Monday Minute- September 22, 2025
Monday Minute September 22, 2025 Federal Impact Aid and What it Means for MLSD Last week, our school district was in Washington, D.C., sharing our story and advocating for our students. School board members Wendy Williams-Gilbert and Ron Cooper, along with Military Family Advocate Rey Ornelas, attended the annual National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS) conference and "Day on the Hill" to seek continued support for Impact Aid. Impact Aid is a vital federal program that provides funding to school districts, like ours, that educate a large number of students from military families. This funding is crucial because our district cannot collect local property taxes from federal property, such as Fairchild Air Force Base. Essentially, this federal money helps us maintain high-quality programs for all our students without putting an extra burden on our local taxpayers. Our district leaders shared several key examples of how this funding benefits our community and students: Lowering Local Tax Burden: Impact Aid represents 8.5% of our annual budget, totaling $2.7 million. This critical funding directly supports our schools and helps offset costs that would otherwise need to be covered by local taxes. Supporting All Students, Including Those with Special Needs: Impact Aid provides additional funding to meet the needs of students with disabilities. It helps us provide specialized support, such as hiring a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to guide our staff in addressing and instructing students with behavioral issues. Providing Mental Health Support: At any given time, up to 20% of Fairchild's service members may be deployed, leaving many children in our schools whose parents are away from home serving our country. Impact Aid allows us to address their academic and emotional needs. Through a unique partnership with local universities, we have over 15 mental health interns and a full-time mental health coordinator serving students, staff, and families in each of our school buildings. Expanding Access to High-Quality Preschool: This school year, our district used Impact Aid funds, combined with other state and federal resources, to launch full-day inclusive preschool and transitional kindergarten programs. We are now able to serve approximately 100 three- and four-year-olds. This is especially important as childcare on the West Plains has been so difficult for families to access. To that end, we already have a waitlist of over 20 children seeking early learning services. We want to thank our community for your continued support of our schools and our military families. Our district representatives in Washington, D.C., urged legislators to fully fund Impact Aid for the 2026 fiscal year, a goal that will ensure we can continue to provide exceptional programs and services to Every Student, Every Day. Students Shine at the County Fair Two weeks ago, several Medical Lake School District students proudly represented our community at the Spokane Interstate Fair. We want to celebrate Eily and Ember Fitzner, as well as Bella Giles, Lilly Kelm, and Kolbie and Kade Smalls, who successfully raised and took their animals to market. We love how our kids shine in so many ways! MLSD is Hiring Drivers! Join Our Transportation Team! The Medical Lake School District is now hiring bus drivers.
