With shorter days, colder weather, and the stresses of school and family life, maintaining good mental and physical health is crucial for everyone in the family. For students, winter can bring on increased stress due to exams, assignments, and seasonal changes. Encourage your child to maintain a balance between schoolwork, play, and rest. While this time of year can bring joy and connection, it can also create added stress, particularly for children and teenagers. From school responsibilities to family dynamics, the holidays can be overwhelming for kids of all ages. As parents, it's essential to help your children prioritize their mental health throughout the season. Here are some practical tips to support your child’s well-being, whether they're in kindergarten or high school, during the holiday season and the extended break. 1. Set Realistic Expectations The holidays are often associated with a flurry of activities—shopping, parties, family gatherings, and traveling. While these events are exciting, they can also lead to burnout. Set realistic expectations for your family about what you can truly manage. Limit the number of commitments you make, and allow space for rest and quiet time. This is particularly important for younger children and teenagers who might feel the weight of both social pressures and academic expectations. For Younger Kids: Create a simple, fun holiday schedule that includes time for both activities and rest. Help them manage their excitement by focusing on one thing at a time. For Teens: Encourage your teen to be selective about the social events they attend. High schoolers may feel pressure to maintain a busy social calendar, but it's important to remind them that taking time for themselves is equally valuable. 2. Maintain a Healthy Routine Routine provides a sense of stability, especially during a time when schedules can be unpredictable. Keeping some elements of your child’s regular routine—such as meal times, bedtimes, and chores—helps to minimize feelings of chaos and provides a sense of control. For Younger Kids: Even during the holidays, aim to maintain consistent sleep schedules. Sleep is essential for emotional regulation, and erratic sleep patterns can lead to irritability and stress. For Teens: Encourage your teen to continue exercising, eating balanced meals, and getting enough sleep. The stress of schoolwork, along with late nights and social events, can easily disrupt their routine, so a healthy balance is key to their mental well-being. 3. Model Healthy Coping Strategies Kids and teens often look to their parents for cues on how to handle stress. Demonstrating healthy coping strategies can help children learn how to manage their own emotions during stressful times. For Younger Kids: Use simple, calm language to talk about feelings of stress, and let them know it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or gentle stretching together to help them self-regulate. For Teens: Encourage mindfulness practices, such as journaling or meditation, and let them know that seeking professional help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness. If your teen is struggling with stress or anxiety, it’s okay to consider talking to a counselor or therapist. 4. Foster Connection and Communication While the holidays can be a time for family connection, they can also magnify feelings of isolation, particularly for teens or children who may have had disagreements or feel disconnected from their peers. Use this time to strengthen family bonds through meaningful interactions, whether it's a shared meal, a fun activity, or even just a quiet moment together. For Younger Kids: Set aside time for one-on-one activities with your child, like reading together, baking cookies, or going for a walk. These small moments can foster deeper emotional connections. For Teens: Respect your teen's need for personal space, but also make it clear that you're available if they want to talk. Engaging in a shared activity—whether it's watching a movie, playing a game, or even cooking dinner together—can create natural opportunities for conversation. 5. Create Opportunities for Gratitude The holiday season offers a natural time to reflect on what we are thankful for, and practicing gratitude can improve mood and emotional well-being. Encouraging kids and teens to focus on the positive aspects of their lives, even in the midst of stress, can shift their mindset and help manage holiday-related anxiety. For Younger Kids: Start a family gratitude tradition, such as keeping a gratitude jar or writing thank-you notes. Help them identify small things they’re grateful for each day. For Teens: If your teen enjoys writing, encourage them to start a gratitude journal where they can record things they appreciate. If they’re less inclined to write, help them brainstorm ways to show gratitude through actions, like volunteering or helping someone in need. 6. Encourage Self-Care and Downtime Holiday breaks can feel endless, especially for children who are used to being busy. Encourage your child to take time for self-care activities, which might include reading, drawing, playing video games, or spending time outdoors. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you would like to meet in person to discuss any challenges or concerns you have for your child/ren. For students and families in our K-12 community, these transitions can bring about a mix of emotions—from excitement about the new school year to the potential for increased anxiety or sadness as the weather shifts. Encouraging open conversations about mental health within families is crucial. Here are a few tips for fostering dialogue: Check-in Regularly: Ask your child about their feelings and experiences at school. Make it a routine to talk about their day, focusing not just on academics but also on their emotions. Normalize Mental Health Discussions: Share your own feelings and experiences, showing that it’s okay to talk about mental health struggles. This can help reduce stigma and encourage children to express their own feelings. Educate Together: Take time to learn about mental health resources available in the community. This could include school counselors, local therapists, or online resources. As the seasons change, families can adopt various strategies to support mental wellness : Stay Active: Encourage outdoor activities. Nature walks, sports, or even a family bike ride can boost mood and alleviate stress. Maintain a Routine: Establishing a consistent daily routine can provide a sense of stability and predictability, which is especially important during transitions. Practice Mindfulness: Introduce mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga. These can help manage stress and improve emotional regulation. Prioritize Sleep: As daylight hours decrease, ensure that everyone in the family is getting adequate rest. Sleep plays a vital role in mental health. Our school is committed to supporting the mental health of our students and families, please do not hesitate to reach out for services or referrals. I am happy to provide any support I am able. As we transition into a new season, let’s prioritize mental health as a vital part of our school community. By supporting one another and embracing open conversations, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and understood. Together, we can navigate the ups and downs of the seasons with resilience and strength. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you would like to meet in person to discuss any challenges or concerns you have for your child/ren. EDP’s track a student’s progress toward graduation as well as their long-term career plans. As you can imagine, these change a lot based on the student’s interest! We fill them out once a year and they do need to be signed by parents. Please sign these and return them as soon as possible. Explore NWTC Day - This event is geared towards Juniors and Seniors who have an interest in attending NWTC or maybe just are not quite sure what they want to do after graduation. We will be showcasing all programs that the NWTC Marinette Campus has to offer. The plan is to have each student pick 2 areas of study they are interested in (whether that is specific programs or areas of study). They will get to spend time in each area hearing from students, faculty and doing some hands-on activities. If students would like to sign-up, they can contact Ms. Bourgeois.
