Information to Assist Families During VTA Transporta...
Dear MVLA Families, We recognize that the ongoing VTA public transportation strike is presenting challenges for students who rely on public transit to get to school. While this situation is beyond the control of MVLAHSD, we want to assure you that we are committed to supporting affected students during this time. To assist students impacted by the strike: Teachers will excuse tardies, related to transportation delays. Students will have the opportunity to make up any missed work due to transportation challenges. Families are encouraged to explore carpooling options to assist those in need of transportation. The Mountain View Community Shuttle may be a helpful alternative for some students. The District is currently assessing the impact of the VTA strike. If your child is experiencing transportation challenges getting to or from school due to the strike, please let us know by filling out this information form. We appreciate your patience and the community’s support as we navigate this situation together.

She shared opportunities for students and the public to participate on the committee. The AACI is hosting a competition for student submissions in digital and visual arts or essays on Growing Up in America. Trustee Levich attended the Family Partnership Council meeting in February, which provided another opportunity for public input on the Trustee Area Maps as well and an interactive experience with MVLA's Instructional Support Team that led a workshop on the district's instructional model called Constructing Meaning. Trustee Vonnegut attended the Challenge Team meeting and shared that MVHS' Peer Tutoring program* was presented. She also attended the Family Partnership Council. She, President Ortiz, and Superintendent Volta attended a meeting with two Los Altos City Council members to discuss parking near LAHS. (Editorial note: It was the MVHS Principal's Tech Internship Team that presented at the February Challenge Team Meeting). STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORTS Los Altos High School After a well-deserved break, LAHS dived right back in! ASB held the beloved annual Valentine's Day Faire in the gym at lunch. This gave clubs the perfect opportunity to fundraise, raise awareness and build community. Sustainability was a focus this year - LAHS’s Green Team and their parent volunteers helped eliminate waste through implementing designated recycling bins. Winter sports wrapped up just before break, with memorable senior nights and the winter athletes awards night, which is happening now, to finish off the season. Spring sports are officially underway! Softball is kicking off the season strong with a tournament this past weekend, while the MVLA Gymnastics team has been hard at work, conditioning for the past month. On campus, changes are happening as well. With the cafeteria undergoing a remodel, the lunch line has temporarily moved from inside to the area between the cafeteria and tutorial center. This week, each class has its monthly class council meeting, where they will be planning for the upcoming Clash of the Classes week in April. This week is Writers' Week, meaning English classes are visited by journalists and authors to talk about their career. Notably, this Thursday evening, the esteemed author, Dave Eggers, will be on campus to talk about his work and career. There are a variety of events for the community to participate in as well. (Written by Arathi Naga, Student Board Rep, LAHS; edited.) Mountain View High School Coming back from break, all of MVHS is enjoying the good weather and ready to finish the rest of the year. One highlight before break was Valentine’s Day, with the entire campus being full of song. The MVHS choir has been working tirelessly, preparing many different songs to serenade the students at MVHS. Classes would be stopped so that singing Valentines could be delivered to the students, with every single card being accompanied by a new song. Starting the month of March, MVHS students have a lot to look forward to. At the end of the month, ASB will host their Spartans Madness. Sixteen different teams of five composed of different groups from all across campus will compete in 5v5 basketball for two weeks. Another highlight of March is the Life Skills Saint Patrick’s Dance that they host every year. Different student groups are invited, as well as Life Skills students from schools across the Bay. Having gone every year, it’s always a fun time and brings the student body together. Sports have been taking the spotlight these past couple weeks, with both of our Boys' Soccer making it to CCS semifinals, and Boys' Basketball to CCS playoffs. February 2025 Family Partnership Council Meeting Recap
FEBRUARY 2025 MVLA Instructional Support Team Presentation of Constructing Meaning The Family Partnership Council has been discussing a variety of issues that they consider to be of importance to the ongoing growth and success of MVLA. Previous meetings have included a budgeting overview and transparency and district alignment of grading, curriculum and instruction. At our February meeting, the council was fortunate to do some experiential learning with Tim Farrell and Taica Hsu from the MVLA Instructional Support Team (IST) as they took members through an overview of the instructional approach that all staff at MVLA have been engaged in learning and implementing over the past two years. Council members were provided an opportunity to do some constructivist learning of their own mathematical reasoning with a quadratic formula challenge. The intent of this learning experience was to give the members a taste of what students are doing in classrooms across the campuses and to learn more about the pedagogical approach that leads to deeper understanding, stronger expression of that understanding, and greater inclusion for students' diverse learning profiles. Trustee Boundary Map Areas Presentation As part of the required process for providing opportunities for the community to give input prior to the adoption of new Trustee Areas for Board of Trustee Elections, the Family Partnership Council viewed and provided input to Superintendent Volta on the maps being considered. After two weeks of students choreographing and practicing, each class decked out in their class colors and performed in front of the school. Our admin team acted as judges and came to a final verdict: While each class was impressive, the winner for this year’s dance battle is the class of 2026, for the second year in the row! After an incredibly successful rally, the week continued with dress up days and lunch activities. Two of the days, we held a short Girl's Flag Football tournament, ending with the junior girls taking the win! Finally, to finish off the week, our winter dance, Neon Nights was held in the auxiliary gym. Tons of snacks, decorations, neon face paint and temporary tattoos made the evening very memorable. With more than thirty clubs signed up to sell food, crafts, and flowers, it’s something the campus is looking forward to. Many students thoroughly enjoyed the Cultural Snacks Day, where MVHS clubs handed out different cultural foods for students to try. We ended the week with the fashion show, where various student models showcased their culture through fashion. The next day, we had our Winter Ball, which was hosted at the Glass House in San Jose. This is our only venue-based dance available to underclassmen, which was exemplified by our majority underclassmen attendance. We approach Valentine’s Day this Friday, and are looking forward to our yearly tradition of Singing Valentines. MVHS choir has been hard at work, selling cards to students who can order a group to come sing to anyone they choose. Finally, we start ASB elections this week. Anyone running for a position has until Wednesday to campaign, as voting will start on Thursday and results will be published on Friday. One notable feature is the KONA ice truck that will be giving out free snow cones to the first 200 students that come! Leading up to the dance, the Dance Battle Rally is a week from today! Every day during lunch, the football field has been busy with music, students, and dancing as every class rehearses to win class points. Last Friday, one of our theatre clubs on campus, Blue Broadway, executed a fully student-planned and performed production of Xanadu. This is their second production and it was a hit! Finally, Class Council and ASB position campaigning starts next week and voting is two weeks from now. Overall, our campus is looking forward to a busy three weeks before break! (Written by Arathi Naga, Student Board Rep, LAHS; edited.) Mountain View High School MVHS had many exciting events to get ready for this new semester and year. Parents were able to learn about elective courses, get a tour of our campus, and learn about other MVHS programs. Overall, it’s been a great first month at MVHS and we look forward to the rest of the year. (Written by Christophe Bouteille, Student Board Rep, MVHS; edited.) Family Partnership Council - November Meeting Recap
November 2024 The November Family Partnership Council was held in the beautiful Student Union at Los Altos High School with yummy eats provided by the LAHS Culinary Arts II student s ! The focus for the evening included a deeper dive into two of the topics that the council suggested at the first meeting: budget transparency and alignment throughout the district. (click slide above to see full presentation of slides) The first part of the evening was a presentation from Associate Superintendent Mike Matheisen who shared the ways the MVLAHSD budget is developed, monitored, and shared with the public - specifically the ways in which the budget process has multiple opportunities for oversight through the board governance, county office of education, and the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). The latter half of the meeting included a lively discussion where members of the council were asked to elaborate on areas of growth around "alignment" in the district. "Alignment" can have many definitions within the educational context but typically it means to ensure consistency and coherence across various elements of the educational experience. Some of the areas for growth that were identified included: While recognizing the style and culture of teachers' classrooms should have room for individuality, students taking like courses should have the same grading, curricular and homework expectations. Concerns were expressed specifically about balancing the use of individual projects/work and group projects in like courses as well as retake and testing policies that are different for the same courses . Proficiency levels for students should be measured against the course outcomes , especially for sequenced courses, so that all students leave a course having met standards for proficiency . Alignment of milestone experiences - i.e., Challenge Day. for entire classes - experiences that are shared across a school to unify and build empathy. A culture of support for all students by all teachers - recognizing that students need supportive environments for learning and accountability with a gradual release of responsibility. Alignment to state standards for all students in Special Education , including students in the Adult Transition Program need access to these standards. Inclusion goals at 55% in the LCAP and the state goal is 68-70%. 2024-2025 MEETING INFORMATION December 11, 2024 Zoom February 12, 2025 Mountain View High School - Dining Commons March 12, 2025 Zoom April 16, 2025 Zoom May 14, 2025 Alta Vista High School
