2023/2024 SATURDAY SCHOOL DATES:
Dear Parent/Guardian of SKUSD K-12 students, The first Saturday School session of the 2023/2024 school year will be October 7th! If your child's attendance history indicates that he/she has been absent for at least one complete day , they are invited to attend the session on Saturday, October 7th, 2023. Attending ONE session, will eliminate ONE full day’s absence. ARP does NOT remove tardies . Login to you Aeries Parent Portal to verify if your student has any full day absences. Please note, Covid 19 related absences do not count against your student’s attendance and therefore these do not need to be recovered. This invitation to attend ARP should be considered an opportunity to receive extended educational support and enrichment. When attending an ARP session, your student will receive instruction from SKUSD staff who will address California standards necessary for your student's academic success. WHEN ATTENDING ARP, STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE ON TIME AT THEIR SCHOOL SITE AND BE READY TO BEGIN INSTRUCTION AT 8:00AM. THE SESSION ENDS AT 12:00PM. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO COOPERATE AND FOLLOW REGULAR SCHOOL RULES INCLUDING THE DRESS CODE. BREAKFAST IS AVAILABLE TO ALL STUDENTS AT NO COST. If you would like your student to attend, please turn in the attached ARP form to the student's school site office no later than Wednesday, October 4th, 2023. Forms are also available at the Ed Services Office #4 in the District and at your student’s school site office. We thank you for your continued support and cooperation in making your student's education a priority! For further questions, please direct them to your school's office. To SKUSD Families, Out of a concern for the safety of students and staff, SKUSD will be closed tomorrow, August 21st. We anticipate reopening school on Tuesday, August 22nd. We will file with the California Department of Education for a waiver for tomorrow’s closure. We may need to make up this day later in the year if we are not issued that waiver. Please stay home and stay safe. We look forward to seeing your children at school on Tuesday. Sincerely, The SKUSD Administration

Hello SKUSD Families, Staff, and Rosamond Community Members, I would like to take a moment to discuss a sensitive subject with you, illegal drug use. Unfortunately, this is a serious problem that has impacted our students and community heavily, especially as we have returned to campus after Covid 19. The DEA, (Drug Enforcement Agency), has also warned that across the United States we are seeing an increased risk of fentanyl poisoning in the student population. There is also a rise in vaping and marijuana use. Are you aware of all the ways to hide marijuana? Would you think to check your child’s pens, Coca-Cola cans, or hair brushes? Do you know what signs to look for when identifying drug abuse? Are you aware of the Emoji combinations that are used to depict each drug or drug combination? These are all questions that we want you to be able to answer. Southern Kern Unified School District would like to invite you to a community presentation on Vaping and Marijuana . Hosted by : SKUSD Parent & Community Center Presented by: Al Hradecky of Impact Canine Solutions When : Tuesday, August 15th @ 6:00 PM Where : Rosamond High School Early College Campus - Gym Childcare for this event will be provided in the Rosamond High School Early College Campus Library. There are a variety of sources tracking the use and effects of marijuana across the United States. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has a warning on their website stating, “Research suggests that marijuana use is likely to precede use of other licit and illicit substances”. According to the CDC’s website, (Centers for Disease Control), “Marijuana use directly affects the brain, specifically the parts of the brain responsible for memory, learning, attention, decision-making, coordination, emotion, and reaction time. Infants, children, and teens (who still have developing brains) are especially susceptible to the adverse effects of marijuana”. Also, “Long-term or frequent marijuana use has been linked to increased risk of psychosis or schizophrenia in some users”. Please join us! We look forward to seeing you on August 15th. Sincerely, Fallon Mitchell SKUSD Grant Coordinator - CCSPP (661) 256-5000 Ext. 1115
