We have much to celebrate, to be thankful for, and recognize the service we can offer others. Also take a moment to look forward to the many things that will come across your studies as the school year unfolds. Enjoy your thanksgiving break, but remember an engaging classroom is a place where students are active thinkers and teachers are helping them learn how to think. To create and maintain an engaging classroom requires a partnership in learning. As long as your child is healthy, please encourage school attendance. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers. While your child is in attendance, it is important that the center of their attention shall be on the curriculum that is in front of them. Mobile phones and other distractions should be out of sight and out of mind. Teachers, with your help, can create a classroom that is engaging and centered on a student's academic, social and emotional growth. It begins with your child attending school and setting aside personal property that is distracting to their learning. We thank: Our students and their families who do their best to show up to class every day even when it isn’t easy. Our teachers who go above and beyond to create an engaging classroom / learning environment where students can thrive. Our administrators who help us work together to ensure we are healthy and safe, feel a sense of community and experience the excitement of an engaging learning environment. Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need. May these days off be restful and healing. If your family or your child needs support, please reach out to your school counselor for help. They can help gather resources and engulf you in support through the school. We look forward to observing engaged students after Thanksgiving break. Thank you for partnering with us! Sincerely, William C. Walsh, Principal Hinsdale Central High School #HCBringYourFire Bus Route 1 - Stop 59th & Holmes Students that are assigned to the 59th & Holmes stop will be moved to Route 14 due to overcrowding issues. The new stop will be moved starting November 20, 2024 and the approximate time the bus will arrive is 7:20 AM. All students will be reissued a new ID and will need to ride their new bus assignment. Q2 Make A Difference Nominations Due Friday, December 6th At Hinsdale Central, many teachers and staff members go above and beyond to engage students or provide extra support to others in our Red Devil community. They teach classes, advise clubs, coach teams, and provide services that “make a difference” at our school. If you know of a teacher or staff member whose dedication or kindness has had a positive and lasting impact on you or a student, we invite you to nominate them. When describing why this individual deserves the award, please be as specific as possible. Although applications must be signed, those who submit nominations will remain anonymous. Please nominate them for a Make A Difference Award by completing the form found here . Anyone can make a nomination! The PTO presents six recipients with Make A Difference Awards each quarter. The awards include our appreciation with a personalized certificate and $100 gift card. Nominations received by Friday, December 6th, 2024 will be considered for the second quarter awards. Those nominated who have not received an award within the past 8 quarters are eligible for this current quarter. You can view a list of past Make A Difference recipients here . If you have any questions, please contact Denys Kang, Grace Shin, or Kristin Tu at makeadifference@hcpto.org . Hinsdale South Weekly Newsletter - November 21, 2024
Weekly Newsletter November 21, 2024 Dear Hornet Families: At Hinsdale South, we are grateful and thankful for each of you! As we lead into Thanksgiving break and take a few days to be with family and friends, I hope you find time to treasure the achievements and opportunities that were provided to you throughout this school year, thus far. We have much to celebrate, to be thankful for, and recognize the service we can offer others. Also, students, take a moment to look forward to the many things that will come across your studies as the school year unfolds. Enjoy your thanksgiving break, but remember why we are Hornets, and what South Pride means to us. We want to thank: Our students who do their best to show up to class every day even when it is not easy. Our teachers and staff who go above and beyond to help make school a welcoming learning environment where students can thrive and be their authentic selves. Our administrators who help us work together to ensure we are safe, feel a sense of community and experience the excitement of an engaging learning environment. Our families who support all that we do as a passionate, thriving school community. When we return to school after break, please encourage school attendance. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn, as well as connect to their peers and our Hinsdale South staff. I am thankful for each of you, and we look forward to seeing everyone after Thanksgiving break! Sincerely, Dr. Kari Peronto, Principal Student Highlights Hinsdale South Civics class Students in a Hinsdale South Civics class proudly celebrated Veterans Day by raising $750 for the Disabled American Veterans organization. Their efforts helped secure 72 American flags displayed on our school grounds in honor of our veterans. The students also gathered enough funds and donations to send 60 stockings filled with essentials and treats to active-duty military members serving our country. This initiative reflects the students' gratitude and commitment to supporting those who serve, both past and present. Staff Highlights Kim Stansbury - World Language Department Kim Stansbury is the newest full-time member of the World Language Department. This year she is teaching Spanish 1 and 2; the past two years she taught part-time with just Spanish 1 classes. Before joining our team in 2022, she stayed home with her two daughters for several years, but prior to that, Kim taught social studies for 12 years - 2 at the high school level and 10 at the middle school level. Across her various roles and experiences, Kim has shown herself to be a staunch student advocate and a lifelong learner. Kim cares about not just her own students but all kids and is therefore an active member of our Building Equity Action Team. When she taught social studies, Kim was a fellow of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and went on an educational trip to Germany and Poland. Because of Kim’s bilingualism and caring nature, she was effectively able to converse with a man and his daughter about his WWII experiences and postwar life in Poland and Spain. He ended up being Kim’s paper pen pal for several years! As a lifelong learner, Kim is currently working on her English-as-a-second Language endorsement and chats with a video pen pal in Argentina regularly to further strengthen her own conversational Spanish skills. Emergency Support Community Action Team The Community Action Team is a community based organization that serves as advocates for students and families. This past weekend, a number of our families from Hinsdale South were impacted by an apartment building fire. These families are currently displaced and are in need of our community support. In the link, gift cards can be purchased to help these families in need. For more information on the Community Action Team, please click on the following link. November e-Newsletter: We Work Better, Together
D86 E-Newsletter November 14, 2024 Message From the Superintendent: We Work Better, Together To the District 86 Community, We’re nearly one third of our way through the school year, and winter and holidays will soon be upon us. This month, I want to thank you for working as a united community to benefit the students we serve. Our primary focus, as always, is the education and well-being of our students. As I mentioned last month, that focus manifests itself most directly and importantly in our classrooms, in all the daily and weekly interactions our teachers and staff have with individuals and groups of students. And to make our classrooms effective, there are many things that occur behind the scenes to enable that. Staff need to be hired, trained, and supported. Processes and procedures need to be in place to coordinate, fund, manage, and lead our work—in both our school buildings and at the administrative offices. And we do that as a public entity in a democratic setting so that our families and taxpayers have a voice in our efforts. While there will always be challenges and distractions that arise, a key part of my work is to ensure the entire D86 system maintains that focus on our students, their learning, and their well being. As I outlined in a recent communication about our performance on the Illinois Report Card, we have much to be proud of. Our students are thriving in many areas. On the SAT, our students at all levels are generally growing academically more in a school year than their nationwide peers—so we’re improving! But there’s always room for more improvement, and, as a system, we need to keep getting better at getting better. This will require the collective effort of everyone in our community – our teachers and staff, our parents, our school board members, and our community partners. It is with this spirit of collaboration in mind that I ask for your continued support and engagement. Your involvement plays a vital role in the success of our District. We need everyone’s thoughts, feedback, and energy as we continue to move forward. While I cannot promise that each stakeholder’s ideas will be implemented, I continue to commit to listening. I’ve spent as much time as possible meeting staff and parents, and have directed my team to be responsive to questions and ideas from parents and our community. (If you have something to say, or want to get together, please email mlach@hinsdale86.org) I have quickly learned that while people sometimes have different ideas about the paths to take, by and large our stakeholders all want the same things–academically rich schools, with opportunities for all students, and where everyone involved feels safe and supported In advance of School Board Member Day on Friday, I would also like to take a moment to express my gratitude to our dedicated members. I encourage you to reach out and thank them for their service to our district. Our board members are volunteers who give their time and expertise to ensure our schools remain on a path of continuous improvement. Their leadership is crucial in making the tough decisions that ultimately benefit our students. The future of our district is bright, but it will take all of us working together to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students. Together, we can ensure that every student in District 86 has the opportunity to succeed and thrive. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our students, our schools, and our community. Let’s continue to work together for the benefit of our students. Sincerely, Dr. Michael Lach Superintendent Here’s What Is Happening In District 86 Tomorrow: School Board Members Day On School Board Members Day (Friday, Nov. 15) we recognize the outstanding efforts of our elected Board of Education. This is our opportunity to thank the D86 Board of Education members and give them the recognition they have earned for serving as advocates striving for quality education for our students. D86 Science Offerings: Two Great Pathways Our latest Inside 86 videos dives into the two science pathways in District 86 (PCB/Physics-First & Biology-First) and explores while both pathways present outstanding opportunities for students. WATCH THE VIDEO 2023-2024 Illinois Report Card We are proud to share that both District 86 high schools once again received notable recognition on the Illinois Report Card for their continued commitment to academic excellence and student success. We encourage everyone in the District 86 community to view the results themselves and ask questions. JUST RELEASED: 2024 Illinois Report Card
District 86 Update October 30, 2024 To our District 86 Community, We are proud to share that both District 86 high schools once again received notable recognition on the Illinois Report Card for their continued commitment to academic excellence and student success. The Illinois Report Card is the state’s official source for information about public schools across Illinois and includes comprehensive data about each school in the state. The information, based predominantly on the 2023-24 school year, is compiled by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to allow families, community members, and other stakeholders access to data on academic performance, school environments, educators, students, and more. Use the following links to view the Hinsdale Central report card and the Hinsdale South report card. Hinsdale Central has maintained its “Exemplary” designation, as the high school continues to rank in the top 10 percent of schools statewide and has no underperforming student groups. Hinsdale South was once again designated as a "Commendable" school, which means the school has no underperforming student groups, maintains a graduation rate greater than 67 percent, and does not fall within the top 10 percent of schools statewide. These ratings are generated from eight individually weighed measures. Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South’s scores are displayed below. Year-to-year changes Of the eight individually weighted metrics that contribute to the summative designation of each school, three deserve special mention due to changes from the preceding year. District 86 students consistently score higher on the SAT than most Illinois high schools, and 2024 was no exception. But last year, districtwide, we saw a small decline year-over-year in the proportion of students meeting or exceeding standards in both English language arts and mathematics on the SAT. We continue to explore our data to understand the root causes of this change, and remain convinced that focusing on curriculum and instruction is a critical component of our path forward On the Illinois Science Assessment, the proportion of students designated as proficient or exemplary in District 86 reached an all-time high. That is a testament to the hard work and high expectations of our science teachers and departments. Our chronic absenteeism rate continues to fall, though absenteeism remains higher than it did pre-pandemic. Chronic absenteeism is based on the total number of school absences for any reason, even “excused” absences. This improvement is a credit to the partnership between families and our schools, and we should all commit to building on this trend to continue these improvements. The Illinois Report Card is filled with more data than we could possibly explain in a single email. We encourage everyone in the District 86 community to view the results themselves and ask questions. I’ve spoken with the Board and community a few times about how important it is to me that the District, together, identifies it’s “North Star”, and I believe that part of that definition must include a small set of metrics that matter most. Almost certainly, the Illinois Report Card metrics will be part of that discussion. As that work unfolds, and as we begin to use that information to set goals and identify strategies for the coming years, we will continue to keep you informed. Thank you for your continued partnership in our students’ education. Sincerely, Dr. Michael Lach Superintendent
