Message from Texas Safety Center
Dear Parent or Guardian: Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The attached information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms. In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide. It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13 , a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence: Failed to secure the firearm; or Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two). Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax . Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com . Safe gun storage is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies. Sincerely, Stuart Smith, Director of Student Services stuart.smith@pampaisd.net 806-669-4700

Harvester Nation News
HARVESTER NATION NEWS HARVESTER NATION NEWS Open this email in a browser HUGH'S NEWS Harvesters, Our 2023-2024 school year is off and running! It was so fun kicking off the school year with Convocation, Back to School Bash, and Meet the Harvesters! Dustin Miller was our guest speaker at our staff Convocation and he spoke about the positive attributes of a Harvester. His lessons were spot on with our Show Up, Work Hard, and Serve Others motto. We will utilize this motto to teach our students what is means to be a Harvester. Words and ideas like grit, determination, tenacity, work-ethic, servant leadership, kind, positive outlook, and good steward will be the basis of lessons that will help our students become better citizens. The Back to School Bash was fantastic! We had a huge crowd, the shade trees came in handy for sure, there were more booths than ever, the helicopter was a hit, the firefighters drew a big crowd, the food and drink trucks had lines from start to past finishing time, and the dunking booth was fun too! A big shout out goes to Jana Williamson and her team for knocking it out of the park at this year’s Bash! Our student participation appears to be high in almost all our activities represented at Meet the Harvesters. There was a large crowd and plenty of smiles to get our year off to a great start. This year promises to be very memorable. Not only have we successfully transitioned to our grade level elementary schools, we are in the design process for our new Travis elementary school and Career and Technology facility at Pampa High. This process will continue through the spring with the hope of breaking ground on both facilities by the end of the school year. Our facilities are safer than ever with the addition of updated cameras, vibration and vape sensors, a silent panic alert system, and safety film that will be installed on all glass at entrances to our campuses. We have many successes to start our new year. One of our own, Zach Thomas, class of 1992, was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame! A Pampa Harvester jersey is proudly displayed in Canton, OH and Pampa is one of only 28 high schools in Texas to have a Hall of Fame member. An outstanding accomplishment for sure! Pampa ISD received an award from Region 16 for a Best Practice regarding our literacy program and the change that we had to make to get there. Here is the video for the award that R16 made for us. Pampa ISD Literacy . Our AP Spanish program achieved yet another milestone. Not only did their scores surpass the state and global averages, they did so on 100% of the 35 subcategories! If you are new to Pampa or if you have been a Harvester forever, thank you for choosing us and entrusting us with your child(ren). It is our honor to Show Up, Work Hard, and Serve you and our students. It takes a village to impact the lives of kids and Pampa is an outstanding village. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions, concerns, praises, or ideas on how we can better serve our students. Thanks for being a Harvester! Hugh Piatt II Superintendent 2023-2024 Pampa ISD Staff The 2023-2024 Pampa ISD faculty are ready to show up, work hard, and serve others. We are ALL now Harvesters and ready to model the Harvester spirit. Pampa ISD custodians and the maintenance crew worked hard at the 2023 Bash. Our transportation department has worked very hard to provide transportation for over 300 elementary students. Staff on all campuses are working to make drop-off and pick-up safe and efficient for our families and students. Student Health Advisory Council(SHAC)
Are you interested in serving on the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)? If so, please complete the SHAC Member application below.
