New Option For Inclement Weather Delays - 3 Hour Del...
New 3-Hour Delay Option for Inclement Weather Our district covers over 110 square miles and several microclimates, which makes weather-related decisions challenging. During the recent storm, we had to close schools for four days, however in two of those cases, a 3-hour delay could have allowed roads to improve enough for a safe start. For years we have either closed or used a 2-hour delay, but we’ve noticed that in some instances, an extra hour makes a big difference—improving safety for buses, staff, and student drivers. To address this, we are implementing a 3-hour delay option for severe weather days. This addition will help reduce school closures and make-up days while keeping safety a priority. This does not replace our current closure and 2-hour delay process. 3-Hour Delay Details Schools will start 3 hours later than usual and release at normal time . Start times: NKHS, KHS, PMS: 10:55 AM KMS: 11:05 AM All Elementary Schools: 12:20 PM Bus Routes: Buses will pick up students 3 hours later than originally scheduled. What’s Canceled? Preschool - both AM and PM Field trips Out-of-district and any mid-day transportation Before-school activities & zero-period classes Breakfast service Lunch Service: Grab-and-go meals will be available when students arrive for those who need it. This would include food that does not need to be heated to be served. Examples: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, bagels and yogurt, fruit, cheese sticks, etc. We know this shortens the instructional day, but our talented teachers will make the most of every minute. Safely keeping schools open remains our goal. Early Release Wednesday on Delayed Start Days Effective immediately, if a 2-hour or 3-hour delay happens on a Wednesday, early release will be canceled , and students will follow a regular full-day release schedule. Staff professional development will also be canceled. Thank You! We appreciate our association leaders and building leaders for their input and are especially grateful to our transportation, food service, and maintenance teams for making this possible. Thank you for your patience and support as we implement this new option!

Architects and engineers have begun meeting with school community stakeholders to assess needs and define the scope of each project. At Hilder Pearson Elementary, discussions have focused on plans for a new gymnasium and solutions to improve vehicle and bus circulation on campus. At Suquamish Elementary, stakeholders are evaluating upgrades to parent pick-up and drop-off circulation, parking, front entry and administrative office spaces, as well as reconfiguring and expanding classroom spaces. The project will also enhance accessibility and better meet the needs of students with disabilities. These early planning sessions are the first steps in transforming the approved levy projects into meaningful improvements that will benefit students, staff, families and our community. The district will continue working closely with architects, engineers and the school communities to ensure these projects align with the needs of each school. Facilities Advisory Committee Focuses on Future Planning The FAC has been hard at work since the passage of the Capital Levy in November, evaluating past efforts and looking ahead to future improvements. In December, the committee reconvened to reflect on the Capital Levy process. While the 52% approval was a positive step, committee members agreed that additional outreach time would be beneficial for future planning. The discussion centered on building upon the work they completed in 2024 and using the next several months to further refine capital improvement priorities. The committee emphasized the importance of continued community engagement and agreed to first focus on identifying the types of facilities and improvements needed to support high-quality, innovative student learning. Once those needs are clearly defined, the committee will then explore the best funding mechanisms to support them. In January, the committee focused on CTE programs and how facility improvements could support career pathways. John Waller, assistant director of innovative learning, provided an overview of current offering at KHS and NKHS. He highlighted opportunities for program growth and facility limitations that impact teaching, and led a tour of the NKHS Technology Building to showcase areas in need of improvement. At the end of the month, the committee traveled to Central Kitsap and toured Olympic High School and CKHS/MS to view their modernized and new construction projects. This provided the committee with valuable insight into what is possible in North Kitsap. Learn more about the Facilities Advisory Committee and their work at nkschools.org/fac . Supporting our Immigrant Families and Students
Dear North Kitsap Families, I want to take a moment to address a concern that some families have shared about student safety, particularly regarding immigration status. In the North Kitsap School District, our priority is ensuring that every student feels safe, welcome, and supported, so they can focus on learning in an environment where they belong. Yesterday, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) published updated guidance reaffirming that all Washington State public schools have a constitutional and moral obligation to provide a free, high-quality education to all students residing within their boundaries. State and federal law prohibit public school districts from discriminating based on race, color, or national origin. Additionally, Washington State law specifically prohibits discrimination based on citizenship or immigration status, ensuring all students have access to school programs and services. Our schools are not only places of learning but also spaces of belonging and stability for all students. With that in mind, I want to share the following: Schools are safe spaces for all students. Under Washington State law, immigration enforcement is not permitted on school property without a valid court order or judicial warrant. We do not grant permission for immigration enforcement on school grounds. This includes all school facilities and outdoor areas. Our focus is on student success. The resources of our district staff, facilities, and information are dedicated to supporting student learning and well-being, not the operations of outside agencies. At North Kitsap School District, we are committed to following state and federal laws while doing everything possible to support and protect every student in our care. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your trust is deeply valued, and we are here to support you. Thank you for being part of the North Kitsap community and for working with us to create a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all students. Warmly, Rachel Davenport Superintendent, North Kitsap School District

HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There will be no school on Monday, January 20 , in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We encourage families to use this day not just as a break but as an opportunity to engage with the community and reflect on Dr. King’s legacy. At North Kitsap High School, students heard an inspiring message from Justin Washington , a school psychologist, performance coach, and transformational speaker who has dedicated his career to empowering students. Growing up in Arlington, Virginia, Justin experienced firsthand the challenges of education as a former special education student. During his time with students, he shared the stories of the Little Rock Nine and Ruby Bridges , highlighting the extraordinary courage these young students showed in the face of conflict. He spoke about how they broke barriers much larger than themselves, paving the way for students today to learn together and have equal access to education. Justin challenged students to reflect on their own legacy, character, and how moments of conflict can be opportunities for greatness. His words reinforced the importance of honoring Dr. King’s vision—not just on this holiday, but every day. Looking for ways to engage? Here are some local events happening in honor of Dr. King: Kitsap's Annual MLK Day Celebration – Monday at 10 a.m. at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Presidents Hall. Free event with speakers and organizations focused on racial justice. Bainbridge Island MLK Celebration – Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Includes discussions, workshops, performances, and community engagement. RSVP required for the art workshop. Blakely Harbor Park Work Project – Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join a day of service with Bainbridge Island Metro Parks and Recreation for environmental projects. Register at www.biparks.org . Quincy Square Groundbreaking – Monday at 2 p.m. in Bremerton. Celebrate the next phase of the Quincy Square project, honoring Quincy Jones and the legacy of African-American pioneers in Kitsap County. Kingston High School’s New Biomedical Science Class Brings Learning to Life Kingston High School students are diving into the exciting world of biomedical science through Principles of Biomedical Science , a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) course designed for students in grades 9-12. As part of a CTE pathway into medical careers, this hands-on, team-focused class immerses students in biology, anatomy, genetics, and more while tackling real-world challenges faced by medical professionals. This full-year course is part of the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science program, which provides students with industry-aligned, real-world learning experiences. Throughout the year, students progress through four engaging units. In Medical Investigation , they solve crime scene mysteries, analyze human anatomy, and act as medical detectives. The Clinical Care unit introduces them to patient diagnosis and healthcare procedures, while Outbreaks & Emergencies explores public health, epidemiology, and emergency medical response. In Innovation , students design solutions to biomedical challenges using cutting-edge technology. Recently, students deepened their understanding of heart anatomy and blood flow through hands-on dissection labs. Whether solving medical mysteries or exploring healthcare innovations, students in Principles of Biomedical Science are building the skills and knowledge to prepare for future careers in medicine and healthcare. DISTRICT NEWS January is School Board Appreciation Month! This month, we celebrate our North Kitsap School Board members for their dedication and leadership. It’s clear from the overwhelming support of staff and the trust he’s earned in our community that Bob is the right leader to guide NKHS into its next chapter." Before joining NKHS, Mr. Marshall held administrative roles as principal at Ketchikan High School, Ketchikan Charter School, and Emmonak School in Alaska. He began his career in education as a high school social studies teacher at Peninsula High School, Shelton High School, and Hooper Bay School, cultivating a deep understanding of the classroom experience that informs his leadership approach. Mr. Marshall holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Pacific Lutheran University and a Master’s in Education Administration from Grand Canyon University.
