Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Robert Craven provided context for the project, noting that the improvements were made possible through the district’s continued collaboration with the cities of Irvine and Lake Forest, and local development partners, to support growing enrollment and evolving student needs.  Aside from the new two-story building, extensive site improvements were also completed, including new paving, utilities, landscaping, and irrigation, upgraded bike storage, and enhanced security fencing. The campus received significant outdoor enhancements with the addition of six basketball courts, including one feature court with solar-reflective coating and one multi-use court designed for both volleyball and basketball. Outdoor seating was also added, courtesy of the district’s Food Services Department, to provide additional flexible gathering spaces for students. Superintendent Dr. Turner closed the program by highlighting the broader impact of the improvements on the Serrano community. “These new learning spaces represent opportunity. They give our students room to collaborate, to explore new ideas, and to grow into confident learners prepared for the next stage of their educational journey,” she noted. The celebration concluded with a ceremonial ribbon cutting in front of the new classroom building—symbolizing the start of an exciting new chapter for Serrano students and staff. Watch the ribbon cutting and learn more about these exciting campus upgrades in this month’s episode of SV Connects at the beginning of this newsletter or on district social media channels.   OCDE Video Showcases the Strength of Saddleback Valley Unified The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) recently released a new feature video as part of its OC District Pulse series, highlighting the many programs, people, and opportunities that make the Saddleback Valley Unified School District a special place to learn and grow. The celebration brought together students, families, staff, district leaders, and community partners to mark the completion of the thoughtfully designed space. Principal Christina Stevenson-Carrera welcomed guests alongside representatives from the SVUSD Board, including Vice President Michele Sparks and Trustee Amanda Morrell, as well as Superintendent Dr. Crystal Turner and district leaders who have supported the project from its earliest stages. The PAWS & Relax Room was created through a collaborative effort involving school staff, PTA leaders, district specialists, and families who contributed time, resources, and creativity. What began as a vision for a calm, supportive retreat evolved into a fully realized space designed to help students practice emotional regulation strategies, reset during challenging moments, and return to learning with confidence. A highlight of the event was a student perspective shared by fifth-grader Grayson Dunn, who described how the space offers a safe, calming environment with sensory tools, comfortable seating, and opportunities for self-regulation. His remarks reflected the room’s purpose: giving students practical tools to recognize emotions and support their own well-being. Now officially open, the PAWS & Relax Room stands as a symbol of what can be accomplished when a school community comes together with a shared commitment to supporting the whole child. Visitors were invited to experience the space firsthand and see how it is already helping create a calmer, more inclusive campus environment at Foothill Ranch Elementary.   SVUSD Student Artists Earn Recognition in Major Orange County Exhibitions Saddleback Valley Unified School District is celebrating a remarkable season of artistic achievement as student work is showcased across three distinguished Orange County exhibitions this spring: Laguna College of Art + Design’s (LCAD) Color It Orange Exhibition, the OCArts4All Student Art Showcase, and the Festival of Arts Junior Art Exhibit in Laguna Beach. We are proud of our counseling team and remain committed to preparing every Charger to leave El Toro truly future-ready.” At the heart of this recognition is El Toro’s Future Ready California event, part of the statewide ACAC initiative that helps students complete at least one postsecondary application with direct, hands-on support. El Toro has hosted the event since 2021, building a coordinated process that brings together counselors, staff, families, district personnel, and community partners. Planning begins each spring as counselors secure dates for the following school year and coordinate participation from universities, community colleges, trade schools, and military recruiters who work directly with students in application rooms. In the months leading up to the event, staff prepare student resources such as transcripts, application materials, and financial aid support. Seniors are placed into application rooms based on their postsecondary goals, ensuring targeted guidance throughout the process. A custom two-day block schedule allows students dedicated time to complete applications and receive individualized support. The experience concludes with the celebratory “Application After Party,” where students walk a red carpet, take photos, and sign the school’s Future Ready banner displayed in the counseling office. The program continues to expand its reach. During the school's October 2025 event, students submitted 269 applications, and by January 2026, that number had grown to 944 applications across community colleges, four-year universities, and trade schools. This recognition places El Toro among a select group of schools nationwide, leading the way in expanding postsecondary access and ensuring students are prepared for life after graduation. This year, 29 exceptional educators were honored as site-level Teachers of the Year, each selected for their unwavering commitment to student success, innovative instructional practices, and meaningful contributions to their school communities. Their dedication reflects the very best of what it means to serve students and support learning across the district. In addition to the site-level honorees, three district-wide Teachers of the Year were selected and will represent SVUSD in the 2027 Orange County Teacher of the Year program. “Tonight, we come together to recognize the educators who bring our classrooms and campuses to life, and whose daily efforts reflect the very spirit of SVUSD,” Superintendent Dr. Crystal Turner shared. “Through creativity, care, and an unwavering belief in their students, they cultivate learning environments where curiosity grows, confidence builds, and every student is encouraged to reach their full potential. Their influence extends far beyond the classroom, shaping not only academic success but the character and future of our Saddleback Valley community.” The evening included remarks from SVUSD Board of Education President Suzie Swartz and Saddleback Valley Educators Association (SVEA) President Mandy De Groote, and served as a heartfelt tribute to the educators whose dedication strengthens classrooms and school communities throughout the district. Dr. Turner also recognized the generous sponsors who helped make the celebration possible—SVEA, Saddleback Valley Management Team Association, PJHM Architects, and SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union. Their continued partnership reflects a shared commitment to honoring excellence in education and uplifting those who make a lasting difference for students. Congratulations to the 32 educators recognized this year for their passion, professionalism, and dedication to student success. Their work continues to inspire learning, build connections, and positively shape the future of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.   Helping Our Community Bloom: SVUSD Celebrates the Partnerships That Help Students Grow On April 16, the Saddleback Valley Management Team Association (SVMTA) hosted its annual Community Recognition Dinner at the Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club, bringing together volunteers, families, and district and site leaders for an evening dedicated to gratitude and celebration. This year’s garden-inspired theme reflected the care, commitment, and collaboration that help students flourish across the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. The event honored the many individuals whose time and dedication nurture strong school communities and create meaningful opportunities for students. From organizing campus events to supporting classrooms and leading parent organizations, these partners play a vital role in cultivating environments where every student can succeed. Dr. Jimmy Martin, SVMTA President and Principal of El Toro High School, welcomed guests and reflected on the power of partnership in education. Drawing on the evening’s theme, he reminded attendees that growth, whether in a garden or a school community, requires consistent care and connection. “Our students are the seeds of possibility, and our educators work tirelessly every day to nurture their growth,” he shared. “But what makes our district truly special is that we are not doing this work alone. Our community partners—our volunteers—step in to enrich, support, and elevate that experience in ways that are both meaningful and lasting.” Superintendent Dr. Crystal Turner echoed that message, highlighting the shared responsibility of educators and community members in helping students reach their full potential. She compared the success of SVUSD schools to a well-tended garden—one that grows through patience, care, and collaboration. “Together, you help create the conditions where students can grow and thrive—much like a well-tended garden, nurtured with care, patience, and purpose,” Dr. Turner said. She also noted the excitement of seeing that dedication come to life as the school year progresses, watching the seeds planted by volunteers and partners bloom into meaningful experiences for students. The celebration served as a reminder that education is a shared journey. When schools and communities work together with purpose and heart, the results are lasting and impactful, and support SVUSD students to blossom each day.   Standout Achievements in Academics, Athletics, Leadership, and Communications at Recognized at April Board Meeting At the April Board Meeting, the Saddleback Valley Unified School District Board of Education recognized a range of schools, student programs, and district initiatives for their outstanding achievements across academics, athletics, and communications. The new experience provided administrators and district leaders with a meaningful opportunity to observe and better understand the work of certificated employees through classroom shadowing and program-based experiences. The initiative was designed to shine a spotlight on the expertise, preparation, and dedication that educators bring to supporting student learning and growth each day. Administrators connected with a wide range of certificated roles across the district, including classroom teachers, specialists, and program instructors serving students from preschool through adult education. Superintendent Dr. Crystal Turner participated in two shadowing experiences, spending time with Kristin Raub, an AP Computer Science teacher at Trabuco Hills High School, and Ashley Presley, who provides Preschool and Speech-Language Pathology services at La Tierra Early Childhood Center. These visits offered valuable insight into the planning, instruction, and individualized support that define certificated staff’s work with students. By modeling this new experience after the successful classified employee program, SVUSD continues to expand opportunities to recognize and celebrate the many professionals who contribute to student success. The ACE programs also help strengthen connections between district leaders and staff, reinforcing a shared commitment to supporting students and fostering positive learning environments across the Saddleback Valley. A sincere thank you to all the certificated employees who welcomed participants into their classrooms and programs, shared their expertise, and demonstrated the dedication that makes a difference for students each day. SVUSD’s project will focus on strengthening student success and school climate by building on the district’s existing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. The work will expand the use of the inclusive skill-building learning approach across nine secondary schools, supporting SVUSD educators in responding to student behavior through relationship-building, skill development, and restorative practices. Through this initiative, SVUSD aims to deepen its commitment to creating safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments while reducing exclusionary discipline practices and strengthening connections between students and staff. Each selected district will receive up to $525,000 over a three-year period beginning in July 2026. The initiative is part of OCDE’s broader effort to identify, test, and scale innovative practices that can be shared across Orange County schools to improve student outcomes.   Los Alisos Intermediate Hosts SVUSD Intramural Soccer and Chess Tournaments Student-athletes and competitors from Saddleback Valley Unified School District’s four intermediate schools gathered on March 31 at Los Alisos for a day of spirited competition, sportsmanship, and school pride, as SVUSD hosted both its Intramural Soccer Tournament and Chess Tournament. On the soccer fields, teams battled through fast-paced matchups filled with energy, teamwork, and strong defensive and offensive play. After a full day of competition, congratulations went to RSM for capturing the boys’ championship title, and to Serrano for earning both the Unified and girls’ championship titles. At the same time, students gathered indoors for the Intramural Chess Tournament, where focus, patience, and strategic thinking took center stage. Players from all four intermediate schools competed in a series of matchups that highlighted critical thinking, sportsmanship, and respect for opponents, with Serrano ultimately winning. The successful events continue the tradition of intramural competitions that bring SVUSD intermediate schools together through friendly rivalry and shared experiences, whether on the field or across the chessboard. A standout example of family engagement was the six-week Latino Family Project, led by Student Community Outreach Liaisons Andrea Echezarreta and Lourent Peguero. The program brought families together each week in a welcoming environment where parents felt comfortable learning and sharing. Sessions focused on A-G requirements, financial aid, scholarships, and the many pathways to higher education. By the end of the program, families reported feeling more confident in navigating the educational system and inspired by the possibilities available to their students. The most common feedback was a request for more opportunities like this one, highlighting the strong connections built between the school and its Latino families. Students also showed their commitment to inclusion during the 2nd Annual Best Buddies Friendship Walk on April 11, 2026. Chapters from Mission Viejo and Trabuco Hills High School participated in the event, which raised more than $38,000 in support of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Both schools were recognized as Top Fundraiser School Teams, reflecting the dedication of students to building friendships and fostering a more inclusive community. In the area of student achievement, Future Farmers of America (FFA) junior Avannie Ure earned top honors at the Imaginology competition. Through dedication and perseverance, Avannie’s steer, “Brisket,” was named Grand Champion while competing against students from other schools and FFA and 4-H groups. Each donation can potentially save up to three lives, supporting patients of all ages, from trauma and burn victims to those undergoing heart surgery, organ transplants, or cancer treatment. Across Trabuco Hills’ two drives this year, 144 units were collected, potentially helping 432 people. A big thank-you goes to all donors, volunteers, and the Red Cross nursing staff for making the day possible. Your generosity has made a real impact! This year, the school was recognized in the Exemplary High Achievers category, which honors schools where student groups meet high performance criteria across all state indicators, demonstrating consistently strong achievement and minimal achievement gaps. “Being named a California Distinguished School is a celebration of the intentional work our staff does every day,” Principal Tiffany Harville shared. “I believe that when educators take time to do the inside-out work, growing in cultural awareness, building meaningful relationships, and pairing that with hard work and a deep belief in every student, success naturally follows.” A key signature practice contributing to La Paz’s success is its First 20 Days program, which staff collaboratively review each year and implement consistently across campus. The program establishes clear, high expectations for both students and staff while intentionally building a positive school culture inside and outside the classroom. By emphasizing consistency, belonging, and academic focus from the start of the year, it sets a strong foundation for student success and reinforces the shared commitment to “the La Paz way.” Click here to read the full story and see a list of 2026 California Distinguished Schools.   Laguna Hills High School Boys and Girls Basketball Achieve Postseason Success The Saddleback Valley Unified School District proudly recognizes significant postseason accomplishments by Laguna Hills High School’s basketball programs.
