Superintendent’s Report — August 25, 2026 Julie L. Hackett, Ed.D. NEWS YOU CAN USE Welcome Back It's going to be a great year, and we can’t wait to welcome you back! Summer has been a busy time for the Lexington Public Schools — our custodians have worked hard to get the buildings in top shape, and educators and leaders have been reading, learning, and planning for the year ahead. On September 1st, School Committee members and I will be visiting elementary schools across the district. Look for one of us at your school, ready to wave, say hello, and welcome students, staff, and families to another great year! We look forward to welcoming students back on the following days:    Date Group Notes September 1 K–5 Dismissal at 12:30 p.m. September 1 9th Graders September 2 Grades 6–8, 10–12 September 2 Kindergarten 12:30 p.m. dismissal September 8 PreKindergarten Bicycle Advisory Committee Did you know that Lexington has had over 100 reported e-bike accidents in the last few years? Thanks to proactive measures from the Bicycle Advisory Committee, middle school students will soon be educated on e-bike rules and how to stay safe. On July 21, 2026, we met with Bicycle Advisory Committee members Betty Gau and Jim Cadenhead of Battle Road Bikes, along with Sergeant Nicholas Dell'Anno of the Lexington Police Department, to discuss ways to be more proactive on this issue. Starting this fall, Jim and Sergeant Dell'Anno will lead e-bike safety education for middle school students, with the goal of keeping young riders safe and responsible on the road. School Health Services Vaccine Clinic Schedule The LPS Nursing Team is ready to support students' health and well-being throughout the year. Families are encouraged to reach out to their school nurse with any health questions or concerns. LPS will also offer vaccine clinics throughout the school year, open to Lexington residents, LPS students, staff, and their families. Whitsons Update The beginning of the school year is fast approaching, and our Whitsons School Nutrition team is ready and excited to provide nutritious, well-balanced meals to the Lexington School Community. Read the  Whitsons welcome-back newsletter . WHAT WE’RE LEARNING LPS Summer Work Intensive, 2026, and What It Means for Families Responsiveness is the word that sums up our summer work this year. Summer is an important time for our educational leaders to learn, grow, and connect, and this year, principals and district leaders spent three days in early August preparing for the year ahead and tackling the issues that matter most to families.   The first day focused on logistics and ensuring every school is ready to welcome students back, including how to foster a sense of belonging for every student and staff member, supervision and evaluation, updated state rules on seclusion and restraint, budget and staffing planning, and the new KidsBorough before-school program, which is currently accepting sign-ups at four sites:  Bowman, Estabrook, Harrington, and Hastings. The next two days were dedicated to five topics that families and the community have raised over the past few years. Administrators split into groups, researched best practices, and developed draft recommendations on:  elementary homework policy smoothing the transition from middle school standards-based grading to traditional high school grading; and  a proactive, districtwide approach to technology and AI use that involves families in shaping our policies and practices a more consistent way to survey school and department climate possible next steps for the high school science course sequence On August 25, principals and district leaders will present our work to the School Committee for further discussion. Families can expect more communication as each area of focus develops in the coming months. Think First: Partner with AI, Don't Outsource Your Thinking On August 18, 2026, we held our first Joint Council meeting of the year. AI policy expert Russ Wilcox joined to help our administrators think through how we can partner with AI in schools. Wilcox has advised the White House, the National Science Foundation, the Massachusetts Legislature, and local school districts on AI policy, and his work focuses on ensuring AI use in education strengthens critical thinking and student learning, grounded in research, equity, and developmentally appropriate practice. We learned that there are significant differences in how the East and West approach and regulate AI use in schools and looked at studies on the crossover between LLM use and brain activity. Groups that thought first and then used AI showed higher recall and reengaged neural connections compared to those who reached for AI immediately. One of the most interesting parts of the meeting was an exploration of generative ("ask-and-get") AI versus extraction AI. According to Wilcox: Most people have met exactly one kind of AI: the chatbot. Ask, get, paste. That mode is where the risk lives, because the thinking leaves with the question. But there's another mode almost nobody talks about — the one that reads student work rather than generating it. Given tasks like transcribing, extracting, structuring, and citing, it generates nothing; it reads. The entire conversation about AI in education shifts once you stop asking what AI can write for students and start asking what AI can read of theirs.  Administrators are currently writing individual critical reviews of the professional learning session Wilcox led pro bono. Their thoughts and ideas will help shape our next steps, which may include a  town hall meeting  on the topic as well as a  governance framework for AI use . This is the beginning of a larger conversation in the district, where we hope to engage a panel of experts to help us think through AI and technology use in our schools. HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECT UPDATES Construction Underway Construction officially began on July 6, 2026, and will continue on the existing Lexington High School campus over the next several years. The  project website  provides the Lexington community with updates on the project's schedule, budget, and construction impacts for students, families, and staff. You can also view ongoing  construction updates . DEP Walk-Thru A Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) walk-through of the construction site will take place on Thursday, August 27, from 10:30–11:30 a.m. on Worthen Road. The visit is in response to an appeal filed last month by a dozen residents regarding onsite wetlands. For more details, read the  article  along with the appeal itself — legally known as a Superseding Order, including the list of signatories —  available here . High School Groundbreaking Celebration Please join us for a community celebration marking this construction milestone on  September 15, 2026,   at 4:00 p.m.  at the practice field at 251 Waltham Street. A groundbreaking ceremony marks the formal, symbolic start of a construction project, typically involving officials or community members turning over the first shovelfuls of earth at the site. Beyond its ceremonial function, it serves as a public celebration that brings stakeholders together and signals to the community that physical work is officially underway.  WE ALL BELONG  20 under 20 Breakfast Reception Congratulations to the four Lexington High School 11th graders honored at the India New England "20 Under 20" breakfast reception on August 2, 2026: Rucha Daphal, Rajvir Kalra, Siddharth Evankar, and Aditi Wadhwa. All of the honorees deserve tremendous credit for their accomplishments, and I am incredibly proud of them all — with a special shoutout to our own Lexington students, whose talent and hard work continue to make our community proud.  Honorees are selected by an independent panel based on academic excellence and leadership; extracurricular involvement and athletics; entrepreneurial initiatives and business ideas; community service and volunteerism; and artistic talent in writing, music, and the arts, as well as achievement in science and technology. Organized by INDIA New England News, the program celebrates young achievers and amplifies their voices, encouraging them as they pursue their academic and professional futures.  India Independence Day Celebrations On Sunday, August 16, the Lexington community came together to celebrate India's rich heritage and its independence. I was honored to take part in the India Independence Day celebration, paying tribute to the IAL community's values of freedom and vibrant culture. Alongside several wonderful women and gentlemen of Lexington, I joined a runway event modeling Indian clothing from across history. Thank you to Priya Tanjore and Zuby Singh, part of the IAL Core Team, who generously spent many hours with me — shopping, rehearsing for the big event, keeping me fed, and patiently teaching me how to drape a saree and style the jewelry just right. Many thanks to Harbinder Chani of Billerica, who was incredibly generous with both the saree and jewelry and her time. A huge thank you to the two lovely ladies who styled my saree on the day of the event, Sheethal Kundoor and Bharathi Eswara, and a very special thank you to Jussie Singh, an LHS alum I'd love to claim as my own, for patiently teaching me how to walk the red carpet. It was a joyful day and one I'll treasure for years to come. The best part was making new friends and witnessing how this community shows up for one another on days like this. It is an honor and a privilege to serve Lexington. Dear Families of Diamond Middle School Students, I am reaching out to you to let you know  this week, the middle schools, along with the technology department, will be collecting your child’s 1:1 chromebook device for the summer.  Over the summer, our department repairs devices that may need some extra attention.  Device Collection Message for Diamond Diamond: Grades 6, 7 and 8: Devices and chargers collected on Thursday, 6/18/24 It is important that your child bring both their chromebook and their charger.  There is a charge of 11.99 if your child’s charger is lost.  If the charger is not returned, we will charge your MySchoolBucks account. Students in 8th grade moving to LHS will not get a new chromebook in 9th grade until they return their current device.  Any devices not returned prior to the end of the school year will be disabled and will be non operational over the summer.

Superintendent's Report  173 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA 02420 Tel: 781-861-2580 SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT FROM THE JUNE 9, 2026 SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING ℹ️ NEWS YOU CAN USE LPS Administrators’ Retreat, Summer 2026  — Each summer, our administrative team gathers for a retreat to collaborate and plan for the year ahead — a tradition in Lexington that spans many years. Retreats have been a topic of conversation in our community, so I wanted to share an update about where we’re going and the work ahead. Our administrators’ retreat is from August 3–5, 2026, with the first day covering back-to-school “nuts and bolts” at the Central Office. Days two and three, we will convene during the day at PITA Hall on Plum Island. The cost of the facility rental is $300 for both days, plus food and mileage. The opportunity to learn alongside colleagues, team-build, and plan together is critical to how we show up for students each fall. This year's agenda will take a look at topics we have heard about in our conversations with the community, including AI and technology use, homework practices, standards-based grading, the high school science sequence, and more. We believe this time together makes our team and our schools stronger, and we are always happy to share our experiences with the community. Kidsborough Before-School Program  — Kidsborough, the after-school program in Lexington, is entering its fourth year serving the community and is excited to pilot a morning program for the 2026–2027 school year. The program will provide families with greater flexibility for before-school care and offer students a mix of choice time and staff-led activities that support creativity, collaboration, and social development. Kidsborough looks forward to continuing to expand its support for Lexington families.  📎Learn more:   Flyer Staffing Update  — Of ~160 notices issued, only 11 staff remain unplaced for fall. Nearly all affected educators have secured assignments through retirements, resignations, and internal reassignments 📎Learn more:  L exObserver Enrollment FAQs  — As of October 2025, LPS enrollment stands at 6,524 — down for the third consecutive year and 734 below the FY19 peak, with declines across all grade spans. These trends mirror broader state and national patterns driven by lower birth rates, rising costs of living, and shifting family preferences. Private school enrollment ticked up during the pandemic and remains slightly elevated — a trend seen statewide and nationally, and more persistent in higher-income districts like Lexington, according to a   Boston University study . Notably, approximately 87% of Lexington school-aged children still attend a public school. Enrollment is one factor in budget and staffing decisions, but student needs, population composition, and rising operational costs all play a role. FY27 is trending toward the lower end of projections, and we have adjusted staffing accordingly.  📎Learn more:   Enrollment Data  &  Enrollment FAQs Open Table Food Pantry  — The  Fuel Up for Summer  program begins July 14, providing free, nutritious lunches and snacks for children throughout the summer. Thank you to Principal Baker, LHS administrators, and all staff who made the ceremony a success. Also, a huge congratulations to all of the LABBB staff and graduates on one of the most moving ceremonies ever. Most importantly, congratulations to all of our graduates!  Home Town Hero, Amari Mow — I am pleased to recognize Track and Field star Amari Mow for his sportsmanship, dedication, and can-do attitude.  But I’m not the only one who recognizes his many talents; he was recently featured on  Channel 10 , and in true Amari fashion, he credits the community for his success.   Special Olympics — On May 1, LHS proudly hosted the 20th annual Lexington Special Olympics Games, welcoming student-athletes from five communities for a day of inclusion and achievement. Festival of Colors — Happy Holi! I attended the Festival of Colors on Sunday, June 7, at Hastings Park. The event featured multicultural performances, music, food, and family activities, all celebrating the diversity and unity of our community. It was a colorful and joyful afternoon filled with fun and togetherness.  MASBO President's Award — Congratulations to Heidi Zimmerman for this well-deserved recognition of her leadership in school business administration. Grammy Music Educator Award — Three LHS educators — Ms. Billings-White, Mx. Jayson, and Ms. Labrie — are quarterfinalists for the 2027 Grammy Music Educator Award. Go team! Jimmy Awards — Four LHS students from "Guys and Dolls" qualified to audition, with Maggie Radcliffe advancing as one of fourteen finalists. METG Nominations — "Guys and Dolls" earned nominations for Best Orchestra and Best Female Leading Role (Maggie Radcliffe). Music Festivals — LHS Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band earned First Place Superior ratings in NYC; the Symphony was named best orchestra at the festival. The LHS Chorale earned Superior/First Place at Music in the Parks. The Jazz Combo earned Gold at MAJE and performed at the Regattabar. The Repertoire and Chamber Orchestras both earned Gold at MICCA. MathCounts — Clarke students Yonis Gulleth, Shlok Mukund, and Brandon Ni helped Team Massachusetts earn 1st place nationally in Orlando. Each received a $2,000 scholarship. MAFLA Teacher of the Year — Congratulations to Angélica Fajardo-Flores, named 2027 Teacher of the Year by the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association. Chess Championship — Clarke 7th grader Christine Nguyen represented Team USA at the Pan American Chess Championship, earning Gold with a perfect 9-0 record and Silver in Blitz — the only player across 25 countries with a perfect Rapid score. State Chess Championship Success — At the state individual championship, Hastings students Ella Zhang, Brooks Jiang, and Estabrook student Yashmit Rastogi earned top-three finishes in the K–5 division. Lexington teams also dominated the state team championship, with Diamond Middle School capturing the state title, Clarke Middle School finishing second, and Hastings Elementary winning the elementary division championship. Congratulations to all of our student competitors and to community supporter Anil Ahuja for his continued advocacy of youth chess programming in Lexington.  MAFLA Student & Teacher Awards — Riya Rao (French) and Annie Wang (Latin) received excellence awards at LHS. Teachers Beckie Bray Rankin and Maureen Haviland were also recognized. Several middle school students were honored for multilingualism and inclusion projects. Congratulations to both boys and girls track & field teams for winning their respective team titles at this weekend's Division 1 Massachusetts Middle School T & F Championships!   LHS Musical Earns Two METG Awards — Congratulations to the Lexington High School Performing Arts Department on earning two Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild (METG) Awards for  Guys and Dolls . Maggie Radcliffe received the Best Performance – Female Leading Role award for her portrayal of Adelaide, and the student pit orchestra was recognized as Best Orchestra. These honors reflect the exceptional talent, dedication, and hard work of our students and staff. LPS Retirees — Congratulations to all the LPS Retirees this year: Janet Almeida, Wendy Cordero, Marlene Couture, Jane Day, Barbara Fortier, Tracey Herbert, Karen Hurley, Cheryl Kelleher, Teresa Koba, Claudia Lawson, Patricia Lyons, Jane McLaughlin, Emmet O’Brien, Jean Pothier, Marth Queenin, Lisah Rhodes, Karen Salvucci, Deidre Schadler, Carrie Scheer-Bourget, Margaret Seymourian, and Lisa Soulier. We are deeply grateful to the community members who attended and shared their perspectives — your feedback is directly shaping the design of our new high school. We also want to extend a special thank you to the School Building Committee members who joined the sessions to engage with our school community. Lexington High School Building Project Community For...

Lexington community members are invited to attend the next Lexington High School Building Project Community Forum on Wednesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. The forum will provide updates on the project timeline, construction logistics, design development, project website, finances, and environmental permitting. The meeting will be held in person in the Estabrook Room at Cary Memorial Building and will also be available via Zoom. Superintendent's Report  173 Bedford Street, Lexington, MA 02420 Tel: 781-861-2580 SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT FROM THE MAY 12, 2026 SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING 🎉 GREAT NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOLS Appreciation Month  — Over the next month, we are proud to celebrate our Speech-Language Pathologists in honor of Speech-Language Pathologist Appreciation Day. We are grateful for their dedication and the important role they play in supporting our students and families each day. National Science Bowl Champions!  — William Diamond Middle School won the National Science Bowl Middle School National Championship — their first title in nine years! Congratulations to students Idhant Jaiswal, Helene Yang, Andrea Xu, Vince Srirattana, and Houwen Wei, and to coach Whitney Didie and supporter Wendy Moy. LHS Science Fair  — 40 students presented research, with several advancing to state and international competitions. Top honors went to Jerry Xu and Laiba Khan (1st Place), Rajarshi Mandal (2nd), and Austin Li (3rd). Laiba Khan and Jerry Xu will represent Massachusetts at the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair this month! Ruth M. Batson Leadership Award  —  Ruth Marion Babson  was an American civil rights activist and outspoken advocate of equal education and the desegregation of Boston Public Schools.  Ms. Hamilton was honored by METCO, Inc. for her outstanding commitment to educational equity. Congratulations! Leon Trilling Equity in Education Award  —  Leon Trilling  was professor emeritus in  MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics  and co-founder of METCO program. I was extremely honored to be selected as the recipient of this award by METCO, Inc. at the 60th anniversary celebration.   Community Wellness Certificate  — LHS launched its first-ever Community Wellness Certificate, recognizing students Gabe Ostrower, Colin Smith, Sophie Johnson, Nethra Ramaiah, and Aryam Dave for their dedication to public health and peer leadership. Italian Language Contest  — LHS students Casey McKenna and Sofia Callisti were recognized in the Italian Consulate of Boston's regional contest for their creative podcast work. Bravissimi! MAHPERD Honor Award  — Julie Fenn, LPS Assistant Coordinator for PE, Health, and Wellness, received the 2026 MAHPERD Honor Award for her long-term contributions to health and physical education across Massachusetts. Well deserved! Best Community for Music Education  — Lexington Public Schools has been named a 2026 National Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. A huge thank you to our Performing Arts teachers for their dedication! Special Olympics  — Our May 1st Special Olympics was a wonderful day of celebration and sportsmanship, bringing together students, staff, and volunteers from Lexington and neighboring towns. All are welcome!  📎 Learn more: [ link ]    💙 LPS VALUES IN ACTION Bridge Elementary Civic Leaders  — Fifth-grade student government members met with State Senator Michael Barrett and Representative Michelle Ciccolo to discuss issues they care about and presented donations from a food drive that collected 21 boxes of goods for the Lexington Food Pantry. Holocaust Speakers at LHS  — 10th-grade World History students heard firsthand accounts from Holocaust survivors and witnesses, including author Rita Goldberg, survivor Sami Steigmann, and Hanni Myers. These powerful visits remind us why history must be remembered and shared. Fiske Hydroponic Bloomtastic Garden  — Fiske Elementary School’s Hydroponic Bloomtastic Garden has been flourishing with basil, and earlier this week, students in Mr. Wilde’s Grade 4 class proudly harvested the crop they helped grow.
