CSD40 Update - Celebrating Gratitude and Growth Acro...
CSD40 Update | November 22, 2024 Important Dates November 25-29 - No School; Thanksgiving Break December 3 - CHS Winter Sports Night December 4 - Creslane Picture Retakes December 6 - CHS Blood Drive December 10 - Creslane Winter Concert Superintendent's Message Dear CSD Families and Staff, As we step into the season of gratitude and celebration, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the many exciting opportunities and accomplishments happening across our schools. This week, I want to highlight a few remarkable moments that showcase the dedication, creativity, and hard work of our students and staff. At Creswell High School , our seniors are fully immersed in College Application Week , gaining valuable skills for their futures. They’re learning to write professional letters, apply for scholarships, and navigate opportunities like the Oregon Promise grant, all while preparing applications to colleges of their choice. This is a significant step toward their bright futures, and we are so proud of their efforts. Our youngest learners at Creslane Elementary are also achieving milestones in their Learn to Ride Unit . Watching our Kindergarten and 1st-grade students develop confidence and coordination while learning to ride bikes is a joy. These foundational skills open up a lifetime of active, healthy habits. Over at Creswell Middle School , our Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group has been busy with unique learning experiences. They recently welcomed the owner of Eugene’s Nothing Bundt Cakes as a guest speaker, gaining insights into entrepreneurship and business leadership. Additionally, they participated in Sports Business Day in Portland, capped off with an exciting Trail Blazers game. These hands-on opportunities inspire our students to dream big and work hard toward their goals. As we recognize Substitute Appreciation Day today, November 22 , I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible substitutes. Their flexibility, commitment, and support ensure that learning continues seamlessly for our students. They are an essential part of our Creswell School District team, and we deeply appreciate all that they do to keep our programs and students moving forward. During this season of thankfulness, we are reminded to pause and cherish the moments that bring us together. Our teachers are currently engaged in conferences with families, fostering meaningful connections that strengthen the home-to-school partnership. Your dedication to supporting each child’s success is the foundation of everything we do, and we are deeply grateful for your efforts. Wishing you a season filled with thankfulness, joy, and meaningful moments with loved ones. Together, let’s continue to thrive, succeed, and lead in all that we do. Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District College Application Week November 18-22 is College Application Week at Creswell High School. Our Seniors engaged in applying for OSAC Scholarships, the Oregon Promise Grant, and learning how to write professional emails early in the week. Then they learned how to write a college essay and received assistant in applying to colleges. A big thank you to Angela Dennis, Lori Naugle, Mona Stiffler, Ginger Jones, and Liz Babbs in their support for students exploring post-high school options this week! Creswell Middle School FBLA Guest Speaker & Fundraiser Our CMS FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) students got to hear from Bob Cerince from Eugene’s Nothing Bundt Cake about being a business owner. Members will be selling Bundt Cake products through December 4 where 30% of the total sales will benefit the Chapter competing at State. This is the third year that Bob has spoken to CMS FBLA members. Thank you, CSD Substitutes! We can't imagine a world where our AMAZING substitutes don't exist, but our Creslane 5th graders are giving us a glimpse into what could be if our dedicated professionals weren't there to help us out. Join us in extending our gratitude to our substitutes on Substitute Appreciation Day. THANK YOU! 👏👏 New Bicycle Learn to Ride Unit for Creslane Kindergartners and First Graders! Beginning on November 4th our kindergarten and first-grade students began taking part in a Bicycle Learn to Ride unit with support from Lane County Safe Routes to School and our dedicated PE teacher, Lynda Blutreich. This exciting program is designed for students of all experience levels—including those brand new to bicycles! For beginners, balance bikes (without pedals or training wheels) are used to help them master balance as the foundation of riding. Once students confidently glide and balance, pedals will be added to their bikes to continue skill-building in a supportive and fun environment. Helmets and bicycles were provided Safety and expectations are reviewed before each class This unit has been a wonderful way for our young learners to build skills, confidence, and have fun while riding! Bond Project Updates Strides continue to be made on the CHS softball and baseball fields. We have even seen the addition of the Bulldog logo added to center field on the softball field already! The ticket booth is walled in and windows were installed this week. Inside CHS, new energy efficient LED lighting was installed to the main gym and mezzanine space. In the photo attached here you can see the new brighter lights compared to the old lighting. New Data Alert! Do you love to read? Do you love kids? We have an opportunity just for you! Creslane Elementary School is in its twelfth year of implementing the Intergenerational Reading Collaboration (IRC) Program. This school-based volunteer program supports kindergarten through third grade (K-3) student reading and the school's positive behavior culture. The IRC Program brings adults and children together in elementary classrooms for reading instruction in small groups under the direction of the teacher. Volunteers receive training and support to realize the shared goal of building the child's strong literacy ability by fourth grade. IRC is looking for dedicated volunteers to help out as their schedule allows. This includes being a substitute to cover classes when other volunteers are unavailable or joining a class for 2-3 mornings a week. Lots of team support and training provided! If you are "on the fence" about this opportunity, potential IRC volunteers often come to an IRC Team Meeting and meet the volunteers and visit a classroom to see how IRC "works." Creslane Elementary has seen marked improvement in reading due in part to this IRC effort. Come join us in making a difference! CSD40 Update | November 8, 2024 Important Dates November 8 - Grading day; No School November 11 - Veterans Day; No School November 18 - First Day of CHS Winter Sports Practice November 18-22 - CES & CMS Conferences November 25-29 - No School; Thanksgiving Break Superintendent's Message Dear CSD Families and Staff, We’re excited to share some recent developments, accomplishments, and opportunities that reflect the commitment and pride we all share for our students, staff, and the Creswell community. Each day, we continue to build a strong foundation for academic, athletic, and personal growth, and we appreciate your ongoing support in creating a safe, welcoming, and vibrant environment. Bond Project Updates Our bond projects are progressing steadily, with several improvements taking shape at Creswell High School. The turf installation for our baseball and softball fields, while slower than anticipated, is making reliable progress. Additionally, new irrigation systems are in place to help maintain the JV softball and youth soccer fields, moving us closer to establishing a sports complex that we believe will become the premiere sports facility in Lane County. We’re also excited about the newly designed mezzanine above the main gym, which will provide a versatile space for wrestling, cheer, and other groups to use. Exterior painting at CHS is set to begin as weather permits, with pressure washing underway to prepare the surfaces. Celebrating Student Achievements We are so proud of our Boys and Girls Soccer teams for their outstanding seasons and achievements this year. Our Boys team entered playoffs as league champions, and both teams battled through to the second round in single-elimination playoffs. Though their seasons have concluded, their hard work and sportsmanship have left a lasting impact. A special shout-out also goes to our middle school cross country team, which wrapped up a fantastic season with several runners finishing in the top ten at Districts. Way to go, Bulldogs & Tigers! A huge thank-you goes out to our National Honor Society students, who recently contributed their time to the Lane County Diaper Bank. Together, they repackaged an impressive 12,500 diapers, making a difference for families across our community. Engaging Students in Career Pathways Our CHS freshmen have recently engaged in their annual "Exploration of Career Pathways" event, designed to help them build employable skills, gain insights into various careers, and explore interests that will guide them toward a meaningful future. We are excited to support students in discovering their strengths and passions as they begin this important journey. A Focus on Health, Belonging, and Student Well-Being At Creswell School District, we are in the business of educating and caring for children—all children. Every student should feel valued, supported, and welcomed here. Our goal is to cultivate a culture of belonging where every child has the opportunity to thrive, both academically and personally. By nurturing a safe and inclusive environment, we ensure that Creswell is a place where all students are empowered to succeed and reach their full potential. Thank you for being part of our journey and for supporting our mission to create a positive, inclusive, and engaging experience for every student in CSD. Together, let’s continue to support each other and make Creswell a place where all can thrive, succeed, and lead. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District CHS Student Career Pathways Showcase Our Exploration of Career Pathways students held an incredible showcase this week! They presented their game design and an interactive display to peers, staff, and guests. Some students shared how the process highlighted their strengths, while others felt mastery over key parts of the project. It's inspiring to see our students explore multiple skills within one focused project, leading to a fun and interactive event like this! CHS Soccer Teams Kick it into High gear with Playoffs! Creswell Boys Soccer entered Round 2 of Playoffs and played at home on Tuesday, November 5th against Blanchet Catholic. The hard fought battle ended with Blanchet Catholic on top 1-0 in the single elimination bracket. Despite the loss, we are proud of our Bulldogs and their incredible season! A hard fought battle by our Girls Soccer Team came up short this week. Losing 1 to 0 to Four Rivers in Round 2 of Playoffs. We are so proud of our Bulldogs in their epic season this year heading into playoffs. Top Finishes for CMS Cross Country Congratulations to CMS students, Jagger, Pearl, and Riley for their top 10 finishes at Districts! Way to go, Tigers!! Bond Project Updates Creswell School District is making notable progress on several bond-funded projects, enhancing facilities across the sports complex and school grounds. The turf installation at the softball and baseball fields, while moving gradually, is on track, and new irrigation systems are now in place for the JV softball and youth soccer fields, improving maintenance and playability. Good weather allowed CSD staff to begin work on a new ticket booth at Creswell High School, with special thanks to Gil Castro for his dedication. Additionally, CHS is receiving a fresh paint job that aligns with the school’s colors, adding spirit to the campus. Preparations are also underway for the new mezzanine space above the main gym, where groups like wrestling and cheer will have their own training area. Fall Fun with our Creslane Kinders Our Creslane Kinders visited Northen Lights Christmas Tree Farm in Pleasant Hill, and learned about what it takes to grow a giant pumpkin, the importance of animals and arachnids on a farm, and enjoyed a fun corn maze activity known as the Bee Waggle game. They also got to pick up a pumpkin and gourd to take home. Thank you, Northern Lights Christmas Tree Farm. Creswell NHS Students "Pack it Up" Creswell High School NHS (National Honor Society) students helped the Lane County Diaper Bank with the repackaging of 12,500 diapers, which helps up to 500 babies get covered in Lane County. I want to make you aware that there has been an emerging trend across the nation of false cybersecurity threats targeting school districts. I assure you that we take any threat seriously and that we have established protocols to follow for threats to students and staff. The safety protocols include immediately engaging local law enforcement as well as collaborating with the FBI when necessary to assess whether a threat is credible. In the event that a threat is determined to be credible, we would immediately put into action our Safety Response Protocols to secure our schools and facilities. On a more positive note, I would like to highlight some exciting achievements from our student athletes. Both of our soccer teams have received well-deserved accolades, with several players ranked among the top scorers and assist leaders in the state. CSD40 Update - Gearing up to Thrive, Succeed, Lead!
CSD40 Update | August 30, 2024 Important Dates August 30 - All Offices Closed September 2 - Labor Day September 4 - Classes begin for 6th & 9th graders September 5 - Classes begin for grades 1-5, 7-8, 10-12 September 5-11 - Staggered start for Kindergartners September 9 - CHS School Pictures Superintendent's Message Dear CSD Families and Staff, As we embark on a new school year, I am filled with excitement and optimism for the journey ahead. Our theme this year— Thrive, Succeed, Lead —speaks to our collective mission to ensure that every student in our district is given the opportunity to grow, achieve, and become leaders in their own right. This mission is not just about academics; it’s about nurturing the whole child, helping them to thrive in every aspect of their lives. The time is right and bright for us to lead our students into the 2024-25 school year. Our district is in a strong and stable position, with a senior leadership team that has been intact for the past 4-5 years, providing consistency and strategic improvements across all schools and departments. Five of our seven board members have served alongside me for the past six years, while the other two have brought fresh perspectives in the last two years. We are beginning the school year with a full complement of staff, ready to support our students. Over the past five years, we’ve increased the rigor and relevance of our curricula through K-12 adoptions in ELA, Math, and Science. Additionally, the passage of our facilities bond in May 2023 by 70% voter approval, combined with a $4 million OSCIM Grant and over $7 million in seismic grants, means we will invest more than $29 million in facility improvements over the next three years. This investment ensures that Creswell schools are equipped with updated safety measures, modernized classrooms, and enhanced athletic fields, creating optimal learning environments for our students for the next 20 years. To our dedicated staff, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your commitment to our students. As we focus on our theme this year, I encourage each of you to keep in mind the words of Theodore Roosevelt: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Leading with your heart, showing genuine care and compassion for our students, is what makes the greatest impact. The relationships you build with them are the foundation of a successful educational experience, and it is through these connections that our schools and district will truly thrive. I’m also thrilled to announce that, starting this school year, Creswell School District will be providing free meals to all students through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. This means that every student will have access to nutritious meals at no cost, ensuring that all our students are ready to learn and succeed each day. Safety and Well-Being We want our schools to be safe and welcoming places where students can learn and grow both academically and emotionally. A safe school environment is built on support, respect, and community. How we handle situations that arise is crucial for ensuring safety at school. This school year, Creswell School District is implementing the Standard Response Protocol, which aligns with local and national guidelines for school safety. This protocol provides clear procedures that everyone—students, staff, and first responders—understands and can follow during emergencies. You can learn more about each response in the Standard Response Protocol [here] and find additional information from the I Love You Guys Foundation [here]. This protocol enhances our existing safety practices and ensures consistent terminology across schools and emergency services nationwide. Each school year, students will receive age-appropriate training on how to respond in different emergency situations. Bond Projects and Seismic Updates I am also pleased to share updates on the ongoing work with our bond projects and seismic improvements, particularly at Creswell High School. This September, we will begin the installation of new turf on our baseball and softball fields, providing our students with state-of-the-art facilities that will enhance their athletic experience. Additionally, we are excited about the creation of a dedicated wrestling and cheer room within the gym, alongside updates to the locker and team rooms. The replacement of the canopies along the front of the school and inside the courtyard will further contribute to the safety and aesthetic appeal of our campus. These improvements are just a small portion of the many ongoing planning and projects being addressed, reflecting our commitment to providing the best possible environment for our students to thrive. It is through each completed project that we feel such gratitude for our community’s support in passing the Bond in May of 2023, and showing their care and commitment to our students. Thank you! As we start this new year together, let’s continue to support one another and keep our focus on the incredible potential within each of our students. Together, we will thrive, succeed, and lead. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District Bond Updates This summer at CHS, several exciting projects are underway. New steel canopies, replacing older ones in need of repair, are being prepared for installation along the school's front and inside courtyard areas. These sturdy red-painted canopies will provide better shelter for students. Meanwhile, seismic improvements continue with new stabilizing hardware installed. Additionally, a dedicated space for wrestling and cheer is being developed, and preparations for installing turf on the baseball and softball fields are progressing steadily. More detailed updates can be found on our website and real-time updates on our social media pages (Facebook and Instagram). CSD Staff is BACK! Illness Reminder Ensuring the health and well-being of our children is a top priority, and keeping sick kids at home is a crucial step in safeguarding their health and the health of others. When your child is unwell, it's essential to prioritize their recovery and prevent the spread of illness. Please keep them home from school to rest and recuperate. Encourage good hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces at home. By taking these simple yet vital steps, we can create a healthier and safer environment for our children and the entire community. Your efforts make a difference in keeping illness at bay and fostering a stronger, more resilient family.
