Weekend Update from Centerville Schools - Feb. 7, 2025
Weekly News February 7, 2025 Please keep your child home if they are sick! We are seeing an increase in illnesses in our schools. Although every day of school is important, to help prevent the spread of illness in our schools, we do ask that you keep your child home if they have any symptoms of flu, COVID-19, or another illness, or if they are awaiting test results for any communicable illness. Students must be fever, vomit, and diarrhea free for 24 hours without the aid of medication before they return to school. Looking ahead Here is some important information for next week and beyond. YouScience helps students plan for the future February is Career and Technical Education Month, making it great time to share how Centerville High School is using a tool called YouScience to help students with planning for their high school courses, college and careers, and their overall well-being. 💻 Students use YouScience's strengths-based assessment to identify their aptitudes and interests. The tool provides insights into career matches and tips for success, empowering families to make informed decisions about education pathways. CHS students can access their YouScience data by logging in through the Clever portal. 🔎 YouScience also shows where a student's aptitudes (their natural abilities) and interests don't match, which is often caused by a lack of exposure to certain career fields. By exploring these areas, students can discover new opportunities and think about different career goals. These insights can also help CHS refine and expand programs to better align with student strengths and community needs. 🆓 Centerville Schools can use YouScience for free, thanks to a partnership with the Montgomery County Educational Service Center. By targeting student skills and interests, the ESC can send messages to families about career fairs, internships, and other resources to help meet future workforce needs in the greater Dayton area. Weekly News January 17, 2025 Looking ahead Here is some important information for next week and beyond. Superintendent to host Elks Connect event next week Centerville-Washington Township residents will have an opportunity to learn more about their local public schools during three events over the coming months. The initiative, called “Elks Connect: Black & Gold Conversations for a Stronger School Community,” was started by Superintendent Jon Wesney last summer as an informal way to strengthen ties between the school district and the broader community. Each event will feature a brief tour of the school and will have a topic to help facilitate discussion. Please join us for next week's event: 📆 Wednesday, Jan. 22 🕣 6:30 p.m. 📍 Cline Elementary Library (use entrance closest to Virginia Avenue) ❓ Topic: What's Next? > Learn more about all three events Unravel the mystery at Magsig Middle School's upcoming play! Get ready for a night of intrigue, laughter, and youthful genius as Magsig Middle School proudly presents Young Sherlock! 📆 Jan. 22-23 🕖 7 p.m. 📍 Magsig Auditorium 🎟 Tickets are $5 (cash and Venmo accepted) Join us for an unforgettable journey into the world of a young detective who’s as clever as he is charming. With wit sharper than a magnifying glass, our talented cast will take you on a thrilling adventure filled with twists and turns! Library hosts student art show Check out the work of Centerville High School artists at Woodbourne Library through Feb. 17! "Investigations: Finding Questions and Answers through Artmaking" features work by students in Mrs. Armstrong's Advanced Placement Studio Art class. They have created artwork built around a central question or idea -- perspective which may be illusion or forced -- comparing the past to the present. > Learn more about the exhibit Volunteer opportunities available January is a great time to try something new! If you've been looking for a way to give back to your community or be more involved at your child's school, our Academic Volunteer Program has several opportunities available. Check out our biggest needs listed here, and when you're ready, visit our website to learn more and sign up. This program is open to parents and other caring adults, so please share with friends and family that would be a good fit. Thank you for supporting our students! PVN (grades K-1): Volunteers will be trained to help students with handwriting/fine motor skills. Sessions are 30-45 minutes, once a week, for 6 weeks. Cline Elementary: Volunteers will give a prepared presentation on an artist to an elementary class followed by a short art project through our Masterworks program. All materials are provided and the timing is flexible. Volunteers present one 1-hour presentation a month, January-April. Magsig & Tower Heights Middle Schools: Volunteers will work one-on-one or with a small group of students during their noon hour study hall (approx. 12-1:20 p.m.). Rather than needing an expert on a subject, these students often need a caring adult to help them with time management, organization, and motivation. Centerville High School: Volunteers will work one-on-one with a student during their study hall on a specific subject. We are especially in need of tutors for higher level math, chemistry, and biology. In review Here are some stories you may have missed this week. One day one of the boys was not having a great day, and she was able to cheer him up on the way home from school. She takes her time to get to know all the students on the bus. Also, she waits for my son to get on the bus; he has a disability and walks slower than other kids, but she waits for him to get on the bus. One of my sons always gives her a hug at the end of the day. Thank you for being so great with little ones, Ms. Becky!" - Lindsay, Centerville parent Thank you, Ms. Fries, for going above and beyond to empower, challenge, and support our students! #ElkSpotlight nomination form See all district news Mark your calendar for these upcoming district events!
