The District Download Newsletter: May 2026
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE As we enter May, we find ourselves at a meaningful intersection of reflection and celebration. The close of a school year always brings a mix of emotions—pride in what has been accomplished, gratitude for the dedication of our people, and excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead. This year has been one marked by growth, resilience, and achievement across our district. Our students have demonstrated not only academic progress but also perseverance, creativity, and a strong sense of community. From the classroom to the stage, the athletic field to service projects, their accomplishments reflect the commitment of an entire school community working together. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our teachers and staff, whose efforts have a lasting impact on our students' lives. Their passion and professionalism continue to shape an environment where every child can succeed. To our families, thank you for your ongoing support and partnership—your involvement plays a vital role in student success. May is also a time to recognize important milestones. We celebrate our graduating seniors as they prepare to take their next steps, carrying with them the knowledge, skills, and values they have developed during their time with us. We are confident they will represent us well in whatever paths they choose. In addition, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to this year’s retirees. The event highlighted the real-life impact of distracted and impaired driving using Phillip Lutzenkirchen’s life as a powerful motivator to make good choices. “I knew immediately this was an opportunity we needed to take advantage of,” said Principal Daniel Farris. “Hosting the Summit at Prattville High School just three days before our prom allows us to reinforce this life‑saving message at a time when it matters most. The District Download Newsletter: April 2026
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE As spring arrives and we begin to see the finish line of another school year, I want to take a moment to thank you for the support, encouragement, and partnership you show our students and schools each day. I know I’ve said it before, but I think this is something that can be repeated as often as possible. Our people are the backbone of our district and broader community. Whether you’re a student, parent, teacher, or community supporter, your partnership is what keeps ACS moving forward. April is synonymous with state testing. While these assessments are an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year, they shouldn’t cause extra anxiety or stress. Families are encouraged to be a cheerleader for their children, ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat well at home or school, keep routines consistent, dress comfortably, and arrive on time. Confidence and reassurance from home go a long way in helping students perform at their best. The district is also proud to launch our new “No Absence April” initiative. We’re giving away weekly and monthly prizes to students with perfect attendance to help incentivize those mornings when they just don’t feel like getting up and moving. We want to encourage students to be present at school every day.. We continue to actively plan for the future of Autauga County Schools, including developing a facilities plan to address our district's infrastructure needs. At this time, we are working closely with state, federal, and local partners to secure funding agreements that will allow us to begin moving these critical projects forward, making a generational impact in our community. I hope to provide you with more information on this during our State of the Schools presentation this year. The State of the Schools event is one that I look forward to every year. I truly believe the virtual town hall-style format we’ve designed is a great way to hear directly from you about any questions or concerns you may have without taxing your calendars. During the meeting, I'll cover key district and school information and anything that's on your mind. A date hasn’t been set yet, so stay tuned for additional details. I encourage our students, teachers, and families to finish strong. In a season where it can be difficult to stay focused, complete assignments, and maintain strong attendance habits, let’s make an intentional effort to do just that because every day of instruction counts, especially as we approach the end of the academic year. Why Not Us, PERFECT ATTENDANCE = PRIZES DURING NO ABSENCE APRIL CAMPAIGN Autauga County Schools launched No Absence April earlier this week— and excitement is building! Consistent attendance is key to student success, so ACS is making it rewarding with weekly and monthly prizes to help students get motivated. Who’s ready to show up, stay engaged, and win big? Learn more >> Weekly Drawings: Students with perfect attendance at the end of each week will be entered to win one of 30 prizes valued at $30 each. Grand prize winners will also be recognized at the May board meeting. Designed as both an innovative teaching tool and a resource for the surrounding agricultural community, the agriscience facility will help students better understand modern livestock production while preparing them for careers in agriculture and related industries. The District Download Newsletter: March 2026
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE As spring arrives and the days begin to get longer, there’s a renewed sense of energy across our district. At the same time, this stretch of the school year can also bring a sense of monotony as routines settle in. I encourage everyone — students, staff, and families — to stay engaged and continue pushing forward. Success happens at the crossroads of hard work and perseverance. If we don’t keep going, we may miss the experiences and opportunities waiting just around the next corner of life. That forward momentum not only helps us finish this school year strong — it also fuels the important work already underway for 2026–2027. Spring is naturally a season of both reflection and anticipation. It invites us to celebrate progress while also asking the question that continues to guide us: Why not us? This “What if we could do better?” mantra has become more than a catchphrase — it is a commitment to growth, improvement, and a student-first mindset. It’s exciting to visit our campuses and see so much engagement from everyone! Whether it’s peeking into classrooms, taking in a game, watching a play rehearsal, attending an art show, or observing the dozens of other activities, I am reminded of the heart and dedication that define our district. That same spirit is strengthened by something research consistently affirms: family engagement is one of the most powerful influences on a child’s success in school. When families communicate with teachers, reinforce expectations at home, and participate in school events, students grow more confident, motivated, and prepared to learn. Strong partnerships between home and school build trust, create consistency, and ensure that children know they are surrounded by adults who believe in them — both at home and at school. Because of that shared commitment, I am incredibly proud of all we have accomplished. Even more, I am confident in where we are headed. As we move forward together, we will continue to challenge ourselves, break barriers, and pursue even greater success. So we will keep asking — and answering — the question that drives us: Why not us? Why Not Us, NEW SCHOOL VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Autauga County Schools is rolling out Circool, a new way to streamline visitor check-ins, manage event entry, and support reunification efforts if ever needed. This new system will help safeguard access to school campuses while students are present, adding an extra layer of security and ensuring a safer environment for the entire school community. The District Download Newsletter: February 2026
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE The start of a new year fills us with excitement for the possibilities ahead. Many of us set resolutions with the best intentions, yet often find ourselves falling short—not from a lack of desire, but because we don’t always have the right tools or support in place. The same can be true in education. I want us to continue to drive forward with careful planning and intentionality. Like I’ve said many times before, somebody has to be at the top, so why not us? The start of the spring semester brings a sense of renewal and focus on the future, specifically the upcoming school year. We’re already planning to build on this year’s success to make next year even better. The district’s strategic plan remains our guiding document. We are nearly at the halfway point of the five-year plan, and we’re making meaningful progress toward our goals in academic achievement, quality personnel, fiscal responsibility, safe & healthy learning environments, and stakeholder relations. I look forward to sharing more about our progress in the months ahead. As we approach state testing season, schools are actively preparing students for these assessments. These are not graded tests but rather a look into how effective our classroom instruction has been during the last year. The data generated by these tests allows us to make changes where necessary to help students reach their full potential. In short, these standardized tests are our accountability system, and are most effective when teachers, administrators, and families partner together in support of the students taking the assessments. Your support in helping students arrive rested, prepared, and on time is greatly appreciated and contributes to their success. As we look to the future, registration for the 2026-2027 school year is approaching quickly. ACS is launching a more efficient, user-friendly enrollment process. This improved system streamlines registration for both new and returning students, allowing our schools to better serve families while ensuring accurate and timely information. We will continue to give local families the option to choose the best school environment for their children with our In-District, Out-of-District, and Flexible Military Enrollment programs. We continue to hear heartwarming stories about the difference our teachers and programs are making in our students' lives. I encourage you to share your ACS experiences with others because your stories help highlight the many successes happening in our classrooms and schools and play an important role in strengthening community pride and trust. I am incredibly proud of all we have achieved, and I have no doubt that we will continue to break barriers and achieve even greater success as we move forward. Why Not Us, 2026-2027 KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT Adventure awaits! Kindergarten registration is now open for the 2026-2027 school year. Families with children turning five by September 1 of this year are encouraged to take the first big step toward a bright future by enrolling online today. The District Download Newsletter: December 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE As we enter the heart of the holiday season, I want to extend my warmest wishes to our students, families, staff, and community. December is always a magical time across our district, and this year is no exception! From festive classroom activities to heartwarming winter programs, our students have truly embraced the spirit of the season. Walking through our buildings, you can feel the sparkle in the air—handmade decorations lining the walls, the sound of music drifting from rehearsals, and students proudly sharing acts of kindness as part of holiday service projects. Their enthusiasm reminds us why this time of year feels so special. I am pleased to share encouraging news regarding our district's performance on the recently published State Report Card. ACS earned an overall district score of 87, the highest since the COVID-19 pandemic and the second-highest since the state began tracking data under the current accountability system. We tied for the second-highest score in the River Region area! This year's report card results show strong, steady growth across many schools, with an increase of 3 points over the previous year. We experienced hard fought gains in several areas that I believe is due in part to the relationships that we enjoy in our district - teachers who love and care for students like their own, parents who partner with schools to provide support at home, collaborative learning between classrooms and schools, and seasoned administrators who've spent years getting to know their communities while building lasting relationships built on trust and transparency. As we prepare to close out the calendar year, please remember the importance of rest. I encourage families to take time during the winter break to relax, recharge, and enjoy moments together. Whether your traditions include gatherings, faith-based celebrations, cozy nights at home, or simply a few quiet days away from the routine, I hope your break is filled with peace and joy. On behalf of Autauga County Schools, I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons. May your days be merry and bright—and may the season fill your hearts with warmth and wonder. Why Not Us, ACS REPORT CARD REFLECTS HIGHEST SCORE SINCE COVID Big news! Autauga County Schools earned an overall score of 87, which is up three points over last year, making it the highest score since COVID and second-highest since letter grade reporting began in 2018. “These results show that our people, programs, and processes are working," said Superintendent Woodfin. Our teachers, staff, students, and families continue to pull together to make learning a priority. We're proud of the progress, and we're even more excited about the future for our students.” Read more >> ELA & Math Proficiency Gains Graduation Rate: Up 3.6% CCR Rate: Up 9.89% EL Proficiency: Up more than 10% Academic Achievement Increase Chronic Absenteeism: Down 4.88% to a new low of 9.41% AEF CONTINUES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH ANNUAL GRANT PROGRAM Thank you to the Autauga Education Foundation for investing in public education! The District Download Newsletter: November 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE We’ve just wrapped up the first nine weeks of school, which means more than a quarter of this year is already complete! Whether it’s seeing my children grow and mature or reconnecting with former students and players who are now parents in our school district, I’m reminded that we must make the most of today by building on yesterday, seizing the opportunities presented to us now to improve tomorrow. I'm so thankful to work alongside dedicated staff and committed families that continually challenge students to take advantage of the academic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities that allow them to chase their dreams! We've seen a lot of great things happen during the first few months of the academic year — everything from outstanding achievement and recognition to the expansion of programs. I'm proud that we're finally constructing Billingsley School's new agriscience building - a livestock teaching lab that will provide even more opportunities for secondary students. Last month's groundbreaking ceremony showcased our commitment to educational excellence and career readiness by fostering innovation, sustainability, and hands-on learning in the animal science field. In addition to this construction project, there are dozens of smaller projects underway that prioritize clean, safe, and functional learning environments for our students, including flooring, fencing, painting, erosion control, restroom & athletic space renovations, roofs, and playground enhancements. I encourage you to look around your child's school to see the improvements first-hand. We're fortunate to have funded the majority of these projects by taking advantage of legislative grants and one-time use funds that aren't guaranteed from year to year. While we've been able to check off some smaller projects, there are still budgetary constraints and concerns about long-term funding of facilities and maintenance as we move into FY2026. With local revenues as the only flexible funding source, the decline in sales tax revenue over the last two years creates some concern about whether or not future earnings can cover the state and federal shortfalls. We're proud to partner with the Autauga Education Foundation, the district's non-profit fundraising organization. Their new 180 Campaign encourages individuals and local businesses to give $1 per day for the 180 days that make up a school year. When you give, you're not just donating; you're investing in brighter futures, as every single dollar stays local and goes right back into our schools. You can learn more or donate at autaugaef.org . Thank you for your continued trust and partnership in the work we do. The energy in our schools has been positive and focused, and I am incredibly proud of the dedication I see every day in our classrooms and hallways. Together, we are building a brighter future for all Autauga County students. Why Not Us, 2025-2026 TEACHERS OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED Autauga County School is immensely proud to announce the 2025-2026 school-level Teachers of the Year, recognizing 13 outstanding educators whose passion, dedication, and innovation have made a lasting impact on their students, colleagues, and school communities. "These teachers exemplify the heart of our mission—to empower every student to reach their full potential," said Lyman Woodfin, Superintendent. "Their commitment to excellence, creativity in the classroom, and care for their students set them apart." Of the 13 school-level winners, one elementary and one secondary teacher emerged as the district's overall winner. These incredible educators go above and beyond to inspire, challenge, and care for ACS students. The District Download Newsletter: October 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE In many ways, it feels like we started the new school year yesterday, but here we are already into the heart of the fall semester! This time of year is when classrooms really hit their stride - students are engaging deeply with their learning, routines are well established, and teachers are building on the foundational work laid earlier in the year. Thank you for helping us make attending school a priority! We saw record attendance at several schools last month. School isn't much fun without our students, so help us continue to encourage them, as regular attendance is one of the strongest predictors of student success. Let's work together to ensure that students are present, on time, and ready to learn each day. If your family is facing challenges that impact attendance, please reach out to your child's school for support. We're here for your family! Our district’s people, programs, and processes are what make Autauga County Schools home to me and so many of you, and leading these areas has been one of the highlights of this role. There is so much to celebrate in our district. As we dive into National Principals Month, I would like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to our district's outstanding leaders. These dedicated professionals work tirelessly to create safe, inclusive, and high-achieving learning environments. Join me in expressing gratitude to them throughout the month. October is also designated to celebrate our custodians, students with dyslexia & other special needs, school lunches & bus safety, unity, coaches, and so much more! Later this month, you will have a chance to see your child's progress when the Q1 report cards are released. Your focus on your child's academic growth is vital as we work together to help them achieve their full potential. I encourage families to stay connected with your child's teachers - whether through conferences, school events, or ParentSquare posts & messages - to be a partner in their success. Soon, students will begin assessments that help us better understand their progress and guide our instruction. These tools are not just about numbers - they help us tailor our approach to meet each child's unique needs. Your support at home makes a tremendous difference, and we appreciate all that you do. Let’s continue to work together to create the district we dream about - one rooted in history, tradition, inclusion, solidarity, and high expectations for all. The District Download Newsletter: September 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE As September settles in and we move deeper into the school year, I want to express my appreciation to you for what many have noted as the smoothest and most successful start to a new school year they can remember. This is high praise and only possible through the collaboration of all students, parents, guardians, and staff. The energy across our district has been incredible, and it’s clear that our community is united in its commitment to help us achieve our mission of educating the next generation of community and business leaders. Many of you know my eagerness to always jump to the next thing, but I know that for us to be successful, we must remain committed to what we’ve already got and celebrate the achievements we’ve already accomplished. To that end, I want to thank you for your patience as we worked hard to complete dozens of facility updates during the summer break. From modernized classrooms and updated exteriors to refreshed athletic spaces and improved security systems, these changes reflect our ongoing investment in student success and well-being. Every campus was the recipient of an upgrade project - everything from new roofs and restrooms to renovated walls, floors, fences, gym floors, and the list goes on! As we look ahead to what I know will be a successful school year, staying connected through ParentSquare is essential. With your partnership, we are confident that our students will continue to thrive and grow. Let’s keep the momentum going, support one another, and make this school year one to remember. Thank you again for all you do - every role, every effort, every day matters! Why Not Us, ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH The attendance challenge is here!
