The students are part of a soccer club formed by Assistant Principal JoAna Smith to help multilingual learners feel more engaged at school. Smith, who serves as the school’s administrator for the multilingual learner population, said she loves Henrico County Public School’s focus on cultural responsiveness as part of its instructional model. “Part of that is you have to be intentional with relationships with students and make connections with them,” she said. Creating the club has been a way to deepen those connections. Read more here, including what students say the program means to them and how it has improved attendance, grades and behavior.   Fair Oaks Elementary to commemorate 100 years with community celebration May 2 Also coming up is Fair Oaks' centennial celebration on May 2, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme is “Moving forward while looking back,” celebrating a century of community, education and tradition. Seed money was provided to help build the schools, while local governments and Black communities, despite facing significant hardships, came together to contribute money, land, building materials and labor to provide educational opportunities for their children.”  For more information, contact the Fair Oaks Commemorative Committee at FairoakselementaryCommittee26@gmail.com.   School videos from across Henrico County From Short Pump to Varina, find more videos about HCPS schools at the HCPS YouTube channel. The conservative plan takes into account the uncertainties in state funding while prioritizing high-impact areas that directly affect classrooms and facilities, including: 20 English Language Learner positions 7 Special Education staff positions Staffing for the new Center for CyberSecurity at Henrico High School and the new Living Building Funding for operational needs, including additional HVAC staff and increased funding for maintenance and repairs Implementation costs of Year 3 of Henrico CARES, including 5 school counselors and funding to expand telehealth services HCPS staff will also receive a 3% across-the-board salary increase, and the division is offsetting most, if not all, rising health care plan costs. “On behalf of the School Board, I am happy that we can unanimously support and approve this budget,” said School Board Chair Madison Irving. “While it is a reduction from the plan we approved in February, we appreciate the Board of Supervisors’ indication that if additional state funds become available, we will be able to move forward in filling additional instructional positions from the original budget proposal.”   A few more important dates and reminders: Raising Calm, The Power of Silence: Parents and educators are invited to attend this three-week series that will offer practical tools for creating a calm emotional climate at home and in the classroom. March 27, 2026 • Vol. 9, Issue 15 SPRING BREAK IS HERE • HEART OF HENRICO • KINDERGARTEN KICKOFF • TAKING ACTION ON HVAC • SCHOOL VIDEOS FROM HENRICO • HEF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION • HCPS SURVEYS   Have a happy Spring Break! Other reminders: April 9: Monthly HCPS job fair April 21: Schools closed for the special election   Award winners honored as 'Heart of Henrico' Congratulations to our first-ever Heart of Henrico Award winners! Fifteen staff members across Henrico County Public Schools were selected for going above and beyond to serve the schools, students, families, staff members and communities they represent. Recipients were selected from a pool of more than 400 nominations submitted by students, parents/guardians and peers. They were honored during the inaugural Heart of Henrico Awards, presented last week in a celebration at the Advanced Career Education Center at Hermitage. The winners represent the five core values in HCPS’ strategic plan, the Journey to 2030: Student-Focused, Belonging, Collaboration, Innovation and Equity. “The Heart of Henrico Award is more than recognition,” said Dr. Amy Cashwell, HCPS superintendent, who celebrated the winners with members of the Henrico School Board. “It is a reminder that Henrico County Public Schools is at its best when its core values are not just words on a page, but values lived out in classrooms, cafeterias, front offices, libraries, school buses and every space where students and families are served.” Watch video highlights from the awards ceremony and learn more about all our Heart of Henrico Award recipients at https://www.henricoschools.us/page/heart-of-henrico.     Kindergarten registration kickoff is April 9! Kindergarten registration is officially open in Henrico, and our divisionwide kickoff event is around the corner! Families of Henrico County children who will be 5 years old by Sept. 30 can register for kindergarten in person at one of our 46 elementary schools from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 4:30-6:30 p.m. on April 9. Families can complete the entire process that day, or they can complete or start the process online. Required documents include:  Original birth certificate Proof of residency Immunization records Completed physical (within 12 months of the start of school) Picture ID or driver's license for parents/legal guardians that includes current Henrico address Visit www.hcps.info/KRegistration for more information. To find your zoned school, visit https://www.henricoschools.us/school-locator.   HCPS is taking action to address heating and air conditioning issues When classrooms are too hot or too cold, it affects everyone, including the students trying to learn and the staff working to support them. HCPS leaders have heard those concerns and continue to prioritize making HVAC repairs more quickly while also strengthening ongoing proactive maintenance. For more than a year, HCPS has been working with an outside company to visually inspect and assess the mechanical systems at every school. The results will help staff prioritize needed repairs and create a roadmap for ongoing maintenance and replacement cycles. To further increase efficiency, the division is also evaluating and modernizing internal tracking systems while proposing more HVAC staffing and funding for the coming year. Finally, HCPS is partnering with Henrico General Government to expand the contractor pool to expedite repairs and shift from annual to quarterly proactive system checks. Managing 500 HVAC units with more than 8,000 components and parts is a massive job. Despite our HVAC technicians’ tireless work, some repairs require specialized contractors for specific brands and may involve a 4- to 6-month wait for replacement parts. To bridge the gap, HCPS makes temporary repairs or rents equipment whenever possible. We also use space heaters and spot chillers in impacted areas.  Dr. Cashwell and the school board want to reassure families that, aside from school safety, the HCPS Operations team has no higher priority than strengthening HVAC maintenance and repair. Throughout the spring and summer, Facilities and Operations staff will complete planned preventive maintenance on heating and cooling components and monitor system performance and efficiency.   School videos from across Henrico County You can see more video highlights from HCPS schools and classrooms on the HCPS YouTube channel.
