  • Message from the Superintendent: Winter Break Schedu...

Dear BUSD Families and Staff, As we wrap up an incredible first half of the school year, I would like to wish our entire Barstow Unified community a very happy holiday season and a restful winter break. Looking back on this semester, one of my greatest joys has been witnessing the  "lightbulb moments"  happening across our classrooms in literacy. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that spark in a student’s eyes when a new word clicks or a story comes to life. I encourage you to keep those lightbulbs shining by sharing a favorite book over the break! 📚💡 Please note our Winter Break schedule: 🗓️  Winter Break: December 22nd – January 2nd 🏫  School Sites: All schools will be closed during this time. 🏢  District Offices: Open with limited staff on Dec. 22nd, 23rd, 29th, 30th, 31st, and Jan. 2nd. 🎒  Return Date: We look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday, January 5, 2026. Wishing you and your family a safe, warm, and happy holiday. Enjoy the well-deserved time with your loved ones! Sincerely, Deanna Swearingen, Superintendent, Barstow Unified School District

  • Thanksgiving Message from Superintendent Deanna Swea...

As we approach Thanksgiving, a time traditionally dedicated to gratitude and reflection, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for each member of our district community. Your dedication, resilience, and partnership make our schools a nurturing environment where every student can thrive. This year's focus is on literacy—an area where we see countless lightbulb moments. When students finally understand a new word, decode a tricky sentence, or share a story of their own, that spark ignites a lifelong love of reading and learning. These moments of discovery are powerful and transformative, fueling confidence and expanding horizons. Let’s continue to inspire these illuminations of understanding and foster a love of literacy in every child. Together, we can create an environment where all students experience the joy of learning and the thrill of those bright, breakthrough moments. I also hope you find time over the upcoming break to enjoy some relaxation with family and friends—making memories and giving thanks. May this time be filled with warmth, gratitude, and rejuvenation. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment. Here’s to celebrating our achievements and nurturing many more lightbulb moments throughout the year. As a reminder, Thanksgiving Break is November 24th-28th. Students and staff return from Thanksgiving break Monday, December 1st.
