Weekly School News Dear Blue Waves Families, Another wonderful week! May 29, 2026 Thank you to all our students, families, staff, and community partners who make these special moments possible. Go Blue Waves! With Blue Wave Pride, Bob Hagan Superintendent of Schools Riverhead Central School District   This Week's Updates: Aquebogue Our second-grade students welcomed a special in-school visit from the Long Island Aquarium, bringing marine life and science learning directly into our classrooms. Students had the opportunity to explore fascinating sea creatures and deepen their understanding of aquatic ecosystems through this engaging hands-on experience. Our fourth graders traveled back in time during their field trip to the Colonial Life program at Blydenburgh County Park. Through interactive activities and historical demonstrations, students experienced life during the colonial era and brought their social studies learning to life. Finally, we also enjoyed a fantastic Field Day for all students! The day was filled with teamwork, sportsmanship, laughter, and plenty of fun as students participated in a variety of outdoor activities and games. Thank you to our staff, volunteers, and families who helped make the day such a memorable success.   Phillips This week, Phillips Avenue Kindergarten through fourth-grade students, teachers, and our community came together to participate in our annual Field Day. Each class took part in a variety of events, supporting one another while enjoying an exciting and memorable day together. Families filled the sidelines, cheering on their children and their children’s classmates as classes competed against one another within their grade levels. In true Phillips tradition, the culminating event featured our fourth graders alongside the Flanders Fire Department. Students — and even a few teachers — gathered in front of the fire truck as firefighters cooled everyone off with the fire hose. Judging by the attached pictures, it is clear that an amazing day was had by all! A special thank you to our staff, families, PTO, and the Flanders Fire Department for helping make this year’s Field Day such a wonderful success for our students. While our kindergarten through fourth-grade students were enjoying Field Day, our Pre-K students had an exciting learning experience during their field trip to Fink’s Farm. Students loved seeing and learning about the animals, enjoyed the hayride, and were thrilled to plant their own basil to take home. It was a wonderful day filled with hands-on learning, exploration, and fun memories for our youngest learners!    Riley This week at Riley Avenue, our Physical Education teachers partnered with our entire staff and the Parents Association of Riley Avenue (PARA) to conduct our annual Field Days. From bubble machines in Pre-Kindergarten to egg races to the always competitive Tug of War, the students and staff demonstrated the teamwork, sportsmanship, and drive that make Field Day such a great opportunity to celebrate those traits. Special thanks to Coach Schmachtenberg, Coach Steele, and Coach Savitz for leading the way, and to our families and Riverhead High School Athletes Helping Athletes for cheering on our students every step of the way!   Roanoke This was a fun week at Roanoke Avenue. On Thursday, our amazing music teacher, Ms. Kutner, directed our 3rd graders in an outdoor Recorder Concert for our 3rd-grade families. They played recorder classics like”Hot Cross Buns” and “Old McDonald Had a Farm” along with some modern rock songs like “Eye of the Tiger”. The 3rd graders played awesome! ​ The week ended with our annual Field Day! The students had a lot of fun, worked together, and displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Thank you to our PE Coaches, Mrs. Heidtmann and Ms. Orfanitopoulos, for putting together such a wonderful event for our students!    Pulaski This week, Pulaski Street School had the pleasure of welcoming our incoming 5th-grade families for 4th-grade orientation. Families had the opportunity to learn about life at Pulaski, hear about our programs and extracurricular opportunities, and gain an understanding of our school-wide expectations through the lens of Pulaski PRIDE: Patience, Respect, Inclusivity, Determination, and Empathy. Throughout the evening, families explored the building, visited key areas of the school, and had the opportunity to ask questions as they prepared for the transition to 5th grade. A special thank you goes to our Student Council members, who served as tour guides and ambassadors, helping visitors navigate the building while sharing their experiences as Pulaski students.  In addition, our 5th-grade students had the opportunity to hear from guest speaker Kayla Myers, who shared the history and significance of Juneteenth and introduced students to the annual Juneteenth Essay Contest. Her presentation provided valuable insight into the importance of reflection, learning from history, and celebrating freedom, while encouraging students to use their voices through writing.   Riverhead Middle School Students in Mrs. Orlowski’s seventh-grade science classes celebrated Earth Day by creating informative and creative posters to raise awareness of important environmental issues affecting our planet, including fossil fuels, deforestation, pollution, microplastics, and overbreeding of animals. As part of the project, students were also challenged to identify realistic solutions that could help address these global concerns. Each class held its own poster competition, with the winning student earning a Certificate of Achievement and an ice cream sundae. Students did a wonderful job showcasing both their creativity and scientific understanding while engaging in some fun and friendly competition. The projects highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and encouraged students to think critically about how they can make a positive impact on the world around them.   Riverhead High School The Riverhead High School Music Department once again showcased the incredible talent and dedication of our students and staff during this year’s Honors Concert on May 27th. Families, staff, and community members were treated to an outstanding evening of music that highlighted the strength and continued growth of our performing arts programs. The evening featured performances by the Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Ms. Burns, the Wind Ensemble directed by Mr. Randazzo, the Chamber Choir led by Ms. Wahlen, and the Jazz Band under the direction of Ms. Crespo. Each ensemble demonstrated exceptional preparation, musicianship, and pride in their performance. Throughout the evening, families and community members shared many positive comments regarding the quality of the performances and the pride they feel in Riverhead’s music programs. Nights like these serve as a reminder of the strong traditions within our schools and the meaningful experiences our students continue to build upon through the arts.   Universal Pre-kindergarten Program The Riverhead Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program recently celebrated its very first field trip with an exciting visit to Fink’s Family Farm in Wading River! The students enjoyed a scenic hayride around the farm while learning how different food crops are grown. The barnyard adventure was a massive hit, giving children an up-close look at an amazing variety of animals, including sheep, goats, peacocks, horses, cows, pigs, emus, chickens, rabbits, bulls, and llamas. To wrap up the educational fun, the farmers hosted an interactive plant lesson where the students learned about seedlings and even got to plant a crop of their own to take home. The day ended with pure joy as our students explored the farm's play areas—conquering the slides, climbing on the fire trucks and tractors, and diving into the corn pit and jump pillow.
