Deans Office Attendance Matters: Every Day Counts Did you know that missing just two days of school each month adds up to more than 10% of the school year? Research from Johns Hopkins University and the Illinois State Board of Education shows that students who are “chronically absent” (missing 10% or more of the year) are far less likely to stay on track academically and graduate on time. Even absences for valid reasons, like illness or appointments, can add up quickly and make it harder for students to keep pace. Every day in class helps build strong relationships, skills, and confidence. Let’s work together to keep students in school and learning. If you’re facing barriers to attendance, please reach out to our Student Services Team. We’re here to help. Student Attendance Policies District 86 is committed to student success. One of the best indicators of student success is consistent school attendance as it leads to improved academic achievement. While some work can be completed at home, there is no replication for the classroom experience, which is essential to adolescent learning. Therefore, Hinsdale District 86 has established attendance protocols, which are designed to support students and keep students accountable. Students are required by state law to attend school every day. The D86 Board of Education's attendance policy states that students will attend and be on time for class. Student attendance is not optional; it is a requirement of every class. Additionally, the following is a guide to the intervention/supportive measures that may be implemented with each student. Please note that interventions will be individualized for each student to find the most appropriate solution(s) to support the student, including interventions for students with individualized education programs (IEP) and Section 504 plans; thus, not every intervention will be automatically applied to each student. Hinsdale South does not assign detention for absences that are reported by a parent or guardian, whether excused or unexcused. These policies have remained unchanged and are consistent with those of previous school years. If your student will be absent from school for any reason, please contact the attendance office within 24 hours of the notice to notify them. Without a valid reason, absences are considered “unexcused”, which could result in academic or behavioral consequences. Click here to view the Attendance Handbook for Parents and Students Pre Arranged Absences The Pre-Arranged Absence Form must be completed by the parent/guardian at least two (2) days before the absence begins in order for it to be excused. This form is required in the following instances: The student will be absent for three (3) or more school days. The student will be absent during final exams. The student will be absent due to a non-school-related activity. The student will be absent due to a civic event. Parents/guardians must contact the Attendance Office to verify the absence. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities Complete the Pre-Arranged Absence Form electronically. Include the reason for the absence and the relevant dates. For non-school-related competitive activities or sports, please provide a letter from the coach with dates, schedule, or registration documents. For college visits, please submit documentation of the scheduled appointment or tour. Student Responsibilities Discuss all assignments and classwork with teachers prior to the absence. Be prepared to meet all deadlines and complete required coursework on time. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain accurate attendance records. Bell to Bell, No Cell This year, students and staff will be expected to keep cell phones and other personal electronic devices out of sight, thereby out of mind, during instructional periods. It is critical that our instructional environment be a place for students to learn, collaborate with peers, and think critically. For that to happen, we as educational leaders want to create a learning environment that avoids distractions, in particular, digital distractions. Counseling Department FAFSA Assistance Attention seniors and families! Need help with the FAFSA? Hinsdale South has partnered with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) to offer free, on-site FAFSA assistance. Stop by the Counseling Office on Thursday, December 11th, during the lunch hours to meet with our ISAC representative and get the support you need. Please reach out to your child's School Counselor if you have any questions. College Visits Students wishing to visit with a college representative should sign up on SchooLinks and then come to the Counseling Office to get a pass for the visit from Mrs. Alvarez. Passes need to be signed by the teacher whose class the student will be missing. Students must have this pass in order to attend the college visit. Without it, they will not be admitted to the meeting. The College Rep Visit will usually last about 30- 45 minutes. Tuesday, December 9 11:40 AM - Minneapolis College of Art and Design 12:35 PM - Valley City State University College of DuPage - College Jumpstart An opportunity for rising senior high school students in College of DuPage’s region for up to four Gen Ed courses that are easily transferable to most institutions. The idea is to target courses that are challenging to find a qualified dual credit instructor, as well as courses that are highly transferable. Since students in District 502 receive a 50% discount on tuition while in high school, this is an opportunity for students to complete Gen Eds in a cohort-style environment, explore COD's campus, and build their transcript. Students will be able to enroll in a learning community that includes two courses. Students can enroll in both learning communities if they wish to take all 12 credit hours. Courses begin June 15 and end August 8. Registration begins March 11. Share Input on Asst. Supt. for Curriculum, Instructi...
Dear District 86 Community, Stakeholder input continues to be an important part of our leadership selection processes. In October, you were invited to complete a survey as part of our superintendent search. We recognize that this is a busy time of year and that completing multiple surveys can feel repetitive; however, your voice remains essential as we work to identify strong leaders for our district. District 86 is now seeking feedback from parents/guardians, staff members, students, and community members to inform the search for our next Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment . We invite you to share your perspectives by completing an anonymous survey. Your input will help inform the search process and ensure that we identify a leader who reflects the strengths, priorities, and values of our community.

November e-Newsletter: Thankful For Those Who Help D...
D86 E-Newsletter November 25, 2025 Message From the Superintendent: Thankful For Those Who Help D86 Thrive As November winds down and our community prepares for the Thanksgiving holiday, I’m reminded of how much we have to be thankful for in District 86. This season naturally invites reflection, and I keep thinking about how grateful I am for the many ways our students, staff, families, and community support one another and help our district thrive. Over the past several weeks, we have celebrated a number of accomplishments that speak to the strength, dedication, and spirit of our schools. While this is not an exhaustive list, I want to highlight a few of the bright spots that have brought pride to our district: Advanced Placement participation and achievement continue to rise. In spring 2025, 1,554 students took at least one AP exam, a 12% increase since 2021, despite overall district enrollment declining over the same period. Our students are not only taking on more challenges, they are excelling: 91% of all AP exams earned a score of 3 or higher, and 70% earned a 4 or 5. These outcomes reflect extraordinary hard work from students, families, and educators alike, and they speak to our shared commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school. We have also had several staff members earn important recognition. We are proud to celebrate Hinsdale Central Assistant Principal for Instruction Dr. Chris Cirrincione, who has been named Assistant Principal of the Year for the DuPage Region by the Illinois Principals Association. In addition, several of our athletic leaders have been honored: Hinsdale South’s John Charters was selected as a State Division Assistant Athletic Director of the Year; Hinsdale Central’s Matt McNiff was named the Illinois High School Association’s Coach of the Year; and Hinsdale Central’s Shawna Zsinko was recognized as the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association Girls 2A Regional Coach of the Year. Congratulations to all—we are proud of you! Our students and staff continue to demonstrate compassion and service, most recently through heartwarming efforts to pack and distribute food to community members in need. Watching our community come together to support others—especially at a time of year centered on gratitude—captures the best of who we are as a district. I also want to express my deep appreciation for our District 86 Board of Education. November includes School Board Members Appreciation Day, an opportunity to recognize the tremendous amount of time, care, and thoughtful stewardship our board members give on behalf of our students and community. Their service ensures that we continue moving forward with clarity, purpose, and a focus on what is best for our students. As we head into the holiday, I am grateful for the partnership and trust of our families, the hard work of our staff, and the resilience and brilliance of our students. Thank you for being such an essential part of the District 86 community. Wishing you a peaceful and restorative November. Sincerely, Dr. Michael Lach Superintendent Here's What Is Happening In District 86 600+ Meal Kits Prepared for D86 Families With support from the Board of Education, more than 600 meal kits were assembled for D86 students and their families. We are grateful to Brookhaven Market for partnering with us to make this effort possible. Update: Superintendent Search As part of the Superintendent Search, BWP & Associates shared insights gathered from focus groups with more than 200 stakeholders and survey feedback from over 600 participants. These findings informed a draft Leadership Profile that highlights the qualities the community values in the next superintendent. Dr. Cirrincione Named DuPage Assistant Principal of the Year The Illinois Principals Association has honored Dr. Chris Cirrincione as DuPage’s Assistant Principal of the Year. He will now advance to the statewide selection process, with the winner to be announced in the spring. College Jumpstart: Summer College Credit Opportunity for D86 Rising Seniors Rising seniors can take advantage of College of DuPage’s College Jumpstart program, which offers up to four transferrable general education courses—providing an affordable way to earn early college credit, explore COD’s campus, and strengthen their transcript with a 50% in-district tuition discount. Registration opens March 11, and courses run June 15–August 8, for up to 12 credit hours. Thank You, Community Partners! We sincerely appreciate the many professionals who participated in Hinsdale South’s Career Day earlier this month. Your involvement inspires future pathways and strengthens our school-community partnership. Have News To Share? Let Us Know

Also take a moment to look forward to the many things that will come across your studies as the school year unfolds. Enjoy your thanksgiving break, but remember an engaging classroom is a place where students are active thinkers and teachers are helping them learn how to think. To create and maintain an engaging classroom requires a partnership in learning. As long as your child is healthy, please encourage school attendance. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers. While your child is in attendance, it is important that the center of their attention shall be on the curriculum that is in front of them. Mobile phones and other distractions should be out of sight and out of mind. Teachers, with your help, can create a classroom that is engaging and centered on a student's academic, social and emotional growth. It begins with your child attending school and setting aside personal property that is distracting to their learning. We thank: Our students who do their best to show up to class every day even when it isn’t easy. Our parents and guardians who encourage our students to bring their fire, lift their students when the struggle is real, and value our educators who provide high quality education Our teachers who go above and beyond to create an engaging classroom / learning environment where students can thrive. Our administrators who help us work together to ensure we are healthy and safe, feel a sense of community and experience the excitement of an engaging learning environment. Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need. May these days off be restful and healing. If your family or your child needs support, please reach out to your school counselor for help. They can help gather resources and engulf you in support through the school. We look forward to observing engaged students after Thanksgiving break. Thank you for partnering with us! Sincerely, William C. Walsh, Principal Hinsdale Central High School #HCBringYourFire Hinsdale Central Grade 11 & 12 Students We have an opportunity for our juniors and seniors students this school year! Hinsdale South Weekly Newsletter - November 20, 2025
Weekly Newsletter November 20, 2025 Dear Hornet Families - As we move into this season of gratitude, I want to pause and express how thankful I am for every member of our incredible Hinsdale South family. Hinsdale South is more than just a school; it’s a vibrant community powered by your dedication and spirit: To our devoted staff—thank you. Your passion, resilience, and commitment to our students inspire me daily. The care and creativity you bring to your work are the reasons our students grow, learn, and thrive. To our students - You are the heart of everything we do! Your energy, curiosity, and determination motivate us to strive for excellence every single day. Seeing you succeed - in the classroom, on the field, or through your creative pursuits - fills me with immense South Pride! To our families and community members- We are truly grateful for your partnership, support, and belief in our building and the trust you place in us to guide and nurture your students every day. This year has already been full of memorable achievements and collaborative moments, proving the collective power of our community. These moments, big and small, are a powerful testament to the strength and spirit of our Hinsdale South community. When we return, let’s keep the momentum going! Please help us emphasize the importance of strong attendance. Every day of school is a critical opportunity for students to learn, as well as connect to their peers and our Hinsdale South staff. I wish all of you a restful and joyful break. May it be a time to disconnect, reflect on your own blessings, and enjoy time with loved ones. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey and continuing to make Hinsdale South the special place it is. I am deeply grateful to be a part of this journey with you. With South Pride, Dr. Kari Peronto Principal, Hinsdale South Campus Entry and Security To support our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment, our Weapons Detection System (WDS) will be operational for one day during the week of December 1 - 5. Please note that the specific date of this activation will not be announced in advance. To ensure a quick and efficient entry process on the day the WDS is in use, all students must utilize one of the two main entry points: Door 1: Circle Drive entrance (off Clarendon Hills Road) Door 9: Gymnasium entrance (off Elm Street) We strongly encourage all students to plan accordingly and arrive at school early. Standard tardy policies will be enforced for students who are late. Thank you for your cooperation and continued partnership in ensuring the safety and support of all members of the South learning community. Final Exam Schedule First-semester final examinations will be held from Tuesday, December 16 to Thursday, December 18, 2025. Please note that Friday, December 19 is an Emergency Day. Should circumstances arise that impact our ability to hold a final exam on one of the three previous days, Friday, December 19 will be an attendance day. If you plan on traveling, please note that Friday, December 19 is a potential student attendance day until 1:00 PM. The expectation is that students are in attendance each period (unless otherwise noted) and take their final exam during their designated time frame. Please note that students are NOT approved to reschedule exams to take them early for vacations or other personal reasons. For more information regarding final exams, click here. Counseling Department College Visits Students wishing to visit with a college representative should sign up on SchooLinks and then come to the Counseling Office to get a pass for the visit from Mrs. Alvarez. Passes need to be signed by the teacher whose class the student will be missing. Students must have this pass in order to attend the college visit. Without it, they will not be admitted to the meeting. The College Rep Visit will usually last about 30- 45 minutes. Friday, November 21 11:40 AM - Northern Illinois University Monday, November 24 9:50 AM - West Point Academy College of DuPage - College Jumpstart An opportunity for rising senior high school students in College of DuPage’s region for up to four Gen Ed courses that are easily transferable to most institutions. Sign up for an information session on Zoom at cod.edu/college-jumpstart. ● December 8 at 7 PM ● January 13 at 6 PM ● February 12 at 7 PM ● March 10 at 6 PM Faculty/Staff Highlights Becca Wasilewski - World Language & Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher The World Language Department is excited to have Becca Wasilewski join our team as our sole American Sign Language teacher. She has been a teacher for 12 years in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department housed at Hinsdale South until this year, having transitioned to teaching ASL full-time at both campuses as a new traveling D86 teacher. We are excited about the future prospects for our ASL program with Mrs. Wasilewski’s knowledge and personal experiences to guide our program. Outside of school, Mrs. Wasilewski has three children who keep her very busy outside of school cheering them on in all their activities, and her family loves to go to the beach when they can. During her rare free time, Mrs. Wasilewski also enjoys reading. Lubka Banov - Multilingual Paraprofessional Lubka Banov serves as a Multilingual Paraprofessional, supporting multilingual learners across classrooms and helping them develop confidence, language skills, and independence. This is her first year at South, but she was at Central for a few years prior. She brings warmth, patience, and enthusiasm to her work each day, fostering an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds feel valued and supported. Lubka is passionate about working with students from different cultures and learning about their unique backgrounds. Lubka speaks six languages—English, Bulgarian, Russian, Serbian, Macedonian, and some Greek—and uses her multilingual skills to connect with students in meaningful ways. She views her role as a mutual learning experience in which both she and her students grow through shared cultural exchange. Outside of school, Lubka enjoys traveling and spending quality time with her family. A fun fact about her is that she and her family love puzzles—the largest one they’ve completed together had 3,000 pieces and was finished in just two weeks! Lubka Banov’s dedication, multilingual expertise, and genuine care for her students make her an invaluable member of the multilingual learning community. Mireya Duffy - Multilingual Paraprofessional Mireya Duffy serves as a dedicated paraprofessional in the Multilingual Learners Department at Hinsdale South. This is her first year in the district! She plays an essential role in supporting students’ academic and language development, helping them build confidence and reach their full potential. What she enjoys most about her work is getting to know each student personally and witnessing their academic and personal growth over time. Mireya was inspired to pursue a career in education by her desire to help others succeed. She is passionate about creating opportunities for students to thrive, both academically and socially, and finds great fulfillment in guiding them toward their goals. Having learned English as a second language herself, Mireya brings a unique perspective to her role. She understands firsthand the challenges and triumphs of language learning and credits her own teachers for shaping her success. Mireya speaks English and Spanish, and her bilingual background allows her to connect deeply with students and appreciate the diverse perspectives they bring to the classroom. With her empathy and first-hand understanding of language learning, Mireya helps create a classroom environment where multilingual students feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed. HC Weekly E-Blast November 13, 2025
Weekly E-Blast | November 13, 2025 Marching Band & Color Guard Our marching band and color guard students travelled to New York City this past weekend and week to celebrate Veteran's Day. The students performed at multiple venues. They packed a lot into 4 days: a clinic at Rutgers, a performance aboard USS Intrepid Aircraft Museum, seeing The Outsiders, a meet and greet with Broadway stars, and of course, the Veteran’s Day Parade right up 5th Avenue! The students did great and a special thank you to the amazing chaperones! Thanks for supporting our trip! Dear Red Devil Families: As we lead into Thanksgiving break and take a few days to be with family and friends, I hope you find time to treasure the opportunities, achievements and celebrations that were beholden to you throughout this school year. We have much to celebrate, to be thankful for, and recognize the service we can offer others. Please take note that Friday, December 19 is an Emergency Day. Should circumstances arise that impact our ability to hold a final exam on one of the three previous days, Friday, December 19 will be an attendance day to host exams from that day. If you plan on traveling, please note attendance on Friday, December 19 is a potential student attendance day until 1:00 PM. The expectation is that students are in attendance each period (unless otherwise noted) and take their final exam during their designated time frame. The only exception to this is if a student has three final exams on a given day, they can reschedule an exam to a different day through the Dean's Office. Please note, that students are NOT approved to reschedule exams to take them early for vacations or other personal reasons.
