  • Week 18 Talk Sup Review and Preview

Talk Sup Week 18 January 12, 2026 Good morning Sayreville! I hope you had a relaxing weekend. Welcome to another edition of my Talk Sup(erintendent) Review and Preview  newsletter. P lease remember that students will be dismissed early today  so that our staff can participate in professional development.   As you may or may not have heard, last Friday, a Sayreville student was arrested for fatally shooting a former student of ours who moved to East Brunswick several years ago. As we all struggle to accept the reality of what occurred, we send our thoughts and prayers to the family of the victim, the East Brunswick School District community, and all those involved in or affected by this horrific and senseless act of violence. This morning, our school counselors and therapists will be on standby to provide trauma and grief counseling to any students and staff members in need of such. Furthermore, since the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is and has always been our highest priority, our administration will be working collaboratively with local and county law enforcement to investigate the incident and hold all involved accountable, and to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff. District News Attention parents and staff!  Please remind our students that  In Middlesex County, NJ, and in general,  no ice is 100% safe , especially on ponds with moving water or stormwater management areas . Therefore, please direct them to stay off all frozen lakes, ponds, retention areas and streams and to  call  emergency services (911) immediately if if they witness someone fall through ice, rather than attempting a risky rescue themself.   Likewise, as I noted back in December, while we hope that we will not have to exercise any hazardous weather-related school closures or schedule changes (delayed opening or early dismissal) this year, as we were reminded this weekend, we are now in the middle of winter. Therefore, below please find some tips to prepare you just in case. Have contingency plans in place for childcare if schools are closed for the day or on a delayed opening or early dismissal schedule. Have a secondary plan in place in case roads between your home and the school or your workplace are closed. Ensure that you have emergency contact information for family members, friends, or neighbors who might need to assist you in case of an emergency. Likewise, below please find some very important winter bus safety tips for our students and their parents. Arrive early at the bus stop and dress appropriately for the weather (heavy jackets, hats, mittens, gloves or boots). Students should wait for the bus several feet further back off the road in a safe place, as the roads can be slippery. Use the handrail when boarding and exiting the bus to prevent slips and falls on icy steps. Before crossing in front of the bus, wait for an “all clear” from the driver. Cross 10 feet in front of the bus so the driver can see you as you cross. During hazardous weather events, we will do everything we can to give parents and staff as much advanced notice as possible about any school schedule changes using our website ( http://www.sayrevillek12.net )  and the ParentSquare automated calling, texting, and e-mail system. However, we also recommend that you check our Facebook   page , Twitter account, and  Instagram  account , as well as News 12 New Jersey and NJ 101.5.  If you did not have a chance to attend or view  the Board of Education (BOE) Reorganization and Business Meeting held on Tuesday, January 6th, here is what you missed. Likewise, each reelected BOE members took the time to thank the community members who supported their candidacy. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 20th .   During this meeting, the Board will begin publicly reviewing and discussing the 2026-27 School District Budget with the following budget presentations: Individual Schools and Curriculum and Instruction. The agenda for this meeting will be posted on the district website on January 16th. A complete copy of the January 6th Reorganization and Business Meeting minutes will be posted on the BOE Meeting Minutes page of the website once they are approved by the BOE during the next BOE Meeting on January 20, 2026. In the Schools Thanks to our magnificent instructional staff, our students had a very productive and fun week of learning last Friday and prior to the winter recess.        At the high school, Class of 2025 graduates Quinn Guerra, Lily Heidelberg, and Sarah Smith visited with students in the media center to speak about multiple topics including: their last semester in high school, networking, and the freshman experience. Representing Northeastern and Fordham Universities, the three alumni gave personal anecdotes and helpful tips on how to navigate live away from home and how to build a new life on campus. In addition,  staff and students enjoyed  themselves and appreciated the opportunity to take a break, engage with one another, and be mindful in the moment while participating in Winter Wellness Week activities, especially the "Canines & Cocoa" event.            SMS           At the middle school, Mrs. Iurilli's and Mrs. Redmond’s classes designed their “gift to the world." What would you give to the world? The students chose to gift: free healthcare, housing to all, equal education, peace, true happiness, clean communities, and the feeling of safety to name a few . At the upper elementary school, students from Team 5-2 took on the challenge to build the tallest candy cane tower with mini candy canes and Play-doh. They had to overcome gravity and balance it just right so it wouldn't topple over. Eisenhower At the Eisenhower School, students in Ms. Esteban and Mr. DeCollibus's 1st Grade class connected their How to Writing Unit with the cold weather by participating in an interactive "how to make hot cocoa writing" activity while making actual hot cocoa to help them formulate their writing in a hands-on way .           Truman           At the Truman School, holiday magic filled the halls during their Holiday Sing-a-Long. Students were surprised by special visitors like the Disney Princesses, Olaf, the Grinch, Elves, Santa, and Mrs. Claus.
