Spotlight On Education: November 2025
Spotlight On Education Brownsburg Schools' Newsletter - November 2025 STATE CHAMPS! After falling short in the semifinals as sophomores last year, BHS juniors Ethan Cougill and Skyler Rose stormed back claimed Brownsburg's first-ever State Title in tennis! This dynamic duo won all of their state finals matches in straight sets, defeating Columbus North in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-0, Penn in the semifinals 7-5, 6-2, and then rolled to the State Title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over a team from Culver Academies. Congratulations to Ethan, Skyler, their families and their coaches! Family-Teacher Partnerships Evident in Conference Data One important key to student growth is the collaboration between teachers and families. Parent-Teacher Conferences are typically very well attended in Brownsburg, and this year was no exception. We are grateful for the time that families put into these partnerships and the commitment they make to supporting their students! USTA vs UTR tournaments explained. Long version.
Good morning, I have been receiving several questions about tournaments and how they operate. Here is the extended version: USTA (United States Tennis Association) is trying to use the WTN (World Tennis Number) to provide tournaments and rankings. The WTN number is a new system and is currently widely known to be unreliable. Most coaches and clubs are not using a player's WTN to recruit for college tennis because of its inaccuracy. This is a free service for junior tennis, and the cost to enter a tournament is based on what is published by the tournament. The UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) was introduced in 2008 because the USTA's ranking system was outdated, unreliable, and did not effectively utilize the internet . UTR is essentially the only accurate ranking system currently available and is used by every indoor tennis club to place players in classes. UTR offers a membership that can be purchased for $99 annually, which reduces the cost of entering UTR tournaments by eliminating service fees. UTR rankings range from 1.00 to 16.00. Our best player in Brownsburg history was an 11.00 when he graduated. Big Ten players are 11+. I want our teams (7 players) to have UTRs of 5.0 or higher. My goal has been to bring competition to Brownsburg through numerous tournaments this summer. My plan has faced a few setbacks this summer, including road construction, a lack of running water (which is unsafe), and general difficulties with using both the USTA and UTR systems. Why play a tournament? There are a few reasons. 1. Test yourself. Playing tennis is the best way to gauge your actual abilities and identify areas for improvement in lessons and clinics. I believe that a tennis player should participate in a tournament at least once a month (35-50 matches per year) and then utilize clinics and lessons to assess and correct any issues that arise from playing. This is the model that has developed every State Champion in 50 years, and it is very similar to learning music, dance, or most sports. You practice, perform, and then learn how to correct and refine your performance. The lessons you take should be directly linked to your past or upcoming performance. Taking lessons can teach you to play, but the most impactful lessons are those based on past performances. 2. To get into a winter tennis clinic in an indoor club. I hear from many of you that your clinics are not satisfactory, and you would like to be in a higher clinic. Many of you call your coaches who work at indoor clubs, and try to get them to move you up to a better clinic. This isn't easy for them and puts them in a challenging position in their club. A better solution is to play in tournaments and earn a higher ranking so that you can "prove" your abilities. This will reduce the pressure you put on your coaches, parents, and yourself to prove your worth. Truly, the only reason I am hosting tournaments at Brownsburg is to help this community access better year-round training at an indoor club, as it can lead to improved outcomes when done correctly. In 50 years of IHSAA Boys and Girls Tennis, Marion is the only team to have won a championship without an indoor tennis club within a 6-mile radius. The catch with USTA and UTR is that a UTR score will not impact your WTN/USTA ranking , but all USTA scores are factored into your UTR . So, if UTR is the best ranking system and the most used by coaches/clubs, then why would you play a USTA tournament? The USTA still maintains a points-based system, which is the key to qualifying for the USTA National Championships and the Clay Courts. So, if you are interested in playing tennis at the highest USTA levels, then you still need ranking points to enter those tournaments. Types of tournaments: Matchplay or USTA Level 7 : Typically, the lowest level and the shortest duration. UTR-level tournaments or USTA Level 6: Typically, a two-day event with a higher barrier to entry. Possibly smaller draws with more ranked players applying. USTA level 5 and up : Almost impossible to get into unless you have a UTR of 7 or enough USTA points. Other options: I am very committed to making tournament tennis fun and exciting. Dynamic Duos is an excellent option for singles and doubles to move on together. Doubles and Mixed Doubles are always fun. Small Flighted tournaments are often a way to make sure you get more even competition and bang for your buck. The schedule for a tournament can be hard to predict. If the tournament has many entries and is full, you could spend your whole weekend at the tennis courts. If the tournament is a one-day event, you can expect to spend 5-6 hours. This can change up to the start of a tournament. Tournaments are vital for a player, but they can also be challenging and time-consuming. I did not travel to tournaments in the 1990s, and do not believe you need to in 2025 either. Using PATC, Healthplex, West Indy, Avon, and Brownsburg, you can become a great player. I am fortunate to have experienced my journey and witnessed the journeys of thousands of players and families over the past 30 years. I want to do my part to make tennis as enjoyable and painless as possible. Please remember that during a tournament, you are not allowed to talk to your player during their matches. Tournament tennis is the most regulated type of tennis because it has rankings. You are always allowed to be encouraging, but the line is very thin and can be punative. Thanks for reading.

BHS Construction and Renovation - Looking Ahead to 2...
April 21, 2025 The BCSC Construction Newsletter is shared periodically when there is an update to the current projects underway at Brownsburg Schools. This newsletter focuses on the BHS renovation and expansion project and is being shared with all BHS families and any subscribers to this newsletter. Opening Dates for New Construction Areas At Monday's (4/14) BCSC School Board meeting, it was shared that many of the new areas under construction at BHS will open AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. The updated Senior Academy facility (which includes an upgraded cafeteria) and the new Fieldhouse will now be open in time for the start of the 25-26 school year. The initial estimates saw these areas opening in October of 2025. In addition, the BHS football field will be complete in time for BHS Team 2025's Commencement on June 7. Work on the reconfigured entrance to the football facility will start after graduation. The area north of the of the football field will be ready for the next school year as well. This multipurpose field is PE and practices for band and football. This space will also be used for lacrosse and possibly soccer (if they need to play on turf due to weather). This replaces the green space that was lost with the construction of the new student parking lot in 2023. Click below to watch BHS-TV's latest construction update CLICK HERE Bleachers at the new multipurpose field are being constructed (top or left). The new fieldhouse with 4 basketball courts and an indoor track & field facility (bottom or right) IMPACTED AREAS - SUMMER 2025 IMPACTED PROGRAMS, SPACE, AND ACTIVITIES Parking for events in the Varsity Gymnasium and Auditorium will continue to be at door #6 and in the softball lot across from door #1 & 15B. The Senior Academy remains closed for the remainder of this school year. After graduation, the entry to door #1 will be reconfigured for parking and entry. This is being done to relocate construction equipment for the interior renovations that continue at BHS. BUILDING ACCESS All building entries at the north end of the building remain closed for now, including doors 9, 11, 12, 14, and 15. STUDENT PARKING Student drivers will continue to park in their assigned lots and utilize the fenced walking path through the remainder of this school year. Changes to that process for 25-26 will be communicated in July. VISITOR PARKING Visitor parking remains available in front of the building near door 1 during the school day. Most after school events will utilize door #6 and park in the bus lot off of Sycamore Dr. STAFF PARKING No changes for this school year POSSIBLE SERVICES AFFECTED No services will be affected PICK UP / DROP OFF No changes. The pick up and drop off line continues on the west side of the building and cars enter from Tilden. PHASES OF WORK Phase 4 (set to be completed before the start of the 25-26 school year): What: The renovation and expansion of the Senior Academy, and the Fieldhouse addition, will increase the number of teaching stations at Brownsburg High School by 25%, from 177 to 221, meeting the educational needs of a continually growing student enrollment. Renovation and expansion of the Senior Academy, which opened in 2009, will include replacement of heating and ventilating equipment, relocation of the main entry providing a better, more secure entry*, and replacement of the 14-year-old finishes and equipment in the building. A new kitchen and dining room* will be constructed to provide a better breakfast and lunch service to BHS seniors. The Fieldhouse* will include a multipurpose facility including an eight-lane indoor track and four basketball courts. Exterior work includes expanded student, staff, and visitor parking, and improved parent drop-off and pick-up lines. Why: The Senior Academy has reached its enrollment capacity and is the last part of the HS to be renovated and expanded, creating a facility with an enrollment capacity of over 4,000 students in grades 9 through 12. Current parking and drop-off/pick-up facilities are also at capacity and require expansion and reconfiguration. ***NEW: Expected to be completed before the start of the 2025-2026 school year. Phase 5: (Part 1 complete, Part 2 set to be complete before the start of the 25-26 school year) What: The BHS tennis courts have been relocated to the open area in the southwest quadrant of the intersection of Odell Street and Airport Road. A total of 15 courts have been completed (one pictured above). Six additional varsity courts and a restroom and locker room facility are now under construction south of the new courts. (progress pictured above) Why: The previous location of the tennis courts are now being used for additional student and staff parking and space for the expanded parent drop-off/pick-up loop. Work will be completed on the entire tennis court footprint in summer 2025. Phase 6: What: A new multipurpose field that will be utilized by many BHS activities is now being constructed north of the varsity football field. The varsity football field is undergoing renovations to expand the bleacher seating and reconfigure the main entrance. The bleacher and field work will be completed before BHS Team 2025 Commencement on June 7. The reconfiguration of the entrance to the football field will be completed in time for the fall football and marching band seasons in 2025. Why: The large multipurpose field on the north end of the BHS campus was displaced by the new student parking lot in the fall of 2023. With the addition of the BHS fieldhouse, the main entrance of the varsity football field will be reconfigured to bring foot traffic directly in from the main parking area behind the press box. Additional seating is also being added at the varsity football field to accommodate the large crowds at events in this space. WHAT'S NEXT Phase 7: What: The varsity gymnasium, which opened in 2001, will be renovated with new finishes and bleachers. A new second floor connection will be made between the main building and the Senior Academy to allow students to reach the north end of the building on both first and second floors. Other interior renovations will take place in the classrooms surrounding the varsity gym. Why: The bleachers and finishes in the varsity gymnasium have reached the end of their service life. Circulation of students on both first and second floors will allow better movement of students, staff, and visitors through the 4,000-student capacity building. Plans are to begin when the new Fieldhouse is completed (summer 2025), it will be phased to minimize the impact to school events and completed in the fall of 2026. COMPLETE Phase 1 COMPLETE: What: The county drainage ditch running across the north end of the Brownsburg High School site is being relocated and piped to allow for expanded parking, drives, and building additions. The large pile of earth at the corner of Odell and Tilden is a result of the trench being dug for the underground piping being installed; once the new pipe is operational, the stockpiled earth will be used to fill the old open ditch. Why: The ditch, which is controlled by the Hendricks County Drainage Board and drains storm water from neighborhoods north and east of the High School, did not allow for future development of the High School in its previous location. Completed late August 2023. Phase 2 COMPLETE: What: Replacement of the North P.E. Building. Why: The existing north building, which was a metal “barn” structure, is being replaced with a larger, more durably constructed building that will temporarily serve as locker room space for the varsity football team during construction of the Fieldhouse (see Phase 4) and will provide visitor locker, concession, and restroom facilities for the long term. The new building needed to be constructed in advance of the Senior Academy and Fieldhouse to provide continuity of services during that project. Completed late August 2023. Phase 3 COMPLETE: What: Renovation of the Brownsburg High School Pool facility. Why: The BHS pool, which opened in 2003, has been in need of significant renovations to the 20-year-old facility. The project includes expansion of the pool from eight to ten lanes, reconstruction of the locker room facilities, replacement of all pool filtration systems, and reconfiguration of the spectator seating area to expand capacity. Heating, cooling, dehumidification, air circulation, and air filtration systems have also been improved. Completed October 2024.
