Hornet Blast Love Where You Learn: Beech Grove City Schools March 14, 2025 SPRING BREAK 2025 Have a safe and relaxing break! Beech Grove City Schools will be on Spring Break from Monday, March 17th, through Friday, March 28th! Please note: 🏫 The Administration Office will be closed during the first week (March 17–21). 🏫 We will reopen during the second week (March 24–28). We hope everyone enjoys a restful and fun break! Remembering Jeff Gregory: A Legacy of Kindness, Dedication, and Impact Our hearts are heavy as we grieve the loss of a beloved member of our Beech Grove family, Mr. Jeff Gregory. A dedicated physical education teacher at Beech Grove Middle School, Jeff was so much more than an educator—he was a mentor, a coach, a friend, and a constant source of encouragement for his students and colleagues alike. His impact on our school and community was immeasurable, and his absence will be deeply felt. In moments of loss, we are reminded of the power of community. As I have heard stories about Jeff from his colleagues and friends, it is clear he lived his life with kindness, generosity, and a commitment to lifting others up. He taught us that showing up for one another, leading with a servant’s heart, and spreading joy in the smallest of moments can transform lives. His legacy is a call to action for all of us—to be better, love harder, and serve more. Let us honor Jeff’s memory by embodying the very values he exemplified: compassion, dedication, and a deep love for the people around us. Let us lift each other up, support one another, and continue building a community where every person feels seen, valued, and cared for. Most importantly, we extend our deepest sympathy and love to Jeff’s family. We hope they find comfort in knowing how profoundly he was loved and how far his influence reached. His impact will never fade, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. District News Don't Miss our 2nd Annual FREE Community Dinner! Please RSVP below before April 4th! Catch the Latest Buzz in This Week’s Hornet Blast!
Hornet Blast February 28, 2025 All Day, Every Day: Prioritizing Attendance for Student Success We love having your children at school all day, every day! As we push through the final stretch of winter, we know that cold and flu season, along with unpredictable weather, can make attendance a challenge. Snow, cold, and illness have impacted many of our students, and we certainly understand that when children are sick, they need time to recover. Even excused absences disrupt the routine of daily learning and can make it harder for students to stay engaged and connected. That’s why, when students are well, attending school all day, every day is the most important thing they can do for their success. The State of Indiana has introduced new attendance requirements, and we want to applaud our families for stepping up to meet these expectations. We have seen improved attendance across the district, and your commitment makes a real difference in student learning and achievement. As we approach the final quarter of the school year, let’s continue that momentum! To help keep your children healthy and in school, here are a few important reminders: Talk to a medical provider or school nurse if your child is feeling unwell and you’re unsure whether they should stay home. Additionally, handwashing, avoiding shared cups and utensils, dressing appropriately for the weather, and getting enough sleep all help prevent illness. If you need help with winter clothing or other resources, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you and your children every step of the way. Thank you for your ongoing partnership—we are so grateful for our Beech Grove families! Let’s finish the school year strong by prioritizing attendance all day, every day! This helps prevent the spread of illness and ensures they return to school ready to learn. At the same time, attendance matters! Hornet Blast February 14, 2025 No school on Monday, February 17, due to Presidents' Day. Have a wonderful 3-day weekend! Beech Grove Connect: Uniting Schools and Community Through Engagement At Beech Grove City Schools, we believe in the power of community engagement, and this year, we launched a new initiative that has brought us closer than ever to our families and community members. The “Beech Grove Connect” program builds bridges between our schools and the community through an enriching “Lunch and Learn” series. Our mission for “Beech Grove Connect” has been clear: to provide our school community with a comprehensive, transparent view of all that is happening within our district. Through open dialogue and engagement, we have created an opportunity for community members to gain deeper insights into the programs, initiatives, and events shaping the educational experiences of our students. Throughout the year, participants have explored a range of important topics, including school finance and funding, early childhood education, our multilingual learner program, exceptional learner services, the science of reading, mental health support, bullying prevention programming, and career-ready student supports. One of the highlights was learning about the Beech Grove Middle School Student-Run Business, “We Before Me,” a remarkable program that equips our students with real-world skills. As we near the conclusion of our first year, our participants will soon graduate from the program by engaging in presentations centered on Beech Grove High School programs, showcasing the exceptional opportunities available to our students. We look forward to continuing this initiative in the years to come. If you are interested in participating in next year’s program, we would love to have you join us! Please reach out to me at lhammack@bgcs.k12.in.us for more information. Together, we are building a stronger, more informed, and engaged community—one conversation at a time. Beech Grove High School ONLY - eLearning Day on 2/14/25
Dear Beech Grove High School Families, Faculty, and Staff, Due to a significant increase in student absences related to illness, Beech Grove High School ONLY will have an asynchronous eLearning Day on Friday, February 14 . Over the past two days, our student absence rate has averaged 23% , surpassing the 20% threshold for concern . All other schools will be in session, as usual. We want to prioritize the health and well-being of our students and staff. Many of the reported absences are due to respiratory infections, including high fever, strep throat, and influenza A . We encourage families to closely monitor for symptoms and keep students home if they are experiencing illness. As a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, February 17 , in observance of Presidents’ Day . Additionally, our Varsity Basketball game will still take place at 6:00 PM on Friday, February 14 . Thank you for your understanding and support as we take proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of our school community. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We’re confident that this new format will make finding the information you need easier and more enjoyable. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with it, and as always, thank you for staying engaged with Beech Grove City Schools! Hornet Blast January 31, 2025 Superintendent's Corner with Dr. Hammack In Beech Grove City Schools, we are always looking for ways to strengthen the connection between our schools and our community. One of the most meaningful ways you can stay engaged and informed is by attending our monthly school board meetings, held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Hornet Training Center at Beech Grove High School or online via livestream: https://www.youtube.com/@beechgrovestudentnetwork5894/live. (You can click the button below.) These meetings are a time for celebration of achievements and thoughtful discussion about the future of our schools. Starting in February 2025, we’re excited to introduce some enhancements to these meetings that will provide even greater insight into the work happening across the district. Each month, we’ll feature a presentation from one of our incredible district leaders—principals, directors, or specialized staff—on a key topic affecting our schools. From strategic planning to student attendance and even behind-the-scenes work in food service and transportation, these reports will highlight the dedication and expertise that make Beech Grove City Schools a wonderful place to learn and grow. Our goal is to foster transparency, collaboration, and trust in every decision we make. We hope these changes will make our board meetings even more meaningful for everyone involved. Whether you’re a parent, a staff member, or a community member, I encourage you to attend a meeting and see the exciting work we’re doing to support our students. Your voice and presence matter. Together, we will continue to make Beech Grove City schools a place where we love where we learn. Warmly, Dr. Laura Hammack Superintendent, Beech Grove City Schools School Board meeting link HERE! BGCS District Information Hornet Collaboration in Action! From Sketches to Smiles! BGHS 3D art teacher Alison Felice teamed up with South Grove teachers Mr. Runner and Mrs. Nulliner for an out-of-this-world project that brought 3rd graders and high school ceramics students together! As part of their Solar System unit, the 3rd graders created aliens from planets of their choosing and wrote descriptions and stories about their creations. Mrs. Felice’s 3D art students took those ideas and sketched their interpretations of the aliens. Today, the high schoolers visited South Grove to meet the 3rd graders, share their designs, and get feedback. Ms. Felice described the experience as one of the highlights of her teaching career: "Seeing those little faces light up when they saw the high schoolers coming down the hallway was so precious." This event is always a fun and engaging night for students, filled with memories they’ll talk about for weeks. Don’t miss it! Celebrating Creativity & Self-Love at BGMS! Art class is more than just art with Mrs. Sutton After 21 years of teaching, Mrs.Sutton says these first few weeks of the new semester have been some of the best days ever! To kick things off, she introduced her students to the powerful book "The Best Part of Me" and gave them an unforgettable assignment: capture a photo of their "best part" and write a heartfelt 5-6 paragraph reflection about why it’s special. The results? Absolutely incredible! Mrs.Sutton has laughed, cried, and been amazed by the creativity and vulnerability of her students. In a world filled with unrealistic beauty standards, this project encouraged students to look inward, embrace their individuality, and celebrate the unique qualities that make them truly beautiful—a challenging task, especially as teenagers. From artistic photos to deeply personal writing, these students went above and beyond, showing just how much heart and talent they have. Mrs.Sutton is not only Hornet proud but teacher proud! We are so inspired by these young minds and the powerful lessons happening right here at Beech Grove!
