  • Please Join Me in Welcoming Mrs. Kimberly Rice to De...

    Welcome Mrs. Kimberly Rice to DCS! The DeRuyter Central School District is excited to welcome  Mrs. Kimberly Rice as our new PK-12 Principal! Mrs. Rice joins DeRuyter after serving for several years in principal roles within the CNS School District. She officially begins her role on Monday, July 20, but has already been working closely with our leadership team to ensure a smooth transition into the new school year. Over the past several weeks, she has been learning about our district, meeting with staff, and beginning to build the relationships that are so important to a strong school community. One thing I heard over and over again throughout the interview process was that Mrs. Rice is a relationship builder. People described her as approachable, collaborative, thoughtful, and genuinely committed to students. They appreciated her positive energy, strong communication skills, fairness, and her ability to listen first. Those qualities came through consistently in every conversation I had throughout the interview process, and they were a big part of why I knew she would be a great fit for DeRuyter. Mrs. Rice will work closely with  Mrs. Jenny Valente , who recently transitioned into her new role as Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education. Together, they bring complementary strengths to our leadership team. Mrs. Rice will focus on the day-to-day leadership of our PK-12 school, supporting students and staff, fostering a positive school culture, and building strong partnerships with families. Mrs. Valente will provide districtwide leadership in curriculum, instruction, and special education, helping strengthen teaching and learning while ensuring students receive the support they need to succeed. Together, they will build on the many strengths that already make DeRuyter such a special place while helping lead the next chapter of our district. As we continue developing our Portrait of a Graduate and preparing for New York State's NYS Inspires initiative, they will help ensure our work remains focused on providing every student with the knowledge, skills, character, and opportunities needed for success. Most importantly, they will work alongside our outstanding faculty, staff, families, and community to ensure every student is known, supported, challenged, and prepared for the future.   • Community Forums: Planning for the Future of Athleti...

    The DeRuyter Central School District Board of Education and administration invite students, families, alumni, coaches, and community members to attend one or both of our upcoming community forums to discuss the future of athletics at DeRuyter. Tuesday, July 28 6:00 p.m. DCS Small Gymnasium and/or Saturday, August 22 9:00 a.m. DCS Small Gymnasium (The second forum will build upon the first and may include additional information based on community feedback and ongoing planning. Community members are welcome to attend either or both sessions.) For generations, DeRuyter has been proud of its strong tradition of athletics and youth development. Our athletic programs have helped students develop teamwork, leadership, perseverance, sportsmanship, and school pride while creating lifelong memories. Like many rural school districts across New York State, however, declining enrollment has made it increasingly challenging to consistently field athletic teams. Although DeRuyter has worked with neighboring districts through athletic combinations to expand opportunities for students, there have still been recent seasons when we were unable to offer modified or varsity opportunities in sports such as softball, girls’ basketball, and other modified programs because there simply were not enough student-athletes to form teams. It is important to note that we are not anticipating any significant changes to our athletic programming for the 2026-27 school year. One of the important responsibilities of the Board of Education and district leadership is to think strategically about the future of our school, not simply respond when challenges arise. Good governance requires us to examine trends, engage stakeholders, and consider potential opportunities well before decisions become necessary. These forums are intended to help our community understand current enrollment and participation trends so that, together, we can be proactive, develop thoughtful plans for the future, and avoid being forced to make decisions reactively if challenges arise. During these forums, we will: Share enrollment and athletic participation data. Review current and projected participation trends. Discuss the opportunities and challenges facing rural school athletic programs. Explore a range of strategies that could help sustain and strengthen athletic opportunities for DeRuyter students, including what a more intentional athletic partnership with Otselic Valley Central School District could look like in the years ahead. Answer questions, listen to community perspectives, and gather feedback that will help inform future decisions. No decisions will be made at these meetings. Their purpose is to provide information, engage our community in meaningful dialogue, and ensure that future decisions are guided by data, thoughtful planning, and a shared commitment to providing the best possible athletic opportunities for DeRuyter students. We encourage everyone with an interest in DeRuyter athletics to join us for one or both of these important conversations.   • Open Weight Room for July!

    Good Afternoon, We are excited to announce that this summer we will be piloting an Open Weight Room program for our staff, students, and community members. The weight room will be available Monday through Friday from 6:30–8:00 a.m. during the month of July, beginning July 6 and concluding July 31. We welcome individuals to come in and take advantage of our facilities. A staff member will be on site each morning to assist with equipment and answer any questions regarding the machines. Please note that shower facilities are not available for use after workouts. Restrooms will be accessible, and we ask that all participants bring a clean, dry pair of shoes to wear in the weight room. For safety and attendance purposes, all participants will be required to sign in each visit and complete a waiver upon their first visit. We are looking forward to piloting this opportunity and hope it will be a beneficial resource for our school community that we can continue in the future. Thank you, Interest Form
