Naturally, our schools are closed today in observance of Presidents Day District News On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the district hosted a Safer Internet Family Night Celebration for families in grades PreK-12. The evening began with an engaging keynote titled; "Empowering Families for a Safer Digitial Future," which was presented by Dr. Michael Waranowicz, Director of Technology. If you would like to view the presentation, it is on the district website under the Technology Department, or you can click here . Parents and students then had the opportunity to visit interactive learning stations facilitated by district Media Specialists and the Technology Integration Specialists. Specifically, they shared several age appropriate Connect Safely technology resources walking families through the Connect Safely website and provided parent guides and handouts for families to continue conversations about internet safety at home. In addition, district team members engaged parents and students in activities focused on the following topics: Go Guardian , Wellness, Identity and Self Respect, Media Literacy and Critical Thinking, Media Safety, and Civility. We thank Connect Safely ( https://connectsafely.org ) for this grant award and for sponsoring the event. In the Schools Thanks to our magnificent instructional staff, our students had a very productive and fun week of learning last week. At the high school, students in the TIGS Club had a blast during their special February Valentine’s Day Meeting. In addition, Grammy nominated marimba and percussion artist Greg Giannascoli visited instrumental music classes to perform a selection of percussion music by a composer named Clair Omar Musser and made many suggestions for students to improve their technique. If you are unfamiliar with Greg, he was a winner of the 2001 Artist International New York Recital / Young Artist Competition, and was also top prize winner of the 1997 Patrons of Wisdom International Young Artist Competition. Greg tours regularly, performing on many Community Concert Series programs throughout the US as a soloist with orchestras, and in recitals throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Greg has performed recitals in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Theatro Juarez in Mexico, and the Glenn Gould Studio in Canada. Greg performs exclusively on the Yamaha 6000 and 4600 marimbas and 2700 studio vibraphone. He also uses Malletech mallets and Sabian cymbals. Greg performed with Orchestra 2001 on the Grammy-nominated recording of George Crumb’s American Song Book VII: Songs of the Heartland. The students in Ms. Gassman's Chemistry Honors class performed flame tests to see how different chemicals produce different colors when exposed to a flame. They also worked together to find substances that would follow a Valentine's Day theme. Likewise, students in Mr. Fisher's Honors Chemistry class, participated in a similar lab where they made a rainbow. In Ms. DiPaolo's Human Anatomy Honors class, for the first time, the students dissected sheep lungs as well as hearts. They were surprised to find that lungs are not a lot of empty space, but rather a finely porous organ. They were also impressed with the muscles of the trachea. In Mr. Gliddon's Wood Shop classes, students worked on a cart to help the high school Brew Crew deliver coffee and other hot beverages to the staff during the school day. They are also working on serving trays for Bombers Beyond Café. Additionally, members of the Peer Leadership Club had a great time making and sharing Valentine’s Day crafts. Finally, Mr. Quinby joined Afterburn, the staff band, during their weekly Friday culture and climate boost. SMS At the middle school, "Swoop Too," a special guest from Philadelphia triumphantly flew into the media center to take out and and read a book about football. In addition, students in Mr. Longo's Science class had a delicious time eating crickets and learning about potential energy. Students in Mr. Tyska's class had an awesome time participating in the annual Tyskee Awards. At the upper elementary school, students took part in a Kindness assembly to kick off their Raise Craze Kindness Campaign. They hope to reach the goal of 5,000 random acts of kindness. In addition, students celebrated the 100th day of school by finding multiplication facts during morning meeting time and matching them to the product. Middle school 8th graders in the ”Sidekicks” club visited the 4th graders to talk with them about being kind and good sportsmanship. They were so grateful to them for taking the time to share their knowledge and experiences with them. Arleth At the Arleth School, students had a blast celebrating Random Acts of Kindness week with spirit days, announcements, and activities. The third grade kindness activity was to create coffee sleeves, which will be donated to the Bombers Cafe. The 100th day of school also occurred during the spirit week and many students and staff participated with their best 100th day attire and activities around the school, including scavenger hunts and creating one hundred words. Eisenhower At the Eisenhower School, students had a blast celebrating the 100th day of school, which included an awesome parade. Truman At the Truman School, students and staff had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school. Later during a wonderful assembly, they went on a “Kindness Quest” to fill the world with thoughtfulness and positivity. They learned that consideration is key, and that it’s totally cool to be kind. Furthermore, thanks to the amazing Truman PTO, students and their families had so much fun belting out tunes during Karaoke Night. Truman students have so much talent. Lastly, two very distinguished and honored guests visited the school to participate in the 1st grade parade and to congratulate Ms. Cozzi on her well-deserved retirement.. Wilson At the Wilson School, students and staff celebrated the 100th day of school with a fun and exciting activity—finding 100 pictures of Mr. Byrne. Students eagerly searched high and low throughout the school, working together to locate every hidden photo. Laughter and excitement filled the hallways as they got closer to their goal. In the end, they had a fantastic time and successfully found all 100 pictures, making it a memorable celebration of the special day. In Project Before, at the Cheesequake School, students had a great time cuddling up with friends, books, and flashlights during Hibernation Day. They also built forts and caves to prepare for a long winter’s nap. In addition, love and Friendship filled the air during Valentine’s Day. At the Selover School, Ms. Angie took her classes on a fun arctic animal scavenger hunt. In addition, students Ms. Heather’s and Ms. Melissa’s classes had a ball making snow volcanos after last Wednesday's snowstorm. Bombers Beyond In the Bombers Beyond 18-21-Year-Old program, the Brew Crew celebrated the 100th day of school. In addition, they welcomed the SMS Cheer Team for their Craft Night fundraiser in which all the proceeds they raised went to Sammy's Hope. Delayed Opening of Schools for Tomorrow, Wednesday, ...
Good evening. According to the latest hazardous weather reports for Sayreville, snow, sleet, and ice are in the forecast for this evening and tomorrow morning until about 6 am. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the Sayreville Public Schools will exercise a 90-minute delayed opening for tomorrow, Wednesday, February 12, 2025 . Please note that during a delayed opening, Leading Edge before care services are cancelled . Likewise, Literacy and Math Academies at all schools are cancelled . Below please find the times for each school and estimated bus arrival times, which are 90-minutes later than the regular times. Hence, please begin planning now for t omorrow’s delayed opening . Your preparations should include: Have contingency plans in place for childcare if schools are closed for the day or on a delayed opening or early dismissal schedule. Have a secondary plan in place in case roads between your home and the school or your workplace are closed. Ensure that you have emergency contact information for family members, friends, or neighbors who might need to assist you in case of an emergency. Likewise, below please find some very important winter busing safety tips for our students and their parents. Arrive early at the bus stop and dress appropriately for the weather (heavy jackets, hats, mittens, gloves or boots!) Students should wait for the bus several feet further back off the road in a safe place, as the roads can be slippery. Students and staff should use the handrails when boarding and exiting the bus to prevent slips and falls on icy steps. Before crossing in front of the bus, students must wait for an “all clear” from the driver and cross 10 feet in front of the bus so that the driver can see them as they cross. Have a warm and safe night, and please drive safely tomorrow. Dr. Labbe

Last week, the district officially opened registration for our free 2025-26 Full-Day Project Before Preschool and Kindergarten Programs . In the Schools Thanks to our magnificent instructional staff, our students had a very productive and fun week of learning last week. At the high school, students in Ms. Peckham’s class presented their final Native American region projects, where they learned about the various regions because each group selected a specific region to research further. In addition, students in the Future Business Leaders of America club collected over 400 toys that they will donate to children in need as part of their Statewide Community Service project called "Whiskers and Wishes." In honor of Black History Month, students from the Black Student Union created and posted a periodic table of influential black people in history. In the Counseling Department, the counselors and Ms. Sicola, Director of School Counseling Services, provided a workshop to help parents/guardians of juniors jump start their college and career planning. Key topics included the college application process, Naviance, letters of recommendation, standardized testing, financial aid, the new FAFSA requirement, post-high school options, important dates, and counseling support. The counselors provided the parents/guardians with the knowledge to effectively support their junior during this pivotal time. Here is the presentation and here is the recording. Both are posted on the High School Guidance Department website. Feel free to email me Ms. Sicola with any questions. Later in the week, the c ounselors visited the middle school social studies classes and provided the eighth-grade students with information about choosing electives for next year, as well as presenting a mini high school orientation, which included available courses, graduation requirements, high school policies and procedures, and more. Four JROTC students also joined the classes to provide course and program information. The window for adding electives in OnCourse is open now. The eighth-grade students need to input their first-choice electives with two alternates for each directly in OnCourse. The deadline for course inputs is February 28th. The presentation can be found here and on the High School Guidance Department website . Feel free to email me Mrs. Sicola with any questions. In addition, the school counselors conducted College and Career Planning presentations in all US History 2 classes for all juniors. The students were provided with a great deal of information for them to begin their college application, start writing their college essay, create a FSA ID for their FAFSA application, and more. The presentation can be found here. Included are the spring open houses, the Google Classroom Code for the counselor-led workshops, and links and timelines to assist the juniors with their college application process. Finally, the school counselors conducted Helpful Hints for High School Students in all of the semester two Freshman Foundations classes. Each semester, the counselors visit this elective class as part of the Freshman Foundations curriculum. In a few more weeks, the students will complete a Career Interest Inventory with the school counselors. SMS At the middle school, cadets from the high school Air Force JROTC visited with students in the Career Club to share with them their experiences in the AFJROTC and to encourage them to consider joining the program when they enter the high school. Students and staff also participated in the district-wide SOUP-er Bowl food drive. As you can see, they predicted the Eagles to win. In addition, as part of the New Jersey Department of Education Climate Change Grant that the district was awarded for the second consecutive year, 7th grade students and the SMS Environmental Club attended an assembly entitled “The Quest for Less." At the upper elementary school, students traveled through the hallways to see holidays around the world. They even had an opportunity to stamp their passports. In addition, I visited with 5th grader students to share with them the unique opportunity that they will have to apply to be a part of the “Let the Children Lead” Board of Education meeting, which will take place on Tuesday, April 1st. If you are not aware of this acclaimed program, the Let the Children Lead program is when the 5th grade students represent board of education members and administrators during a BOE meeting and actually vote on and approve real motions. Parents of 5th grade students can get an application from their teacher. Information and applications will also be sent out. Arleth At the Arleth School, Ms. Romano and Ms. Giacobbe led their SOUP-er Bowl food drive efforts. In the end, they collected over 500 cans of food for families in need. By the way, based upon their results, they think Chiefs will prevail over the Eagles. Eisenhower At the Eisenhower School, students and staff finished off their annual SOUP-er Bowl food drive, where they bring in non perishable foods and make a prediction on who they think will win the Super Bowl on February 9th. This year, thanks to the District Culture and Climate Committee, they got some help and a ton of additional cans of food from our generous staff and students from across the district. Looking at the picture, it appears that many people at Eisenhower and across the district will be rooting for the Eagles. The food will be donated to the local food pantry. Truman At the Truman School, Ms. Skala, an Eisenhower School teacher and self published author, visited to read her latest book, The Hair Tie , which is a story about the kindness of strangers and how a simple gesture can impact someone's life. Proceeds from her book sales go to animal rescue and pediatric cancer cause and treatment research. In addition, students participated in Theater Week, which was a great success. The students who participated did an outstanding job performing The Golden Goose . They also learned the importance of trying their best and that when they do so, anything is possible. Wilson At the Wilson School, students put their math skills to the test in the Math Masters Challenge: New Year Edition, which is an exciting month-long competition led by Mrs. Kiernan, the Math ASI Teacher. Using My Math Academy, students in grades K-3 worked hard to log practice time, improve their skills, and compete for the top spot. The challenge saw record participation, with 70% of students logging in for 60 minutes or more in the final week alone. The top class from each grade level earned a popcorn and movie party, while the grand prize-winning class celebrated with a pizza party, generously donated by Rustoni’s Pizza of Sayreville. The Wilson School is proud of all the students who participated, showing dedication, teamwork, and a love for learning. The Math Masters Challenge may be over, but the excitement for math continues. Additionally, thanks to the amazing Wilson School PTO, students and their families had a blast during the second annual Sweetheart Dance. They had an amazing time dancing the night away with their friends and loved ones. We also commend and thank some SWMHS student council members who volunteered their to help out with the event. In Project Before, students and staff at both the Cheesequake and Selover Schools also participated in the district-wide SOUP-er Bowl food drive. In fact, students in Miss Susan's and Miss Keri’s class at the Selover School who voted on which team will win, were deadlocked at 8-8 on the winner. Bombers Beyond In the Bombers Beyond 18-21-Year-Old program, the Brew Crew welcomed the leadership team from the Leading Edge childcare program into the newly opened Bomber Store and Hub, which is located next to the Cafe, for their annual Leadership Summit. Outstanding Outcomes We c ongratulate SWMHS seniors Mia Emory, who recently committed to attend and play wheelchair basketball at the University of Arizona next year, and Katelyn Henderson, who recently committed to attend and play softball at Brookdale College next year. In addition, we commend SMS teacher Cassidy Ritter and Garden and Friends on Main preschool teacher Megan Baine who are also Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders. They performed magnificently yesterday during the Super Bowl. We are so proud of them. We commend SWMHS Class of 2018 graduate Mital Amin. Mital went on to Rutgers University where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology and Neuroscience. She is now working towards her Doctorate in Physical Therapy (PT) at Arcadia University. Mital has had the opportunity to work with many amazing PTs, researchers, and doctors, exposing her to the best ways to treat patients and ensure they return to their daily lives. She hopes to pass her Board exams in October as she finishes up her last few courses and begins a six month clinical rotation before pursuing a specialty in Orthopedics or Sports Medicine, and continuing to be a helping hand for her patients through their rehabilitation journeys. When not working, Mital has had the opportunity to travel abroad, visiting France, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal. Likewise, we commend Class of 2011 graduate Karryne Kelly (MacLean). After graduating in 2011, Karryne went on to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and History at Rider University, graduating at the top of her class for both Social Studies Education and History majors. She has been teaching 7th grade Social Studies at Manalapan Englishtown Middle School since graduation. She designed the current curriculum, and a few years back received a grant to start a Classroom Economy. Karryne has also since married her college sweetheart and they now have a beautiful two year-old. When not in the classroom, she likes to spend most of her time hiking, kayaking, or playing Dungeons and Dragons. Bomber Nation salutes all our students, staff, and community members for representing Sayreville in such an impeccable manner. They Rock! Visual & Performing Arts In visual and performing arts, we commend and congratulate SMS 8th grader Austin Yu who last week performed magnificently in the Region Band and Orchestra Concert for the 2nd year in a row. In fact, he performed so well that when he went to the 1st rehearsal, he was told he was eligible to audition for the Intermediate All-State Orchestra. Likewise, we commend SWMHS art students Erica Thu, Gabriel DeJesus, Olivia Charmello, and Karina Cardoso for painting the new Bomber Shop logo. Moreover, we commend and thank Erica for designing the logo. In addition, the SWMHS Choir is now running a new miniseries called "Songs From a Hat," where every week they attempt a new song that was chosen by the choir members themselves. This week they covered the Franki Valley hit song, Can't Take My Eyes Off You. Check it out by clicking here . Athletics In athletics, we commend and congratulate Chidi Chukwurah, SWMHS Boys Basketball player, who scored his 1,000 career point last week in the SWMHS Basketball Team's impressive win over Ferris High School, which after also defeating South Plainfield High School earlier in the week, was their 18th win of this historic season. Likewise, we congratulate and commend SWMHS Girls Basketball player Natalia Glazewski, who as a freshman, was named NJ.Com's Player of the Week. Together with her teammates, they defeated South River and Woodbridge Magnet High Schools last week to improve their season record to 10-14. On the mat, the SWMHS Wrestling Team beat West Windsor-Plainsboro South High School to extend their record on the season to 16-8. On the track, we congratulate Angeleah Lepre and Molly Logan from the SWMHS Girls Indoor Track and Field Team for medaling in the Varsity Classic Meet at the NYC Armory. Angeleah placed second in the 3,200 Meter race, while Molly finished fourth in both the 800 and 1,600 Meter races. Likewise, Chase Rogers from the Boys Team finished second in the 400 meter race. Win or lose, all our amazing student athletes continued to compete fiercely and demonstrate the teamwork and sportsmanship that makes us all proud to be Bombers.
