November 17, 2023 In This Update: FY25 Budget Update Happy Thanksgiving Congratulations Veterans Day Celebrations Senior Citizens Visit to ABRHS Migrant Shelter Update School Happenings Cartwheel Webinar- Five Keys to Parenting Children with ADHD Boxborough's Tree Lighting Proscenium Circus presents The Music Man! FY25 Budget Update We have shared serious concerns about the FY25 budget with you previously. We continue to project a sizable deficit driven by: the same ongoing structural challenges that existed both of the last two years the impact of the current health insurance crisis on next year's budget and reserves the impact of state-wide, extraordinary increases to special education out-of-district tuitions, transportation services, and staff necessary to support our students in-district the impact of inflation on supplies, materials, technology, maintenance and capital Currently, the deficit is projected between $8.5M and $9M. We are working closely with our school committee and respective towns to make sure there is ongoing communication about the extraordinary challenge. We hope to begin discussing possible solutions to these challenges over the next several months, but it is clear there is insufficient revenue coming into the district for FY25 and without significant changes, we are concerned about the impact on students. You can learn more by reading out early budget presentation from November 2 (the numbers have changes since this presentation). You can also view school committee discussions of the budget on ActonTV's Youtube Channel . I encourage you to stay informed as we progress through a challenging budget season. Veterans Day Celebrations at AB Two of the great traditions at A-B are the Veteran's Day programs at the Douglas Elementary School and the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. This year, ABRHS continued this great tradition as students welcomed veterans from across the communities for a breakfast on Friday, November 10th. I had the privilege of joining a wonderful ceremony at Douglas Elementary, where we paid tribute to our Veterans. Each distinguished Veteran was announced by their Douglas Elementary attending family member. Paul Cartwright Courts reopens on Elm Street A big part of our Boardwalk Campus project was to refinish the Paul Cartwright Courts. The original courts were funded in large part through a CPC Grant and named after a former founding director of the A-B Travel Basketball Program Paul Cartwright. We are pleased to have been able to reconstruct these courts as part of the Boardwalk Campus Project. Senior Citizens Visit ABRHS We welcomed our senior citizens from Acton and Boxborough to the high school. They enjoyed a yellow school bus ride to and from, a tour of the high school, and a discussion with some of our students to share experiences of “what school is/was like then and now.” This was a fun way to build some intergenerational connections in our communities and also help our senior citizens understand more about the schools and our students. Migrant Shelter Update We continue planning to receive students as part of the shelter program. We anticipate the shelter will begin enrolling families starting on Monday, November 20th. We are ready to welcome our newest students into schools shortly after. I would like to thank the Town of Acton, Jennifer Faber, AB Director of DEI, and Katie Neville from the ABUW/ AB Resource Center for participating in a learning opportunity this past week for our current community members to learn about welcoming our newest community members. School Happenings One of my biggest joys of being a Superintendent is having an opportunity to visit classrooms and see our amazing educators and students in action. So far this year, I have visited 88 classrooms around the district from Pre-K through High School. I am thankful to all of our educators for the amazing opportunities they provide our students each day. A big thank you to the Boardwalk community, Gates, Douglas, & CHECP for all the donations. We collected 1,600 lbs. of food for local families. The Acton Food Pantry was very thankful for our support! The Blanchard PTF Fun Run was a huge success raising over $10,000 for enrichment grants! Other exciting news is that we have raised $140,000 towards our new Blanchard playground through individual donations, corporate matches, and grants! The Blanchard Community of Makers Quilt is up. Each person created their own 4 x 4-inch paper quilt patch during the STEAM challenge. Superintendent's Update-November 3, 2023
November 3, 2023 In This Update: Congratulations! 2024-2025 School Budget Multilingual Night School Visits Congratulations to ABRHS student Jessica Tao for winning Best Digital Art Submission in the High School Division of the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association contest “Building Global Perspectives through the Power of Language!” Congratulations to ABRHS Senior Timucin Erbas for being accepted to the American Junior Academy of Sciences (AJAS) Symposium for his project on Achieving Precision in Autonomous Rocket Landings with Convolutional Neural Networks and Control Algorithms ! Congratulations to the ABRHS marching band for winning a Silver Medal at the MICCA Finals! 2024-25 School Budget We've started planning for the 2024-25 budget. There's a projected $7 million gap between expected revenues and the costs of maintaining our current programs and services. The gap is driven mainly by extraordinary increases in health insurance costs and increases in state-wide special education tuition and transportation for out-of-district services. We're very early in this budget process and still working on how to close this gap. You can learn more: Check our website for more about our FY25 budget projections Watch the school committee discussion on Acton TV’s Youtube Channel We have a lot of work to do over the next few months. We will keep you updated as we move forward in closing the funding gap. Multilingual Night Multilingual Family Night took place on Thursday, October 26th from 6-7:30 in the Administration Building's Auditorium. At this event, we shared information about our Multilingual Education programming, ACCESS testing, and other topics raised by families. We also had MLE teachers present to discuss the use of school platforms such as Powerschool, ParentSquare, and ways to support language acquisition at home. Additionally, we were thrilled to have representatives from the AB Resource Center attend as well as Assistant Superintendent Deb Bookis and Amy Bisiewicz, Director of Educational Technology. School Visits I visited Blanchard Elementary and R.J. Grey Junior High School. I was inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm I witnessed at both schools. During my stay at Blanchard, I had an insightful tour through the K-3 classrooms and was truly impressed by the assistance and support provided to the students. At RJG, I got the opportunity to see 7th graders deeply engaged in their studies, demonstrating high levels of focus and commitment. In the context of extracurricular activities, I observed sports engagement, thriving clubs, and support through various tutoring programs. The admiration I hold for everyone involved in shaping these students' futures is immense and I look forward to seeing their ongoing progress. I have enjoyed my 70+ classroom visits and look forward to many more.

This was certainly a powerful message to our community. Thank you to those of you who participated. I also had an opportunity to host some school committee members for tours of McCarthy-Towne and Merriam Elementary Schools, RJ Grey, and the high school. The best part was getting to sneak a selfie with Kate’s 6th-grade class at Merriam! Migrant Shelter Update As you may know, Acton was recently designated as an emergency migrant shelter. We expect to welcome some new students into our schools during the first two weeks of November. Merriam, RJ Grey, and the high school are planning to receive students and we have leaders from across the District planning to welcome students and families into our schools. We have an amazing community that has 30 years of experience welcoming new families from all around the world and I have a lot of confidence that we will help our newest students and families become part of our community. You can read more about our planning in my update last night to our school committee. Principal Spotlight October is National Principal Month. State 911 Department Update The state has asked us to pass along information to families about two important, but lesser-known features of its Next Generation 9-1-1- system. The first is “ Text - to - 911 ”, which allows a person who is unable to speak or hear to communicate via text with a 9 - 1 - 1 dispatcher. The second is the “Silent Call Procedure'', which allows a person who is unable to speak to call 9 - 1 - 1, and when the call is answered by the dispatcher to press the following digits on their phone - 1 for police, 2 for fire, 3 for an ambulance - so that the dispatcher can immediately send help. These two features of the 9 - 1 - 1 system are valuable and can provide the ability to save a life when used. Community Coffee with Superintendent and School Committee Chairperson Our next virtual Community Coffee is scheduled for Monday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. We will be facilitating a conversation about course leveling at ABRHS. Please note this is not a presentation, but an opportunity to engage in conversation around the topic. Here is the zoom link. Statement on the recent attacks in Israel
October 12, 2023 AB Community, As many of us are aware, Israel suffered a terrorist attack by Hamas that targeted and continues to target civilians. We have many members of our community with ties to Israel, Palestine, and the greater Middle East Region have been and will continue to be impacted for time to come. This week, our leadership was able to speak with students, staff, and members of our community who have ties to the Middle East to understand how the attacks last weekend have impacted them. The impact on student and adult members of our Jewish community with whom we spoke is profound. The attack resulted in the highest number of deaths in a single day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust during World War II. This has left members of our Jewish community, including our students and staff, feeling targeted and isolated. History has also shown that in times of conflict, there is an accompanying rise in Antisemitism and we worry about how this will impact them and their children. Members of our Jewish community cannot be targeted and need to continue to see our schools as safe and supportive places for them. We also know that when terror organizations strike, there can be a misplaced rise in anti-Muslim attacks. There are members of our Muslim community who understandably worry about how this will impact them and their students as well. Members of our Muslim community cannot be targeted and need to feel that our schools are safe and supportive places for them. Our primary goal as a school community is to support our students and each other. All of our students need to feel physically and emotionally safe at school. We also need to help students, in age-appropriate ways, understand world events and learn how to discuss them productively to increase mutual understanding. Our students and staff’s physical and emotional safety and their education remain our focus as a District. We always encourage students to seek out our counselors or other trusted adults if they need individual support. We also have affinity groups at the high school where students can choose to process events in safe and supportive spaces. Families may use this resource to help you navigate conversations with your child. We also ask everyone to consider how online interactions can impact our students. Adults can be powerful positive models for students. Adults can also help to monitor students' online activity to help manage their access to age-appropriate content. This was an area of particular concern for students when we spoke with them: they are watching what we say and how we conduct ourselves. To be clear, as a District, we do not tolerate hate. Specifically, we will not tolerate Antisemitic or anti-Muslim comments. I ask for all members of our community’s help in maintaining this expectation. If you or your student hears something, please report it immediately to one of our staff. We will promptly investigate and end the behavior. Sincerely, Peter Light, Superintendent of Schools on behalf our of school and district leaders

Superintendent's Update - October 6, 2023
October 6, 2023 In This Update: Belonging the Classroom AB Resource Center & United Way Resource Fair National Principals Month High School Course Level Information DiwaliFest - October 8 ADL Walk Against Hate - October 15 Community Coffee with Superintendent and School Committee Chair I was around the district this week and saw a whole variety of classrooms and activities. I saw two things in particular that were great examples of how we are focused on increasing our students’ and families’ sense of belonging this year. Belonging in the Classroom Yesterday, I was in Mary Mathany’s 3rd Grade classroom and students had just completed a project that allowed them to share elements of their identity. To create the project, students interviewed various family members and shared parts of those interviews. They also created a visual of a hand that was made up of puzzle pieces from their identity. Many classrooms across our schools have students complete similar projects. Having students be able to bring their family traditions and values and elements of what is important to them personally is a major part of our work on belonging. AB Resource Center & United Way Resource Fair I also had an opportunity to visit the AB United Way’s annual Resource Fair. The Fair brings all of the ABUW partners in one place to showcase the many connections they support in our community. It was impressive and heart-warming to see all of these volunteers and resources come together. Seeing all of these community volunteer organizations reminded me why we chose to partner with the AB United way to open the A-B Resource Center. The Resource Center is a partnership between the schools and A-B United Way that provides centralized access to a variety of resources our students and families may need. I would encourage you to visit the Resource Center at 15 Charter Rd, call them at 978-264-4700 x19101 or visit the website to learn more about how the A-B Resource Center can help. I also welcome you to watch our brief video below to learn more. English Spanish Portuguese Hindi Russian : Ukrainia Principal Spotlight October is National Principals month. We want to thank our Principals for all they do and their commitment to our staff and students. I asked Principals to share one hope you want to share for your students and families and what is something non-school related that you would like to share with the community. This week and next, we highlight Larry Wolpe, Dr. Tricia O'Reilly, Joe Gibowicz, and Christina Gavin. To read more click here. High School Course Leveling Information Our high school faculty has been engaged in a multi-year process to study how altering the course levels at the school can: Allow students to have greater access and opportunities to study advanced-level courses, and Provide students with a broader range of learning and social interactions that will better prepare them for today’s world. The high school recently released a new website to keep our community informed about these changes. I encourage you to learn more about their work on the Course Leveling Website . The high school will be presenting their work to the School Committee on October 19th, and School Committee Chair Adam Klien, Principal Joanie Dean and I also invite you to join us for a conversation about this work on Monday, October 30th.
