HC Weekly E-Blast September 5, 2024
Weekly E-Blast | September 5, 2024 What does AI look like in a classroom? Mr. Chokshi occasionally asks students to use AI to review basic concepts, get preliminary feedback on their writing, and generate additional research questions. Here's what he has to say about why: "While most of the work students complete does not involve the use of technology, I encourage it for specific learning tasks so they can learn to use AI ethically and responsibly. My goal is for them to use technology to become more skillful & independent learners while freeing up class time for deeper human-to-human connections." We are in this Together It is with a heavy heart, a thoughtful mind, and a caring hand that we think of the students, staff and community of Apalachee High School in Georgia. Hinsdale Central Football Game Visitors Protocol Hinsdale Central appreciates the support and partnership with our community. We love to see our future Red Devil players, students, and families at our HC events. To maintain the safety and security of our Red Devil community, we want to share the following spectator expectations and procedures for all home football games. The following procedures are in effect for all students and adults that plan on attending. Weapons Detections System will be implemented for all home football games. All spectators will be required to pass through the system upon entering the stadium. No bags will be allowed into the stadium during football games. This includes but is not limited to backpacks, sport/tote/duffle bags. Small purses or clear bags will be allowed but must pass through the weapons detection system and are subject to search. There will be “No Re-Entry” once a person leaves the stadium. No outside food or beverages will be allowed. Youth Admission All non-high school students/children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult who purchased a ticket or has a HC Boosters pass. Any non-high school student/child without adult supervision will not be permitted to enter. The adult is expected to be present at the game for the entire time while the child(ren) are present. A max of four children will be admitted per adult in order to ensure ample supervision. These procedures are for the safety of non-high school students/children in attendance. Any child(ren) without adult supervision and/or who cannot find their supervising adult will be required to contact a parent/guardian and be picked up from the game immediately. Hinsdale Central High School Students: All Hinsdale Central High School students will be allowed admission free of charge. Students will need their school ID to scan in at the student entrance. Hinsdale Central students MUST enter the stadium at the Northeast gate by the tennis courts (closer to 55th Street). Thank you for your support and cooperation. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful community that provides a safe and positive spectator experience. On behalf of our D86 CELT student organization (Culture and Equity Leadership Team) we invite you monthly to both deepen your knowledge or cultural and religious observances of your peers or to feel seen and affirmed in our spaces as you and your family acknowledge any traditions or values. The curated reminders and resources linked here at the beginning of each month are meant to highlight optional ways you can engage in commonly unknown holidays. Website Translation In the spring, the District 86 communications department worked with the district’s English Language Learners (ELL) program to expand the translation feature that is available on our family of websites. This feature allows a user to have a site translated in their preferred language. You can access the translation feature by clicking on the word English or the American flag in the lower right-hand corner of any webpage. When you click on the word or flag, it will open a list of available languages. You can select your preferred language by scrolling up or down the list and clicking on it. After you click on it, the entire site will automatically be translated into that language. You can check out a screencast video about how to locate and use the feature by visiting https://bit.ly/3oqDUw2 . Please note that a change will only be applied to the individual site where it is made (i.e., district, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South or Transition Center). If you want to update the preferred language on more than one site (e.g., the district site and a school site), you will need to make the change on each of them. In addition, if you do not see your preferred language on the list, please email Alex Mayster at amayster@hinsdale86.org . Hinsdale South Weekly Newsletter - September 5, 2024
We are in this Together It is with a heavy heart, a thoughtful mind, and a caring hand that we think of the students, staff and community of Apalachee High School in Georgia. The education of our students begins with them feeling safe and secure in our building and on our campus. You entrust us to provide the best education possible so that our students can pursue their ideal future. The work of our teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, educational support staff and security works when we partner with you to create a culture and climate that supports a student's ambitions. Hinsdale South is a family because we work together, a partnership to provide support at school, at home and in the community. If you see something, please say something. If an adult is not available, your child can use our Tip Line, Safe2Help. Weekly Newsletter - September 5, 2024 Letter from the Principal Each month, we would like to celebrate different departments at Hinsdale South and recognize all the amazing work they do for our students and staff on a daily basis. Throughout the month of September, we will be showcasing our Science and Technology staff. Fun facts: National Science week was August 10-18 (right when we started school!) and Education Technology Day is September 23. A huge THANK YOU to our Science and Technology staff for all that they do! South Pride! Dr. Kari Peronto Principal Staff Highlights Science Teacher Selected for National Institute – Mr. Robb Gotlund Robb Gotlund, AP Biology teacher and Assistant Chair of the Science Department, was one of 28 teachers chosen nationwide to participate in the 2024 Climate, Health & the Science of Solutions Summer Institute, which is presented by the Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah. Teachers selected for this honor collaborated with experts in the field, then created multimedia curriculum materials to help students explore the impacts of, and potential solutions for, climate change on human health. We are very proud to have Mr. Gotlund on our Science teaching team and to represent us with this prestigious selection! Shout out to Patty Aguilar! Patty is our data guru, and we truly wouldn't know what we'd do without her! She spearheaded the implementation of the Infinite Campus Student Information System with remarkable success. Beyond leading this major project, she seamlessly integrated key functionalities like online registration, fee payments, food services, and countless data reports into the system. Her most recent achievements include developing the building entrance, attendance, and the off-campus lunch scanning programs. Patty’s expertise and dedication continue to enhance the district’s operations and efficiency in ways that make a real difference for our staff and students. Off Campus Lunch Attention Seniors! This is a reminder that if you meet the criteria below you are eligible for Off-Campus Lunch: Participating students must be a senior. For the 2024-2025 school year (pilot year), students will be eligible only if they passed all classes with a C or better in the second semester of their junior year (previous school year). To be eligible for any given week (after September 3, 2024), students must be passing all of their classes with a grade of C or better; eligibility is re-evaluated on a weekly basis. Students must have no more than five (5) unexcused absences (as defined in the Student Handbook) within a previous 9 week period. Students must have no more than 2 Office Disciplinary Referrals within a previous 9 week period. Students must have no out-of-school suspensions for the current semester. A signed Off-Campus Lunch Participation Agreement must be on file. Football Game Expectations As we prepare for the upcoming football season, we want to ensure that your experience at our stadium is both enjoyable and safe. To enhance our security measures and provide a secure environment for everyone, we are implementing our Weapons Detection Systems at all stadium entrances. What to expect: Our system is designed to efficiently screen all guests upon entry. This technology allows for a quick and seamless process, minimizing wait times while ensuring the highest level of safety. Prohibited Items: As a reminder, certain items are not allowed inside the stadium, including weapons of any kind, sharp objects and other hazardous materials. No alcohol is allowed. Students are asked not to bring their backpacks into the stadium. Hinsdale South Students Hinsdale South students may enter the stadium at the Main Gate or the South Gate near 75th Street. All Hinsdale South High School students will be allowed admission free of charge with their student ID. No temporary ID's will be allowed. Students will be scanned in at the student entrance. There will be “No Re-Entry” - once a person leaves the stadium they will not be able to re-enter. Students will not be allowed to bring in sports equipment such as footballs, basketballs, etc. into the stadium. Students are at the event to support their peers. Please show respect to all performers, participants, and student-athletes for the home and visiting teams. Youth Admission and Expectations All middle school students and younger children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult who purchased a ticket or has a HS Boosters ticket/pass. This adult is expected to be present at the game for the entire time while the child(ren) is present. If there is no adult present for students younger than high school age, they will not be permitted in the stadium. Any child(ren) without adult supervision and/or who cannot find their supervising adult will be required to contact a parent/guardian and be picked up from the game immediately. Essentially, we need parents & guardians of non-high school aged students to accompany and supervise students at HS football games. This is for the safety of younger (non high school aged) children in attendance. Chromebooks and School Readiness It has become an expectation in 1:1 school environments that students are prepared for school each day by bringing a fully charged Chromebook (and charger). If students did not bring their Chromebook, or failed to charge it, they may obtain a temporary TSI “loaner” device or charger that is to be returned at the end of the day. Chronic abuse of this TSI loaner system may result in disciplinary consequences. Temporary TSI Loaner instances start over at the semester. *Temporary TSI Loaner instances start over at the semester. **Lost/stolen devices or students experiencing issues with their device that require repairs are not counted. Temporary TSI Loaners Used Consequences View Student Course Information in Canvas In addition to using Infinite Campus to access your student's grades, parents/guardians can also view course information in Canvas. Students can contact Safe 2 Help using a free app, via text, phone, email, and the website ( Safe2HelpIllinois.com ) to share information on school safety issues in a confidential environment. Once vetted, the information provided will be shared with local district and school officials and/or the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)/911 call center, depending on the nature of the information shared. Bullying/Harassment/Intimidation At Hinsdale Central High School, our school , bullying of any kind, by any person, is unacceptable. All students should be free from worries about being bullied. Students who bully others must be taught other, appropriate ways of interacting with peers. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information concerning our anti-bullying program and to encourage you to help us identify students who are being bullied. The School Board Policy, 7:180 Prevention of and Response to Bullying, Intimidation, and Harassment begins with this goals statement: Bullying, intimidation, and harassment diminish a student's ability to learn and a school's ability to educate. Preventing students from engaging in these disruptive behaviors and providing all students equal access to a safe, non-hostile learning environment are important District goals. Bullying includes cyberbullying and means any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or electronically, directed toward a student or students that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following: Placing the student or students in reasonable fear of harm to the student's or students' person or property; Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the student's or students' physical or mental health; Substantially interfering with the student's or students' academic performance; or Substantially interfering with the student's or students' ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school. Bullying may take various forms, including, without limitation, one or more of the following: harassment, threats, intimidation, stalking, physical violence, sexual harassment, sexual violence, theft, public humiliation, destruction of property, or retaliation for asserting or alleging an act of bullying. This list is meant to be illustrative and non-exhaustive. Cyberbullying means bullying through the use of technology or any electronic communication, including, without limitation, any transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data, or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a wire, radio, electromagnetic system, photo-electronic system, or photo-optical system, including without limitation electronic mail, Internet communications, instant messages, or facsimile communications. Cyberbullying includes the creation of a webpage or weblog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person or the knowing impersonation of another person as the author of posted content or messages if the creation or impersonation creates any of the effects enumerated in the definition of bullying. Cyberbullying also includes the distribution by electronic means of a communication to more than one person or the posting of material on an electronic medium that may be accessed by one or more persons if the distribution or posting creates any of the effects enumerated in the definition of bullying. As outlined in School Board Policy 7:190 Student Behavior : Using a cellular telephone, video recording device, personal digital assistant (PDA), or other electronic device in any manner that disrupts the educational environment or violates the rights of others, including using the device to take photographs in locker rooms or bathrooms, cheat, or otherwise violate student conduct rules. Prohibited conduct specifically includes, without limitation, creating, sending, sharing, viewing, receiving, or possessing an indecent visual depiction of oneself or another person through the use of a computer, electronic communication device, or cellular phone. Students taking photographs or videos of another student or staff member without prior permission are violating the above board policy. A student is subject to disciplinary action for engaging in prohibited student conduct, as described in School Board Policy 7:190 Student Behavior , whenever the student's conduct is reasonably related to school or school activities. Please encourage your peers, students, or child to report any of these types of behaviors to a staff member in the building or they can utilize the anonymous tip line located on the school website. Please review the below signs that may help identify that a young person may be experiencing bullying/harassment: Does not want to go to school and refuses to explain the reason Talks about not having any friends Has unexplained bruises, cuts, scratches, or abrasions Has unexplained damage to clothing, possessions, books, etc. Frequently loses money or possessions Loses interest in school and/or has declining grades Becomes withdrawn and/or has stress or depression symptoms These signs do not necessarily mean a child is being bullied/harassed, but if present, ask your friend, student, or child what is taking place in order to gain a better understanding of the social emotional well-being. If you have concerns, please reach out to a Social Worker, School Counselor or Dean of Students for assistance Daily Announcements Announcements are emailed daily to all HC students and staff members. All parents will receive our Daily Announcements until the end of September, at which point only parents who opt-in will receive them. Hinsdale South Weekly Newsletter - August 29, 2024
Weekly Newsletter - August 29, 2024 Letter from the Principal Good afternoon Hornets-- It is hard to believe we've been back at school for 2 weeks already, but since the first day, the building has been buzzing with excitement and positivity! From clubs and organizations starting to meet up, to regular athletic practices, to our historic first Girls Flag Football home game...the 24-25 school year is destined to be a memorable one! Just a friendly reminder that our Curriculum Night / Open House is tonight, Thursday, August 29 at 7PM. This is a great opportunity to follow your student's schedule, meet their teachers, and experience each classroom learning environment as the teacher reviews academic expectations for their class. Our building leadership team will be in the cafeteria to meet with you if you have any questions throughout the evening - so stop by to see Dr. Peronto (Principal), Mr. Vonnahme (AP of Instruction), Dr. Burritt (AP of Operations), Mr. Holland (Director of Counseling), Mr. Ostrow (Athletic Director), Mr. Chavarria (Activities Director), Mr. Madl, Dean Fromm, Dean Kline (Deans), and Ms. Marks (Director of Special Education). I am looking forward to meeting new families and reconnecting with those of you I already have the pleasure of knowing. With South Pride, Kari Peronto, Ed.D. Curriculum Night Curriculum Night is tonight, Thursday, August 29 from 7-9PM. This is a great opportunity to follow your student's schedule, meet their teachers, talk with administrators and experience each classroom learning environment as the teacher reviews academic expectations of their class. During your student's lunch hour, feel free to meet with the members of our building leadership team inside the cafeteria for light refreshments. There will also be tables set up for parents and families to visit our Hinsdale South parent organizations which will be located outside of the cafeteria. Please consider stopping by to become a member or purchase some merchandise! At 6PM in the Black and Gold room, Mr. Vonnahme, Assistant Principal will be discussing Title I funding. Title I is funding from the federal government through the ESSA Grant designed to provide additional academic support for low-income students. If you would like to learn more about how these funds are used to support Hinsdale South students, please stop by before Curriculum Night. Football Game Procedures As we prepare for the upcoming football season, we want to ensure that your experience at our stadium is both enjoyable and safe. Hinsdale South Student Expectations Hinsdale South students may enter the stadium at the Main Gate or the South Gate near 75th Street. South Pride, Dr. Kari Peronto, Principal Mr. Jason Madl, Director of Deans Ed Zorich, South Security Supervisor Be Here - You Matter! Attention Hornets! We want you here. Being at school every day is the best way for you to further your education and get any support you may need from trusted adults. Upon entry to the building, if students do not have their physical ID, students may obtain a temporary ID and lanyard from the check-in desk. If you have concerns, please reach out to a Social Worker, School Counselor or Dean of Students for assistance. Friday Night Lights Get ready for Friday Night Lights! Transition to ACT & Detailed Assessment Information
Dear District 86 Families, As we begin the school year, I wanted to share a few important updates to the District 86 standardized testing program. For the 2024-25 school year, the state of Illinois has changed the required accountability test for high school students to the ACT . Since 2014, the required accountability test for high school students has been the SAT. In developing our 2024-25 ACT transition Plan we focused on the following key principles: These tests matter to our students, parents, and to the district. The opportunity to practice these tests helps our students. The most important preparation for students is rigorous, comprehensive, and well-rounded coursework throughout their high school experience. A few key highlights for the 2024-25 school year are summarized below. Grade 11 students will have the option to take the PSAT/NMSQT on Thursday, October 10, 2024. This exam is the official qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Each school will share registration information in the next few weeks. Grade 9, 10, and 11 students will be given the PreACT test on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Grade 12 students will not be in attendance on this day unless they choose to take a previously scheduled Seal of Biliteracy test. Grade 11 students will have the option to take the SAT on Thursday, March 27, 2025. As required by the state, Grade 9 and 10 students will be given the PreACT again on either April 16, 2025 or April 17, 2025. As required by the state, Grade 11 students will be given the ACT on April 16, 2025. The ACT Science test will be given instead of the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) for state accountability. Please use the following link to learn more about Testing Information and Resources in District 86 . The D86 assessment program is an important component of our comprehensive academic approach and post-secondary planning for our students. Families are encouraged to reach out to their school counselor with academic questions or for more information about post-secondary planning. Sincerely, Jason Markey Assistant Superintendent for Academics

Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year!
From the Superintendent Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year August 16, 2024 Dear District 86 Families, Welcome to the start of the 2024-25 school year! As I embark on my first year as your superintendent, I want to express my heartfelt excitement about being a part of this remarkable school district. District 86 is renowned for its commitment to educational excellence, and it is truly an honor to join this vibrant community. Our district is home to two outstanding high schools and a remarkable Transition Center. I am eager to work alongside our dedicated staff, outstanding students, and engaged families to build upon our great traditions and make District 86 the best school district in Illinois. One of the most inspiring aspects of District 86 is the passion of our community. It is this enthusiasm that drives us to strive for excellence. Together, let’s seek ways to leverage our collective passion in order to provide the most enriching and supportive environment for our students. We’ve had a great couple of days to start things off. At Hinsdale Central, the whole faculty got together to applaud as the new 9th graders entered the gym for their kickoff assembly. It was fun to see all those new students trying to hide their nervousness, but then break into sly grins and smiles as they realized all the racket was a celebration of them. At the Transition Center, our students were getting prepared for their upcoming trips to the College of DuPage, and learning about how timesheets work for their upcoming work-based learning experiences. At Hinsdale South, 9th graders entered the field house to choose the activities and athletics they were most interested in for the upcoming school year. There are so many options and opportunities available, and I chatted with several groups of teenagers who were struggling to make up their mind about what they wanted to be involved in. I’m looking forward to seeing you around our schools, in classrooms, at after-school activities, sporting events, and more. If you see me, please step up, introduce yourself, and say hello. Your perspectives and experiences are incredibly interesting and valuable to me, and I look forward to learning about them. Together, let’s make this year extraordinary for our students and for our entire District 86 community. Sincerely, Dr. Michael Lach Superintendent

Follow these tips from the National Safety Council to safely share the road with school-bound pedestrians: Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign Take extra care to look for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way Curriculum Night Curriculum Night is Thursday, August 29 from 7-9pm. This is a great opportunity to follow your student's schedule, meet their teachers, talk with administrators and experience each classroom learning environment as the teacher reviews academic expectations of their class. There will also be tables set up for parents and families to visit our Hinsdale South parent organizations - please consider stopping by to become a member or purchase some merchandise! Also occurring on August 29 directly before Curriculum Night, Hinsdale South receives Title I funding from the federal government through the ESSA Grant designed to provide additional academic support for low-income students. If you would like to learn more about how these funds are used to support Hinsdale South students, please visit the Black and Gold Room from 6-7pm on August 29. This feature allows a user to have a site translated in their preferred language. You can access the translation feature by clicking on the word English or the American flag in the lower left -hand corner of any webpage. When you click on the word or flag, it will open a list of available languages. You can select your preferred language by scrolling up or down the list and clicking on it. After you click on it, the entire site will automatically be translated into that language. You can check out a screencast video about how to locate and use the feature by visiting https://bit.ly/3oqDUw2. Please note that a change will only be applied to the individual site where it is made (i.e., district, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South or Transition Center). If you want to update the preferred language on more than one site (e.g., the district site and a school site), you will need to make the change on each of them. In addition, if you do not see your preferred language on the list, please email Alex Mayster at amayster@hinsdale86.org.
