We hope to see you there!   Appreciation and Reflection:  My Journey at Harrington School  by Rosaura Castellanos, Principal, Harrington School As I reflect on my time at Harrington School since the 2019-2020 school year, I am filled with a deep sense of appreciation for our community and all that we have overcome together. Taking on the role of principal – during the pandemic – was no easy task. It was a time of uncertainty, adaptation, and resilience. Building relationships and fostering friendships took on a different meaning as we navigated virtual meetings, safety protocols, and unprecedented challenges. Despite these obstacles,  I am proud of what we have accomplished.  Over the years, I have worked diligently to build strong relationships with our parents and community members. Through open communication, trust, and collaboration, we have strengthened the bonds that hold our school together. These connections have not only supported our students but have also fostered a sense of belonging and partnership within our school community. One of the most significant aspects of my time at Harrington has been implementing new systems that benefit both our students and staff. These changes, rooted in structure, consistency, and student-centered practices, have positively impacted our school environment. From refining  instructional strategies to improving school-wide procedures, each step has contributed to a more efficient and supportive learning space.  We have worked very hard with the PBIS team to implement changes that have significantly improved student behavior and school climate. Through consistent expectations, positive reinforcement, and a focus on social-emotional learning, we have created a more positive and structured environment where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to succeed. Harrington is proud to be a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) school and to have a Special Education Day Class. We celebrate the diversity of our students and take pride in the inclusive learning environment we have created. All of our students are growing academically, socially, and emotionally while feeling a strong sense of belonging within our school community. We are fortunate to collaborate with various institutions and organizations that enrich our school environment. We host student teachers from California Lutheran University and California State University Channel Islands, providing aspiring educators with valuable hands-on experience in our classrooms. We also welcome student observers from California State University Channel Islands… further strengthening the connection between our school and higher education. Through our partnership with the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE), we have been able to bring in support, and resources, that benefit both students and staff. Moreover, we proudly participate in the Filipino Gramas program – which enhances cultural exchange and learning opportunities within our school community. As I look ahead, I am grateful for the dedication of our teachers, staff, students, and families. Together, we have built a foundation of resilience, growth, and success. I appreciate the unwavering support of our school community, and I remain committed to ensuring that Harrington continues to thrive. I will continue to work hard because  this is my community . At the end of this school year, I will have proudly served the Oxnard School District for 26 years. Having grown up in Oxnard, I serve with great pride and dedication. I look forward to continuing our collective efforts to make Harrington School a place where all students can succeed and flourish.   Laura Pigeon Recognized with Math Educator Award by Matt Haber, OSD Mathematics Manager  The Ventura County Mathematics Council has named  Laura Pigeon  the recipient of its prestigious  Outstanding Math Educator Award , recognizing her unwavering commitment to student success and excellence in mathematics education. “Mrs. Pigeon”  is a 5th grade Math teacher at Thurgood Marshall school and has been teaching in OSD for the last 21 years. She joined our Oxnard family after graduating from college and earning her masters degree in Administration at California State, Channel Islands. Pigeon’s work exemplifies the kind of innovative instruction that truly empowers students. She sees math not as an isolated subject, but as a tool that enhances learning across disciplines and prepares students to be critical thinkers. With a deep passion for both teaching and learning,  Pigeon has built a reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking educator… who consistently goes beyond the textbook to make math meaningful for her students. Her approach integrates relevant, engaging, and cross-curricular activities that not only foster mathematical thinking but also connect to real-world concepts and other subject areas. A cornerstone of Pigeon’s success lies in her commitment to collaboration with fellow educators. Whether co-designing interdisciplinary lessons or participating in professional development workshops, she continually seeks opportunities to grow alongside her peers and contribute to a thriving Professional Learning Community. At the heart of her teaching philosophy is a relentless drive to push every student forward, regardless  of where they start. Her classroom is a place where students feel seen, challenged and supported. By nurturing both confidence and curiosity, Pigeon ensures that each learner reaches their full potential. Colleagues and students alike describe her as an “inspiring presence whose dedication goes far beyond the classroom.” This award serves as a testament to her extraordinary efforts and lasting impact on the field of mathematics education in Oxnard. Understanding CAASPP Testing:  How to Support Your Student   by Anna Thomas,  Director of School Performance & Student Outcomes Each spring, students across California participate in the  California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) . These standardized tests are designed to measure what students know and can complete in core academic areas – helping schools and families understand student progress and identify ways to support learning.     The CAASPP system: Assesses student performance  in  English Language Arts (ELA) ,  mathematics , and  science  (through the  California Science Test , or CAST). Measures growth  toward the California state standards, helping educators improve instruction. Identifies student needs , strengths, and learning gaps. Provides important data  for school and district accountability and improvement efforts. Students in  grades 3 –   8  take the Smarter Balanced tests for ELA and math. Science assessments are given in  grades 5 and 8. 👉 Learn more about the  CAASPP  system : In our Oxnard School District, students take this test during the month of May. Each school has its own testing schedule. Please look for a letter with more information which will go home with your student. 🤝  How Parents Can Support at Home You can make a big difference in how your child approaches the CAASPP tests. Here are four practical ways to help: 1. Create a Positive Mindset Remind your child that these tests are just one way to show what they’ve learned. Encourage them to stay calm, focused, and to try their best. 2. Prioritize Sleep and Nutrition A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast can greatly improve your child’s focus and energy levels on testing days. All of our schools offer breakfast. 3. Try the Practice Tests Together Familiarize your child with the test format and tools by exploring  practice and training tests  available here:   https://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training 4. Use Starting Smarter for Score Reports Once scores are available, you can use  Starting Smarter  to understand your child’s results and get resources tailored to their needs. Visit:   https://ca.startingsmarter.org Classroom and Office Safety: Reflections and Appreciation by Norma Magaña, Risk Manager Creating a safe environment in classrooms and offices is essential for fostering learning, creativity, and productivity. When safety measures are thoughtfully implemented… every individual feels secure and valued. This commitment to protection and well-being supports both educational and professional growth. In classrooms, safety begins with regular maintenance of equipment, clear emergency exit signs, and routine fire drills.  These practices ensure that students can focus on learning while knowing that prepared responses are in place for unforeseen situations. Likewise, office settings benefit from well-organized spaces that include accessible first aid kits, updated safety protocols, and consistent training sessions. The integration of these measures not only minimizes risk but also builds trust among colleagues. Appreciation plays a significant role in promoting a culture of safety. Acknowledging the efforts of teachers, custodians, and office staff, reinforces the importance of maintaining secure environments. Their dedication and attention to detail remind us that every precaution taken is a gesture of care and commitment. When we express gratitude for these efforts, we empower everyone to contribute to a safer community. Reflecting on our own experiences can further enhance our commitment to safety. By considering past incidents and reviewing current practices, we can identify opportunities for improvement and innovation. These reflections encourage proactive thinking and continuous learning – which are vital for adapting to new challenges. Ultimately, the combination of effective safety measures, sincere appreciation, and thoughtful reflection creates a robust framework for both classroom and office safety. Embracing a culture that values safety leads to environments where individuals can thrive. Through collective effort and recognition of every contribution, we build spaces that not only protect us but also inspire confidence and success. Continually valuing safety and reflective practices paves the way for progress, ensuring that every classroom and office remains a secure, nurturing space for all individuals. Superintendent Fellows Visit Sacramento  for Leadership and Civic Engagement by Dr. Ginger Shea, Director of Enrichment & Specialized Programs This April, our  Superintendent Fellows Student Advisory Group  traveled to Sacramento as part of an initiative designed to develop young leaders through civic learning and real-world experiences. Fifth and eighth grade students from Oxnard School District visited the State Capitol, where students met with representatives from Senator Monique Limón’s office to share their ideas and learn about the legislative process. They also had the opportunity to talk about  school beautification  which encourages all  students to advocate for improvements that make their campuses more welcoming and inspiring. The two-day trip also included visits to historic landmarks like Sutter’s Fort, the Sacramento History Museum, and Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma. Students took part in hands-on activities including a scavenger hunt, gold panning, and a trade bead workshop – gaining a deeper appreciation for California’s history and diverse cultures. The experience empowered students to see themselves as changemakers with the ability to positively impact their schools and communities. Supporting the Whole Child:  Mental Health Awareness Month by Dr. Jodi Nocero, Director of Pupil Services Each May, schools across the country recognize  Mental Health Awareness Month – a time to elevate the conversation around emotional well-being and support systems for all students. Within our Oxnard School District, we recognize that fostering mental health is essential to helping every ch ild succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. In our schools, mental health support starts with prevention, education, and connection. Students are developing critical life skills at this age – learning how to manage emotions, build positive relationships, and develop resilience. By introducing mental health education early, we reduce stigma while empowering students with lifelong tools to navigate challenges. Throughout the month, school campuses are engaging students and families through age-appropriate, supportive initiatives, such as: Social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons  embedded into the curriculum Mindfulness and calming strategies  introduced in the classroom School-wide kindness campaigns  and “spirit days” focused on connection These initiatives reflect our district’s broader commitment to creating inclusive, nurturing environments where all students feel safe, valued, and supported. As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, we reaffirm our dedication to the whole child. When students feel well, they learn well – and that benefits us all!   Celebrating the Heart of Our District:  Our Students, Families, and Staff by Scott Carroll, Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources At the heart of our Oxnard School District is a vibrant  community connected by dedication, resilience, and shared desire to create world class outcomes for our students. • OSD Monthly Newsletter March 2025

March Newsletter 2025 (vol. 3, number 7) In this issue: Superintendent Message Education Inspiration at Driffill Black History Speech Exposition Recognizing a Pioneering Woman OSD's Black History Celebration School Beautification Updates Parent Outreach Physical Fitness Testing  National Child Nutrition Month No Place for Hate Reminders: Camps, Registrations Calendar of Events Celebrating Women in Education & Empowering Every Student     “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”  —  Malala Yousafzai Dear Oxnard School District Community,  March is a time of celebration, reflection, and action. As we honor  Women’s History Month , we recognize the  extraordinary contributions of women in education  – those who have shaped history, transformed learning, and paved the way for future generations. From classroom teachers to district leaders, women have been at the forefront of educational change, ensuring that  equity, inclusivity, and excellence  are at the heart of our schools. In  Oxnard EMPOWERs , our commitment remains clear:  we must create spaces that celebrate the uniqueness of every student.  Education is not just about instruction; it is about  empowerment.  It is about ensuring that every learner – regardless of background, language, or ability – feels  valued, seen, and supported  in their journey. As part of our  No Place for Hate initiative , we reaffirm our  zero-tolerance stance against discrimination and bias.  Schools must be places where students feel  safe to be themselves, safe to learn, and safe to dream.  This means actively addressing  bullying, racial and gender bias, and any barriers  that prevent our students from reaching their full potential. This month, we encourage every campus to take time to  amplify student voices, celebrate diverse identities, and promote a culture of belonging.  The true power of education is not just in what we teach but in  how we create spaces where students feel empowered to be their authentic selves. This Women’s History Month, let’s reflect on the incredible women who have shaped education, but let’s also  take action . How are we  ensuring that every student, especially young girls and students from marginalized communities, have the confidence and support  to reach their dreams? I invite our students, families, and educators to: >   Celebrate women leaders in your schools and communities; and, >   Reaffirm your commitment to creating inclusive, hate-free learning spaces. Together, we are not just teaching – we are  empowering.  We are not just leading – we are  creating lasting change.  And most importantly, we are ensuring that  every student knows their voice matters, their identity is valued, and their future is limitless. Thank you for all you do to  inspire, uplift, and empower our students. In partnership, Dr. Anabolena DeGenna,   Superintendent Education  Inspiration at Driffill School by  Javier Tapia, Principal, Driffill School Women have played a crucial role in shaping education, serving as mentors, role models, and advocates for students of all backgrounds. At Driffill School, many of our educators have been inspired by strong women in their own lives and are now making a lasting impact on the next generation. Their dedication and passion for teaching highlight the power of representation and the importance of fostering an inclusive learning environment. One teacher shared how her own fourth-grade teacher served as a guiding light in her decision to pursue education.  "She was someone I looked up to, not only because of how beautiful and confident she was, but also because she made learning fun and exciting. I wanted to be just like her."  This early admiration transformed into a lifelong passion, as she later found herself playing ‘school’ with her younger sisters… unknowingly preparing for the career she would one day embrace. Beyond childhood inspiration, many women in education recognize the significance of representation. As a Hispanic educator, one teacher reflected on how she rarely saw teachers who looked like her while growing up.  "I wanted to be someone that Hispanic boys and girls could look up to and know they could achieve anything."   Her personal experiences as a translator for her mother during school meetings deepened her awareness of the need for educators who could bridge cultural and linguistic gaps. Now, she works to be that relatable and empowering presence for her students and their families. Women in education also face unique challenges as they navigate an ever-evolving profession that is constantly changing with technology. One teacher shared,  "One of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered in my career as an educator has been adapting to the rapid changes in education, particularly with technological advancements. As technology continues to evolve, I’ve had to adjust my teaching style to incorporate new resources; and while it can be challenging at times, it’s also been an opportunity to grow and explore new ways to engage my students." Balancing the demands of work and personal life is another challenge that many female educators face.  "Teaching is a profession that requires a lot of emotional and mental energy, and finding that balance between giving my all to my students  –  while also taking time for myself  –  has been something I’ve had to continuously work on… but I seem to have finally figured out what works for me,"   the teacher explained.  Additionally, the diversity of students in the classroom requires constant adaptation.  "My classroom is filled with a diverse group of students, each with their own unique needs, abilities and backgrounds. Adapting my teaching to ensure that every student feels supported and included can be a challenge, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned to be flexible, to provide individualized support when necessary, and to always keep an open line of communication with my students and their families to ensure everyone thrives." The impact of women in education extends beyond the classroom walls. Teachers strive to instill confidence in their students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, ensuring they feel capable of achieving their dreams.  "My goal is to show them that success is possible, no matter where they come from, and that they can achieve a bright, successful future."  This commitment to empowerment and encouragement is what makes women in education so influential. As we celebrate the contributions of women in education, we acknowledge their resilience, passion, and unwavering dedication to their students. Their influence shapes, not only academic success, but also the personal growth and confidence of the young minds they nurture. Through their work, they continue to inspire, uplift, and create pathways for future generations to thrive.   Black History  Speech Exposition Speech! Speech!   For over four decades, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has proudly hosted the Black History Month Speech Exposition for the Oxnard School District, giving students a platform to honor and celebrate African American history. This year’s event, themed "Straight Outta Oxnard" , featured powerful speeches showcasing the profound influence of notable African Americans throughout history and highlighted famous Black individuals with connections to Oxnard and their lasting impact on our community.    Organized by event chair Mitzi Ivey, the exposition brought together talented students who delivered powerful speeches on influential African Americans. From legendary musicians and groundbreaking athletes — to inspiring activists and motivating educators, the students eloquently shared how these figures shaped history and continue to inspire future generations.   The competition not only encourages students to research and reflect on Black history, but also builds confidence and public speaking skills. Year after year, the event fosters pride, education, and a deeper connection to the legacy of Black excellence — both nationally and locally.   All schools in the Oxnard School District are represented. This year's winners were: 1st place:  Amiah Weaver from Marshall School (6th grader), spotlight on Cerisa House Wesley 2nd place:  Maximo Diaz from Sierra Linda School (5th grader), spotlight on Medgar Evers 3rd place:   Jaylee Gomez from Frank School (6th grader),  spotlight on Ronald McNair " Our grateful appreciation  to Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc. who remains committed to empowering young minds and keeping this tradition alive.  A heartfelt THANK YOU  also  goes out to all the students, educators, and community member who participated and supported this special event. Here's to another year of celebrating history, excellence, and the voices of the future.   Recognizing a Pioneering Woman in Education:  Mary McLeod Bethune by Dr. Scott Carroll, OSD Acting Assistant Superintendent Human Resources As we celebrate Women's History Month, we recognize the incredible impact that women make in our school system every day. For many children, their first teacher is their mother or grandmother. Once students enter our school system, over 75% of educators are female. Today, we highlight one remarkable woman in American educational history:  Mary McLeod Bethune.  Born just after the end of the Civil War, Bethune initially aspired to become a religious missionary. When that path did not work out, she pivoted to education, founding the Daytona Beach Literary and Industrial School, which primarily served children of recently emancipated slaves. Her school continued to grow and, by 1943, had become a degree-granting institution. Beyond education, Bethune was also a successful businesswoman, owning a resort and co-founding the Central Life Insurance Company. She worked closely with Eleanor Roosevelt and served in Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidential cabinet. In 1940, she became vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). While not all of us may have the same far-reaching influence as Mary McLeod Bethune, millions of female educators across the country make a lasting impact on students every day. If you are interested in exploring a career in education, we encourage you to consider the opportunities available within the Oxnard School District! In the words of Mary McLeod Bethune, our OSD educators  "leave you with a thirst for education; knowledge is the prime need of the hour."   For more information about employment opportunities within the Oxnard School District, please visit  www.edjoin.org  and search for "Oxnard School District." An Oxnard student at the annual Black History Month celebration, presents the impact and importance of Mary McLeod Bethune.        OSD's Black History Celebration In collaboration with OSD’s African American Planning Committee and Marshall’s staff, OSD hosted the Third Annual Black History Celebration on February 4th at Thurgood Marshall School. With nearly 40 families in attendance, the evening featured drumming, dancing, a book reading, and dinner, providing a fun and educational way to celebrate the rich African American culture in our community.    Parent Education Opportunities by Karina Lopez, OSD Parent Support Liaison  Project 2 Inspire Classes   English Level 2 classes have begun! February 2025   ( vol. 3, number 6) In this issue: A message from the Superintendent Fostering Kindness in our School Community  Spotlight on Thurgood Marshall School MLK Speech Contest School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive No Place for Hate  Sign Up for Spring Camp Get your Kindergartners Enrolled Now! Technical Wellness at Home   Lunar New Year: Year of the Snake  Calendar of Events A Message from the Superintendent       Dear Oxnard School District Community, As we welcome the month of February, let’s take this opportunity to celebrate love and kindness. This month, I encourage each of you to spread kindness to one another and embrace the powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: "If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way." What better way to honor and celebrate Black History Month than by living out this message — finding small yet meaningful ways to uplift each other? Acts of kindness, no matter how small, create a ripple effect that can transform our schools and our community into a more compassionate, supportive, and inclusive place for all. I want to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for all those who continue to work in the best interest of our students and our community. It is during complex and difficult times that our values of integrity, service, and equity become even more critical. Your dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment make a profound difference in the lives of our students, and for that, I am truly grateful. This commitment to kindness, inclusion, and respect aligns with our district’s  No Place for Hate  initiative. We are dedicated to fostering school environments where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered to succeed. By standing together against hate and discrimination, we strengthen our school communities and uphold the principles of equity and justice that Dr. King so passionately advocated for. Let’s continue to be leaders in promoting a culture of respect and understanding — both in our schools and beyond. As a district, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our students, staff, and families. We remain dedicated to ensuring that our schools are safe, welcoming spaces that foster learning, equity, and excellence. Together, we will continue working to bring the vision of  Oxnard EMPOWERS  to life — empowering our students to Change the world, in school and beyond!  Wishing you a February filled with love, health, and peace.  Warmly, Dr. Anabolena DeGenna,   Superintendent Fostering Kindness, Wellness and Safety in Our School Community by Norma Magaña, OSD Risk Manager As we embrace the new year, the Oxnard School District is proud to highlight the importance of kindness and wellness in our schools and community. In these fast-paced times, small acts of goodwill and a focus on well-being can create a ripple effect of positivity that enriches the lives of everyone around us. This February, let us take a moment to reflect on the values that unite us as a community. Practicing kindness, prioritizing wellness, and ensuring safety are three pillars that can transform our schools and our lives. The Power of Kindness Kindness is more than just a pleasant gesture; it is a powerful tool that strengthens relationships and builds a supportive community. Whether it’s a friendly smile, a helping hand, or words of encouragement, acts of kindness foster a sense of belonging and inclusion. Research shows that kindness boosts mental health by reducing stress and increasing happiness. Let’s encourage our students, staff and families to celebrate  “Random Acts of Kindness Week”  (Feb. 14 - 20) by finding creative ways to spread joy and compassion.   Prioritizing Wellness for All Wellness is the foundation of success. For students, it might mean starting the day with a nutritious breakfast or practicing mindfulness before a test. For staff and families, it includes finding time for self-care amidst busy schedules. By modeling healthy habits, we teach students the importance of balance and self-care. Promoting Safety Together Safety is essential to a thriving school community. By working together, we create a secure environment where everyone feels protected. Following traffic safety rules, driving slowly around schools, practicing drills and reporting hazards are key. Students, staff and families play vital roles in maintaining safety. Thank you for being an integral part of our community. Your commitment to kindness and wellness makes the Oxnard School District a place where everyone can learn, grow, and succeed. Here’s to a year filled with compassion and health!| Thurgood Marshall School -- Celebrating African American Achievements by Chantal Anderson Witherspoon, Principal, Marshall School The month of February is designated to celebrate the many achievements of famous African Americans in our nation’s history. The Thurgood Marshall namesake reflects one African American who inspired many: Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court justice (appointed in 1967).  At Thurgood Marshall School, celebrating and recognizing the accomplishments of African Americans are reflected in the events held on campus in the month of February. This year, Marshall School will host Oxnard School District’s Black History Month celebration on February 4. It will include African drummers and dancers, as well as activities such as crafts related to African culture. It will be a day enjoyed by the Oxnard Community with food, music, dance, and a glimpse at the rich African culture. Marshall School will continue with its tradition of hosting the African American Speech Expo sponsored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on February 22. It will be a showcase of the talent of Oxnard’s stellar student orators. With the theme  “Straight Outta Oxnard”,  5th and 6th graders in the Oxnard School District will research and prepare a speech – on an African American who has made an impact in our community. The display of talent mesmerizes us every year. Keeping with the theme  “Straight Outta Oxnard”,  there are two African Americans from Oxnard with a strong connection and influence on Thurgood Marshall School. The first to mention is  Mr. Albert Duff , who was involved in the building of Marshall School. The time capsule in front of Marshall School is dedicated to Mr. Duff.  Another highly involved and influential African American from Oxnard with a direct connection to Marshall School was  Ernestine Hernandez . Mrs. Hernandez, and the committee she facilitated, were responsible for the selection of Thurgood Marshall quotes that are featured throughout our campus. Thurgood Marshall School, Visual and Performing Arts Academy, was built with strong ties to the Oxnard community, and with the commitment to inspire students to reach their highe st potential – Our Mission.  Our Vision  – to create and maintain a culture of safety, academic success, and a college and career-going mindset for all students.  Thurgood Marshall prides itself on strong partnerships, and the mantra that  “it takes a village”  because it truly does. School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive by  Dr. Jodi Nocero, OSD Director of Pupil Services In February we celebrate National School Counselor Week, but we celebrate our counselors every day for the work they do to support our students, families and staff.  School counselors are more than just educators… they are dedicated advocates, compassionate listeners, and unwavering champions for the success of every student. They help navigate academic, social/emotional and behavior challenges, promote social-emotional growth, and guide our learners toward bright futures. "Thank you to our Oxnard counselors for being a source of continuity for students amidst changes and challenges both inside and outside of school. Your thoughtful encouragement and consistent presence helps students to feel seen and supported. Thank you for reaching beyond the school walls to support families.”  –   Dr. Jodi Nocero Our counselors work to improve school culture through events like Red Ribbon Week, Spirit Weeks, Kindness Week, and more! They provide lessons on social-emotional topics such as: kindness, anti-bullying, being friends, and coping with frustrations. Counselors work with students in groups or individually (as needed) and support our students in many different ways. Thank You to our counselors for their tireless commitment to supporting students, fostering safe and inclusive environments, and empowering families and educators alike. Your work makes a profound difference, and  we are grateful for all you do to help our students thrive. National School Counseling Week will be celebrated from February 3–7 with the theme:  "School Counseling: Helping Students Thrive."  Please take a moment to express your gratitude to our school counselors and recognize the vital role they play in shaping a brighter future for our students and community. “Look to find the helpers” – Fred Rogers No Place For Hate: Inclusion Initiative by  Dr. Jodi Nocero, OSD Director of Pupil Services As our schools progress on their journey to becoming No Place for Hate institutions, students have been introduced to pledges, and school-wide events celebrating unity and kindness have been held. Here are simple ways to promote tech wellness at home: Create Tech-Free Family Time Set aside moments without screens for deeper connections; enjoy meals, play board games, or explore the outdoors together. Establish Boundaries Define clear screen time limits, such as 1-2 hours daily for recreation, and create tech-free zones like bedrooms. Model Healthy Habits Show children balanced tech use by prioritizing breaks, family time and offline hobbies. Foster Open Conversations Talk about online safety, respectful behavior, and the importance of balancing screens with physical activity and sleep. Encourage Offline Interests Support activities like reading, sports and creative projects to enrich your child’s development. Use Technology Wisely Focus on positive uses for technology, such as learning new skills, exploring creative tools, or collaborating on family-friendly projects. In the 21st century, children engage with technology at each stage of development, from toddler to teens and beyond, so it’s important to find a healthy balance for your students.    OSD Love the Bus (& drivers)   by Rita Galván, OSD Director of Transportation    The National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) declares every February as  LOVE THE BUS   month.   As part of the 2025  Love the Bus  campaign, Oxnard School District is excited to celebrate and honor the incredible work of our school bus drivers and transportation staff; these men and women ensure the safety and well-being of our students every day and help to encourage increased attendance by providing transportation to and from school. Love the Bus  month is an opportunity to show gratitude towards the dedicated professionals who ensure the safety of students – on their journey to and from school.  Throughout the month-long celebration, I would like to encourage schools, students, and staff to participate in recognizing the dedication and hard work of our transportation team. The Western world, including the U.S ., typically celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year – which runs from January 29th and concludes with the Lantern Festival on February 12th. This year, 2025, marks the zodiac  Year of the SNAKE .  According to Chinese culture and astrology, the Snake is a cautious, introverted observer, cool and mysterious in behavior owing to their suspicious and insecure nature; yet their armor conceals abundant sensitivity, wisdom, and passion that will surely surprise their few confidants.   CALENDARS FEBRUARY 2025 Black History Month / Love the Bus Month / Lunar New Year (Year of the Snake)  OSD: Specific Feb. 1    Migrant Family Conference  (9 am - 1 pm)  @ Frank  Feb. 4      MLK Celebration (6 pm) @ Marshall Feb. 5      School Board Meeting (7 pm)  @ OSD Board Room   Feb. 6, 7 Student Conferences (minimum days) Feb. 14 & 17 Presidents Day Weekend – NO SCHOOL Feb. 19 School Board Meeting (7 pm)  @ OSD Board Room Feb. 22 AKA Speech Competition  (1 - 4 pm) @ Marshall School    February: Observances Feb. 3 - 7  National School Counseling Week MARCH 2025 National Women’s History Month; Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month OSD: Specific March 3   District PD Day  (No school for students) March 5   School Board Mtg (7 pm) OSD Board Room March 7   Pre-K, Kindergarten Admissions Paperwork due   March 19  School Board Mtg (7 pm) OSD Board Room     March: Observances      March 2   Read Across America Day March 3 - 7   National School Breakfast Week  March 31  Cesar Chavez Day     IGNITE. As we step into 2025, I am excited to share some of the initiatives and developments happening across our schools this month. The heartwarming initiative, made possible through generous donations, ensured that every child experienced the joy of the season.     With the collective efforts of our community, toys, books, clothing, and other thoughtful items were carefully selected, wrapped and distributed to students. These gifts not only brought smiles to the children’s faces - - but also conveyed a message of hope and support during the festive season. The success of this initiative highlights the power of unity and compassion.  Staff members volunteered their time and resources, while families contributed what they could to make a meaningful difference. Each donation reflected the community’s unwavering commitment to supporting local students and creating lasting memories for families. As we look back on this special season, we are reminded of the importance of giving back and uplifting those around us. The outpouring of generosity has brought joy to many and strengthened our bond as a community. Together, we have made the holidays a little brighter for the children in Oxnard, showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big impact.   OSD Empowers:  Brightening Our Schools, Uniting Our Community!   By Dr. Ginger Shea, Director of Enrichment & Specialized Programs OSD Empowers: Brightening Our Schools, Uniting Our Community Initiative aims to: enhance the physical environment of Oxnard School District (OSD) campuses; foster stronger relationships between schools and the community; and create a sense of ownership and pride among staff, students and families. • OSD Monthly Newsletter- December 2024

Newsletter: December 2024   ( vol. 3, number 4) In this issue: A message from the Superintendent Wildfire Update: Staying Safe this Fire Season  Honoring Lydia Lugo Dominguez The Heritage, History of McKinna School  Celebrating Cultural Holidays Technology Tips: Winter Edition Calendar of Events A Message from the Superintendent       Dear Oxnard School District Community, As we embrace this holiday season, my warmest wishes go out to each of you. December brings a time for reflection, joy, and connection with the people who mean the most to us. I hope this month offers you precious moments with family, friends, and loved ones, filling your days with laughter, warmth, and gratitude. I am especially thankful for our incredible staff, dedicated volunteers, and wonderful students who bring so much to our schools each day. Your commitment, passion, and hard work make our schools truly special places to learn, grow, and thrive. Each of you contributes in countless ways, helping to create an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired. I am grateful for the heart and energy you pour into our school community, making it a place of hope, joy, and endless possibility. This season, we celebrate not only the holidays but also our shared journey as a “ No Place for Hate”  district. Together, we are building a culture of love, understanding, and inclusivity across our schools. Many of you have already started working with your school communities to bring this message of kindness and unity into the lives of our students, and I am deeply moved by your efforts. I invite you to stay connected and involved as we continue this meaningful work. Reach out to your child’s teacher, principal, counselor, ORC, or any member of our dedicated staff to discover how you can be part of our campaign to  Brighten our Schools and Strengthen our Community.  Our  “No Place for Hate”  commitment is more than a message — it is a movement that unites us all, creating a more compassionate and welcoming environment for everyone. With gratitude and warm holiday wishes from our OSD family to yours, Dr. Anabolena DeGenna,  Superintendent Staying Safe During Wildfire Season    Norma  Magaña,  Risk Manager As we gather with loved ones this season, it’s important to remember that wildfire safety is a priority for many families — especially in regions prone to fires. By taking proactive steps to protect our homes and embracing a mindset of gratitude, we can navigate these challenging times with resilience. Wildfire Safety Tips for Families Create a Family Evacuation Plan:  Make sure every family member knows the evacuation routes and a designated meeting spot.  Practice your plan regularly to ensure everyone is prepared. Prepare a “Go Bag”:  Have an emergency kit ready with essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, a first-aid kit, and personal items.  Store it in an easily accessible place. Defensible Space:  Protect your home by clearing dry leaves, dead plants, and debris from around your property.  Trim tree branches and keep them at least 10 feet away from your home and roof. Stay Informed:  Sign up for emergency notification system VC ALERT at  www.vcalert.org  or  www.vcrecovers.org  to stay updated on wildfire conditions and evacuation notices.  Keep a battery-powered radio on hand in case of power outages. Embracing Gratitude Amidst Challenges During times of uncertainty, practicing gratitude can be a powerful way to find peace and strengthen family bonds. A grateful mindset not only improves emotional well-being but also helps us stay resilient in the face of adversity.   Here are a few ways to cultivate gratitude: Focus on What You Have:  Encourage each family member to share something they’re thankful for, even during difficult times. This can shift the focus from fear to appreciation. Gratitude Journal:  Start a family gratitude journal where everyone can write down one thing they’re grateful for each day. Reflecting on these entries can bring comfort and positivity. Support Your Community:  Extend your gratitude by helping neighbors who may be impacted by wildfires. Small acts of kindness, like sharing resources or offering support, can make a big difference. Let’s focus on keeping our families safe and our hearts full of gratitude.  By taking the necessary precautions and cherishing the simple joys, we can turn challenging times into moments of connection and appreciation. Recognizing Lydia Lugo Dominguez for Outstanding Administrative Support Lydia Lugo Domínguez  is the Executive Assistant to our district’ s Superintendent, Dr. DeGenna -- and as such, Lydia has a pulse on everything  happening around the Oxnard School District and its schools. Keeping the celebrations, events and schedules in order for OSD, Lydia was recognized last month for her outstanding work.  On November 15, The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) celebrated just 26 exemplary education leaders throughout the entire state. Lydia was recognized for her dedication to her job, to the office of the superintendent and all the teachers, staff and students she helps to serve throughout the district.   Lydia has been a part of the Oxnard community since she was 10 years old. As a student, she attended Elm, Sierra Linda, and Lopez schools. In 1990, Lydia began her career at OSD and held positions in Educational Services, Pupil Services, Child Nutrition Services, and Business & Fiscal Services before becoming the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent  —  first alongside Dr. Aguilera-Fort and now with Dr. DeGenna.   “I absolutely enjoy supporting my colleagues that serve the community in which my siblings and I grew up, in which I raised my children, and where my grandchildren are now being raised,”   Lydia said.   “As a district, Oxnard is amazing because of our diversity and our hard working community. As a city, Oxnard is a great place to live and work because it is picturesque and, though it’s grown, still retains the feel of a small town community.” We are so lucky to have Lydia as part of our Oxnard School District family!   Lydia was nominated by her peers for the 2024 ACSA recognition. She has been recognized on a regional level  (May 2024) ; honored by the South Ventura chapter (June 2024) ; and is now part of a small club of statewide honorees.  The Association of California Administrators (formed in 1971) is the largest umbrella organization for school leaders in the United States -- serving more than 17,000 California educators in 19 regions throughout the state.   Recognizing an OSD Elementary School...  and the McKinna Man behind the Name Erika Ragan,  McKinna Elementary School Principal On Wednesday, October 30th, McKinna Elementary School welcomed special guests from the family of Dennis McKinna -- after whom our school is named. Our honored visitors inc luded Peggy McKinna (Dennis McKinna’s daughter-in-law) along with his grandchildren, Kelly and Scott. During their visit, our guests shared historical insights about Dennis McKinna’s life and legacy. Born in Mobile, Alabama on September 19, 1905, Mr. McKinna later became a dedicated member of the Oxnard community until his passing in 1987. He attended Oxnard High School and went on to a career in banking with the Bank of A. Levy. Known for his commitment to youth programs, including the Boys and Girls Club, Mr. McKinna’s dedication inspired the naming of our school in his honor. Mr. McKinna was actively involved with the Oxnard School District, serving as a board member from 1942 to 1954, and he also served on the Oxnard High School Board. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Kiwanis Club, where he served as president.  Dennis McKinna married Margarett Edith Wheeler, who later worked as an assistant librarian with Emilie Ritchen at the Oxnard Public Library. Together, they had two children, Michael and Tim. Michael’s wife, Peggy, and their children, Scott and Kelly, expressed how impressed they were with McKinna School and believed that Dennis McKinna would be immensely proud of the school and the incredible work happening here today. McKinna Elementary School, Academy of Multimedia is a DLI school -- where all students continue to learn English and Spanish in every grade, from TK-5th. The vision of McKinna School is to develop empathetic digital learners who are biliterate, critical thinkers and creative problem solvers.   Celebrating Cultural Holidays  Brings Our Community Together Allison Cordes, Director of Teaching & Learning At Oxnard School District, we take pride in the diversity of our community, enriched by the unique backgrounds, cultures, and traditions of our staff. Our Human Resources Department celebrates the special ways our team members honor their heritage, connect with loved ones, and carry on meaningful traditions like Dia de Muertos, Thanksgiving, winter celebrations and more.   Santa’s Helpers: Giving Back to Families in Need During the holiday season, our HR/Risk Management team serves as  “Santa’s Helpers”   in partnership with the County of Ventura Human Services Agency’s Adopt-A-Family (AAF) Program. Many families face difficult decisions about whether to cover essential expenses or buy food and gifts to make the holidays special for their children. Through the generosity of our donors, we help alleviate this financial burden -- ensuring a joyful and “normal” holiday for families who have endured so much over the past year. Together, we aim to bring comfort and celebration to our community during this special season. Preparing for a Smooth Winter Session  -- with your Student’s Technology As winter settles in, the IT department is excited to share some updates, tips, and resources for a smooth winter season!    Tech Readiness for Winter Break  Planning to take devices home? • National School Bus Safety Week Oct. 21-25

National School Bus Safety Week, observed from October 21-25, 2024, is a critical time to remind students, parents, and drivers of the importance of school bus safety. This week focuses on promoting awareness of safe practices while riding, boarding, and exiting school buses, as well as reinforcing the need for drivers to be cautious and alert when sharing the road with buses.   Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind:   For Drivers: Be aware of the "flashing signal light system" used by school buses: Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop, and red flashing lights and an extended stop arm indicate students are getting on or off the bus. Always stop when the school bus has its stop arm extended and red lights flashing, no matter which direction you're traveling in (unless you're on the opposite side of a divided highway). Slow down in school zones and near bus stops, and be prepared for children to enter or exit the bus unexpectedly.   For Parents: Teach your children the importance of bus safety, including following the driver's instructions and respecting other students. Be aware of your child’s bus schedule and remind them of safe behavior at the bus stop. Arrive at the bus stop early, and wait in a safe place away from traffic. Always wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it. Use handrails when boarding or exiting the bus, and avoid any rush to prevent tripping. Cross the street only when the bus driver signals it's safe, and always look both ways. Stay seated while the bus is in motion, and avoid distracting the driver.   School buses are one of the safest modes of transportation for students, and everyone plays a role in maintaining this safety record. Let's work together to ensure the well-being of our children as they travel to and from school!

  • OSD Monthly Newsletter-OCTOBER 2024

NEWSLETTER: OCT.   2024   (vol. 3, issue 2) In This Issue Superintendent Message HR Update: Staff Additions & Safety Measures Cybersecurity and Digital Citizenship Positive Behavior Recognition Celebrating Our Custodial Teams Kamala School: A Focus on Goals & Outcomes October & November Calendar Dates A Message from the Superintendent As we enter October, our focus is on safety.  October is a month dedicated to safety in schools including America's Safe Schools Week, Cybersecurity Week and National Bullying Prevention Month. Ensuring a safe environment for students and staff remains a top priority, and this month we emphasize how  each member of our community contributes to a se cure, welcoming atmosphere  –  both on campus and online . I’m excited to share that our district has partnered with the Anti-Defamation League to implement the  *No Place for Hate*  campaign. This initiative empowers students to take the lead in promoting respect and fostering a culture where every student feels valued. Through student-led activities, we are building safer, more inclusive school environments that reflect the district’s commitment to kindness and unity.   Similar to other school districts throughout the state and the country, we recently faced social media threats; while these threats were vague, they understandably caused concern in our school community. We immediately worked with local law enforcement to investigate and respond. I want to thank our families, staff and law enforcement partners for their quick actions and collaboration. We take any potential threat seriously and the safety of our students is always our top priority.   When we receive information about any threats or safety concerns, we are committed to keeping you informed. You will receive timely updates through email, phone and / or our district website outlining the steps we are taking to protect our schools.  Your support is crucial in maintaining a safe and secure environment for everyone, and we appreciate your partnership in this effort.   Sincerely,   Dr. Ana DeGenna   Superintendent,  Oxnard School District   HR UPDATE:  Staff Additions & Safety Measures The OSD Human Resources department is thrilled to announce the hiring of over 80 new teachers, psychologists, and speech pathologists for the 2024-2025 school year. Our new staff members are already making a positive impact across all OSD school sites, working closely with students and families to support their growth and well-being. Additional Resources   Kids' Guide to Online Safety: https://www.staysafeonline.org   Family Media Agreement: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ family-media-agreement   National Cybersecurity Alliance: https://staysafeonline.org To further enhance safety across the district, we’ve implemented the following measures with the help of our Risk Management department: Safety First: Fire Prevention Week  (October 6 - 12, 2024) Fire Prevention Week is fast approaching! This is when we refresh our fire safety practices and ensure everyone is prepared: reviewing fire evacuation plans, conducting drills, inspecting fire safety equipment and keeping work areas clutter-free. AEDs & Trauma Kits: Enhancing Safety   We’re excited to announce the installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and Bleeding Control Trauma Kits at every school and district location. These life-saving tools will enable us to respond swiftly in case of emergencies. Training will be provided to all staff soon  –  ensuring that everyone is equipped with the knowledge to use these tools effectively.      Annual Safety Training   The safety of our students is always at the forefront of everything we do.  All staff members participate in mandatory, annual professional development on crucial topics: such as, recognizing child abuse, anti-harassment strategies, suicide prevention and bullying prevention. In recent years, staff have also undergone extensive training to better respond to incidents of violence and threats. On behalf of the Human Resources team, we thank you for trusting us with your student's care and education. Together, we're building a safer, brighter future for every OSD student.   Cybersecurity and Digital Citizenship: A Guide for K - 8 Families October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month  – an ideal time for students and families to focus on online safety. As technology becomes a bigger part of our daily lives, from schoolwork to socializing, it's essential to be aware of risks and practice safe online habits. Here's how you can help protect your child online: Protect Your Personal Information    Teach children the dangers of sharing personal information online. They should never disclose their full name, address, phone number or school without your permission.   Use Strong Passwords    Help your child create strong, unique passwords using a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.   Beware of Cyberbullying    Cyberbullying can occur on social media, games or messaging apps. Teach your child to report harmful behavior and always treat others kindly online.  Think Before You Post      Remind your child that digital footprints are permanent. Encourage them to think carefully before posting anything online.    Watch Out for Scams and Phishing    Phishing scams can trick anyone into sharing personal information. Teach your child not to click on suspicious links or provide information to people they don’t know.   Monitor Screen Time and Online Behavior   Set boundaries for screen time and discuss responsible use of technology.   Practice Good Digital Citizenship    Encourage your child to be respectful and responsible online.   By working together, we can help students build safe, positive online habits and become responsible digital citizens!   Positive Behavior Program,  Making an Impact Keeping our tradition of excellence in education, Oxnard School District is committed to fostering a positive and safe learning environment. One of the key frameworks we utilize to achieve this is Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) complemented by the vital role of our School Resource Officers (SROs). PBIS is a proactive approach that focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors. By establishing clear expectations and providing support, we aim to create a culture where students feel safe, respected and ready to learn. Research shows that schools implementing a PBIS program reduced disciplinary incidents and improved school climate. Our district has engaged in trainings – focused on PBIS and developing strategies and supports to create positive and safe environments for students, staff and families. By focusing on prevention rather than punishment  (alongside the supportive presence of our SROs ) we create a safe space where students can thrive academically and socially. As we continue to integrate PBIS into our daily practices and collaborate with our SROs, we invite you to join us in fostering a positive school culture. Let’s work together to keep each of our schools a safe haven for all our students. In October, we're excited to join some national programs aimed at increasing the health and safety of our students everyday. Red Ribbon Week , a nationwide campaign, encourages a drug-free lifestyle and the adoption of positive, healthy choices. Schools across the district will host events to inspire students to make healthy choices and stay drug-free. Be sure to check in with your child’s school to learn about the specific activities planned for this month!   October is also  National Bullying Prevention Month : a time dedicated to raising awareness about bullying and exploring how we can collectively take action to prevent it. Throughout the month, students, staff and families will have the chance to participate in a variety of activities designed to promote kindness, respect and inclusivity. Celebrating Our  Custodial  Teams October 2nd  marks the N ational  Custodial Worker's Recognition Day...  a time to recognize the often unsung heroes of our school district who work tirelessly to create a safe, clean and welcoming environment for both students and staff. Our custodial teams are not only responsible for maintaining the physical cleanliness of our campuses – but also play a crucial role in ensuring the health, safety, and overall well-being of our school community. Custodial staff members are on the front lines every day: disinfecting classrooms, restrooms, and common areas – which is critical for preventing the spread of illness and maintaining a healthy learning environment. In addition to daily cleaning duties, they are also prepared to address emergencies, such as spills or weather-related incidents, which could pose hazards to both students and staff. As we celebrate National Custodial Worker's Recognition Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to  THANK these dedicated professionals for their hard work and commitment.  Their efforts to create a well-maintained environment encourages school pride and provides a safe space for students to learn, play, and grow.    Kamala School:  A Focus on Goals & Outcomes By Brian Blevins, Kamala School Principal  At Kamala School, staff, students and families work together to accomplish our three goals: (1) dramatically accelerate academic achievement,  (2) create a positive school culture, and  (3) form a partnership with families and the community.   Our top priority is ensuring every student achieves academic success.  We are committed to  teaching   grade-level standards, teaching biliteracy, analyzing student data with formative assessments, writing with intention across the curriculum, and encouraging students to collaboratively problem solve.    In addition, we   closely  monitor student progress and offer personalized support to help each child reach their full potential.   Second, we are dedicated to fostering a welcome, respectful and safe environment where students have a voice and feel a sense of belonging.  We continue to build community through our Tiger-Cub program, Tiger Ticket weekly raffles, Challenge of the Month, monthly Character Trait, welcome music in the morning, staff vs. students sports events, and much more! Our school is committed to these activities that promote kindness, respect and responsibility.   Lastly, we believe that  a strong partnership between the families and the school is key to student success.  Our goal is to create as many opportunities (as possible) for families to be involved in their student’s education. Through workshops  –   such as Disciplina Positiva and Healthy Start Parent Workshops,  family nights such as  Fiestas Patrias and Cinco de Mayo, community walks like the Beginning of the Year Parade and the “Kermes,”  and regular communication through  ParentSquare   –  our partnership strives to ensure families feel informed, supported, and actively engaged.     With a focus and emphasis on these three goals on a daily basis, we strive to make this school year a success for all students. We keep all this in mind as we stand by our motto: " It’s always a great day to be a Tiger!  "We believe in You!” CALENDAR of EVENTS OCTOBER 2024 Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month,  National Bullying Prevention Month, California School Bus Safety Month, Learning Disabilities Awareness Month OSD Specific  Oct. 2          Board Meeting, 7 pm (OSD Board Room) Oct. 11         Chromebook Insurance Portal closes; for 6, 7 & 8 graders Oct. 14         Site / Professional Development Day  (no students)  Oct. 16         Board Meeting, 7 pm (OSD Board Room) Observances Oct. 2             Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day Oct. 13 - 19     Week of the School Administrator Oct. 16            Principal Boss's Day Oct. 17           The Great Shakeout  ( ea rthquake awareness) Oct. 20 - 26   America’s Safe Schools Week Oct.  23 - 31     Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24           Lights On After School Oct. 31           Halloween   NOVEMBER 2024 National Native American Heritage Month  OSD Specific   Nov. 1                District PD Day  (no students) Nov. 6               Board Meeting, 7 pm (OSD Board Room) Nov. 19 - 22      Conference Days   (minimum days for students) Nov. 20             Board Meeting, 7 pm (OSD Board Room) Nov. 25 - 29     Thanksgiving holiday (no school)  Observances Nov. 4 - 8          National School Psychology Week Nov. 11               Veterans Day Holiday (no school)  Nov. 14             National Literacy Day Nov. 18 - 22      American Education Week Nov. 20             Education Support Professionals Day IGNITE.
