District Update Regarding March 31 and Community Events
Dear SMCSD Community, You may be aware that recent national media reports have raised serious allegations of inappropriate conduct involving United Farm Workers co-founder Cesar Chavez. As a result of this reporting, the U.F.W. Foundation has cancelled its annual celebrations honoring Mr. Chavez, describing the news as “profoundly shocking.” We want to acknowledge this news and remind our community of the protections we have in place for our students, as safety remains our top priority. All staff are mandated reporters and participate in annual training. If a staff member suspects, or a student shares concerns about harm or inappropriate behavior, whether physical, emotional, or otherwise, we are required to take it seriously and report it to the appropriate authorities. Law enforcement professionals are trained to respond to and support children in these situations. March 31 will remain a regular school day on our District calendar for this year. We will wait for any direction from the State of California regarding the continued observation of a Cesar Chavez holiday. The March 31 event has been renamed “Latin Heritage Community Celebration” to ensure the event title is culturally responsive, inclusive, and reflective of the broader Latin heritage and community traditions being recognized. In addition to our school counselors, who are available to support students, we are also sharing the following resource for families: National Sexual Assault Hotline, operated by RAINN Offers free, confidential, 24/7/365 support in English and Spanish Call 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or text “HOPE” to 64673 Online chat and resources available at https://rainn.org/ Thank you for your attention.

SMCSD Community Newsletter- March 13th
Message from the Superintendent Hello SMCSD Families, Community, and Students, It has been a joyful and inspiring few weeks across our schools, and I always appreciate the opportunity to share highlights from the incredible work happening every day in the Sausalito Marin City School District. One of the highlights of my recent classroom visits was spending time in Mr. Nathan Scripps’ 7th grade classroom, where students proudly presented their science projects. The level of engagement, collaboration, and critical thinking was impressive. Students used rubrics, presentations, and hands-on learning to explain their research and findings with confidence. Watching our 7th graders present their work and support one another was a powerful reminder of how capable and talented our students are. Way to go, 7th grade! March also brings an important opportunity to celebrate Women’s History Month, and our students and staff have embraced it in thoughtful and creative ways. A special thank you to Ms. Bowie and Ms. Flora for leading a wonderful display that highlights inspiring women in our own school community. It is a beautiful reminder that the role models shaping our students’ lives are not only found in history books, but right here in our classrooms and hallways every day. Across the district, we continue to focus on strengthening teaching and learning while supporting the whole child. Our teams recently participated in a TK classroom walkthrough with SELPA, MCOE, and Supporting Innovative Practices to strengthen inclusive learning environments for our youngest learners. Thank you to Ms. Perez, Ms. Hope, and our Student Success Coaches Lawana and Flora for their dedication to supporting early learners. At the same time, our educators continue important work around ELA curriculum adoption and professional learning to ensure students have access to high-quality instruction every day. We are also continuing important work to improve and invest in our facilities and community spaces. Our campus reconstruction projects are progressing, and we are looking ahead to exciting improvements such as the Nevada Campus work and future sustainability efforts. In addition, our district will have a Bond Measure on the June ballot to support the construction of Phillips Field. If approved, we will invite community members to join a stakeholder committee to help guide future field use policies, ensuring this space reflects the needs of our students and community. Finally, we have many wonderful events coming up across the district that provide opportunities to connect, celebrate our students, and strengthen our community. Thank you to our students, families, teachers, and staff for the care, commitment, and pride you bring to our schools every day. I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming events and continuing to celebrate the incredible work happening across SMCSD. Superintendent Huffman Community Spotlight Celebrating, Mrs. Ruby Wilson Former Teacher and Principal at MLK Bayside Influential to Ms. Bowie and so in Marin City Retired in 2006 after 34 of years Quote from, CSEA President and Student Success Coach, Shakona Bowie: “Mrs. Wilson was a very special person in my life. First, she was my kindergarten teacher, and as I grew older, I would often return to her class to assist her. When I turned 19, I returned to Bayside Elementary School to become a yard supervisor, and there she was, still teaching kindergarten with the same love and dedication I remembered. Now, as an adult, I reflect on her influence. She encouraged me to take the test to become a Teacher Assistant, which I passed, and I became her assistant. Mrs. Wilson treated me like family - her “baby girl,” she often called me. I admired her stern yet loving approach. She was gentle, caring, and always available. She had a passion for reading and teaching. We would spend hours discussing history and other topics before and after school. I often speak about her in class, quoting her wisdom” Florence Williams Florence is a graduate of Wiley College in Texas and UC Berkeley, where she earned her teaching credentials, and later received her Master’s in Community Development and Public Service from the University of San Francisco. She served as a teacher in the San Francisco Unified School District for 33 years, dedicating her career to uplifting students and families. She is also a former Marin City Community Services District Board Member and co-founder of Bridge the Gap College Prep. As Board President of the Marin City Community Development Corporation, she helped the housing community achieve 100% affordable housing. She considers teaching a true calling and firmly believes in every student’s ability to learn. As she often says, “I ain't tired yet. I will keep pushing to make a difference, for I have been blessed.” Everett Brandon Everett Brandon was the co-founder of PACT Inc., a community-based organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth in their pursuit of education and economic stability. As the first Black stockbroker in San Francisco, he founded PACT in 1963 in response to student achievement gaps and the urgent need for Black economic stability during the Civil Rights Movement. Since its founding, PACT has served more than 60,000 students, helping place 36,000 of them into college and other post-secondary pathways through scholarships and sustained support. In 2024, PACT was recognized through the San Francisco Legacy Business Program, a designation honoring organizations that have operated for more than 30 years and made a lasting contribution to the city’s history and identity. MLK Community Newsletter
MLK Community Newsletter A few words from Principal Hale Dear MLK Community, First, I want to wish everyone a joyful and restful Winter Break! My hope is that our students enjoy meaningful time with family and loved ones. It has been a week with many illnesses at MLK, so this break comes at just the right time for everyone to rest and recover. I’d like to give a special shout-out to our third grade students for their incredible performances at our Lunar New Year Assembly. It takes real courage to step onto a stage and perform in front of peers. Third graders, please know how proud we are of you! A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Quynh, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Mere, and Ms. Miller for guiding and preparing our students for these special performances. Your care and dedication make these moments possible. In the spirit of Black History Month, please enjoy the story below about local residents gifting our school a print of an original photo of Dr. King for our office. It is a meaningful addition to our space and a reminder of the legacy we carry forward each day. You’ll also see photos from our inspiring MLK Oratorical Contest. The event was a tremendous success. From all reports, hearing our students speak about the life and legacy of Dr. King, and reflect on their responsibility to live out his message, was truly powerful. We look forward to making this a cherished MLK tradition. We are proud to announce our "Keeping the Dream Alive" Oratorical winners. 54 students, grades 3rd-8th, wrote and submitted original works for our Superintendent's panel and 13 were selected as winners. The winners are: Maleek C. (3rd), Alexandria T. (4th), Juan L. (4th), Bradley P. (5th), Prince A. (6th), Jahliyah R. (6th), Laurence T. (6th), Lucia S. (7th), Gabriela C. (7th), Bennet B. (7th), Zaviah S. (7th), Norah B. (8th and Levian L. (8th). We appreciate all of our participants and give special congratulations to our winners! We will celebrate the end of Black History Month and honor our speech winners on February 24th at 5:30 at our Phillips Campus. Join us for the presentations, music, soul food, and student giveaways. Warmly, Principal Hale Lunar New Year Special Performances Our first Annual Oratorical Contest Sweet Story about Art & Community It all started when writer and educator Stephenie Hollyman walked into our office. She was substituting for one of our teachers and casually asked me, “Do you have any photography of MLK for your office?” She then shared something extraordinary: her father was Thomas Hollyman, an internationally renowned photojournalist whose career spanned decades and continents. Hollyman was known for capturing powerful human moments with dignity and depth. Throughout his career, he documented cultural icons, global movements, and everyday life with remarkable artistry and authenticity. Among his subjects was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Stephenie offered to gift our school several original prints from her father’s collection: What an incredible act of generosity. The story didn’t end there. Bob Woodrum of Sausalito Picture Framing graciously offered to professionally frame the photographs at no cost to the school. He shared that his own children attended MLK and that he holds deep gratitude for our school community, and for Becky Jackson in particular. Because of these generous community members, our new artwork now hangs proudly in our hallway. These photographs are more than art; they are a daily reminder of Dr. King’s legacy and of the extraordinary people who love our school and believe in its mission. They reflect not only history, but community, gratitude, and the living legacy of Dr. King’s work right here at MLK. Attendance: Every Day Counts! Attendance Still Matters! As we near the break please be reminded that student attendance is essential for student achievement. With that said, school resumes Monday, February 23rd and we look to receive all of our students on that day. Have a restful vacation and see you soon!
