Elementary Athletics Program Update
Elementary Athletics Program Update Dear Elkhart Families, I am writing to share an important update regarding our elementary athletics program. As announced during last night's Board of School Trustees meeting, we have decided to pause elementary athletic programming for the 2026-2027 school year. This was a difficult decision, but it is necessary. Our primary goal is to conduct a thorough, comprehensive review of our current offerings. We want to ensure that every program we provide aligns with our long-term goals for student development while also addressing our current annual costs, which exceed $250,000 for coaching staff alone; notably, this figure does not include expenses for security, ticket sales staff, or the athletic director's salary. By taking this time to pause, we can identify ways to make our programs more effective and financially sustainable, allowing us to focus our resources directly on classroom instruction and keep academic priorities at the heart of our mission. We acknowledge some may be disappointed, it is important to note that most neighboring school districts have not added or continued to financially support elementary athletic programming. Nothing within this temporary measure will affect student participation in opportunities through external partnerships within the community. During this transition, our Athletic Director, Joshua Fletcher, will be working with us to reorganize the athletic department and review these structures. We believe this process will allow us to create a stronger, more sustainable experience for our students and families in the future. Importantly, this decision applies only to elementary athletics; our middle and high school athletic programs will continue as planned. We remain dedicated to providing meaningful opportunities for your children, both inside and outside the classroom, and I look forward to sharing our progress with you.

Personal Communication Policy Approved by the School...
Personal Communication Policy Approved by the School Board Dear Families, Following up on our update last week regarding Indiana’s new "Bell-to-Bell" digital device law, the school board has officially reviewed and approved our district's updated policy. Moving forward, our school communities will be working together to ensure our classrooms remain focused, deeply engaged, and free from the daily distractions of personal devices. We know this represents a significant shift in daily routines for our students, families, and staff, and we want to be as clear and transparent as possible about what to expect. You can review the full policy as approved at tonight's school board meeting here: Updated Policy As we prepare for this transition, here are some key details: Senate Enrolled Act 78 (Effective July 1, 2026): Commonly known as the "Bell-to-Bell" device restriction, this law requires that from the morning arrival bell until the final dismissal bell, all personal internet-enabled devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds, must be turned off and put away. This policy applies during class time, lunch, recess, and passing periods. Secure Storage: Grades 6-12: Upon arriving at school, students will place their devices in school-provided storage. Grades K-5: Students will keep their devices off and located in designated areas. Medical & Learning Accommodations: We are aware that some students rely on personal digital devices for vital medical needs or specialized learning accommodations. Limited exceptions will be honored for students with documented medical plans, IEPs, or 504 plans, with formal approval provided by the superintendent or a designee. Staying Connected: We completely understand the need for families to stay connected. If you have an urgent message for your child during the school day, you can call your school’s main office. Our building staff will ensure your child receives the message immediately, standard to our traditional school safety and communication procedures. What Comes Next? We are currently finalizing the day-to-day procedures for every campus.

Important Update: New "Bell-to-Bell" Law
Dear Families, As we prepare for the upcoming school year, our top priority remains creating a safe, supportive, and highly engaged learning environment for your children. Today, we are writing to share a change driven by Indiana state legislation. Effective July 1, 2026, public school districts are required to fully implement Senate Enrolled Act 78, often referred to as the "Bell-to-Bell, No Cell" law. What is the "Bell-to-Bell" Law? This state law requires all public schools to prohibit students from using personal internet-enabled devices, including but not limited to cell phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds, during the school day. "Bell-to-Bell" means that from the morning arrival bell until the final dismissal bell, these devices must be turned off and put away. This policy applies during class time, lunch, recess, and passing periods. Key Details for Families Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible for our students and families: Secure Storage: Upon arriving at school, students will place their devices in school-provided storage, where they will remain secure until the end of the school day. Medical & Learning Accommodations: We understand that some students rely on personal digital devices for vital medical needs or specialized learning accommodations. Exceptions will be honored on a limited basis, and approval will be given only by the superintendent or a superintendent designee for students with documented medical plans, IEPs, or 504 plans. Staying Connected: Parents will be able to communicate with their child by calling the main school office to leave a message, standard to our traditional building procedures. What Comes Next We will be sharing all specific campus procedures and board policies prior to the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
