Dear Norwalk Public Schools Community, The Norwalk Board of Education invites you to participate in a Town Hall focusing on next year’s school budget. The town hall will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. at Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School . Learn more about the budget process and add your voice to the development of the FY 2024-25 Operating and Capital Budgets. The Norwalk BOE and Norwalk Public Schools want to hear feedback from our community and what they believe should be the priorities when putting together next year’s budget. Childcare will be provided at the school so parents can participate fully in the process while knowing their child is safe and taken care of. We thank you for participating in this important process to help us develop a budget that will allow us to provide the best education possible to our scholars and give our educators the tools and resources they need to do their job to the best of their ability. The Right to Read On Wednesday, Norwalk Public Schools invited the community to pledge their support in our mission that every child gains the fundamental right to read. The Norwalk community gathered at the Wall Street Theatre for a screening of “The Right to Read” followed by a dual panel session. Dr. Alexandra Estrella was joined by several of her counterparts from Stamford and Fairfield to share what their districts are doing to ensure every child learns to read and the resources still needed to achieve this goal. That's why Oakland-based NAACP activist Kareem Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for better reading instruction. “What good is winning the right to vote if we can’t even read the ballot?” Fed up with the bleak reading scores in his own community, Kareem files a petition with the Oakland Unified School District demanding change. Responsible Use of Cell Phones
Dear Norwalk Public School Families, As the Assistant Superintendent of Digital Learning and Innovation, I would like to remind you about the responsible use of personal devices, such as cell phones, by students in our school system. It is important that our students understand the ethical guidelines and follow the code of conduct both online and in school. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please refer to Board Policy 5030 - Use of Private Technology Devices by Students . This policy provides detailed information about the use of personal technology devices within our school system. To ensure a safe and productive learning environment, we encourage students to follow these best practices for responsible use of cell phones in a school setting: Use during designated times : Students should only use their cell phones during designated times, such as breaks or free periods. Cell phone usage during class time should be limited to educational purposes as directed by the teacher. Respect privacy : Students should respect the privacy of others and refrain from taking photos, videos, or recordings without explicit permission. Avoid distractions : Cell phones should not disrupt the learning environment. Students should set their devices to silent mode or turn them off during instructional time. Be mindful of content : Students should be aware of the content they access or share using their cell phones. It is important to follow appropriate guidelines and avoid sharing inappropriate or harmful material. Cyberbullying prevention : Students should treat others with respect and kindness both online and offline. Cyberbullying will not be tolerated within our school system. We believe that responsible use of personal devices can enhance learning opportunities while fostering a safe and respectful environment for all students. NPS Communications Medical Opt Out - Epinephrine Connecticut law requires the school nurse and other qualified school personnel in all public schools to maintain epinephrine in cartridge injectors (EpiPens) for the purpose of administering emergency first aid to students who experience allergic reactions and do not have a prior written authorization of a parent or guardian or a prior written order of a qualified medical professional for the administration of epinephrine. If you wish to refuse to have epinephrine administered to your child, please fill out the attached form or click here . State law permits a parent or guardian of a student to submit a written directive to the school nurse or school medical advisor that epinephrine NOT be administered to such a student in an emergency situation. Please return the completed form to your child's school nurse. Norwalk River Fun Run Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. (Rain Date: Sunday, Dec. 3) Veterans Park, 42 Seaview Ave. in Norwalk Join us for the 32nd annual Norwalk River Fun Run on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. Norwalk Public Schools and the City of Norwalk's Recreation & Parks Department will host a Fitness Fun Run for the young people of Norwalk to promote physical fitness and the joy of running. The 1.2 mile race will start at the Vets Park basketball courts and end at the entrance to The Maritime Aquarium. The $12 registration fee helps to cover the expenses of the run.
