This final Monday Minute of the school year highlights celebrations, accomplishments, and important end-of-year information as we head into summer break. Congratulations to the Medical Lake High School Class of 2026! On Friday, June 12, our seniors crossed the stage and officially became graduates, marking the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance, and growth. Their final week was filled with celebrations, traditions, and memorable moments shared with classmates, staff, family members, and friends. As they close this chapter and begin new adventures, we are proud of all they have accomplished and excited for all that lies ahead. Congratulations, Class of 2026! As we wrap up another successful school year, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation and warmest congratulations to the dedicated staff members who are retiring. Throughout their careers, they have made a lasting difference in the lives of students, colleagues, and families while helping bring the Medical Lake Promise to life every day. Their commitment, expertise, and care have strengthened our schools and enriched our community in countless ways. The legacy they leave behind will continue to inspire future generations of learners and educators. Please join us in recognizing and celebrating these exceptional individuals and their years of service: Freida Cook, Teacher - 35 years of service Sam Peterson, Teacher - 35 years of service Matt Houn, Teacher - 32 years of service Jamie Myers, Teacher - 32 years of service Glen Yamane, Teacher - 31 years of service Darlene Starr, Principal - 21 years of service Dave Devore, Transportation Foreman - 23 years of service Curtis Caraway, Transportation - 11 years of service We thank them for their many contributions and wish them happiness, fulfillment, and new adventures in retirement.   Memories Made at Camp Reed The fourth-grade students from Mrs. McLaughlin's, Mrs. Petersen's, and Mrs. Hiam's classes enjoyed an unforgettable outdoor education experience at Camp Reed on May 28-29, 2026. For many students, this was their first time spending a night away from home, and they rose to the challenge with confidence and enthusiasm. The overnight experience felt like one big slumber party, filled with laughter, friendship, and opportunities for students to develop independence. Some students experienced hiking or camping for the very first time, while others discovered new strengths as they stepped outside their comfort zones. One of the most valuable aspects of Camp Reed was the opportunity to build meaningful connections. Students, teachers, chaperones, and camp staff shared meals, conversations, and activities that strengthened relationships beyond the classroom walls. Seeing teachers in a different setting helped foster trust and deeper bonds, while many students thrived in the outdoor environment. Students who sometimes struggle with classroom regulation often find success through hands-on experiences in nature. The camp experience also encouraged family connections, as students may have the opportunity to return for future activities with a parent or guardian. Camp Reed was filled with memorable moments, including creative skits and performances, campfire songs led by our music teacher, and an exciting thunderstorm that became a real-world example of concepts students have learned through their science curriculum. From exploring nature to gaining confidence and creating lasting memories, the fourth-grade camp experience was a tremendous success and an important milestone in our students' growth.   Breaking Barriers Hall of Fame Michael Anderson 5th Grade students wrapped up their year in Wit & Wisdom with a "Breaking Barriers" Hall of Fame. In preparation for this event, they researched an athlete throughout history who broke a gender/racial/religious/cultural/ability barrier to impact the world. They created a display board and note cards to spend this past Friday in marathon-fashion by speaking to all grade levels. They tailored their dialogue to match an audience varying from Kindergarten through 5th grade as they visited in 20-minute blocks throughout the day. Their families were their final audience, and a celebration and refreshments followed as they were honored for a year's worth of accomplishments.   PSE Education Support Professional of the Year Surprise and celebration filled the halls of Hallett Elementary this morning as staff and students gathered to recognize Annie Scott with a PSE award honoring outstanding commitment to education. This coveted recognition is awarded to a PSE-represented employee who exemplifies dedication to students, education, and their profession. Those who know Annie understand why she was selected for this honor. Her unwavering commitment to students, supportive spirit, and positive impact on the Hallett community make her truly deserving of this recognition. Congratulations, Annie, on this well-earned achievement!   Celebrating Creativity In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, students from Michael Anderson Elementary shared their artistic talents and personal perspectives on what it means to be an American through a special art contest. Their outstanding artwork was showcased in the STEAM Hangar during SkyFest 2026, where an estimated 47,000 visitors had the opportunity to view and enjoy their creations. Congratulations to our grade-level winners, who were recognized for their achievements and presented with special wing patches by 92nd Air Refueling Wing Commander Col. Chad Cisewski. We are proud of all the students who participated and shared their creativity with our community!    MLSD Curriculum Adoption Consideration Medical Lake School District is excited to share that our Curriculum Adoption Team is recommending Wayfinder, a K-12 Future-Ready Skills Curriculum, for consideration as part of our district's core instructional resources. Captured by teacher Keith Dunlop as he was leaving basketball practice, the photo serves as a colorful reminder of a memorable week and the close of another school year.   Hallett Vocalaires Performance On June 2, the Hallett Vocalaires performed for their final concert of the year. Monday Minute June 1, 2026 Welcome to this edition of the Monday Minute! As we head into another busy and exciting week across the district, we’re proud to share highlights, celebrations, and important updates from our students, staff, and schools. Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and commitment to making our schools a great place to learn and grow. We hope you enjoy this week’s stories and announcements!   The middle school esports team traveled to the Seattle area to compete in an esports invitational tournament on May 16. The tournament was held at the Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood, Washington. The team consisted of Wyatt Long, Wes Clark, Brian Schwarzer, and Mateo Perez. Wyatt and Wes competed against 32 other teams in Super Smash Bros. Both competitors showed great composure and sportsmanship as they competed in their 6 matches. After losing his first match, Wyatt battled back with four wins in a row. Wyatt finished in 7th place. Wes started strong and won his first 4 matches. He fought hard in the final matches and came away with a 3rd place finish.0 Brian and Mateo competed in Rocket League. After losing one match during the group stage, they went undefeated during the final stage of the tournament. To advance to the final match, they had to defeat last year’s state champions. They finished in 1st place and are the proud owners of the 1st place trophy. Great job to all the players! Special thanks and appreciation to Jaime and Dana Perez for traveling all that way to cheer for the players, take pictures, and help out the coaches at the event.    Welcome to Meriah Peplinski! We are so excited to announce Meriah Peplinski as the new Assistant Principal at Michael Anderson. She comes to us from the Cheney School District, where she is currently serving as an interim assistant principal. Prior to her current role, Meriah was a 3rd-grade teacher at Salnave Elementary School. Welcome to MLSD Meriah!   2026 PACE Award Honorees The PACE Awards provide an opportunity to recognize and celebrate students who consistently exemplify outstanding character. Each year, one student from each of our schools is selected for this honor. These students are recognized for their integrity, leadership, kindness, and commitment to making a positive impact on their classmates, school, and community. Through their actions, they bring the values of good character to life and serve as role models for others. We are proud to announce the 2026 PACE Award recipients: Jace Jackson from Michael Anderson Elementary, Aspen Starkenburg from Hallett Elementary, Kendall Dunlop from Medical Lake Middle School, and Ty Chatellier from Medical Lake High School. Congratulations to these outstanding students on this well-deserved recognition!   HS Band and Choir Senior Concert Our High School Choir and Band delivered unforgettable performances during Senior Night as we celebrated the seniors who have shared their talent, dedication, and passion with our music programs over the years. Congratulations, seniors!   District Choral Festival On May 20th, the Middle School hosted the District Choral Festival, bringing together student voices from across our district for an evening of music and collaboration. The festival featured performances by the Hallett Vocalaires, Michael Anderson Choralaires, Middle School Cougar Choir, and High School Windborne Choir. It was a wonderful celebration of the talent, dedication, and hard work of our students and music staff!   NEA Scholar Athlete Awards Every year, the NEA League recognizes one outstanding male and female senior from each high school in the league. The students are selected for their excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and character, and the honorees are celebrated at a special luncheon hosted by the league athletic directors. The 2026 recipients of the award from MLHS are Kaylee Dennler and Julian Taylor. Both have exemplified the traits of being a true Student-Athlete by the hard work, dedication and sacrifice that they have each given during the past four years of their high school careers. We are proud to recognize Kaylee and Julian for this prestigious award.     Student and Community Services Mental Health Awareness Month As we recognize May Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to give a huge shout out to all of our Wellness Team helpers and supporters. Mental health is everyone’s job, and we are so grateful for the caring adults who show up every day to support our students and families. A special thank you to our Mental Health Coordinator, Catherine Donnelly, our mental health interns, and our entire team for the compassion, dedication, and teamwork you bring to our schools and community. Monday Minute May 18, 2026 Congratulations to our Girls Varsity Fast Pitch Softball Team on winning the District Championship! Their hard work, determination, and teamwork throughout the season have truly paid off, and we are incredibly proud of their accomplishment. We also want to celebrate our Boys Varsity Soccer Team for capturing the District Championship title as well! The team is now headed to the State Tournament, and we wish them the best as they continue their outstanding season. This morning, Monday, May 18, Medical Lake High School proudly sent off our FFA, Golf, Tennis, and Boys Varsity Soccer participants as they head to their state tournaments and competitions. Best of luck to all of our students competing at state — we are proud of you and cheering you on every step of the way!   Lions Club Youth Appreciation Awards On May 14, we celebrated the 56th Annual Lions’ Youth Appreciation Awards, recognizing outstanding students from across the Medical Lake School District for their character, leadership, citizenship, and positive contributions to their schools and community. Since convening in January, the 24-member volunteer committee—comprising parents, educators, and local leaders—has conducted technical reviews, campus tours, and community outreach to shape the future of district schools. Progress and Priorities Led by Chair Eric Halme and Vice-Chair Megan Jennen, the task force is charged with creating a 25-year facility program. This plan must address urgent infrastructure needs, support modern learning, and manage projected enrollment while maximizing past community investments. Key milestones reached during the first four meetings include: Facility Analysis: Reviewing the 2024 State Study and Survey building scores. Financial Strategy: Consulting with experts on capital financing pathways in Washington. Direct Inspection: Touring campuses to witness firsthand the aging HVAC systems, roof conditions, and space limitations at Hallett Elementary and the High School. Community Voice To ensure the plan reflects local values, the CFTF launched a ThoughtExchange survey. Feedback from parents and staff regarding safety, ADA access, and athletic improvements is now being used to prioritize project lists. Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Headrick praised the group’s dedication: “These members bring lived experience and professional expertise. Their work ensures that our final recommendations reflect genuine community wisdom.” Next Steps The committee will spend the next two months refining priority lists and finalizing strategic financing plans. Thank you for the continued support, care, and commitment you show to our students and schools each day.   Driving Excellence: Transportation Team Earns State Recognition We’re proud to share that Medical Lake School District has once again been recognized for excellence in student transportation safety. The district recently received a Letter of Achievement from the Washington State Patrol and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction after meeting strict school bus inspection standards for the second year in a row. This recognition highlights the dedication and hard work of our transportation team in ensuring students travel safely to and from school and activities each day. Thank you to our incredible staff for prioritizing student safety at every turn!   We’re excited to announce the next Principal of Michael Anderson Elementary! After a thoughtful selection process, we are proud to share that Barry Warren, current Assistant Principal at Michael Anderson Elementary, has been selected as the next principal. Mr. Warren brings 21 years of experience in education and a deep commitment to our school community. His dedication to students, staff, and families has already made a meaningful impact at MAE, and we’re excited for his continued leadership in this new role. Here’s a message from Mr. Warren: “I am proud and excited to be stepping into the role of Principal here at Michael Anderson Elementary. After 21 years in education, I can say with total honesty that the Medical Lake School District—and MAE specifically—are the best district and school I have worked for. This isn't just a job for me, it’s where I want to be for years to come. Senior Sereena Dancel was recognized as the winner in the Leadership category, while junior Keilianna Ornelas earned top honors in Social Advocacy. In addition, the Medical Lake Boys Varsity Basketball Team was honored with the Sportsmanship Award in the Teen Group category. Sophomore Dylan Stoltz was also recognized as a nominee in the Personal Achievement category. Congratulations to these students and teams for representing Medical Lake with excellence, character, and pride!   Farm to School Success! On Friday, we kicked off our first Farm to School celebration with a delicious baked potato bar—and it was a hit! Our incredible Nutrition Services team went all out, dressing the part and transforming each cafeteria with fun farm-themed decorations. From the creative setup to the tasty toppings, it was a great way to bring fresh, local food and a little extra joy to our students’ day—and the kids absolutely loved it! It was great to see so many smiling faces and empty plates across our schools. A special thank you to our local farmers and community partners, as well as ESD 101, for helping make this experience possible. Submit your request here: https://eds.ospi.k12.wa.us/ChoiceTransferRequest   Students Shine at WA State Future Problem Solving Competition Two students, Alec Tran and Ben Dobbin, from Michael Anderson Elementary recently represented Medical Lake SD at the Washington State Future Problem Solving competition in Stanwood, WA at Warm Beach Camp. They participated in the MAGIC (Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Competition), collaborating with students from other schools to form a four-member team. The MAGIC competition follows the six-step Future Problem Solving process, with a unique twist: teams work through a streamlined version that includes identifying key challenges and developing eight problems and eight corresponding solutions. Alec’s team earned third place! In addition to their hard work during the competition, students enjoyed exploring the beautiful surroundings of western Washington, including a memorable hike to a nearby estuary. It was a valuable experience that combined academic challenge, teamwork, and outdoor exploration.     Farm to School Our very first Farm to School event is on May 1st. To launch the initiative, students will be offered a Baked Potato Bar with all the fixings for lunch. Local farms will be providing many of the ingredients! Hallett and Michael Anderson 4th and 5th-graders were treated to a Spokane Indians game on Tuesday, April 14th, as part of the Spokane Indian's Education Days. We hope you have a safe, restful, and well-deserved break!   Purple Up Day! Purple Up Day is on Friday, April 17. Each school will join together, via Zoom from their respective gyms, to honor our military-connected students and their families with a special afternoon celebration. We invite all staff, families, and students to wear purple or red to show our appreciation!   A Winning Day at the Hawk Hustle Students and staff took to the course on Friday for the Hallett Hawk Hustle, racing around campus to raise funds for their school. Thanks to the PTO’s efforts and the enthusiasm of our Hawks, the event will support meaningful opportunities for students. It was a fantastic day filled with movement, school spirit, and teamwork!   Students Tackling Real-World Challenges: A Celebration of Innovation & Impact We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our talented students who competed at the Eastern Washington Regional Engineering & Science Fair! Elliott Pritchard & Oliver Pritchard earned the Citadel Securities Innovation Award (Middle School), mentored by Chad Powers. Even more exciting—they have been selected to advance to a national online competition this summer, with the opportunity to continue on to a National Science Fair! Owen Pritchard received the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, mentored by Paula Young, for his impressive research on environmental impacts and water quality. These students tackled complex, real-world issues related to water systems and environmental health, demonstrating creativity, critical thinking, and a commitment to scientific discovery. A huge thank you to their mentors for supporting and guiding this incredible work. Monday Minute March 23, 2026 Investing in Excellence: A Recap of Our Learning Improvement Day Last Friday, March 20, our schools were closed to students, but our buildings were buzzing with activity and professional learning. Staff members from all schools gathered at Michael Anderson Elementary in the morning and returned to their respective schools in the afternoon. Learning Improvement Days are a vital time for our educators to grow, collaborate, and find new ways to support your children. What Our Staff Accomplished Vertical Teaming: Educators met in grade-level and subject-specific groups to ensure talk about the alignment of learning from one grade level or course to the next. Supporting Student & Staff Well-being: Our Wellness Team and school counselors engaged in deep learning about secondary trauma to better understand how it affects those who experience or witness it. Military Community Connection: Staff members join the Operations Officer for the 92nd Force Support Squadron to gain firsthand insight into the unique experiences of our military-connected families. They walked-through an aircraft hangar and learned about the pre-deployment process, where military members prepare for deployment. Understanding the realities of deployment allows us to be a stronger support system for our students when a parent is away. Building District Pride: In our #Proud2bMLSD session, staff brainstormed ways to strengthen our district culture, ensuring that every student and staff member feels a deep sense of belonging and pride in being part of the Medical Lake family - from preschool until walk across the graduation stage! What Our Staff Shared - What was your most valuable takeaway from LID? “It was incredibly impactful to be guided by a member of the Air Force who shared his perspective on working with military families. Gaining insight into the unique challenges Air Force kids face—and the types of support that help them thrive—was both eye opening and meaningful. I left feeling inspired, more informed, and excited to support military families and students…” “It was so impactful to have quality time with our teams across the district. Building relationships between us makes us better educators as we have more people to lean on. This, in turn, benefits our students, which is the ultimate goal.” “I appreciated the opportunity to connect and have discussions with other teachers in my building and in this school district. In this role, she will support our new school psychologist interns through supervision, mentoring, and training. We are also excited to welcome Dr. Meg Holliday, who will be joining us as a part-time MHSP support provider while completing her practicum and internship with the district. Anderson, is not the first elementary school located on Fairchild Air Force Base. From 1953 until January 2004, Blair Elementary School proudly served students on base. Blair Elementary was named after William E. Blair, a Fairchild-based Air Force pilot who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 30, 1949. After experiencing trouble mid-flight while transporting seven servicemen home from training, Captain Blair ordered everyone to parachute to safety. He remained at the controls, guiding the aircraft away from populated areas before it crashed, saving the lives of all on board. He was immediately honored as a hero. The legacy of Blair Elementary still lives on at Michael Anderson. In the front entryway, you’ll find a collection of memorabilia celebrating Blair’s history. In the cafeteria, colorful tiles line the walls; each one uniquely decorated by Blair students in late 2003, just before they moved into the new building.
