This special event brought together students from: • Blanche Sprentz Elementary • Cordova Gardens Academy of Arts and Sciences • Cordova Meadows Elementary • Cordova Villa Elementary • Navigator Elementary • Peter J. Shields Elementary • Rancho Cordova Elementary • Theodore Judah Elementary • White Rock Elementary • Williamson Elementary This experience was made possible through a cherished partnership with the Harris Center and the donor-funded ClassACTS program, which covered the cost of theater access for all students, staff, and chaperones, removing barriers so every child could be inspired by the arts. This week, the Board of Education advanced two significant projects that will directly benefit students and staff. Supporting Cordova High School’s Modernization As part of the major construction and modernization project at Cordova High School, the Board approved a lease agreement with Mobile Modular Management Corporation to provide interim modular facilities while the existing C-Wing is replaced. This agreement includes 12 relocatable classrooms, a teacher workroom, and a restroom building, all of which are fully equipped with HVAC systems, ramps, and program-ready features. These temporary facilities ensure that students and staff can continue teaching and learning without disruption as the project moves forward. Funded by Measure S, this is an important step in the modernization project and one more way the district is honoring the trust voters placed in us to create high-quality learning environments while carefully managing taxpayer resources. Expanding Opportunities at Riverview STEM Academy The Board also approved the purchase and installation of permanent modular buildings for Riverview STEM Academy, which is growing to serve students in grades six through eight. These new facilities will provide dedicated classrooms, a staff workroom, and specialized space for STEM programs—helping the school expand opportunities for hands-on, innovative learning. Delivered through a cost-efficient piggyback bid process with Merced River School District, the project is expected to be completed in time for the 2026–2027 school year. The project, funded by Measure R, reflects the community’s continued investment in preparing students for future success. In the meantime, the two portables installed last year for Riverview’s sixth grade expansion will be repurposed across the district, ensuring every dollar goes further to meet student needs.   UPCOMING BOARD MEETINGS October 16 - Regular Board Meeting November 6 - Regular Board Meeting November 20 - Regular Board Meeting  December 11 - Regular Board Meeting

  • Board Briefs and Updates, September 19, 2025

Board Briefs and Updates Folsom Cordova Unified School District September 19, 2025 Career Technical Education: skill-based learning & real-world experience At last night's Board Meeting, a presentation was given highlighting key successes from our Career and Technical Education (CTE) summer 2025 programs, including student participation, industry partnerships, hands-on learning experiences, and student opportunities and successes. These demonstrate the impact of CTE in preparing students for college and careers, and support continued investment in high-quality CTE opportunities. CTE offers multi-year course sequences that blend academic learning with technical training, preparing students for both college and career pathways. Many programs align with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) and feature high-quality curriculum tied to state and industry standards, combined with real-world, hands-on experience. Follow the link to learn more about Career Technical Education at FCUSD schools: bit.ly/3I6yKzb.   Board Approves Purchase for New High School in Rancho Cordova At the September 18 meeting, the Folsom Cordova Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to approve the purchase of property at 3215 Prospect Park Drive in Rancho Cordova, marking an exciting step toward creating a new high school.  FCUSD is excited to bring a new high school to Rancho Cordova, the first high school the District will open in nearly 20 years, marking a historic milestone for our community and a bold investment in the future of our students. This innovative campus will serve approximately 500-800 students and is designed to redefine the high school experience by offering a variety of learning options, including rigorous academics, cutting-edge Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, and flexible alternative learning options. Students will have access to: A-G and advanced coursework to prepare students for college. Early College opportunities in partnership with local higher education institutions. Independent study options and Alternative Education options to provide flexible learning pathways. Career Technical Education (CTE) programs offered through a one-stop-shop model that connects students to workforce opportunities. By focusing on flexible programs that prepare students for both college and the workforce, this high school will become a hub for innovation and real-world learning. Additionally, with the adaptive reuse of an existing office building, the District can deliver this project more quickly and at a lower cost than building a school from the ground up, which represents around a 30% savings compared to traditional new construction. This project is being funded through SFID #3 bond funds for facility construction South of HWY 50. Next steps include completing feasibility studies, facility design, and approvals through the Division of the State Architect to ensure the property is converted into a safe, modern learning environment that reflects District goals. Construction and renovation will take place over the next two years, with the goal of opening to students in 2027.    FCUSD Choirs Perform at California’s 175th Birthday Celebration Folsom Cordova USD choir students took center stage on the steps of the State Capitol on Wednesday, September 10, to celebrate California’s 175th birthday. The Sutter Middle School Advanced Choir and Folsom High School Choirs were invited to perform as part of the state’s Admission Day festivities. The invitation marked a return for FCUSD performers, who also participated in last year’s celebration. A heartfelt thanks to the teachers, chaperones, and the amazing choir directors for making this opportunity possible. Your dedication and support helped create a truly memorable experience. We are so proud of the students for their talent, hard work, and the way they represented their schools and community on such a special occasion. Building Character, Leadership, and Resilience Beyond the Game Students heard from an inspiring lineup of speakers who encouraged them to value teamwork, show integrity, and lead with empathy on the field and in their communities. Special thanks to Cordova High School Principal Amy Strawn and her staff, with special appreciation for JP Dolliver, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, whose support was key to bringing the conference to life. We also thank FCUSD Director of Athletics and Physical Education Peter Maroon for his leadership and ongoing commitment to supporting student-athletes across the District.  Like and share the story with friends and family on Facebook.    Facilities Comprehensive Plan Engagement Survey As part of our effort to create a Facilities Comprehensive Plan, we would like to hear from you!  The proposed plans in this survey were developed with input from campus-specific committees and feedback gathered at a community-wide meeting held across the District. These efforts are part of creating a Facilities Comprehensive Plan, a long-term strategy to guide improvements to our school buildings and learning environments. This plan will help us prioritize upgrades, address current and future facility needs, and ensure our schools continue to support students, staff, and the broader community effectively. Your input is a vital part of this process. Please take a few moments to complete the survey and share your thoughts. To learn more about the Facilities Comprehensive Plan and how it will shape the future of our schools, visit our website and watch the informational video. • Welcome to the 2025–26 school year

Message to the Community Folsom Cordova Unified School District August 6, 2025 Dear FCUSD Community, Welcome to the 2025–26 school year! Whether you are stepping onto campus for the very first time, or returning with familiar faces and fresh goals, we are so excited to kick off another year of learning, growth, and connection across our schools. This is an exciting time for our District, and your energy, support, and dedication are what make our community truly special. From classrooms to offices, from playgrounds to performance spaces, we’re ready to make this a great year, together. Please enjoy this special back-to-school message from our Superintendent, Erik Swanson: As we begin the 2025–26 school year, I want to warmly welcome back all members of the Folsom Cordova Unified community, our students, families, educators, support staff, and community partners. The first day of school is always filled with hope, excitement, and possibility. This year, we enter with a renewed focus on something essential to our collective success: connectedness. Our theme of connectedness is about more than just being together. It’s about truly knowing one another, listening, supporting, and holding each other to high expectations because we care. We believe that when students feel seen, supported, and challenged, they thrive. And when families, schools, and staff are deeply connected, our entire community grows stronger. We are grounding this year’s work in a mindset we call the Warm Demander, educators who lead with both high care and high expectations. In every classroom, on every campus, and in every role across the district, we are committed to relationships that lift students up while helping them reach their fullest potential. This mindset extends to all of us, as educators, caregivers, neighbors, and community members. Together, we hold high expectations for what our students can achieve, and we match those expectations with deep care, compassion, and connection. These aren’t opposing forces—they are what make our schools exceptional. As we start this new chapter, I invite us all to stay connected: To our students—by honoring their voices and encouraging their dreams To one another—by showing up with trust, collaboration, and kindness To our families—by strengthening the partnerships that support learning inside and outside the classroom Let’s make this a year where every student knows they belong, every family feels welcomed, and every staff member feels valued. That’s The FC Way, where care and high expectations fuel excellence.   Here’s to a joyful, connected, and impactful school year ahead. With appreciation and excitement, Erik Swanson Superintendent Folsom Cordova Unified School District   Stay Connected and Informed As we begin the year, don’t forget to stay connected and informed. Throughout the summer, our students, educators, and support teams engaged in purposeful learning, preparation, and connection, laying a strong foundation for the year ahead. Held at 12 school sites and supported by meals and transportation, the program blended academic instruction with hands-on exploration, including a STEAM-focused field trip to the Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC). A standout feature was Freedom Schools, a culturally enriching literacy and leadership program in partnership with the Children’s Defense Fund, where students developed reading skills and explored civic responsibility through daily read-alouds, music, and community building.   Students Take Center Stage at FCUSD’s Summer VAPA Camp Students explored performing arts at VAPA Camp, a two week arts experience for rising middle schoolers that culminated in dazzling performances of Willy Wonka at Gold Ridge and Rancho Cordova Elementary Schools. Students rotated through classes in dance, drama, music, and visual arts, culminating in a vibrant, student-led musical. Students participated in team-building activities, heard from former student board members and FCUSD Superintendent Erik Swanson, and began shaping plans to elevate student voice. Their efforts reflect the SAB’s mission: to amplify student voices, promote unity, and improve our schools through collaboration.   Connected Leadership Powers FCUSD’s Back-to-School Readiness While students learned and explored, #TeamFCUSD stayed busy behind the scenes, ensuring every school is ready for Day One. Our staff have worked hard to set the stage for a successful 2025–26 school year. Principals gathered at the District Office to connect and prepare for the year ahead. As part of the vital instructional and operational information, Superintendent Erik Swanson and his Leadership emphasized the importance of connectedness in creating supportive, student-centered school communities.   FCUSD Welcomes New Teachers with Connection and Purpose New teachers joining schools across Folsom Cordova Unified for the 2025–26 school year gathered at Vista del Lago High School on July 31 and August 1, to kick off their journey with connection, purpose, and excitement. From engaging, team-building activities to a delicious breakfast and lunch prepared and served by our very own leaders, it was a meaningful and memorable start to the year.   Preparing Schools for Student Success FCUSD Maintenance & Operations teams worked tirelessly across all 37 campuses this summer, power-washing walkways, maintaining HVAC systems, and creating clean, safe spaces to welcome students back. We can’t wait to see our students back on campus and in class!   This summer is a powerful reminder of what makes FCUSD so special: students who rise to the challenge, educators who guide with heart, and a community committed to growth, inclusion, and opportunity. As we get set to begin the 2025–26 school year, we do so with gratitude, pride, and excitement for the outstanding learning that awaits our students. • Board Briefs and Updates, June 20

Board Briefs and Updates Folsom Cordova Unified School District June 20, 2025 FCUSD Students Dazzle in Sweet Performance of Willy Wonka Musical FCUSD elementary students wowed audiences this week with colorful and creative performances of Willy Wonka, presented at Gold Ridge Elementary School and Rancho Cordova Elementary School as the grand finale of VAPA Camp. This two-week arts camp is designed to support rising 5th and 6th graders as they explore electives in Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Art, culminating in a fully staged production. This year’s show featured rotating lead roles, handmade sets, and plenty of heart, providing students with a meaningful introduction to the performing arts and a boost in confidence as they transition to middle school. Follow the links to see the full photo gallery on FCUSD’s Facebook and Instagram.   Elementary Health Course and Curriculum Adoption At Wednesday night’s Board meeting, the Board of Education approved a new Elementary Health Curriculum for 5th grade as part of a multi-year plan to expand health education in grades 3-5. This proactive, developmentally appropriate health education program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make healthy choices. Research shows that early prevention education and the development of strong health literacy skills support physical and emotional well-being, personal safety, and academic engagement. The enhanced curricula expands beyond growth and development to include injury prevention, healthy nutrition, disease and illness prevention, substance use awareness, social‑emotional learning, and community health. It also aligns with Education Code 51931–51939—to ensure transparency, parent notification, and equity, and includes necessary adaptations for English learners and students with special needs. This process allows school districts to assess and report progress on state priorities using locally available data and evidence of implementation. The Local Performance Indicators in this report include: Basic Services and Conditions (Appropriately Assigned Teachers, Access to Curriculum-Aligned Instructional Materials, and Safe, Clean and Functional School Facilities)  Implementation of State Academic Standards  Parent and Family Engagement  School Climate  Access to a Broad Course of Study  This self-reflection process is a key component of the state’s accountability system and serves to inform continuous improvement efforts. While state assessments remain limited in scope, FCUSD utilized local data, including information from the School Accountability Report Card, to demonstrate ongoing progress and identify areas for growth in support of student success. To view the presentation with more information, please click HERE.   We want to share a reminder that all communications will briefly pause during our PowerSchool upload the week of July 7, as information is updated for the 2025-2026 school year.  Thank you for staying connected with us!   UPCOMING BOARD MEETINGS July 10 - Board Meeting August 14 - Board Meeting September 4 - Board Meeting September 18 - Board Meeting

Across Folsom Middle, Sutter Middle, Cordova High, Folsom High, and Vista del Lago High, student-athletes demonstrated excellence in competition, academics, and community service. Participation in secondary school sports grew by 5% (244 more students), and our elementary track meet saw a 23% increase. These athletes truly embody the values of leadership, discipline, and teamwork on the field and in our community.   Community Schools Update Community Schools at Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) presented their annual report, highlighting a significant achievement: a 4.5% increase in average student attendance, rising from 89.8% in 2023–24 to 94.3% in 2024–25. This improvement reflects the impact of a whole-child, equity-focused approach that strengthens support for students and families. With grants supporting six campuses, Cordova Meadows, Cordova Villa, Mills Middle, Kinney High, Williamson, and White Rock Elementary, Community Schools continue to build on the strengths of Rancho Cordova’s youth, families, educators, and community partners. The goal is to transform each school into a comprehensive system of support that promotes academic growth, student wellness, and on-time graduation. Throughout the year, SAB members engaged with Superintendent Erik Swanson at regular meetings and met with various District department leaders. A student favorite was their collaboration with Food Services, where they helped select menu items, complete with taste testing! Most importantly, the SAB provided ongoing and meaningful insight and feedback to District leadership and the Board, ensuring that student voice played a vital role in shaping decisions and guiding governance throughout the year.   FCUSD Budget Projections At the June Board Meeting, staff presented the proposed budget for the 2025–26 school year, along with multi-year financial projections. The budget was developed based on projected enrollment growth and anticipated state and federal funding. In accordance with standard procedures, this presentation served as a Public Hearing. Formal adoption of the budget is scheduled for consideration at the Board Meeting on July 18. The District is facing a projected structural budget deficit, meaning that ongoing expenditures are expected to exceed ongoing revenues in the years ahead. Key drivers of the deficit include: Slowing growth in state revenues Rising costs for employee compensation, health benefits, and operations Expiration of one-time federal and state relief funds Increased costs to maintain and expand student services, including special education, transportation, and mental health supports Without action, the District’s reserves will continue to decline, which may jeopardize its ability to sustain essential programs and services that directly support students and classrooms. To proactively address these challenges, the District has formed the Superintendent’s Budget Advisory Committee (SBAC) for the 2025–26 school year. The SBAC includes representatives from all employee groups, parents, students, and both district and site leadership. The committee will meet regularly throughout the year to review financial data, evaluate budget-balancing options, and provide recommendations that prioritize student learning while working to eliminate the structural deficit. Let’s make these ceremonies unforgettable!   Ride Smart, Stay Safe What to Know About E-Scooter and E-Bike Rules We're partnering with local law enforcement to share helpful safety tips and important reminders to keep our community’s youth safe while using e-scooters, e-bikes, and e-motorcycles. Because these are motorized, self-propelled vehicles, they are subject to the California Vehicle Code. That means there are specific rules to follow, just like with cars and motorcycles, to ensure everyone stays safe on the road. Local law enforcement is encouraging riders and families to stay informed and follow the rules. Understanding and following these guidelines helps create a safer environment for everyone.  In some cases, not following the rules could lead to things like citations or even vehicle impoundment, so staying informed is the best way to avoid issues. There are several different classes of e-bikes, and each class has different rules. Anyone may ride Class 1 and 2 e-bikes. Class 3 e-bike riders must be 16 or older. Riders on class 1 or 2 e-bikes under 18 must wear a helmet. All riders of class 3 e-bikes must wear a helmet. Riders must adhere to the 15 mph speed limit on all city bike trails. Any e-vehicle capable of speeds greater than 30 mph is classified as an E-motorcycle, even if your child insists it's an e-bike. E-motorcycles are subject to the same rules as gas-powered motorcycles, including the need for use of a DOT approved helmet, a motorcycle license, insurance, and registration. What class of e-bike do you have? Find out and learn more information about these vehicles and laws, and responsibilities at www.folsom.ca.us/ebikes-escooters.   Summer School Bus Information Please be informed that the Summer School transportation application and route information are now available for viewing on our Transportation Department webpage. Kindly note that bus passes will not be issued for Summer School. Instead, drivers will have a list of approved student riders for each route. We appreciate your cooperation and encourage you to review the information at your earliest convenience. Summer School Transportation Information   Memorial Day Just a reminder that school sites and District offices will be closed Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.
