Spotlight: A Buoyant Voyage Students in Mr. Leppold's science class embarked on an exciting hands-on learning experience by deploying a buoy in the Gulf Coast. This project allowed them to track real-time data on ocean currents, temperature, and environmental conditions, giving students an up-close look at the dynamic forces shaping our planet. Mr. Leppold relayed their findings below: October 1: My students built an ocean buoy a few years ago and I finally got it deployed today in the Gulf Stream off the Coast of Florida near the Bahamas! Water depth was 2,300 feet, current "running strong due North at 4 knots". This is the 4th buoy my kids have sent into the Gulf Stream over the past 25 years. One traveled from Cape May New Jersey to Long Island New York, the rest might still be out there . . . or got eaten by a sea creature. I'll update everyone on where this one travels to, hoping to make it across the pond to England or Ireland. October 9: Buoy recovered 160 miles to the north, more details to follow. We may be able to redeploy. Current thought (yes I meant to do that) is that the wind blew it out of the Gulf Stream and into shore. Captain Baxter thought Milton might send it across the pond, but the water had other plans. Transportation Update Transportation has been a significant area of concern this year. While we typically face challenges, this year’s issues have been more pronounced, impacting our families. To proactively address anticipated challenges, Spring-Ford's Transportation Department worked with Custer’s Garage to create new routes over the summer. These adjustments were made in response to: Two major road closures scheduled for this year, in addition to minor closures we've already experienced A nation-wide driver shortage A reduction in routes to account for the consistent shortfall of 4-5 drivers daily last year Despite our efforts, we did not anticipate the extent of the current driver shortage Custer’s Garage is experiencing. The bus company is actively working to hire and train new drivers and is exploring additional support options. However, the process of bringing on new drivers takes time. We are hopeful that bus runs will become more stabilized and accurately timed in the coming weeks. Please know we are working diligently alongside Custer’s Garage to support both their efforts and our families during this time. Important Message from Mr. Rizzo
This message was sent to all Spring-Ford staff and families, and students in grades 5-12. Good afternoon, Spring-Ford staff, families, and students, In recent days, rumors have spread online about potential harm to students across multiple grade levels. I would like to take a moment today to address this directly. The screenshot circulating in our community is also being shared in communities across the state. Authorities believe it originated in Ohio, based on details from the original post. Given recent events, it's understandable that this rumor has caused concern among students and parents. Reports were made through the Safe2Say Something (S2SS) system, and after thorough investigation by the S2SS Team and local authorities, no evidence supports the validity of these rumors. Please rest assured that we will continue to monitor any new reports that come to our attention. As we discuss school safety, I want to remind our community of four key initiatives currently in place: Spring-Ford Police Department : The eight-person Spring-Ford Area School District Police Department is dedicated to ensuring the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. The department focuses on: Protection of our Students, Staff, and Community Vigilant, Ethical and Impartial Enforcement of Law Critical Incident Preparedness and Response Crime Prevention, Reduction and Deterrence ALICE Training : Since 2016, Spring-Ford students and staff have participated in ALICE Training, which prepares them for unannounced intruder scenarios. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. The program provides guidance on when to use traditional lockdown procedures and teaches practical strategies for barricading rooms, using mobile devices, communicating with law enforcement, and when to consider evacuation or counter techniques. Safe 2 Say Something (S2SS) : Spring-Ford introduced the Safe2Say Something anonymous reporting system in 2019. This program empowers students, teachers, and administrators to recognize warning signs and signals of individuals who may pose a threat to themselves or others and to "Say Something" to a trusted adult or use the anonymous reporting system. The program focuses on: Recognizing at-risk behaviors, especially on social media Taking all signs and signals seriously and acting quickly by speaking to a trusted adult Reporting concerns anonymously through the S2SS mobile app or website When a tip is submitted through S2SS or directly to Spring-Ford, our School Police Department implements an action plan to investigate, often working closely with local law enforcement. Depending on the nature of the report, actions may include student and family interviews or home visits. While investigation details are confidential, please know that all reports are taken seriously. Digital Citizenship: Students learn about digital citizenship and cyber safety starting in elementary school through our Ram QUEST class. One of the challenges we face is how quickly rumors and misinformation can spread online. Social media can sometimes distribute information faster than traditional sources, leading to the potential spread of misinformation. Parents are encouraged to monitor their children's online activities, including mobile apps, online games, and social media, and discuss appropriate online behavior with them. As always, the safety of our students is our top priority. You may notice an increased presence from local police departments in the coming days as they partner with the Spring-Ford Police Department in reinforcing security throughout our community. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance. Bob Rizzo, Superintendent

Not all items are required for the start of school. Stick to the list: Extra supplies are fun but won't get used and leave your pockets empty. Stick to the supply list, or check with your teacher before going extra. Head to the dollar store for basic supplies: Check for great deals on pens and loose-leaf paper. But don't skimp on the #2 pencil, your teacher loves a Ticonderoga Pencil! Host a back-to-school swap: Round up a couple of families and host an annual BTS swap. Trade toys and books, too! You'll save a bundle. Take inventory: Sort through last year’s supplies to see what is left over or can be reused. Secondary students should bring a backpack, note pad and pens/pencils to the first day of school. Students will receive a list for specific classes, if needed. Please keep in mind that additional items may be requested by your child’s individual teacher, depending on their grade level or class. Back-to-School Shopping Tips Know your stores: Chain retailers may provide shopping lists for all area districts, please keep in mind these retailers do NOT consult with school districts when creating these lists.
