. The successes our students, coaches and staff have reached this year are remarkable!    Congratulations to our softball team for earning District runners up and best of luck to our baseball team, and boys’ and girls’ track teams as they continue to compete and represent Butler in postseason play. IT IS A GREAT TIME TO BE AN AVIATOR!!!!!   And IT IS A GREAT TIME FOR SUMMER BREAK!!! I wish all our students, families and staff a relaxing, fun, memory-making summer for all! Have a great summer! God Bless You All! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Vandalia-Butler City Schools   State Budget Update from Superintendent O'Leary In the April newsletter, I updated our district on the proposed state budget and the impact on our district. There is nothing new to report as the Senate is beginning hearings next week. Again, we highly encourage everyone to reach out to our local legislators representing our school district and advocate for fair and appropriate funding to address the funding shortfalls from the state as it relates to our school district! We will keep you posted as we hear more throughout the summer. Again, the state budget has to be in place by July 1.   In Our District Congratulations, Class of 2025! We celebrated the commencement of the Class of 2025 Sunday, May 18. Loved ones, friends, faculty and community members filled our student activity center for this special occasion. The Class of 2025 leaves a lasting legacy, and we are thrilled to announce they earned a record-breaking $20,531,118 in scholarship opportunities. The future is bright for this class of 263 graduates! An album will be uploaded to our website by Friday, May 30. Check www.vbcsd.com/photos for more!   Meet Me at the 50 Our seniors and kindergartners teamed up for a sweet moment at the 50 yard line of Butler Memorial Stadium! A huge thanks to the kindergarten team for initiating and coordinating what will continue on as a tradition in our district! • April District Newsletter

District Newsletter April | 2025   A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary With a few weeks back from spring break, the end of the school year is quickly approaching. As the focus of my monthly columns have been on the changes implemented this school year, I want to begin talking about the next challenge ahead of us.     Every two years, the State of Ohio implements a new two-year Biennium Budget. It starts with the Governor’s proposal, then moves through the House, then through the Senate, then back to the Governor for final approval. All of this has to be in place by July 1 of the first year of the biennium budget.     The Governor revealed his proposal a few months ago. The initial projection did not look good for our District. It showed a 10% cut which would equate to losing over $1.2 million in state funding for our District.     We have lobbied with our state legislators Representative Phil Plummer, Representative Rodney Creech, and Senator Steve Huffman. These discussions have been very productive, and we are thankful for the changes recommended in the House version of the budget bill, led by Representative Plummer. The House version is currently showing a 2% increase which would equate to an additional $137,262 for our District over the two years of the biennium. Now, it is in the Senate’s hands, and we wait for projections on what the Senate is going to propose. We hope the Senate will increase our state share but certainly come back with no less than the latest House version. We cannot take a 10% hit in state funding. Remember, last year we shared that we are one of the lowest 50 state funded districts in Ohio. Our creative cost savings solutions were a big relief over the last two years and have worked out well for us, but a 10% reduction would be a big blow to our district.     As such, we continue to look for cost savings in order to keep our staffing levels and programs intact. At our April Board meeting, which was our annual Youth in Government meeting, our student counterparts were able to see a presentation of the proposed budget and consequential proposed legislation related to finance. The students also witnessed the discussion on our finances and a hard decision to pause on the purchase of Math textbooks for Kindergarten-Algebra II until we know more about the Senate budget proposal.     I encourage everyone to reach out to our local legislators, (their contact information can be found here), to advocate in support of an increase to Vandalia-Butler City Schools state funding share. This is something we are keeping a very close eye on, and we will continue to provide updates as the budget process plays out at the State House.    As we look ahead to the end of the year, we are down to almost 3 weeks for seniors and 5 weeks for everyone else. As the saying goes, the temptation to quit is the greatest just before you’re about to succeed. With warmer weather and the promise of summer ahead, don’t let up, the end of the year is quickly approaching, let’s finish up strong! Happy Easter. Have a wonderful weekend! God Bless You All! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Vandalia-Butler City Schools   In Our District Youth in Government Day Butler High School juniors were immersed in a hands-on learning experience as they joined leaders from Vandalia-Butler City Schools, the City of Vandalia, and Butler Township. Students were paired with counterparts at each jurisdiction to learn how local government operates, how local decisions are made and what it means to be in a public service position. Thank you to the Vandalia-Butler Optimist Club for hosting the event and to our local credit unions for providing a luncheon for all participants.   Purple Up! for Military Kids April is the Month of the Military Child and we chose the week of April 14-17 to celebrate our military-connected students with a district-wide spirit week!   Purple Star Schools We are proud and honored to announce that all five schools in our district have been renewed and will continue to be recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce as Purple Star Schools! Schools receive the honor of the Purple Star designation for their efforts in supporting military-connected students and their families.   Drive Safe Mock Crash Program Butler High School students learned about the risks and impacts of impaired and/or distracted driving during a mock car crash program. Thank you to the many volunteers who coordinated this program including the City of Vandalia, Butler Township, Morton & Whetstone, CareFlight, and, of course, our students and staff.   District Updates Class of 2025 Join us as we celebrate the Class of 2025! Commencement Details Date: Sunday, May 18, 2025 Time: 1:30 p.m. Location: Butler High School's Student Activity Center   B.A.S.E. Updates B.A.S.E. (Before and After School Experience) is a program offered at Vandalia-Butler City Schools providing before and after school childcare for families. To gauge the interest for the 2025-2026 school year, we are asking families to complete this survey. The feedback received will help the district determine if the program can continue to be supported. Over the summer, based on survey feedback, we will determine if we have enough students to offer before and/or after school care, which building(s) will provide the program and the staffing levels required.  For more information about our B.A.S.E. program, visit our website here. Please CLICK HERE for 2025-2026 BASE interest/registration survey. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Sheri Zugelder, B.A.S.E. • March District Newsletter

District Newsletter March | 2025   A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary It’s a great time to be an Aviator! Each month this school year we have highlighted different school buildings as we’ve discussed the effects of the reconfiguration. Last month, I highlighted Morton. This month, I want to highlight Butler High School. What a year it has been so far for our students!    At the Board of Education meeting this week, two BHS students Luke Caldwell and Kyla Bedel presented the many great things happening at BHS. They also shared their impressive plans post Butler High School. Also at the meeting, Senior Cooper Pion received an Aviator Achievement Award for being named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, a prestigious recognition. He also shared his impressive plans post high school. Three other BHS students we also recognized. Freshman Lauren McBride, freshman Fable Walton and junior Reagan Downey were awarded Aviator Achievement Awards for being named Queens of the Miss Showcase of Stars Pageant held in January. They exuded poise and confidence, obvious byproducts of the hard work and competition they have dedicated themselves to.   This has been an exceptional year so far for Butler High School. In the fall, our girls’ soccer team went to the state final four, the furthest our girls’ team has ever made it. Our student athletes and coaches have received league and district honors, and many athletes qualified to compete at the state level. Most recently, the following athletes competed at the OHSAA state level for winter athletics:  Bowling State Champs: Our second ever state championship team! We celebrated the girls’ bowling team last week at a schoolwide pep assembly. Our girls bowling team consists of Elizabeth Koewler, Sage Malott, Jolene Powers, Ashlin Conley, Mary Williams, Melayah Burton, Hailei McQuaid, Kierstyn Priser, head coach Mark Seelbaugh and assistant coach Steve Sacks.  Swimming and Diving: Dayne Schlagetter, Brendan Swinderman, Brodie Schlagetter, Alex Hale, and Korey Snyder. Additionally, Lydia Knisley and Dayne Schlagetter were recognized as MVL Swimmers of the Year. Wrestling: Jace Love and Braylen Crump Coaches of the Year: Boys’ swim coach Greg Bergman (MVL), girls’ bowling coach Mark Seelbaugh (MVL), and girls’ basketball coach Molly Bardonaro (MVL, Southwest District and District 9).   Not only are students excelling on the field of play, but also in the performance areas. Our drama department just completed their spring musical, Mamma Mia!, and our Marching Band, color guard and Kickline recently performed at a Universal Studios parade in Orlando, Florida and attended workshops and masterclasses while there. Speaking of marching band, our grades 6-12 band participant numbers have doubled over the last 5 or so years, which led us to hire an additional band instructor to help better serve these growing numbers. Mr. Rahilly was just approved at the Board meeting this week.   Our students at the Board of Education meeting this week showcased the great educational opportunities provided to our students. Most people don’t realize the many academic clubs and extracurricular activities we provide at BHS. Many also don’t realize we still take educational field trips at the high school level to supplement and enhance our curriculum. The Spanish class is going to Sidney High School for performances by the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet, students attended the MedQuest field trip for their medical career exposure program, and students explored Engineering opportunities while on a trip to Sinclair, to name a few. While cost savings measures have been taken in previous school years, we protected classroom activities and experiences for our students which have allowed for opportunities like these to continue.   Great things are going on throughout the district, especially at Butler High School. Congratulations to Mr. Williamson and the specialized and dedicated teachers, staff, and coaches at BHS for facilitating great opportunities for our students this year! It’s a great time to be an Aviator! God Bless You All! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Vandalia-Butler City Schools   In Our District State Champions Congratulations to our Lady Aviators Bowling Team for winning the 2025 OHSAA D1 State Bowling Championship! Their achievement was celebrated with a fire and police escort into town along with a BHS pep assembly which included congratulatory remarks from school, city and township officials. This marks our District's second team state championship in school history, with our first title earned by the 2019 boys bowling team. Congratulations, Aviators!   Art Students Earn State Honors As we celebrate Youth in Art month, we congratulate Morton Middle School students Maliyah and Mary for advancing to the state level in the Ohio Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month Flag & Graphic Design Exhibition!  Maliyah’s drawing earned Honorable Mention in the 6th-8th grade graphic design division for the entire state of Ohio. Our Marching Aviators, Color Guard and Kickline travelled to Orlando, Florida for a special Universal Studios parade performance. While there, students participated in music and dance workshops, and explored the parks.   Elevate the Arts Mark your calendars for our 13th annual Elevate the Arts show! • February District Newsletter

District Newsletter February | 2025           A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary Throughout the year I have highlighted the positive outcomes and challenges in all of the buildings most affected in the reconfiguration. At the February Board of Education meeting, we had a quarterly Middle School Happenings presentation from Morton Middle School students. While Morton was not as affected by the reconfiguration, I was reminded by these students’ presentations of the many important programs and experiences for our middle school students. These programs were able to be kept in place because of the cost cutting solutions we put in place through the reconfiguration. The students this month presented on a range of different programs such as the Aviator Advantage Club, the Odyssey Club, Bring out the Best mentor program, and the Intensive Needs Unit program. Some of these programs are new, while others are a few years in the making, but all represent the very important offerings Mrs. White and the student-centered staff at Morton offer our middle school students. I think it would be widely agreed that the middle school aged adolescent is a challenging age group because of what adolescence is and the challenges it brings. I think it would also be widely agreed that it takes a very special person to teach this age group. We are fortunate to have educators who see the positives of teaching the middle school aged student and the importance of this transition from child to young adult as these students prepare for the transition to high school. Mrs. White and her staff offer many great programs, such as these presented at the February Board of Education meeting and strive to meet the needs of all students.    Morton was not a major site of change in the reconfiguration, but there were a few changes that affected Morton. First, we had to move the start time up. While we would prefer a later start time for Morton students, it is a necessity because of transportation logistics and bus routes. Another change is that we are planning to use the grass field at Morton as a practice football field for our junior high team. We stopped using the football field at Smith for football games several years ago because of the poor condition of the bleachers and press box. Our new end times and routing configurations kept us from using that site for football practices last school year. However, we have been working hard to build the turf in the grassy field area at Morton so it can withstand the wear and tear of football practices. The plan is to use the field as a practice field this fall, which will save our athletes and our transportation department from shuttling to a different location for practices. Having football practices at Morton was the original intention in the design of the middle school prior to construction. This has been a very successful month for our middle school students, as highlighted at the February Board meeting. Our 7th and 8th grade boys, and our 8th grade girls all competed in the MVL basketball championship, with the 8th grade girls and 8th grade boys winning the league! At the release of this month’s newsletter, we will be more than halfway through the shortest, longest month of the year. Spring is on the way! God bless you all! We are Aviators! • January District Newsletter

District Newsletter January | 2025           A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary The last several months I have highlighted the many benefits we have seen this year in the reconfiguration. This month, I want to share some of the challenges we have and how we are approaching those.   One of the first challenges we have experienced is with traffic. Of course, these were problems prior to the reconfiguration as Demmitt was built in the 50s and Helke and Smith in the late 60s during times when most students either walked to school or rode the school bus. Traffic was not nearly as busy as it is today. That does provide significant challenges. We have adjusted some traffic patterns and staggered dismissal times for car riders and bus riders. At Smith, for example, we have adjusted where buses are dismissed from to alleviate congestion on Little York. However, we are continuing to seek better solutions as we deliberate a potential parking expansion in the green space in front of Smith. We also are continuing to evaluate and run different scenarios for transportation routing options for next year as well.      The next issue is with staffing in some of the reconfigured buildings. Obviously, we were in cost savings mode last year while planning for the reconfiguration and certain staff positions were not filled or replaced this year to save money. This year’s staffing was based upon student numbers and needs of what we knew them to be as of last spring, and as we entered the new school year, new needs arose which have created some challenges with less staff to address them. While we have added some aides for support this year to help address those challenges, we still have some areas to address. We are currently in the staff planning stages for next school year and are working to address some of the areas, particularly at Smith and Helke. Additionally, we have also decided we are going to bring back tutoring in targeted areas during the school day (beginning next school year) and summer school (beginning this summer) as we did during the pandemic to provide additional supports. These were very valuable programs that showed positive results for students. We unfortunately had to cut them as cost savings measures. We are excited to bring them back.    The last challenge is one we talked about while we were planning the reconfiguration. That is in the number of transitions students will have from Helke to Demmitt, Demmitt to Smith, Smith to Morton, and Morton to the High School. Building principals are working on this together and will be implementing strategies to allow for smooth and positive transitions, particularly at Helke, Demmitt, and Smith. Last but not least, I want to give a special thanks and shout out to our Board of Education. As January is School Board Recognition month, we are lucky to have 5 outstanding Board members. They all come from different backgrounds and perspectives and approach problems in different ways, but all are very thoughtful in their approach. Most importantly, they all love this school district and support our students and staff. They work with me and Mr. Beavers to do our best to make decisions in the best interest of our students and our community. Please join me in thanking these very dedicated public servants! God bless you all! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent           In Our District District Food and Toy Drive Our students, families, staff and community showed a tremendous outpouring of support during our National Honor Society's tenth annual district-wide food and toy drive. • December District Newsletter

District Newsletter December | 2024           A Message from Superintendent Rob O'Leary This month I would like to share what we are seeing educationally in the reconfiguration at Smith. Not surprising, having the whole third grade level together in one building has been very beneficial, just as has been reported at Helke and Demmitt.    The common planning for curriculum and the development of student schedules is more efficient and consistent for the third grade level for the first time ever. Additionally, curriculum work, such as the math textbook adoption process has been more efficient with all teachers in one location. The same can be said for vendor resources, as it is now the same for all students and teachers. There are no differences between the two buildings like in the past. We have also been able to better identify at-risk students as a grade level rather than when the grade was split between two buildings. All diagnostic, identification, and intervention/acceleration plans can now be done on the same schedule.    With Helke being our early learning center and Demmitt being our learning to read center, Smith is where the reading to learn shift occurs. A helpful component to this is the Aullwood READS program. We have partnered with Aullwood to target the third grade as a whole. This has been an excellent program! In addition to the third grade team, our teachers in grades four and five are also working together to pilot new reading interventions.    By having third through fifth grade students together, we are also able to add more opportunities in music and art, with two teachers each in the building. This has led to expanding our handbell club, adding a ukulele club, and having concerts for both this year. We eventually hope to be able to do more with instrumental music at this level. We also have been able to expand the drama club at Smith with the addition of third grade.      With our feet planted in this transition, Smith’s challenge and focus is on implementing a true intermediate school atmosphere. Our staff is beginning to develop plans to research and implement best practices of teaching and culture at the intermediate level.      As we have only a few short weeks in December before we break for the holidays, on behalf of the Board of Education, our administration and staff, I would like to wish you and your family a blessed holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! God bless you all! We are Aviators! Rob O'Leary Superintendent Aullwood READS Vandalia-Butler City Schools has partnered with Aullwood Audubon Center for their Aullwood READS program, Resources of Earth and Agriculture Discovered and Shared. The ten-week after school program is geared toward third graders and integrates reading and writing skills with hands-on experiences immersed in nature and farming. Throughout the program, students visit weekly for ninety minute sessions and Aullwood’s naturalists and mentors provide one-on-one support for students. The goal of the program is to improve reading skills and encourage positive attitudes toward reading, nature and agriculture. Students have excelled immensely through this ten week program, and they look forward to attending each week. The District looks to continue with a new session in January.                                         In Our District District Food and Toy Drive The Butler High School National Honor Society is hosting the tenth annual district-wide food and toy drive. Each building in our district will be collecting new unwrapped toys and non-perishable food and household items through December 19. All donations directly benefit our local Vandalia-Butler Food Pantry. Students from Butler High School's National Honor Society presented a check to Mr. John Wheeler and the Vandalia-Butler Food Pantry to help stock their shelves this winter. This donation is from fall activities and will be in addition to items collected from our annual district-wide toy and food drive.            Smith Raises Funds for A Special Wish Over four hundred tickets were sold for our annual Chicken and Waffles event! This wonderful giving opportunity not only provided for memorable moments for families to gather, visit with Santa, and enjoy a meal, but it also provided the opportunity to sponsor a local child's special wish to be granted. Over the years, Smith has donated over $70,000 to Dayton's chapter of A Special Wish. Thank you to all who attended! A special thank you to all who made the event possible including event sponsors Morton & Whetstone and Frickers.                                    Quality Profile The Quality Profile provides a comprehensive year-in-review look at our district. It includes accountability measures beyond the state's report card that demonstrate the value and commitment our community places on education. It highlights the strides we are making to provide a well-rounded education while remaining focused on the whole-child.
