  • CSD40 Update - Honoring Our Board, Our Students, and...

CSD40 Update | January 16, 2026     Important Dates January 19 - No School, MLK Jr. Day January 22 - CHS Winter Concert January 29 - CES Family Math Night January 30 - No School, Grading Day   Superintendent's Message   Dear CSD Staff and Families, As we move through January, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many reasons we are proud to be part of the Creswell School District—and to share important information about how we are planning responsibly for the future. January is School Board Appreciation Month , and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our CSD School Board members. Serving on a school board requires countless hours of study, discussion, and decision-making. All in service of students, staff, and our community. I am grateful for their leadership, thoughtful governance, and commitment to doing what is best for Creswell students. This time of year also brings exciting energy across our schools as we celebrate the success of our  winter sports programs . Our student-athletes continue to represent Creswell with pride, demonstrating teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. We are proud not only of their accomplishments in competition, but of the character and discipline they develop through participation. Beyond athletics, we see growth and development happening every day in our classrooms and schools. At all levels, Creswell students are engaging deeply with curriculum, building leadership skills, strengthening study habits, and learning how to collaborate and problem-solve. These experiences are what prepare our students for success well beyond their time in our schools. Alongside these celebrations, I want to be transparent about an important and more somber topic: district finances and long-term budget planning. As you may have heard through media reports over the past six months, the state of Oregon is experiencing an economic downturn. Two months ago, Governor Tina Kotek informed the Oregon Department of Education of a revised economic forecast and an anticipated statewide revenue shortfall of approximately 5%. In turn, ODE advised all Oregon school districts to prepare for potential funding reductions beginning in the 2026–27 school year. Creswell has also experienced enrollment decline since the COVID-19 pandemic—from approximately 1,250 students to about 1,115 students today—resulting in a state revenue reduction of roughly  $1.5 million . We identified this funding gap early, in 2021, when students returned to in-person learning. In 2022, we forecasted a funding “cliff” driven by declining enrollment combined with the eventual expiration of federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds that were temporarily helping bridge the gap. In response, the district implemented creative budgeting strategies and began aligning staffing levels to enrollment through attrition, meaning we did not fill certain positions following resignations or retirements. These proactive steps allowed us to successfully navigate the 2023–24 and 2024–25 funding cliffs without mid-year cuts or layoffs in 2025-26, even as we faced rising costs from inflation and ongoing challenges with state funding that has not kept pace with expenses. While these strategies were effective, the continued enrollment decline, years of inflationary cost increases, and inadequate state funding adjustments have resulted in another projected funding challenge for the 2026–27 school year. In December, we received the state’s second revenue forecast, and we are currently working to identify the funding gap we will need to resolve for the 2026–27 operating budget. I want to reassure our community that Creswell is one of the districts that will  not  be implementing mid-year cuts or layoffs this school year. However, we do anticipate a challenging budget landscape for next year and for 2027–28 as well. One important upside for Creswell is the passage of our local bond and the approval of several state facilities improvement grants, which has allowed us to address critical infrastructure needs without tapping into the general fund. This has given our district greater flexibility and stability than many others across the state that must divert operating dollars to facility needs. In my next bi-weekly report, I will share more detail about the specific strategies we have used, and will continue to use, to plan responsibly, avoid sudden disruptions, and position Creswell for long-term stability. Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and trust. Together, we will continue to celebrate our successes, support our students, and thoughtfully navigate the challenges ahead. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District               Can you "Name That School Board Member?" It’s School Board Appreciation Month, and we put our Creswell students to the test! We had some laughs (and some very creative guesses), but the message behind the fun is simple: Beyond the names, we thank our board for their service and dedication to Creswell students! Our board members volunteer countless hours, enduring long nights and making tough decisions to ensure every student has a bright future. They are the bridge between our community and our classrooms, and we are so grateful for their vision. Join us in saying "Thank You" to our board!  Flame On! Ms. Olson’s class completed a fun Flame Lab last week!  Students tested how different substances react in a controlled flame to identify unique chemical elements. Half the challenge was getting the Bunsen burner started—then carefully observing the subtle differences in flame colors. We love seeing hands-on, inquiry-based learning happening in the classroom! CHS Wrestling CHS Wrestling gave Thurston (best team in the state) their closest dual of the season! Most recently dual girls placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th; boys placed 2md, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th across multiple weight classes. The CHS Wrestling program has the following home duals coming up: January 28th vs Sutherlin & Pleasant Hill at 6pm February 14th - Special District Regional Tournament 9am Keep it up, Dawgs! PC: Jeremy Dumford Big ideas in small hands!   Ms. Greene’s kindergarten class put their creativity to work during Enrichments with LEGO®—and the results are amazing! PC: Mary Lou Greene     It's a Great Time to be a Bulldog! CHS Winter Assembly Today’s CHS Winter Sports & Recognition Assembly was full of Bulldog pride! We celebrated our winter athletes—Boys & Girls Basketball, Cheer, and Wrestling—who shared about upcoming games and competitions and encouraged classmates to come out and show their support. Dr. Towe also recognized our Excellent 8, students nominated by teachers for demonstrating excellence in the classroom. And our Lane County Design Summit participants proudly showcased their competition designs—highlighting creativity, collaboration, and real-world learning in action. (Watch to the end of the video to catch some of the IMPRESSIVE moves from Staff during their assembly game!) Building Confidence & Strong Learning Habits Coach Mindy is back at Creslane, connecting with our 5th graders and helping them build confidence, resilience, and strong learning habits. Through meaningful conversations and practical strategies, she’s empowering students to face challenges with a growth mindset. Skills that will serve them well now and in the years ahead. We’re grateful for the continued impact she makes on our students. Creswell Cheer Takes Home Third Place at Thurston Competition! Our CHS Cheer team is entering their competitive season this winter and kicked things off at Thurston's "Colt Cheer Challenge" this past Saturday, January 10th. CHS competes in the Game Day Competition which includes a 3 minutes routine that requires teams to perform a band dance, situation cheer (with cues given on the spot, not known in advance), a crowd leading cheer, and school fight song. The team heads to two more local competitions and then onto State. You can catch them at the following spots: January 17 - Sweet Home High School January 31 - Roseburg High School February 13 - OSAA State Cheer Championships, Oregon City High School Let's go, Bulldogs! Creslane Leadership Presents to CSD School Board The CSD School Board had the pleasure of receiving a presentation from members of the Creslane Student Leadership class with Ms. Halley this week. Their presentation centered on sharing about Creslane climate and school culture, experiences and how they have helped shape their positive experience as students, and what an impact Enrichments are having in their schedule. • CSD40 Update - 🎄District Celebrations and Your Voice...

CSD40 Update | December 19, 2025     Important Dates December 22-January 5  - No School, Winter Break January 5  - Staff Inservice January 6  - Students Return January 19 - No School, MLK Jr. Day   Superintendent's Message   Dear CSD Staff and Families, As we approach Winter Break, I am filled with gratitude and pride as I reflect on the energy, creativity, and learning taking place across Creswell School District. Our schools have been alive with meaningful experiences that celebrate student growth, curiosity, and community. Over the past several weeks, students across the district have been exploring holiday traditions from countries around the world, making real-world connections to their learning. In our classrooms, students have also been creatively engaging in science, asking questions, experimenting, and discovering in ways that showcase both curiosity and critical thinking. The season has also brought beautiful musical culmination performances. Our CMS Choir and the bands from both Creswell Middle School and Creswell High School shared their talents through concerts that reflected months of practice and dedication. These performances are a powerful reminder of the role the arts play in student expression and confidence. Festive fun has been evident at every campus—from assemblies and spirit days to classroom celebrations—creating moments of joy and connection as we head into the holiday season. These experiences are made possible by the commitment of our staff and the support of our families and volunteers, and they contribute to a school environment where students feel engaged, supported, and excited to learn. As you read through this newsletter, you will also find information about the  Superintendent Search Survey , an important opportunity for staff, families, and community members to provide feedback as we begin the process of identifying Creswell School District’s next leader. Your voice matters, and I encourage you to take a few moments to share your perspective. As we enter 2025, we do so with a renewed focus on supporting student growth and achievement. The new year will bring state testing, and I am confident that with continued hard work, our students will rise to meet these challenges. Our staff’s commitment to preparing and encouraging every learner sets a strong foundation for their success. Thank you for your partnership, dedication, and care for our schools. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District POV: Creslane Staff White Elephant Gift Exchange POV: You came for the staff meeting and somehow left with a GIANT pencil, potting soil, and a whole lot of laughs. Creslane Staff White Elephant Gift Exchange = festive chaos, big smiles, and the best kind of holiday fun.             67 Days Smarter & Wrapping Up 2025 in Style! Wednesday marked the 67th day of school at Creslane Elementary and the final assembly of 2025 for our Creslane Mustangs—and what a celebration it was! Students were recognized with Golden Awards, celebrated earning a school-wide potato chip party for meeting attendance goals,  and enjoyed some amazing performances. The “Jolly Jumpers” wowed the crowd by showcasing what they’ve learned during their jump rope unit in PE, while the CMS Choir and CHS Band filled the room with music and holiday spirit.  Way to go, Creslane Mustangs—keep showing up, cheering each other on, and shining bright as we head into the new year! 6th Grade Scientists at Work!  Mrs. Reed’s 6th grade science class has been learning all about cells. To bring their learning to life, students recently created their own cell models—using only items found at home or in nature! No purchases allowed. We saw incredible creativity: bread, LEGOs, yard clippings, glitter glue, and so much more. Each student also explained the organelles in their model and how they help the cell function. Holidays Around the World Ms. Hyde's Kindergarten class have been studying holidays around the world and recently enjoyed tamales while learning about Mexico's traditions. Fun & tasty! A Symphony of Winter Talent It was a week of spectacular music at CSD as our student performers lit up the stage for their annual Winter performances. The CMS Choir delivered a moving set of harmonious melodies, while the CMS and CHS Bands showcased incredible technical skill and energy with their festive instrumental repertoires. From the developing talents of our middle schoolers to the sophisticated, high-caliber performance of our high school musicians, these concerts were a beautiful testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and directors alike. • CSD40 Update - Holiday Event Guide & Service in Action

CSD40 Update | December 5, 2025     Important Dates December 7 - CMS Candy Cane Village Fundraiser December 9 - CES Winter Choir Concert December 11 - CHS FASFA Night December 13 - Bulldog Winter Market December 15 - CMS Winter Choir Concert December 16 - CMS/CHS Winter Band Concert December 22-January 5  - No School, Winter Break   Superintendent's Message   Dear CSD Staff and Families, December is a special month in Creswell, filled with opportunities to come together and uplift our students. From festive celebrations to meaningful acts of service, we continue to see the best of what makes our district and community so strong. This week kicks off the Creswell Festival of Trees, with proceeds supporting Creswell youth through Creswell First. At Creswell Middle School, the much-anticipated Candy Cane Village event will be underway, helping raise funds for our 8th grade class. And soon, at the community Winter Lights Festival, our high school entrepreneurs will showcase their work at the annual Bulldog Winter Market, alongside a performance by our Creswell student choir. These events are wonderful opportunities to support our students directly while enjoying the spirit of the season. We are also incredibly proud of our Creswell students for the ways they are giving back. Most recently, our National Honor Society students packed more than  13,000 diapers  for the Lane County Diaper Bank. Just before Thanksgiving, CHS students organized a food drive that provided  20 full holiday meals  to Creswell families. And our Creslane students collected an impressive  3,346 food items  for the Creswell Food Pantry. These efforts show the heart of our students and the strength of our community when we come together with purpose. I want to highlight how essential strong attendance is to student success. Creslane has set a goal for 90% of students to reach 90% attendance or better, and they are off to a strong start. Quarter 1 saw 77 students with 100% attendance, and this quarter the school is holding steady at 80%. Strong attendance supports student success, and we hope to see this positive trend continue across our district. As you may recall, I announced on October 10th my plans to retire at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Since that time, the Board has held two special meetings to select a search firm that will lead the process of identifying Creswell’s next superintendent. On November 18, 2025, the Board met with several search firms to hear their proposals, and at the November 25, 2025 special meeting, the Board selected Human Capital Enterprises to conduct the search. We will continue to provide regular updates and offer opportunities for staff, families, and community members to engage in the process and share input. As the holiday season draws near, let us share kindness and celebrate the connections that make our community strong. Thank you for all you do to support Creswell students, staff, and families.  Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District Service in Action!   Our CHS National Honor Society students showed up in a big way today — packing  13,275 diapers in just 2 hours for the Lane County Diaper Bank! • CSD40 Update - From College Apps to Career Explorati...

CSD40 Update | November 21, 2025     Important Dates November 24-28 - No School, Thanksgiving Break December 3 - CES Picture Retakes December 7 - CMS 8th Grade Fundraiser December 9 - CES Winter Choir Concert   Superintendent's Message   Dear CSD Staff and Families, As we step into this season of gratitude and celebration, I’m reminded once again of the vibrant learning, connection, and growth happening every day across our Creswell schools. This week, I want to take a moment to acknowledge several highlights that reflect the dedication of our students, staff, and families. At Creswell High School, our seniors are diving into this year’s College Application Week with enthusiasm. They are drafting personal statements, exploring scholarship opportunities, and completing applications with support from CHS staff. Many are preparing to take advantage of the Oregon Promise and other pathways that help make post-secondary education more accessible. We are incredibly proud of the hard work they are investing in their futures. At Creslane Elementary, our young Mustangs are making big strides during their Learn to Ride unit. Kindergarten and 1st-grade students are building confidence, coordination, and independence as they practice bike-riding skills. It is always inspiring to see them celebrate these milestones and cheer each other on. At Creswell Middle School, our Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students continue to engage in real-world learning experiences. This month they heard from a local business owner about leadership and entrepreneurship, and our 8th graders attended the county-wide Career Expo, where they explored a wide range of industries through hands-on activities and conversations with local professionals. These experiences help our students make meaningful connections between classroom learning and future career opportunities. Today, we also recognize Substitute Appreciation Day. Our substitutes play a vital role in keeping classrooms running smoothly whenever support is needed. Their willingness to step in, adapt, and serve our students with care makes an enormous difference. We are grateful for each substitute who contributes to the strength and continuity of our learning community. This season is also a time when teachers and families come together for fall conferences—a meaningful opportunity to celebrate student growth and collaborate on next steps. These conversations reinforce the crucial partnership between home and school, and I’m thankful for the thoughtful preparation and connection that our staff and families bring to this process. As we move through this season of thankfulness, I hope each of you finds moments of joy, rest, and connection with family, friends and new friendships. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to helping Creswell students thrive, succeed, and lead. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District It's College Application Week at CHS! College Application Week is a dedicated time to provide time, support, and information to our seniors about accessing, applying, funding and attending post-secondary institutions. Each day there is a focus on a specific activity that students need to be aware of when applying for college.  Throughout the week students developed professional emails, set up their username and password for Oregon Student Aid (OSAC), reviewed the Oregon Promise Application and FASFA, and  applied to Lane Community College. Students also, reviewed essay writing with CHS teacher, Liz Babbs. Reviewing OSAC prompts and worked on completing the OSAC. Thank you to CHS staff for supplying this dedicated week to furthering their opportunities after high school!   CMS Turkey Trot Our CMS students participated in a school-wide Turkey Trot fundraiser to earn funds to go towards each grade's 8th grade class party. We saw runners and walkers alike amassing numerous laps and funds for their grade. Mr. Cardwell brought the fun, leading the way as the official lead "Turkey."                                 Thank you, CSD Substitutes! Our Creslane Leadership students have a message: THANK YOU, substitutes!  On Substitute Appreciation Day, we’re sending a huge shout-out to the incredible people who keep learning moving forward whenever they step into our classrooms. We’re grateful for you, today and every day! Japan Paint Party Success!   Creswell High School’s Japan Paint Party brought together students, families, and community members for an evening of art, culture, and fundraising to support our upcoming student trip to Japan. Twenty-four of our 27 student travelers took part in serving and hosting the event’s 56 painters, supported by 11 dedicated parent volunteers. Local artist Holland Lee led participants through a koi-inspired painting while sharing  The Legend of the Dragon’s Gate , a story that speaks to perseverance and transformation—an important theme in Japanese culture and a fitting message for our students. The event also featured 13 themed raffle baskets and a 50/50 raffle. The most popular raffle item was the  Japanese Botanicals LEGO Collection, which included a Bonsai set, Lucky Bamboo, Plum Blossom, and a 1,000-piece puzzle of Japan. Guests enjoyed a featured drink, Japanese Lemonade, made with citrus ginger jelly, soda, lemonade, and Butt erfly Pea Blossom powder that created a beautiful purple-to-yellow gradient. Snack plates included both sweet and savory rice crackers—apple cinnamon on the sweet cracker and lemon chive cream cheese with smoked salmon on the savory—along with fruit and mini mochi. Thank you to everyone who attended or supported the event. Your participation helps make this cultural and educational experience possible for our CHS students. Look for our next Paint Party event this spring! CMS Students Explore Future Pathways at Countywide Career Expo Creswell Middle School students joined 948 seventh- and eighth-graders from across Lane County at this year’s Career Expo at Spark at Booth-Kelly. The event gave students a hands-on look at the wide range of careers available right here in our region, guided by passionate professionals eager to share their work. Twenty-eight local businesses representing seventeen industries—from healthcare, technology, and architecture to veterinary sciences—designed exciting, interactive activities that brought each career to life. Students tried hands-only CPR, tested out a rock crushing simulator, designed Lego streetscapes, built cardboard treehouses, took on design and branding challenges, and much more. The experience wasn’t just fun—it was meaningful. Survey results show the impact: 68% said the Expo encouraged them to think more about career options and what it means to be a good employee. 70% said it helped them understand the importance of education. 64% said it gave them a clearer sense of the steps needed to reach their goals. We are deeply grateful to the incredible industry and education partners who make this opportunity possible each year. Thanks to their time, creativity, and enthusiasm, our students came away inspired, curious, and excited to imagine the many pathways their futures might hold. CMS Cheer Makes Moves & Mascot History!  This season marked the CMS Cheer program’s debut into competitive cheer, participating in three consecutive competitions throughout November. The Tigers earned two second-place finishes at local events and took their talent to the state stage this past weekend at the OCCA Game Day Championships. Competing against programs that traditionally feed into powerhouse 6A high schools—an impressive challenge for a team that feeds into 3A—our Tigers held their own. CMS Cheer finished 6th out of 11 teams in the Junior Rec Division, narrowly missing a 5th-place trophy. CMS Cheer also made history as the first-ever Junior team to compete in the Mascot Division—earning  first place at both the local and state levels this season! Even more remarkable? This program is only in its second year. We can’t wait to see what’s ahead for this incredible group. Go, Tigers! 🥳 Our Fun-Filled Bike Riding Unit is Back for November! 🚴‍♀️ We are so excited to bring back the Bike Learn to Ride Unit for all of our Creslane Kindergarten and First-Grade students this November! This wonderful program helps our youngest learners gain a skill they can use for a lifetime: riding a bicycle! We partner with Lane County Safe Routes to School and our amazing PE teacher, Lynda Blutreich, to make this happen. What Parents Should Know: 🚲All Skill Levels Welcome! If your child has never been on a bike, this is the perfect place to start. 🚲Focus on Balance: We start beginners on special balance bikes (no pedals!) to quickly teach them the most important part of riding: stability and gliding. Once they've mastered balance, we add the pedals! 🚲Everything is Provided: We supply all the necessary equipment, including bikes and helmets, to make it easy for everyone to participate. 🚲Safety First: We review safety expectations and proper handling before every session. This unit is truly a highlight for our students, helping them build confidence, coordination, and a love for physical activity. They leave feeling so proud of what they've accomplished! Fundraising Never Tasted So Sweet Our CMS FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) groups hosted Bob Cerince from Nothing Bundt Cakes to learn about the franchise business model,  practice talking to prospective customers, and also learning about the groups' upcoming fundraiser.  Both FBLA and HOSA will be selling Nothing Bundt Cake vouchers now until December 3rd to help earn funds towards State competition fees. Vouchers will be distributed before the Winter Break. Looking for something tasty that supports our students? See a CMS FBLA or HOSA member for more details! Creswell 4-H Kickoff Harvest Party Creswell 4-H enrollment is still open and our kickoff party is TODAY! Friday, November 21st, 5:30-7:30pm at the Creswell Community Center on 99 S 1st St! Do you love to read?  Do you love kids?  We have an opportunity just for you! Creslane Elementary School is in its twelfth year of implementing the Intergenerational Reading Collaboration (IRC) Program. This school-based volunteer program supports kindergarten through third grade (K-3) student reading and the school's positive behavior culture. The IRC Program brings adults and children together in elementary classrooms for reading instruction in small groups under the direction of the teacher. Volunteers receive training and support to realize the shared goal of building the child's strong literacy ability by fourth grade. IRC is looking for dedicated volunteers to help out as their schedule allows. This includes being a substitute to cover classes when other volunteers are unavailable or joining a class for 2-3 mornings a week. Lots of team support and training provided! If you are "on the fence" about this opportunity, potential IRC volunteers often come to an IRC Team Meeting and meet the volunteers and visit a classroom to see how IRC "works." Creslane Elementary has seen marked improvement in reading due in part to this IRC effort. Come join us in making a difference! For more information or to apply: https://creswell.k12.or.us/ces/irc-intergenerational-reading-collaboration/ State Budget Proposals Are Out—Here’s What Families Should Know The Governor and Legislature have released preliminary budget reduction proposals for state agencies, including education. While no immediate cuts are being made , this planning process could impact Oregon schools in the future. Superintendent Mike Johnson has shared an update to help families understand what’s happening, what it means for Creswell School District, and how we’re keeping students at the center of every decision. Read the full message here:  https://www.parentsquare.com/feeds/65008971 Offices Closed November 27-28 There is no school starting Monday, November 24th. CSD office staff will have limited availability this week due to training and conferences. All CSD offices will be closed November 27-28. Staff and students return Monday, December 1st.  Have a wonderful break! Inclement Weather Reminder It's good to keep in mind that when wintry weather arrives, it brings with it the possibility of school cancellations or delays. We encourage families to have a plan in place in case schedules change due to inclement weather. School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be made by 6:30a.m. and are driven by the safety of our staff and students. School closure or delayed start information will be: ▪️ Shared via email, text, app notifications, and/or voice calls via ParentSquare. ▪️ Posted on FlashAlert.net and our District website ▪️ Broadcast by FlashAlert Messenger to subscribers via email and push notifications through the FA Messenger app. We encourage you to subscribe to FlashAlert today. What does the announcement mean?🤔 🔷School Closure: There is no school for students; essential staff will be on campus. 🔷Two-Hour Delay: School will start two hours late and end at the normal dismissal time for a regular school day. 🔷Snow Routes: Some school bus routes have alternate "snow routes" that may be used when snow and ice make road conditions hazardous at higher and steeper elevations. When school buses operate on these snow routes, some students will have a different bus stop pick-up and/or drop-off location and time than on the regular route.

  • State Budget Proposals Are Out—Here’s What Families ...

Dear Creswell School District Staff & Families, I want to share important information about the state budget process currently underway and what it could mean for school districts across Oregon, including Creswell. These conversations are complex, but my goal is to explain them clearly and keep our focus where it belongs—on students. The Oregon Department of Education has released its  Budget Reduction Options Memo , which outlines possible reductions the state may consider. You can read that memo here:   Oregon Department of Education Budget Reduction Options Memo   This review process is happening in response to the passage of HR 1 at the federal level and a decrease in Oregon’s September Revenue Forecast released on August 27. As a result, the Governor and Legislature have initiated several actions over the past few months: September 16:  The Governor directed state agencies to reduce costs, including suspending non-essential travel and delaying non-critical programs. October 1:  The Legislative Fiscal Office (LFO) directed agencies to prepare potential budget reduction options. October 17:  Agencies submitted draft reduction plans to the Department of Administrative Services (DAS). November 3:  Agencies submitted final reduction options to the LFO. November 10:  These proposed reductions, including ODE’s, were posted publicly. November 17–19:  Key agencies, including ODE on November 18, are presenting their proposals to the Legislature’s Ways and Means Committees. December:  The next State Revenue Forecast will be released. February 2026:  The Legislature will finalize any changes during the 2026 Legislative Session. It is essential to note that  no immediate cuts are being made.  This is a planning exercise only. No final decisions will occur until the 2026 legislative session begins on February 2. While we may not agree with every proposed reduction, we appreciate that the Governor and ODE have prioritized protecting programs that directly serve students—especially core classroom instruction, special education services, and programs with mandatory case loads and federal requirements. At Creswell School District, we remain committed to keeping students at the center of every decision we make. We understand that reductions to K–12 funding would fall hardest on students, staff, and families. If districts were eventually required to reduce budgets, it could result in fewer school days or fewer staff positions—outcomes we hope to avoid. Oregon voters wisely created the  Education Stability Fund  for circumstances just like this. This fund currently holds more than $1.2 billion available for use during the 2025–27 biennium. We urge the Governor and Legislature to use this renewable reserve—just as they did during the pandemic—to protect schools from the most damaging cuts. Over the next several months, we have an important opportunity to advocate together for a budget that puts students first. Oregonians have a long history of coming together during challenging times, and our students need us to show that same commitment now—ensuring their academic, health, and nutrition needs are met. We will continue to monitor updates closely and communicate clearly as new information becomes available. Thank you for your partnership, your advocacy, and your steadfast support of Creswell students. In partnership,   Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District

  • CSD40 Update - 🍂Fall Festivities, Hands-On Learning,...

CSD40 Update | November 7, 2025     Important Dates November 10 - No School, Grading Day November 11 - No School, Veterans Day November 17  - CHS Winter Sports Practices Begin November 24-28 - No School, Thanksgiving Break   Superintendent's Message   Dear CSD Staff and Families, As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year, we are filled with gratitude for the many opportunities available to Creswell students. From striving for excellence in and out of the classroom to engaging in hands-on learning and celebrating the fun that the fall season brings, there is much to be thankful for. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the many staff members, volunteers, coaches, and community supporters who make these experiences possible. At Creswell High School, freshmen recently participated in the annual   Exploration of Career Pathways  event. This experience helps students build employable skills, gain insight into a variety of careers, and explore interests that will guide them toward meaningful futures. This year’s project challenged students to design and 3D print custom fidget toys, combining creativity and problem-solving across multiple CTE disciplines. At Creslane Elementary, students and staff are focusing on goal setting as part of their commitment to growth and achievement. Families recently joined in on  Literacy Night: Camp Read-a-Lot , complete with stories, s’mores, and smiles. Creslane students also demonstrated their kindness and community spirit through  Socktober , collecting hundreds of pairs of socks for the Creswell Family Resource Center. Meanwhile, Creswell Middle School   blended fun and science during its annual  Pumpkin Drop . Students engineered creative solutions to keep their pumpkins intact when dropped from a tall lift—a hands-on STEM activity that combined teamwork, design thinking, and a touch of fall fun. We remain committed to fostering spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential. Together we can continue building schools where every student has the opportunity to thrive, succeed, and lead. As always, the number one priority of Creswell School District is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for every student. Thank you for your partnership and support. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District Pumpkin Patch Visit for Kinders Our Creslane Kinders attended their annual trip to the pumpkin patch last week. They enjoyed a tour of the farm, running around the hay maze, tackling the sunflower maze with the always enjoyable Bee Waggle game, and getting to pick out their own special pumpkin to take home. Thank you to our parent volunteers and our awesome teachers for putting together this fun trip for our youngest Mustangs! Exploration of Career Pathways Collaboration in action! Students worked across multiple disciplines to design and 3D print custom fidget toys — combining creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning. This project highlights how career-connected experiences spark innovation and real-world skills in our classrooms. ¡Qué delicioso! Our CHS Spanish 1 students recently got a taste of culture by cooking up fried plantains!  Through hands-on learning, students explored Latin American cuisine while practicing Spanish vocabulary related to food and cooking. A fun (and tasty!) way to bring language and culture to life in the classroom. Ms. Jenna’s 2nd graders are off on another adventure! This month they explored the history and artistry of Mayan masks. Check out this photo where you can see how students designed and created their own colorful versions!  We love seeing our young students learn about new cultures and express their creativity along the way! Fall Fun Across CSD! 🍁🎃 From  creative costumes to friendly competitions, Creswell School District campuses were full of fall spirit! CMS hosted its Fall Rally featuring a costume contest by popular vote, broom races, mystery candy challenges, inflatable suit battles, and even a dance-off! They also put their STEM skills to the test with a pumpkin drop experiment. Creslane students enjoyed a festive Fall Festival, and CHS got into the spirit with several costumes as well.  It’s been a season of fun, teamwork, and creativity across CSD! Camp Read-a-lot - Literacy Night Families gathered for a cozy night of stories, s’mores, and smiles during our Literacy Night at Creslane Elementary. From campfire tales read by our amazing CES staff to fun literacy games and hands-on activities, it was a wonderful evening celebrating our love of reading together. Socktober Our Creslane students showed big hearts this month by participating in Socktober — collecting new pairs of socks for those in need throughout October! Today, they proudly delivered their donations to the Creswell Family Resource Center, helping keep our community warm and cared for as the weather turns colder. Way to go, Creslane Mustangs, for spreading kindness one pair of socks at a time!  Hitting the Right Chord with Ms. Halley Our Creslane students and staff are participating in goal setting this year, and Ms. Halley provided the opportunity for our Mustangs to vote on what her goal would be this year. They could pick from learning to speak Spanish, knitting, or playing the guitar. They chose guitar! Check out Ms. Halley working on her goal with some other Creslane students. Way to go, Ms. Halley! He-Man Volleyball & Powder-Puff Football – Thursday, Nov. 13 Join us for one of Creswell High’s favorite traditions! 💪🏐🏈 Come cheer on your favorite class during our He-Man Volleyball (5–6 PM in the gym) and Powder-Puff Football (7:30–8:30 PM on the field) games. In the spirit of giving, we’ll also be collecting snack and easy-meal donations for our CSD Resource Center. Measles Detected in Marion County Wastewater The Oregon Health Authority recently detected the measles virus in wastewater samples from Marion County, though no individual cases have been identified. Because measles is extremely contagious and can cause serious illness, families are encouraged to review their vaccination status. The best protection is the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine—two doses are recommended for children at 12–15 months and again at 4–6 years. Adults unsure of their vaccination status should contact their healthcare provider. If measles symptoms appear (high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, followed by a rash), call your healthcare provider before visiting to prevent exposing others.

First, I want to take a moment to recognize our incredible school leaders during  Principal Appreciation Month - Amy Halley, Julie Johansen, and Dr. Chad Towe . Our principals work tirelessly to create welcoming, safe, and high-achieving environments for our students and staff. Their dedication, leadership, and heart make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students every single day. Please join me in thanking them for the important work they do. It’s also  Homecoming Week at Creswell High School , and the energy across campus has been fantastic. We hope you’ll join us for the  Homecoming Game tonight at 7 p.m.  to cheer on our Bulldogs and celebrate our students, staff, and community spirit. Across the district, our  fall athletic teams  are nearing the end of their seasons — competing in their Senior Nights and pushing hard for playoff spots at the high school level, or concluding a fun and enriching opportunity at the middle school level. We’re grateful for the opportunities these programs provide to help our students learn teamwork, leadership, and perseverance while representing Creswell with pride. This month also marked  School Bus Safety Week , a time to recognize the critical role our  CSD transportation team  plays in keeping our students safe every day. We deeply appreciate our dedicated bus drivers and transportation staff who ensure our students arrive to and from school safely — rain or shine. Our  music programs  are also shining this month. The  Creswell Middle School Choir  performed at their annual Fall Concert this week, and the  Creswell High School Band  will host their concert next week. These performances are a wonderful reflection of the dedication and talent of our student musicians and directors. Thank you for continuing to support our students and staff in all the ways you do. Warm Regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District Intro to Art at CHS Intro to Art Students are using charcoal to recreate and enlarge an image - in this case a mylar balloon. Honing their skills in blending, layering, and gridding, which aids artists in enhancing accuracy and preserving proportions. Students initially worked on their use with charcoal in a shading grid, then moved to scaling the image in a grid, and the final project is a larger scale with no grid. You can see a few of these variations in our photos.  Nice work, Bulldogs ! Cheers to Brandy for 33 years! A huge thank you to the many friends, family, and fans who came out to celebrate long-time coach Brandi Wittenborn last week. It was a special night honoring not only our CHS seniors, but also a dedicated coach with 33 years of leadership under her belt. CSD40 Update | September 26, 2025     Important Dates October 1 -  CES Socktober October 7-9  - Outdoor School for 6th Grade October 7 - Family Resource Fair, Creswell Community Center October 8 -  Walk & Roll to School Day October 10 - No School   Superintendent's Message   Dear CSD Staff and Families, As we settle into the rhythm of school schedules and activities, I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the energy that comes with the start of a new year. From learning classroom routines to joining in on spirit days and cheering at athletic events, it has been wonderful to see our schools filled with enthusiasm and community pride. We look forward to carrying this momentum throughout the year. At Creswell High School, student engagement is off to a strong start with the launch of  Student Interest Groups.  These groups, offered during the “WIN” (What I Need) period, give students the chance to explore areas of personal interest or receive additional academic support. Students and staff collaborated to create a diverse list of activities, and each student will select their top three preferences before being placed in a group for the semester. We’re excited about this opportunity to help students connect, grow, and thrive. Attendance is another key focus for us this year.  Every school day matters, and your child’s presence makes a meaningful difference. Consistent attendance builds confidence, supports academic growth, and is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success. In elementary school, strong attendance helps students develop foundational reading skills; in middle school, frequent absences can be an early warning sign of students being at risk of dropping out; and in high school, attendance is an even stronger predictor of graduation than test scores. Missing just two days a month adds up to being chronically absent—18 days in a year. We are committed to supporting your family in making every day count. September is also  Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.  This is a time to come together, raise awareness, and remind one another that no one is ever truly alone. Mental health challenges can affect anyone, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength. We encourage families to explore available resources, talk openly, and remind loved ones that support is always within reach. We are grateful for our outstanding school counselors who walk alongside students each day: Aaron Klein – CHS Counselor Jenny Collins – CMS Counselor Gina Catlin – Creslane Counselor As a district, we are committed to fostering a positive culture where every student feels supported and has the opportunity to succeed. Thank you for your continued partnership in making Creswell schools a place where students can thrive, succeed, and lead. Warm regards, Mike Johnson Superintendent Creswell School District First Assembly of 2025-26 for Creslane Students Our Creslane Mustangs held their first assembly of the school year today. We learned appropriate behavior during an assembly.  Ms. Martin talked about being Timely Taters  and the special ways that we as classes and a school can work towards positive attendance and attendance rewards. We helped Ms. Halley set a new goal this year: learning to play the guitar!  We met our student leaders, and got to enjoy a performance from the CMS Cheer team.  What a great first assembly!!  CMS FBLA Chapter Shout Out Recently, Creswell Middle School's FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Chapter was given a special shout out from the FBLA Organization. Accolades were given for the many achievements they have made over the past 3 years, and they were also congratulated for inspiring this year's National Theme: "Make Your Mark." We are extremely proud of our CMS Tigers and staff for creating and continuing such a stand out program! Way to go! Marketing Class Connects Students with Real World Experience The CHS Marketing class, with just a handful of days worth of instruction, have begun working with their first client of the 2025-26 school year. Audrey Sizemore, owner of Humble Bumble Nutritionals, initially reached out to the CHS Marketing class for apparel assistance that then transformed into an entire branding campaign. Today our students presented assets and information to assist Audrey with everything she will need for her upcoming grand opening in October.  We love seeing these amazing local business partnerships with our CTE students! Go, Dawgs! CHS Education 100 Students Begin Classroom Practicum Creswell High School’s Education 100 CTE class is preparing for an exciting hands-on learning experience at Creslane Elementary. Beginning next week, CHS students will spend Tuesdays and Thursdays working in Creslane classrooms alongside staff and students. To get ready, the class met with Creslane Principal, Amy Halley, to discuss key topics such as establishing classroom expectations, understanding FERPA laws and best practices, maintaining professionalism, and approaches to positive behavior redirection. This practicum is a valuable opportunity for CHS students to explore education as a career path while contributing to our school community. Starting Off League Play with a W! The Creswell Boys Soccer team is starting their official league play strong with a win over Siuslaw 6-2 earlier this week. The team hosts their next home game against Sisters on September 30th at 6pm. Besting the Billies Never Felt so Good Our Girls Soccer Team in six league games already this season - starting quick and remaining strong! Recently this week the Dawgs hosted the Pleasant Hill Billies for one heck of a game - besting those Billies 1-0! Nice work, ladies! The team will host their next home game against La Pine on October 2nd at 6pm. Staying the Course, Building Momentum The Bulldogs bit back last week in one of several anticipated games this season, playing 4A program, Cottage Grove, at home. Last year, our nearby neighbors were a force at the 3A level, making it into playoffs. This year, Creswell entered the week with something to prove, coming off two weeks worth of losses. The young Creswell team stayed the course, leaning heavily into a strong running game that paid dividends to reach a final score of 21-13 over the Lions.  The Bulldogs play Willamina in their final non-league game September 26th, then host Sisters for their first league game on the home turf October 3rd. Games start at 7pm. Volleyball Keeps Pushing in League Play The Lady Bulldogs are ferocious fighters, and have been working hard on the court. So far, during league play, the Bulldogs have come up short for the win, but there is a lot more season left to play. Volleyball hosts their next home game against Elmira on October 2nd starting at 6:30pm. Sideline Spirit with Creswell HS Cheer Fall sports season wouldn't be complete without some extra enthusiasm on the sidelines, and the CHS cheer team is bringing it in spades! This veteran program is donning a new look this season, complete with all the sparkle that we come to expect from this spirited group. While the cheer program does not begin their competitive season until the Winter sport season, CHS has two members preparing for the OCCA All-State Competition to be held October 18th. All-State is a highly competitive state-wide competition for talented individuals and stunt groups to compete for talent scholarships. In order to compete as an individual at All-State, cheerleaders must learn and perform special choreography and individual skill sets in tumbling and jumps. There are two rounds to the competition, with a video qualifying round, then finals will be held in person on October 18th at South Albany High School. Taylor Dennis (Senior) and Savannah Johnson (Sophomore) will be representing Creswell in the 1A/2A/3A division. Wish them luck as they prepare for this competition! Support the CHS Class of 2026 - Get your Car Washed! Come down to Point S Creswell and get your car washed to help support the Creswell High School Class of 2026 Grad Party! Sunday, September 28th 11am-3pm Donation Only Big Dog Golf Tournament - October 4th! Creswell High School Booster Club is excited to be gearing up for our annual Big Dog Golf Tournament! The tournament will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 9am at Middlefield Golf Course in Cottage Grove. The Booster Club helps to support students by purchasing needed equipment and supplies for CHS athletic teams. Additionally, the Boosters supplies two $1,000 scholarships annually to college-bound student-athletes. You can help with (donations are tax deductible): Being a Sponsor Donation of Goods or Services Sign up as a Team to play View our flyer attached to this newsletter for more details! Big news from Bulldog Country!   Until recently, no one was sure if our Bulldog mascot even had a name… so CHS students stepped up to make it official! After voting from several options, the winning name was revealed under the Friday night lights at our Home Football Game vs. Cottage Grove. Please join us in giving a warm welcome to “Duke” the Bulldog   — the proud face of Creswell High School spirit! You can catch Duke again TONIGHT at the CHS Home Football Game, starting at 7pm versus Willamina. Familiar Face Joins the CMS Team Meet CMS' new Attendance and Athletic Secretary: Angela Dennis! This familiar face has been a long-standing member of Creswell High School heading up the library and running the College & Career Center for CHS students. While CHS will certainly missing her there, Creswell Middle School is thrilled to have this experienced staff member join their team. Attendance Matters! Every day in school helps your child learn, grow, and succeed. When students show up regularly, they build confidence, stay on track, and are more likely to graduate. Why it matters: In elementary school, regular attendance builds strong reading skills. By middle school, absences can signal risk of dropping out. In high school, attendance is one of the best predictors of graduation. Did you know? Missing just 2 days a month —excused or not—adds up to being chronically absent (18 days in a school year). Your child’s presence makes a difference! If your family faces challenges with attendance, please reach out—we’re here to help. Suicide Prevention Awareness - Student & Family Resources September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to come together to support one another and shine a light on an important issue. Mental health challenges can affect anyone, and reaching out for help is a sign of strength. We encourage families to explore the resources on this page, talk openly, and remind loved ones that they are never alone. Together, we can foster hope, healing, and connection. We also offer additional resources, including more local supports, that can be found on this page on our website: Youth Resources Creswell Family Resource Fair Join the Creswell Family resource Center and Creswell School District for an evening of connection with local organizations who support families with children 0-18 years. Should CSD encounter an actual emergency, ParentSquare will be one of the key and critical ways that we communicate with families. During the test, families should have received an emergency notice. This test bypasses notification settings and will alert families through text message, the ParentSquare app, email, and in some cases, an automated phone call. If you received the emergency test notice, no further action is needed. If you missed this test notice, please contact your school office as soon as possible to get your contact information updated.
