Chief Science Officers
Windber Students Selected as Chief Science Officers Windber Area School District is proud to announce that Adeline Miller, Victoria Burkey, Mayson Oyler, and Kaitlyn Krone have been selected to serve as our district’s Chief Science Officers (CSOs) . The CSO initiative is a groundbreaking program that empowers students to act as their school’s liaison for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and innovation. As CSOs, Adeline, Victoria, Mayson, and Kaitlyn are joining a cohort of student leaders who receive specialized leadership training, develop initiatives to impact STEM opportunities at their schools and within the local community, and collaborate as part of a regional cabinet to share student perspectives with adult STEM leaders. This program is designed to inspire STEM awareness , expand opportunities, and encourage students to pursue STEM education and careers—ultimately contributing to a strong and innovative 21st-century workforce. Preparing Future Leaders To prepare students for their roles, CSOs participate in the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) each year. This year, the institute was held at the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 in Altoona yesterday, September 18th. This institute blends personal growth with team-building activities while providing students with opportunities in networking, leadership development, and strategic planning. CSOs also take part in inspirational STEM activities that strengthen their readiness for both college and the workforce. Through the LTI and their ongoing work, CSOs build vital employability and leadership skills, including: Critical thinking and problem solving Effective verbal and written communication Collaboration and teamwork Responsibility and work ethic Information and technology fluency Shaping the Future of STEM As representatives of Windber Area School District, Adeline, Victoria, Mayson, and Kaitlyn will not only bring forward new ideas to enhance STEM opportunities in our schools but will also work to inspire their peers and strengthen community engagement in STEM education. Their leadership is a powerful example of how students can drive innovation and play an active role in shaping the future.
