Cazenovia Unified Sports Program Earns State-Level B...
The Cazenovia Central School District has proudly earned a New York State Inclusive School Banner, a distinction awarded to schools that demonstrate exceptional commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for all students. Last week on November 14, 2025, Cazenovia hosted the Central NY Summit. This honor recognizes the powerful work of the Cazenovia Unified Sports Program, supported by the district’s dedicated Youth Activation Committee (YAC)—a team of student leaders who champion inclusion every day. To qualify for the state-level banner, schools must meet several criteria: Offer at least two Unified Sports programs, Host an annual Inclusion Week, and Hold monthly meetings focused on promoting inclusive values and opportunities. Cazenovia has not only met these standards but has embraced them fully. The district currently runs Unified Bowling and Unified Basketball, two programs that bring students with and without intellectual disabilities together as teammates, leaders, and friends. The result is a school culture where every student feels valued and supported. This success is due in large part to the leadership of Christina New, the YAC Advisor, and Todd MacIntoch, and Brian Ellithorpe, team head coaches, whose guidance has helped the program thrive. Under their direction, students have taken an active role in shaping the district’s inclusion efforts—organizing events, building awareness, and modeling what it means to be part of a unified community. The Youth Activation Committee continues to push the program forward with energy and creativity. This winter, student leaders are planning to host a Polar Plunge, both as a school-wide celebration and a fundraiser to support Unified Sports initiatives. Their eyes are already on the next milestone: earning a National Banner, an honor reserved for districts that go above and beyond to embed inclusion into daily school life. With momentum, teamwork, and a strong student voice, the Cazenovia Unified Sports Program is not just meeting expectations—it’s setting the standard for what an inclusive school community can be.

Boards to Interview Merger Study Consultants in Exec...
Dear Cazenovia School District Community, We wanted to share information about an upcoming step in the potential merger process with the Cazenovia Central School District. The Morrisville-Eaton and Cazenovia Boards of Education will hold a joint meeting on Monday, November 24, at 5:45 p.m. at the Nelson Town Hall. During this meeting, the Boards will enter into executive session to interview finalists from the Request for Proposal (RFP) for a consultant to conduct a merger study. As previously communicated, the interviews will be held in executive session as we will be reviewing the employment histories, qualifications, educational backgrounds, and other criteria of the finalists. In October of 2023, the Morrisville-Eaton Board of Education requested that the Cazenovia Central School District explore the possibility of a merger. Both districts have agreed to explore the process and have been in the exploration phase for over two years. We understand the community's interest in this process. Please be assured that public engagement is a required part of this process under New York State law. We will continue to provide updates as they become available. The Merger Study and Funding Both the Cazenovia and Morrisville-Eaton school districts were awarded a $40,000 grant from the New York State Department of State to help fund the merger study. The grant awards a maximum of $20,000 per participating school district, with up to $100,000 available to support merger studies. The study's total cost is typically around $100,000, but is increasing due to demand. The remaining costs are now aidable through BOCES. Our district is currently between the first and second steps (outlined below) of the process. BOCES sent out the Request for Proposal (RFP) on behalf of the districts earlier this year to find a consultant. The boards are now at the stage of interviewing consultants to hire. The Merger Process Under New York State Law Under New York State law, the process for a school district merger, also known as centralization, is a multi-step process that involves the Boards of Education and the community. Here is a general overview of the steps involved: Exploration and Information Gathering: This is the initial phase where districts explore the reasons for a merger and identify potential partners. Cazenovia and Morrisville-Eaton have held multiple joint meetings and community forums to discuss the potential of a merger. Feasibility Study: If the Boards of Education agree, a comprehensive feasibility study is commissioned. This study, which can take around nine months, evaluates a merger's potential benefits and challenges, focusing on finances, educational impact, facilities, and transportation. The study provides a factual basis for community members to become informed and assist them in reaching a decision. Review of Findings: After the study is completed, the State Education Department reviews the results. The Boards of Education then decide whether to reject the merger, delay the decision, modify the plan, or move forward with a vote. Community members will have opportunities to provide feedback on the study's findings. Straw Vote (Non-binding): If the boards decide to proceed, they may hold a non-binding "straw vote" or collect petitions to gauge public support for the merger. A straw vote does not have a minimum percentage of registered voters required to be accepted. Binding Vote: If the straw vote or petitions show public favor for a merger, the State Education Department will set a date for a binding vote. If a majority of voters in both districts approve the merger, the new district is formed. New District Formation: If approved, the new school district would be established, and a new Board of Education would be elected. A new school's name is automatically the names of the two previous schools combined, but there is a process to change it to an entirely different name. For more information, please visit the district's website. We thank you for your continued engagement in this important process.

New Additions to the Cazenovia Central School Commu...
Good Morning Lakers, We are thrilled to announce a wonderful addition to our school community this year: we are welcoming two certified therapy dogs, Oakley, at Burton Street, and Murphy, at Emory Ave to our staff. This decision is part of our commitment to continually fostering a supportive and positive school environment that addresses the social and emotional well-being of our students. The Purpose of Our Therapy Dog Program Our therapy dogs are trained and professionally certified animals, working alongside their designated handlers (trained staff members). They are not solely pets; they are partners in our student support services. There are many purposes to having therapy dogs in schools, but included in these are providing a consistent presence that helps students with: Social-Emotional Regulation: The simple, consistent presence of a therapy dog has been scientifically proven to help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and ease anxiety. They create a calm, predictable environment during stressful times, such as testing periods or after a challenging event. Reading and Communication Skills: Students who struggle with reading out loud often feel more comfortable practicing literacy skills by reading to a dog, who offers acceptance without criticism. A Sense of Belonging: The dogs serve as a positive connection point, helping students who feel isolated or who are having a difficult day feel more grounded and engaged with the school community. The presence of therapy dogs has also been shown to improve social skills amongst students' peers. These are only a few of the advantages; countless other benefits exist as well. Program Details and Safety We want to assure you that the program has been implemented with careful planning, focusing on safety and student sensitivity: Training & Health: Both Oakley and Murphy are current on all vaccinations, professionally groomed, and have undergone temperament and obedience training by certified organizations. Allergies and Phobias: We will implement strict protocols to ensure the health and comfort of all students and staff, including those with allergies or dog phobias. Interaction will be voluntary, and the dogs will not enter classrooms unless invited. Schedule: The dogs will be on a consistent, structured schedule under the direct supervision of their handlers and will have designated "quiet time" away from students. We look forward to the positive impact this program will have on our students' well-being and academic focus. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the therapy dog program, please contact Kevin Linck, the Assistant Superintendent at klinck@caz.cnyric.org .
