Whether they're entering a new grade, facing a new school, or simply adjusting to a change in routine, anxiety can impact their performance and overall well-being. As a school-based therapist, I've compiled some practical tips for parents to help support their anxious students. Open Communication: Encourage your child to share their feelings. Make time for regular check-ins and listen without judgment. Let them know it's okay to express their worries. Establish Routines: Consistent routines can provide a sense of stability. Help your child create a daily schedule that includes time for schoolwork, relaxation, and hobbies. Teach Coping Strategies: Equip your child with techniques to manage anxiety, such as deep breathing exercises or mindfulness practices. These can be particularly useful during stressful situations. Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate small victories and efforts. Positive reinforcement can boost your child's confidence and help them feel more secure. Seek Professional Support: If anxiety persists or becomes overwhelming, consider seeking guidance from a mental health professional. Early intervention can make a significant difference. For more resources on supporting anxious students, check out these helpful links: The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Helping Children Cope with Anxiety Child Mind Institute: How to Help Kids with Back-to-School Anxiety American Psychological Association: Tips for Reducing Back-to-School Anxiety Please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you would like to meet in person to discuss any challenges or concerns you have for your child/ren. The colder months can sometimes bring about unique challenges, and fostering a supportive environment is key to helping our kids navigate this season with resilience and joy. 1. Embrace the Outdoors: Encourage outdoor activities even when it's cold. Fresh air and sunlight are natural mood boosters. Whether it's a winter walk, building a snowman, or a simple game of catch, these activities can be both fun and beneficial for mental health. 2. Keep the Routine: Maintaining a consistent routine provides a sense of stability. Regular meal times, bedtime rituals, and designated study hours contribute to a structured environment that can alleviate stress. 3. Stay Connected: The winter months can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation. Foster connections with friends and family through virtual gatherings or cozy get-togethers. Social interactions, even if online, play a crucial role in supporting mental health. 4. Be Mindful of Screen Time: While technology is a valuable tool, excessive screen time can impact mental health. Encourage a balance between online and offline activities, and consider introducing activities that don't involve screens. 5. Healthy Eating Habits: A well-balanced diet is fundamental to both physical and mental health. Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your child's meals to provide essential nutrients that support brain function. 6. Open Communication: Create a safe space for your child to express their feelings. Open communication fosters trust and allows you to address any concerns they might have. Remember, it's okay not to be okay, and seeking help is a sign of strength. 7. Lead by Example: Demonstrate healthy habits in your own life. Children often learn by observing their parents, so modeling positive behaviors can have a lasting impact on their mental well-being. As we navigate the winter season together, let's prioritize our children's mental health. By fostering a supportive and loving environment, we can help them build resilience and face the colder months with a positive mindset. There is no longer the option to enter the information yourself. 4) Since the info is directly from IRS the financial aid offices need to follow IRS tax code and students are the only people that financial aid offices can talk to. They cannot talk to parents or high schools even if a FERPA release form is filled out. Student must be present and provide written consent during the interaction. This is a significant change from previous years. SAPS with representatives from Bay College will host a FASFA workshop on January 31 from 3-5pm to assist families in filling out their FASFA.
