Improving How We Report Student Progress in K-5
Dear K-5 Families, As you may recall, principals shared with families at the beginning of this school year that we were exploring new ways to improve our K-5 reporting methods, including report cards and parent-teacher conferences. After gathering input from parents, students, and staff, we are excited to share the next steps in this initiative. What We Heard: Families want clear, transparent, and meaningful communication about their child’s progress. Parents and students would like opportunities for engagement and reflection beyond the report card. There is a need for greater clarity and consistency in reporting practices. Our Plan Moving Forward: To address these needs, our approach will focus on two key areas: Nurturing Growth through Report Cards: Report cards will be simplified, focusing on umbrella standards, incorporating behaviors that promote learning, and adjusting reporting frequency. Fostering Connections through Parent Communication: Parent-teacher interactions will become more frequent and structured, providing meaningful discussions about student progress. What’s Next? Following our decision-making process and established timeline, your school’s principal has shared these updates with K-5 staff. We will begin to update our processes to reflect changes and these updates will take effect in Fall 2025. Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education. We look forward to enhancing how we communicate student progress!

As part of this process, Maria Martin, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, presented findings at the March 11 Board of Education meeting. Stakeholders emphasized the need for well-rounded, transparent, and personalized communication about student progress, along with greater clarity, consistency, and more opportunities for parent engagement and student reflection beyond the report card. This feedback has resulted in the development of a plan that focuses on two key areas: Nurturing Growth through Report Cards Fostering Connections through Parent Communication The Board affirmed that the decision-making process was followed appropriately, allowing us to move forward with communication and implementation. The next steps include principal-led presentations to building staff on March 28, followed by district-wide communication to families later this spring sharing the upcoming changes. Recognition of our District 44 staff, students, and community members. Melinda Lauer, Instructional Assistant Pleasant Lane Principal Stephanie Loth recognized Melinda Lauer for her innovative approach to engaging students and fostering a positive start to their day. Principal Loth shared that Melinda consistently finds creative ways to involve the students, such as setting up multiple bubble machines and playing age-appropriate music to greet kindergartners in the morning. In addition, Melinda observed that many students were arriving early to school and spending time on the playground. This prompted her to create the "Walkers & Talkers" club. This initiative combines the benefits of a 30-minute daily walk with opportunities for students to engage in meaningful conversations and build relationships. This has quickly become one of the more popular clubs at Pleasant Lane. District 44 World Expo April 25 District 44’s World Expo is back! This decision was made after careful consideration of weather reports and in consultation with neighboring school districts and local authorities. Together, we have determined that closing schools is the best course of action to ensure the well-being of our community.
