NSboro News - 2022-2023 The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough "Educate, Inspire, Challenge" Friday, May 26, 2023 Titan Games 2023: Student Support Services describes the day of the Titan Games as the best day of the year. Yesterday, the weather was beautiful for our 80-plus students spanning grades Kindergarten through post-grad athletes. We welcomed our Assabet Valley Collaborative students to join in and participate with our students in our track and field events, supported by many caring and supportive staff from all ten schools and student volunteers from ARHS, Melican, and Trottier. Events included the 50-meter dash, the long jump, and the tennis ball throw. This event highlights team camaraderie and sportsmanship. Although social media can have certain advantages, substantial evidence indicates that it can also jeopardize the mental well-being of young individuals. Notably, social media is widely prevalent among young people, with as many as 95% of individuals aged 13-17 reporting its usage and a significant portion indicating almost constant engagement. I recommend parents and guardians read the full report , linked here . Additionally, if time is limited, I have provided a summary of the report below. Summary of Report What Parents and Caregivers Can Do Create a family media plan. Agreed-upon expectations can help establish healthy technology boundaries at home – including social media use. A family media plan can promote open family discussion and rules about media use and include topics such as balancing screen/online time, content boundaries, and not disclosing personal information. Create tech-free zones and encourage children to foster in-person friendships. Since electronics can be a potential distraction after bedtime and interfere with sleep, consider restricting the use of phones, tablets, and computers for at least 1 hour before bedtime and through the night. Model responsible social media behavior. As children often learn behaviors and habits from what they see around them, try to model the behavior you want to see. Teach kids about technology and empower them to be responsible online participants at the appropriate age. Have conversations with children about who they are connecting with, their privacy settings, online experiences, and how they spend their time online. Empower and encourage them to seek help should they need it. Report cyberbullying and online abuse and exploitation. Talk to your child about their reporting options, and provide support without judgment if they tell or show you that they (a) are being harassed through email, text message, online games, or social media or (b) have been contacted by an adult seeking private images or asking them to perform intimate or sexual acts. Work with other parents to help establish shared norms and practices and to support programs and policies around healthy social media use. Such norms and practices among parents facilitate collective action and can make it easier to set and implement boundaries on social media use for children. Summary of Report - Continued Recent studies have highlighted social media's positive and negative impacts on childrens' and adolescents' mental health. Excessive social media use, exceeding three hours per day, has been associated with a higher risk of poor mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety. The introduction of a social media platform among college-aged youth has been linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety. Conversely, limiting social media use has improved depression severity and subjective well-being. Correlational research has also identified associations between social media use and mental health concerns, particularly for adolescent girls and those with preexisting mental health issues. Issues such as cyberbullying-related depression, body image dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and poor sleep quality have been linked to social media use. Parents express concerns about the potential negative effects on their children's mental health, including anxiety, depression, lower self-esteem, exposure to explicit content, and pressure to conform. Excessive and problematic social media use can disrupt healthy behaviors and is associated with sleep problems, attention problems, and feelings of exclusion among adolescents. Excessive social media use has been consistently related to poor sleep quality, reduced duration, difficulties, and depression among youth. Poor sleep is linked to altered neurological development, depressive symptoms, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Excessive social media use has also been associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and the fear of missing out, which is related to depression, anxiety, and neuroticism. In summary, while social media can positively affect youth, there is a growing body of evidence indicating potential risks to their mental health and well-being. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of social media. In the meantime, it is crucial to take action to create safe and healthy digital environments that minimize harm and safeguard children and adolescents during their critical stages of development. NSboro News - 2022-2023 The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough "Educate, Inspire, Challenge" Friday, May 19, 2023 Fifth-grade students visit Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) to learn from ARHS AP Government students. At a recent Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee meeting, the Committee accepted a $50,000 donation from BSN Sports. BSN Sports, the nation’s largest direct marketer and distributor of sporting goods to the school and league markets, named Algonquin Regional High School as the recipient of its Ultimate Victory Uniform Makeover. From February 1, 2023, through March 10, 2023, over 4,800 coaches from high schools across the country shared why their school deserved a Victory Uniform Makeover. Algonquin shared within their entry that the community is in its first year of changing the school’s mascot from the Tomahawks to the Titans. A significant aspect of completing the mascot change is the additional cost of replacing the school’s athletic uniforms with the updated Titans branding and logo. Given the budget needs, the full Algonquin mascot transition could have taken anywhere from five to seven years based on the program’s planned funding. However, through the Ultimate Victory Uniform Makeover, nearly all Algonquin teams will have a unified athletic brand in less than a year. “Getting to participate in high school athletics is a special opportunity for our youth, and we want to continue to elevate the student-athlete experience as best we can,” said Terry Babilla, President of BSN SPORTS. “New uniforms are integral to the mascot transition process. They unify athletic programs by helping get student-athletes excited about their new mascot and building pride in representing their school community. We look forward to supporting Algonquin’s student-athletes by providing them with fully customized, cohesive, high-quality uniforms so they can officially compete as the Titans for the first time.” The dedicated local BSN SPORTS sales team will work with Algonquin to custom design new uniforms within the approved Boys' and Girls’ J.V. and Varsity sports to support the program’s rebranding. “Receiving new uniforms is a major step for our school in completing the rebranding process,” said Mike Mocerino, Algonquin Regional High School Athletic Director. “BSN SPORTS is helping us accelerate the overall transition to the Titans and reduce added costs along the way. This unique opportunity will unite our student-athletes and boost their confidence, along with our school’s reputation. We can’t wait for our teams to represent Algonquin in their one-of-a-kind BSN SPORTS Victory Line Uniforms this fall and spring.” Congratulations ARHS. Respectfully, Gregory L. This season, the Team's relentless dedication and hard work have resulted in an invitation to the 2023 FIRST® Championship in Houston, Texas. The competition was hosted by FIRST®, an international event for youth robotics competitions and an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for our community as we prepare young people for the future. The qualification and advancement to participate in FIRST® Championship varies by program. Team 1110 has demonstrated exceptional skills and expertise, enabling them to secure a place in this prestigious event. Each year, FIRST® introduces a new theme and challenge, which inspires teams to design and build robots to compete in the competitions. Teams play 10-12 qualifying matches, during which they are assigned partners on an alliance (red or blue) of 3 teams. At the end of the qualifying matches, the eight highest-ranked teams captain an alliance and get to choose their partners for the playoffs. View from the stands at this year’s Finale at Worlds. The qualifying matches leading up to this competition were played across 8 fields that ran end-to-end in this Texas-sized convention center -nearly one-third (⅓) of a mile long! Photo Credit Jack Tommaney The matches are 2.5 minutes long, starting with a 15-second autonomous period, during which only the programming moves the robot. After this, the drive team jumps in and remotely controls the robot. The teams play in divisions, and after the playoffs, they move on to the overall finals. Unfortunately, our communities had to deal with two very serious incidents that have caused significant disruption and concern. First, on Tuesday, March 28, Algonquin Regional High School was subject to a swatting incident that led to a significant emergency response. While thankfully, there was no actual threat to the safety of our students or staff, this situation was distressing and understandably caused concern amongst many of our families. I want to thank the Northborough Police Department for its immediate response and expertise, the students for remaining calm and responding accordingly, the faculty and staff for providing leadership, and Principal Bevan for his leadership in a crisis. The Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough will continue to work closely with local law enforcement to investigate this incident and ensure the District takes all necessary steps to provide students, faculty, and staff with safe and secure schools. Second, the horrific school shooting in Tennessee has deeply affected many faculty, staff, parents, and students. The tragedy in Tennessee has reminded us all of the importance of staying vigilant and prepared for any situation that may arise. The District continues to review its emergency procedures in light of this incident and is taking additional measures to ensure that students and staff are as safe as possible. As always, we appreciate your support and partnership in helping us to keep our school community safe.
