Each year the in-school and virtual program is designed to tie into STEM/STEAM education by creating connections between science and arts in the classroom. Through this integration, students are encouraged to think creatively and approach problems in new and innovative ways by working on real-world issues. One of Aaron Copland’s most iconic pieces, Appalachian Spring, reminds us of the importance of family and community. Set in the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania, it was originally composed as a ballet for Martha Graham’s dance company. The well-known song, “Simple Gifts”, is a key melody throughout and celebrates the Shaker principles of simplicity and humility. Other works that have inspired generations include Stravinsky’s enchanting The Firebird, Life in Exposition of Water, a collaboration by Dan Gallery & Brent Edmondson which focuses on the element of water, the captivating Dreams of Fireflies by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Bernstein’s lively Overture to Candide and more. Take a journey with us as we share beloved selections from the last decade.
