  • BOE Update and District News - August 2026

Home of the Waunakee Warriors Committed to Children - Committed to Community - Committed to Excellence Welcome 2026-2027 School Year Welcome to the Waunakee Community School District Board of Education Update and District News. This monthly newsletter is designed to keep our families, staff, and community informed by sharing Board of Education highlights, district news, upcoming events, important reminders, and celebrations from across our schools. Whether you're new to our district or have been part of the Waunakee community for years, we're glad you're here and look forward to keeping you connected throughout the school year.   Welcome Back from Dr. Monica Kelsey-Brown Click here to read a message from Superintendent, Dr. Monica Kelsey-Brown.   Monthly Meeting Recap and Important Information The Board of Education is made up of seven Waunakee area residents elected by district voters. The Board’s responsibilities include providing public education for children of the district, setting the policies under which schools operate, and hiring the staff to administer these policies. School boards are created by the state legislature, and their powers and duties are delegated to them by state law. The Board holds its regular meetings on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (Closed Session at 6:00 p.m.) at 905 Bethel Circle, Waunakee, unless otherwise noted on the agenda. The Board uses BoardBook, a web-based tool for preparing electronic agenda packets and maintaining a searchable archive of meeting materials and approved minutes. This is a summary of the Waunakee Community School District Board of Education meeting. It is not the official meeting minutes, but rather a recap to help our school and community stay informed about the work of the Board of Education. Official minutes are posted in BoardBook after they are approved by the Board at a subsequent regular meeting.     August 10, 2026 Regular Board of Education Meeting The Waunakee Community School District Board of Education (BOE) met on Monday, August 10, 2026. You can view the meeting on our District YouTube Board of Education channel. You can access the documents in BoardBook here. November 3, 2026 Referendum On Monday, August 10, 2026, the Waunakee Community School District Board of Education unanimously approved two referendum questions, by a 7-0 vote, to appear on the November 3, 2026 ballot. The two questions include an operational referendum to exceed the district’s revenue limit for recurring purposes and a capital referendum authorizing general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $97.5 million. The capital referendum represents the next phase of the district’s long-range facilities planning at Waunakee Community High School. This work builds on the district’s ongoing planning to address facility needs, support modern learning environments, and plan responsibly for the future. The operational referendum proposes continuing $2.1 million in staff compensation funding that expires after the 2026-27 school year, and adding $2.1 million in staff compensation funds for each of the next 4 years. These funds will only be necessary if future state budgets do not provide funding for staff compensation to be maintained at the average of Dane County comparables to Waunakee.  Community input has been an important part of this process. We encourage our community to learn more about the referendum questions, review the ballot language and supporting information, and stay informed throughout the fall. The Board also reviewed the district’s referendum communications plan, which will provide information and opportunities for the community to learn more leading up to the election. This webpage will continue to be updated with frequently asked questions, financial information, community engagement opportunities, and other referendum resources. Website: https://www.waunakee.k12.wi.us/community/2026referendum Email: wcsd_communications@waunakee.k12.wi.us  Board of Education Monthly Meeting - Actionable Items The following key actions and updates were taken to support the ongoing development and operational needs of the Waunakee Community School District: With a recommendation from the Policy Committee, the BOE approved updates to several district policies, including Grading Scale, Grade Point Average and Class Rank; Staff Communications with Students; Purchasing Approvals; Security Cameras and Electronic Monitoring Equipment; and Use of Unmanned Aircraft (Drones). As a reminder, our policies can be found on our school district website.  The BOE reviewed an updated financial plan related to the proposed November 2026 referendum, including the $97.5 million capital referendum, projected interest rates, timing of potential borrowing, and refinancing planned for October. Following recommendations from the Facility Committee, the BOE reviewed and approved several items related to district facilities, including South Campus and press box security camera changes, the projected project balance at the Waunakee Community Middle School, the Waunakee Community Middle School track, and motorized blackout shades for consideration at the Waunakee Community Middle School. The BOE approved a resolution to establish a district expulsion hearing officer and appointed the district's hearing officer for the 2026-2027 school year. Elementary principals shared their K-4 School Improvement presentations, highlighting school goals, areas of focus, and plans for continuous improvement during the upcoming school year. Waunakee Community High School Principal Deanne Lensert and Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction Tim Schell presented the district's 2026 Advanced Placement (AP) results, including recent trends and opportunities to increase student participation.   Welcome to ParentSquare Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, the Waunakee Community School District will transition to ParentSquare as our primary school-to-home communication platform. • WCMS Waunaconnect 8/6/2026

August 6, 2026   Welcome 2026-2027 School Year We’re thrilled to kick off a new school year with you and your family. Staying connected is the best way to support your child’s success. Each Thursday by 2:30 p.m., you’ll receive a weekly family newsletter via Parent Square from us here in the Middle School office. Inside, you’ll find important reminders, notes from the principal, upcoming dates, and more. Please take a few minutes each week to read it, ask questions, and get involved—we love partnering with you to make this a great year!   Principal Message Greetings WCMS families, With the new school year quickly approaching, excitement is building! We are already preparing for our students' arrival and can't wait to welcome everyone on the first day. We have a wonderful new middle school building! Although this is very exciting, there will also be a number of changes to protocols and procedures, which means there will be some bumps along the way as staff and students learn how to best use the space to meet the needs of our students. One thing that will be new is the amount of open spaces that bring natural light into our classrooms, hallways, and common areas. To accomplish this, there are open spaces between the first and second floors to allow light to pass through from the clear stories above. Additionally, there is a bridge that passes through the cafeteria, connecting the north and south portions of the building, improving accessibility and traffic through the building. Unfortunately, these are also areas of temptation for some students to engage in behaviors that compromise safety. Please take some time to talk with your middle school student(s) about the importance of safe behavior, and that objects being tossed or dropped, accidentally or intentionally, compromise safety and will be treated as such - warnings will not be given, and disciplinary responses will be elevated. We need to send a clear message on this, and we need your partnership to ensure our students understand the importance of treating our new spaces with respect and ensuring that our school is safe for staff and students. Knowing that there are many new procedures and expectations within the new building, we will be spending much of our advisory time during the first two weeks helping students understand how to use and care for the new spaces in the building. That being said, I have already seen many students in the building over the summer - in the gym, fitness center, cafeteria, classrooms, LMTC, and small group instruction rooms (SGIs). They have been awesome with using and caring for the spaces, and have shared how much they love the variety of spaces and furniture for both learning and just socializing. It’s been great seeing their excitement, and also their willingness to dive in and learn within the new school. We are fortunate to get to work with the students and families in our district, within the wonderful facilities our community has supported. Thank you for all you do for our schools. In preparation for the start of the 2026-27 school year, here are a few pieces of information that you and your child/ren will need to get the year started on a positive note. Please save this for future reference, and yet also remember things may change as our needs change. WCMS Important Dates WCMS Important dates at a glance Back to School 2026-2027 The start of the school year is rapidly approaching; classes begin for 7th grade on Tuesday, September 1 at 8:15 AM and for ALL students on Wednesday, September 2 at 8:15 AM. We are looking forward to welcoming your students this fall and celebrating the many successes they will have!     Middle School Traffic Flow Plan With our new school, comes new processes for students arriving to school. Please see the map for the process.   Schedules Student schedules will be available in Infinite Campus on August 14th- please feel free to log in to your IC account and print them out.  As we get closer to the first day of school, please verify that your child’s/children’s schedules have not changed.  Although this is not common, it does occur as we are still working on some room assignments and schedules for new students, and some adjustments will still be made as we learn of issues or conflicts. Our schedule uses a 6-day rotation, similar to what is used in our K-6 buildings.  If you are looking at your child’s schedule and see numbers after a class, that is referring to the days within the 6 day rotation that the class meets.  If there are no numbers, that is a core class, which meets every day.    Gear up days information Student Gear-Up Days are back! We invite parents to attend alongside their students whenever it is convenient during your assigned time window. Can’t make it? Don't worry, you can pick up all the necessary information during Open House on August 26th or on the first day of school. On August 17th, from 11:30-4:30, all 7th grade students may come to get their locker assignment and a school issued lock. They will be able to put school supplies in their locker and walk the halls with their schedule to become familiar with the building. Please print their schedule at home and have them bring it with them to see where their classes will be. 7th grade students will be issued 1 lock. If they wish to purchase a 2nd lock for their gym locker the cost will be $7.oo for a used lock. August 18th, from 11:30-4:30 will be for 8th graders. PLEASE bring your lock with you when you come. If you have lost it, you will need to purchase a used lock for $7.00. August 19 - final student gear up day from 2-6 pm for any student that couldn't make it Monday or Tuesday.   Open House Night Our Open House night is on August 26th, from 4-6pm. This is a great time to come and meet your teachers. If you were not able to come to a gear up day, this is also a wonderful time to get your locker assignment and lock.   Students who ride bicycles/scooters For the safety of our students, all bicycles and scooters must be parked and locked in the designated bike racks behind the school. Please remind your student that the doors near the bike racks will lock promptly at 8:15 AM. Any late arrivals will need to walk around to the main entrance (Door 1) to check in and enter the building.   School Policy Updates As we settle into our new school building, our team has updated several policies to fit our new layout and routines to ensure the best possible learning environment for our students. Because we are adjusting to a new space, we will closely monitor how these guidelines work day-to-day. If we find that certain procedures need fine-tuning mid-year, we will make updates and keep you informed. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and ongoing partnership as we all get settled into our new school!   First Day of School - 7th Grade Only On September 1st, only 7th grade students will be in attendance.  We will spend the morning helping students become familiar with the building, make sure they know how to use their lockers, do some team building activities, and share expectations and protocols for lunch, hallways, recess, etc.  During the afternoon, we will run an abbreviated schedule so they can get familiar with navigating from class to class, while also meeting their teachers.  All 7th and 8th grade students will attend school on September 2nd, which will be a “2” day.   Chromebooks All students are expected to bring their fully charged school-assigned chromebook to school with them each day, including their first day of school. Students new to Waunakee Community School District will be issued a chromebook and charging cable on their first day.  Students or families with smartphones or some other calendar device may want to set daily reminders to start building good habits regarding charging the chromebook every night.  Information on our school's chromebook policies and procedures can be found on our Digital Learning Plan site. Students with chromebook or account problems should report these issues to the LMTC.   Student Cell Phones and Smart Watches Students who bring cellphones to school are responsible for keeping them turned off and in their locker during the school day, which includes the full period of time between the beginning of the first class and end of the last class of the school day.  Students with smart watches should not be using them for communication or other functions other than checking the time throughout the school day, including lunch.  Failure to follow these expectations will be treated similarly as any other student behavior concern.   Busses If your student rides the bus, please be aware that there are occasional disruptions to pick up and drop off times due to driver shortages and absences.   We are hopeful that the shortage of bus drivers does not impact the school day/schedules/activities. However, it is important to realize that there may be adjustments that need to be made throughout the school year.  Lamers is always looking for more bus drivers - if you are interested in becoming a bus driver, or know someone who is, please contact Lamers at 608-850-5253.    2026-2027 Registration Our online registration for the 2026-2027 school year is live!
