ECS Weekly Highlights 3/6/26
Celebrating Dr. Seuss Day at Hawthorne Students at Hawthorne Early Learning Center celebrated Dr. Seuss Day as part of National Read Across America Day on March 2. The day honors the birthday of beloved author Dr. Seuss and encourages children across the country to develop a love for reading. Through stories, rhyming activities, and creative classroom fun, our youngest learners explored the imaginative world of Dr. Seuss while building important early literacy skills. A Fun Start to IREAD Testing Elementary schools across the district are kicking off IREAD testing with plenty of encouragement and school spirit for our 2nd and 3rd grade students. From hallway parades and cheering staff to silly hats and fun themed celebrations, schools are finding creative ways to help students feel confident and supported as they begin testing. These moments are a great reminder that our entire school community is behind our young readers as they show what they’ve learned. Gymnastics Team Advances to Regionals Congratulations to the Elkhart High School Gymnastics team on earning a third-place team finish at the Sectional on Saturday, February 28 and qualifying for Regionals. The team will compete at Huntington North High School on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. A special congratulations goes to Regan Iannarelli, who captured her second consecutive Sectional championship on the balance beam. Back to State for EHS Senior Ian Congratulations to Elkhart High School senior Ian on placing first in Radio Broadcasting at the Speech Sectional tournament held at Concord High School. His outstanding performance has earned him a spot at the state tournament on March 14 at Penn High School. This marks Ian’s second consecutive year qualifying for the state competition. If you see Ian around campus, be sure to wish him luck! Weekly Highlights 2/27/26
Coding Comes to Life at Mary Daly Students in Mrs. Moskowitz’s STEM Computer class are taking coding beyond the screen and into hands-on learning with VEX 123 robots. After building their coding skills, students had the opportunity to program and race their robots, bringing their learning to life in an exciting and interactive way. Through collaboration and problem-solving, students are strengthening critical thinking skills while having fun with STEM. Inspiring the Next Generation of Musicians Middle school band, orchestra, and choir students are visiting elementary schools to promote music education and inspire younger students to participate. These performances highlight the strong connections across our schools and the opportunities that await students as they grow. Pictured above is West Side Middle School’s Band, Orchestra, and Choir visiting Cleveland Elementary School. Freshman Division Algebra Students in Mr. Current’s Algebra class were hard at work solving inequalities through collaborative group activities. Working in squads at the board, students demonstrated critical thinking, teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills while supporting one another along the way. It was great to see so much engagement and energy as students built both confidence and mathematical understanding together. QB Academy Launches at EHS Offensive Coordinator Javonte Hence recently brought together quarterbacks from 6th grade through the varsity level for the first QB Academy meeting. The after-school session united middle school and high school athletes, creating an opportunity to build skills, leadership, and continuity across the program. With 6th, 7th, and 8th grade quarterbacks already engaged alongside upperclassmen, the future is bright for EHS Football. Events March 1: Gentlemen and Scholars Spelling Bee March 4: eLearning (SAT in-person at EHS) March 5: Roosevelt Literacy Night March 7: ISSMA Instrumental/Vocal Jazz Festival The Hunger Games: Help EHS Take the Trophy! Elkhart High School is competing in a county-wide food drive for Church Community Services, and the stakes are high! EHS is facing off against surrounding Elkhart County schools to see who can collect the most donations for neighbors in need. Special Guest Reader at Bristol Guest readers always bring extra excitement to our elementary classrooms. At Bristol Elementary, one of our 5th grade students surprised his younger sister’s class by serving as a guest reader during library time. It was a special moment that brought smiles all around and highlighted the strong sense of community within our schools. A World-Class Musician Visits EHS On Thursday, EHS had the distinct honor of welcoming world-famous violinist Midori for a special visit with our orchestra students. Students experienced a live performance and had the unique opportunity to work directly with Grammy Award winner Midori. She shared her artistry, insight, and expertise, providing both inspiration and invaluable instruction to our young musicians. Freshman Division Intro to Culinary Intro to Culinary students at the Elkhart Freshman Division put their foundational skills into action this week. Using proper mise en place, careful recipe reading, and accurate measuring techniques, students created homemade, from-scratch buttermilk pancakes. Senior Wrestler headed to State! Congratulations to senior wrestler Kyle Sommer on qualifying for the IHSAA State Tournament! Kyle is a sectional and regional champion and earned a fourth-place finish at Semi-State to secure his spot at State. Dancing into Valentine’s Day Fourth and fifth grade students at Beardsley Elementary celebrated Valentine’s Day with a festive dance party in the gym. Students enjoyed music, time with friends, and a fun opportunity to celebrate together as a school community. 8th Graders Explore the Freshman Division This week, 8th grade students from across the district visited the Freshman Division as part of their transition to high school. During their tours, students explored classrooms and programs, learned about extracurricular opportunities, and gained a firsthand look at daily life as a freshman. What made the experience especially meaningful was that the tours were led by current Freshman students, who shared their insights, advice, and personal experiences. Three Straight Wins for the Lions The Boys Basketball team is heating up with three consecutive victories, including an exciting overtime win over Bremen earlier this week. The team continues to build momentum as they prepare for their next challenge. Join us tonight as they take on South Bend Riley at home! Come out and support our student-athletes as they look to extend their winning streak. Hekin Music Grant Presented to EHS The Elkhart Education Foundation visited Elkhart High School this week to present a generous Hekin Music Grant to the Music Department. The grant provides supplemental support for music education and programming, helping ensure students continue to learn, grow, and thrive through the power of music. We are grateful for community partners who believe in the impact of arts education. Thank you to the Elkhart Education Foundation for your continued support! Freshman Scholars at Work Students in Mrs. Eichorst’s Honors English class dove into thoughtful small-group discussions centered on their current novel, Klara and the Sun. Using annotations and text evidence, students collaborated to share insights, make inferences, and deepen their understanding of the text. Their engagement and discussion skills were impressive! Math in Action at Mary Daly Students in Mrs. Boggs’ first grade class at Mary Daly Elementary are strengthening their math skills through hands-on learning. Using dice, students built two-digit numbers and compared values to determine greater than, less than, or equal to. This interactive activity helped reinforce number sense, place value, and comparison skills while keeping learning fun and engaging. EHS Boys Bowling Advances to State Congratulations to the EHS Boys Bowling Team on capturing the Semi-State Championship! The team will compete next at the IHSAA State Championship on February 14. Best of luck as they continue their outstanding season! The Gingerbread Man Is Caught! Students in Ms. Kindig’s class at Hawthorne Early Learning Center, put their listening and teamwork skills to the test while following clues to catch the sneaky Gingerbread Man. The room was filled with excitement, laughter, and big smiles as students celebrated their sweet success together! ECS Highlights (Jan. 30th)
Thank You For A Successful eLearning! With the severe winter weather leading to 3 days of eLearning this week, we would like to take a moment to thank our students, staff, and families for working together to effectively keep the learning going at home. We would also like to make special mention to the building services, transportation, custodial, and tech staff for their incredible support during this time! Reaching Out To Future Student Musicians This week, 5th grade students that will attend West Side Middle School in the fall visited the school for a recruiting concert. The 7th/8th grade choir, band, and orchestra performed highlights from their repertoire, as well as demonstrated the different instruments/voice types that go into each ensemble. ECS continues to grow outstanding student musicians! Tower Gardens Coming Along Excellently Students and teachers at Mary Daly are happy to report amazing progress on their school tower garden! These gardens, provided by Goshen Health, give students hands-on experience with growing and maintaining their own plants, encouraging STEM education. Flowers were recently added to Daly's garden for variety and color. Thank you to Goshen Health for providing this opportunity! Trailblazing Unified Program We are wishing the Elkhart High School Unified Cornhole team good luck as they travel to compete in state competition this weekend! This comes shortly after they held their first ever competition earlier this month. EHS is one of just 16 high schools statewide to offer this pilot athletic program for students of all abilities. EHS Athletes Exemplifying Leadership This week, many of our Elkhart High School student athletes attended a leadership conference at the Elkhart Health & Aquatics Center. Alongside nearly 100 athletes in the NIC conference, they engage in conversations and group activities focused on leadership both in and out of competition. We are proud of our EHS athletes for representing our school with integrity and professionalism! A Hands-On STEM Project All About Bugs In Mrs. Kiehl's 3rd grade class at Mary Daly, students studied how traits are inherited from animal to animal. They designed adult insects, and worked with partners to predict what their offspring might look like. Thank you to Ethos for supporting learning by providing great lessons like this! Creating A Game Plan For Freshman Year The Freshman Division School of Study counselors work hard to prepare our middle schoolers for their high school careers! This week, they stopped by West Side Middle School and held information sessions for all WSMS 8th graders. From outlining academic expectations, to discussing diploma and post-graduation opportunities, to helping with class registration, our EFD counselors did an excellent job! Student Art Coming To The Museum! You'll soon be able to see the work of Elkhart Area Career Center's Graphic Design and Commercial Photography programs at the South Bend Museum of Art! A collective 25 projects submitted by 16 EACC students were recognized with the museum's Scholastic Art Award. You'll be able to see their work at the museum throughout March. ECS Highlights (Jan. 9th)
Wrestlers Advancing To Regionals Tomorrow, January 10th, Elkhart High School girls wrestlers Kalista Inman and Zoe Hunt will compete in the IHSAA regional wrestling tournament. Both recently qualified at the recent sectional tournament (their success included Kalista coming in first in her division). EHS wrestler Karma Birkhead also rounded out her season that day with an excellent performance. Congratulations to all three wrestlers! EACC Student Science Fair Judges Elkhart Area Career Center students in the Education Professions program served as judges in Woodland Elementary's school-wide science fair. These EACC students have been stationed at Woodland this school year as interns, where they collaborate directly with teachers on day-to-day lesson planning and classroom management. Woodland students were excited to show off their findings, and the EACC interns did an awesome job celebrating students’ hard work. Students Back At The Keys As the spring semester gets into full swing, Elkhart High School piano class students are getting their first practices of the year in. These classes are available to students of all skill levels, from those who have never touched the instrument before to more experienced players. We are excited to hear their growth in the coming months! Founding Fathers Simulation Mrs. Churchill’s honors social studies students at North Side Middle School were transported back to the post-Revolutionary War period, where they roleplayed as the founding fathers as they debated the rules of their new nation., Students took on their assigned role’s beliefs, and acted out what it may have been like to debate these foundational issues.
