  • Week 15 Talk Sup Review and Preview

Talk Sup Week 15 December 15, 2025 Good morning Sayreville! I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. Welcome to another edition of my Talk Sup(erintendent) Review and Preview  newsletter. Please remember that students and staff will be dismissed early next Tuesd ay, December 23rd so that they can get a head start on the holiday and winter recess. Furthermore, please remember that our schools will be   closed   from  Tuesday, December 24th through Thursday, January 1st for the holiday and winter recess.   District News Last week, the district proudly identified the 2025-26 Governor’s Educator Teachers of the Year (GETOY), and Governor’s Education Services Professionals of the Year (GESPOY) at each school in the district. Thus, the SEA joined the building  administrators in recognizing and celebrating the below recipients. We congratulate and commend each one, as well as all the incredibly talented educators in our district, who work tirelessly to promote the success of all our students. While we secretly wish that we will not have to exercise any hazardous weather-related school closures or schedule changes  (delayed opening or early dismissal) this year, as we were reminded yesterday, we are now in winter. Therefore, below please find some tips to prepare you just in case. Have contingency plans in place for childcare if schools are closed for the day or on a delayed opening or early dismissal schedule. Have a secondary plan in place in case roads between your home and the school or your workplace are closed. Ensure that you have emergency contact information for family members, friends, or neighbors who might need to assist you in case of an emergency. Likewise, below please find some very important winter bus safety tips for our students and their parents. Arrive early at the bus stop and dress appropriately for the weather (heavy jackets, hats, mittens, gloves or boots). Students should wait for the bus several feet further back off the road in a safe place, as the roads can be slippery. Use the handrail when boarding and exiting the bus to prevent slips and falls on icy steps. Before crossing in front of the bus, wait for an “all clear” from the driver. Cross 10 feet in front of the bus so the driver can see you as you cross. During hazardous weather events, we will do everything we can to give parents and staff as much advanced notice as possible about any school schedule changes using our website ( http://www.sayrevillek12.net )  and the ParentSquare automated calling, texting, and e-mail system. However, we also recommend that you check our Facebook   page , Twitter account, and  Instagram  account , as well as News 12 New Jersey and NJ 101.5.  Tomorrow evening at 7:30 pm , there will be a Board of Education (BOE) Business Meeting in the Board Room at the Samsel Upper Elementary School . To see the agenda for the meeting, click here . To access the live streaming of the meeting click here . Since the viewing of the live stream will be handled by YouTube, you must be viewing the stream on a browser or application that is live stream compatible. If you are unable to hear audio you may need to try a different browser/application. The live stream will only be available during the real-time duration of the meeting. Directions for public participation during the meeting will be provided on the above-mentioned live stream page of the website. Finally, if on Wednesday you wish to view it or other past-recorded BOE meetings, click here . In the Schools Thanks to our magnificent instructional staff, our students had a very productive and fun week of learning last week.        At the high school, the Air Force JROTC Awareness Presentation Team visited the middle school to deliver presentations on bullying awareness. All 25 cadets were divided into five groups and assigned to different classes throughout the day. Each group presented on the five forms of bullying, which included physical, verbal, relational, prejudicial, and cyber bullying. The middle schoolers were engaged and asked many questions throughout. In addition to promoting the AFJROTC program, the cadets shared their personal experiences on transitioning from middle school to high school. Several 7th and 8th graders expressed interest in joining the program one day . In addition, SWMHS graduate and 2024 SWMHS Hall of Fame Inductee Dave Sabo, visited the music recording studio to work with students on perfecting their guitar playing skills. If you are unfamiliar with Dave, he is a critically acclaimed and world famous guitarist and songwriter for the rock band Skid Row. He is also the manager of the band Down. Dave Sabo's friendship with Jon Bon Jovi led to him becoming the original lead guitarist for Bon Jovi in 1983. Lastly, students in Ms. Mojzsis’s Intro to Art classes completed a drawing assignment in which each student chose an image of candy to draw using colored pencil. lollipops, gummy bears, jelly beans, etc. were rendered with fantastic results.             SMS           At the middle school, students visited the PTO Book Fair to select a book to cozy up with during these cold winter evenings.   At the upper elementary school, thanks to the PTO, students had a blast participating in the Mind Storm  Game Show Assembly. In addition, 5th grade students participated in a virtual Climate Change presentation delivered by the Liberty Science Center. This activity was funded through the Climate Change Education and Resilience Through Interdisciplinary Learning (CCERIL) Grant. Students were presented with topics such as: clean energy, carbon dioxide emissions reduction, and Earth's changing climate. The presenter utilized maps, visuals, graphs, and effective discussion techniques to engage students as classroom teachers facilitated student responses through the chat feature. Additionally, the presenter related Earth's climate to those of Mercury and Venus. The students enjoyed the presentation and learned valuable information on the importance of protecting our planet.  Furthermore, the  Heroes and Cool Kids  program at the high school visited and met with 5th grade students to speak with them about being resilient in the face of adversity. Finally, students in Mrs. Tier's Language Arts classes took advantage of an enrichment project where they wrote their own hybrid books.   Arleth At the Arleth School, the third-grade students participated in a special assembly focused on time capsules. Mr. Michael Clark, an Arleth alumnus, returned to the school to unearth a time capsule he had buried 25 years ago with his Boys Scouts troop. Students watched a live stream of the capsule being dug up and removed, witnessed the opening of the capsule, and then rotated through stations where they observed and discussed its contents. In addition, Mr. Clark presented a slideshow that taught students about time capsules and explained the process of burying the capsule years ago. Following the assembly, students returned to their classrooms to complete an activity provided by Mr. Clark, as well as a writing assignment in which they described what they would choose to bury in a time capsule of their own. It was an exciting and memorable experience for the students and a wonderful opportunity to welcome back an Arleth alumnus . Eisenhower At the Eisenhower School, student in the 3rd Grade Chorus, led by Ms. Gugliotta, Music Teacher, performed magnificently during their holiday concert.. In addition, staff and students celebrated this week's Exceptional Eagles. Lastly, a special guest visited, but he wasn't such a mean one.                       In Project Before at the Cheesequake School, Ms. Magistro w elcomed students to December. Through her playful storytelling and big-hearted characters, every book she reads to them becomes an adventure . In addition, Luis Gallego from Tools of the Mind , visited the dual language class to observe and provide guidance and support to our amazing teacher and paraprofessional. If you were not aware, the class is taught in both Spanish and English to our students in this very unique and incredible class.  Bombers Beyond           In the Bombers Beyond 18-21-Year-Old Program, the Brew Crew presented their special friend and patron, Bonnie, with a handmade blanket that they sewed with the help of another special friend and patron, Wendy. The blanket will be donated to the JFK University Medical Center in Edison where it will be given to a child to comfort them while they are staying at the hospital.  Outstanding Outcomes This past week, our students, staff, alumni, and community members continued to impress us with their remarkable accomplishments. We commend and congratulate Mr. Timothy Byrne, the Principal of the Wilson School, who was recently selected as the 2026 Garden State Film Festival's Educator of the Year. The Educator of the Year Award acknowledges educators who go above and beyond in inspiring the next generation of storytellers, filmmakers, and creative thinkers. Therefore, this prestigious honor recognizes Mr. Byrne's outstanding dedication to education and his commitment to fostering creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression among his students. His innovative approach to integrating film and media arts into the educational experience has made a lasting impact on the lives of young learners. In fact, his use of film as a universal language to bring together students who speak different languages demonstrates the true power of visual storytelling to transcend barriers and create community. We also congratulate and commend 2021 SWMHS Graduate Nicholas Diaz, whose senior ceramic art show is currently on exhibit at Kean University in the student gallery until December 19th. We are extremely proud of his creativity, dedication to the ceramic arts, and all his hard work and determination in learning as much as he possible can in the ceramic world. Bomber Nation salutes all our students, staff, and community members for representing Sayreville in such an impeccable manner. They Rock! Athletics   In athletics, the SWMHS Boys Swim Team improved their season record to 3-0 after defeating J.P Stevens and Piscataway High Schools last week . Likewis e, on the mat, the SWMHS Wrestling Team defeated Spotswood and Red Bank Regional High Schools to improve their season record to 2-0. On the hard court, the SWMHS Boys Basketball Team beat Opratory High School to start their season with a victory. We also commend and congratulate SMS students Patrick Walsh and Ryan Ruiter, who play for the New Jersey American Youth Football Team that placed third in the national championship. Finally, we congratulate Woodrow Wilson first grader, Aleksi Elias for winning six medals and for being crowned the All-Around Champion during the recent Spartan Boys Invitational Gymnastics Championship. Win or lose, all our amazing student athletes continued to compete fiercely and demonstrate the teamwork and sportsmanship that makes us all proud to be Bombers. Thus, we thank them and their coaches for their hard work, dedication, and the way they represent SWMHS and our community. Please remember that you can see all athletic team schedules by visiting the Athletics page of our website or by clicking here . • Week 14 Talk Sup Review and Preview

Talk Sup Week 14 December 8, 2025 Good morning Sayreville! I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. Welcome to another edition of my Talk Sup(erintendent) Review and Preview  newsletter. Please remember that students will be dismissed early today  so that our staff can participate in professional development .   District News Last week, Sayreville War Memorial High School hosted its annual Tech Night, sponsored by the Perkins Grant. Families from around the district came to see the different technologies that are offered in the district. Volunteers from the high school, middle school, and Samuel Upper Elementary School demonstrated the technology they use in their clubs and classes. The evening started off with a keynote speaker, as Lois Alston, EdTech Specialist from Long Branch Schools, spoke to the students about the 4 C's: Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Communication, and their importance in our learning. The night continued with 13 stations for students to visit. Students from the high school Computer Science Club demonstrated LED Programming, Girls IT used Microbits, the Technology Student Association shared the  possible career opportunities available in the Computer Science field, the Robotics class demonstrated use of their robots and drones, and the Computer Science Honor Society modeled the apps they created in class. The middle school Career Club presented information on careers in technology; the 7th-grade students demonstrated the languages of the internet, and the 8th-grade students showed how to decode messages. The 5th-grade students from Samsel had a green screen, and the 4th-grade students brought their robots. There was also a representative from the Sayreville Technology Department highlighting Women in Tech, a Rutgers University student sharing information about their Engineering Club, and the keynote speaker, Lois Alston, demonstrating the use of Adobe Express. In Sayreville University, middle school teachers were inspired by Jessica Jenkins from Jana Lee Consulting to perform the hard work of Building Inclusive Practices in their classroom. In the Schools Thanks to our magnificent instructional staff, our students had a very productive and fun week of learning last week. Our staff, students, and their families across the school community, particularly at Wilson and Arleth, had a great time kicking off the holiday season at the Sayreville Parade of Lights.       At the high school, students in the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science classes went on a field trip to tour the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), which was sponsored by the Perkins Grant. During the event, they met up with two alumni, Rishi Shah (Class of 2025) and Kanika Madhok (Class of 2024), who attend college at NJIT and Rutgers Newark  respectively. In addition, students in Ms. DiPaolo's Human Anatomy and Physiology class dissected sheep hearts.           SMS           At the middle school, students in Ms. Bobik's class stacked and released cups to test Newton's first law of motion, also known as the law of inertia, which states that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction, unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force . In simple  terms, an object will not change its state of motion unless a force compels it to. Also, students visited the media center to purchase a book and to get into  the holiday spirit during the Holiday Book Fair. At the upper elementary school, led by Ms. Gallagher, students participated in one of their favorite traditions each year, which is to create and send holiday cards to deployed armed service members. This year, the students outdid themselves by creating over 600 cards to send overseas. Arleth At the Arleth School,  s tudents participated in “Principal for a Day” activities, where two students from each grade level had the chance to shadow Mr. Preston and learn about the daily responsibilities of running a school. They visited  classrooms, toured the building, and enjoyed a special pizza lunch. As part of their experience, the students also shared thoughtful ideas about how to make Arleth an even better place. Ideas ranged from being kinder to one another, to keeping the school clean, to helping classmates who need a friend. Their insights and leadership were truly inspiring . In addition, the Arleth PTO hosted Pizza Bingo, a wonderful family event that brought out more than 80 participants. Families played bingo, enjoyed pizza, and reconnected with friends. The night was another great example of the strong Arleth community spirit. . Eisenhower At the Eisenhower School, staff and students celebrated the Exceptional Eagles.           Truman           At the Truman School, students participated in Pajama Day to support the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Thanks to the generous donations made by staff and families, they will make a profound impact on so many children being treated at CHOPS during the holidays. Additionally,  Ms. Romano, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Avdiu and Ms. Lyla decked their hall with a little "Winter Wonderland Magic." Similarly, several other Truman teachers welcomed December by creating a "Gingerbread House Walkway" for students to enjoy. Staff, students and their families had a blast during the annual Tree Lighting ceremony. Lastly, the 3rd Grade Chorus, led by Ms. Rice, performed magnificently during concerts for the senior citizens at the Venetian Care Center and the Retired Educators Association meeting at the Grand Marquis in Old Bridge.  Outstanding Outcomes This past week, our students, staff, alumni, and community members continued to impress us with their remarkable accomplishments.  Compliments of the "Where Are They Now" Committee at the high school, we commend SWMHS Class of 2021 Graduate Nicholas Diaz. In his first years of college at Middlesex County College (MCC), Nicholas excelled in the arts, immersing himself in all of the art classes MCC has to offer, particularly ceramic arts. Not only is he mastering his craft, but he is also helping fellow classmates in the art room as well, similar to the role of a teacher’s assistant. Currently, he is finishing his BFA in Studio Art and has been accepted into the graduate program at Kean University for his Master’s degree in Art.  His final student ceramic showcase, titled “Imperfection to Perfection”, at the Student Gallery at Kean University will occur this month. Outside of school, Nick works at the Montclair Art Museum, teaching ceramics, and at Have A Nice Clay in Westfield, NJ. His goal is to become a high school ceramics teacher. Likewise, we commend Class of 2017 Graduate Brianna Barbosa. Brianna went on to Seton Hall University as part of their 3+3 Physical Therapy Program. She completed clinical rotations in outpatient orthopedics, subacute rehabilitation, and a specialized pediatric school setting. In 2023, she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy and went on to pass the National Board Exam, then starting her career at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, an intensive inpatient rehab hospital where she currently works as a Senior Physical Therapist. She has experienced a variety of diagnoses, including neurologic conditions, cardiac and medically complex cases, post-operative patients, individuals with amputations, and more. Her passion, though, is working with the stroke population - helping her patients regain movement, rebuild confidence, and return to the highest level of independence possible. She loves her work and is grateful to make a meaningful difference in the lives of her patients. Bomber Nation salutes all our students, staff, and community members for representing Sayreville in such an impeccable manner. They Rock! Performing Arts  In performing arts, students at Samsel demonstrated their incredible artistic talent. In fact, check out this amazing picture of the school illustrated by one of them. Athletics   In athletics, the SWMHS Boys Bowling Team won their first match of the season over J.P. Stevens High School. Likewise, the Girls Bowling Team defeated Middlesex High School to earn their first victory of the season. Finally, the SWMHS Boys Swim Team beat Old Bridge High School to claim their first match win of the season. Win  or lose, all our amazing student athletes continued to compete fiercely and demonstrate the teamwork and sportsmanship that makes us all proud to be Bombers. Thus, we thank them and their coaches for their hard work, dedication, and the way they represent SWMHS and our community.
