Above & Beyond Awards The Board recently had the privilege of recognizing Valerie Khatadia and Victoria Miller with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award. Our Director of Exceptional Learners, Jennifer Culhan, presented Mrs. Khatadia and Ms. Miller to the Board. Please find her remarks below. Valerie Khatadia "As a Pike High School Counselor, Valerie currently serves as one of our faculty advisors for the Best Buddies program. She is a fierce advocate for our students with more significant needs. She also firmly believes in the power of the school community being strengthened by the inclusion of all students in the school community. This was seen by the Indiana Best Buddies program, and last year, Ms. Khatadia was named the Best Buddies Outstanding Faculty Advisor for the state of Indiana. We are so proud of this accomplishment!" Victoria Miller "Victoria is also serving as one of our faculty advisors for the Best Buddies program. Her day job in Pike is that she is a lifeskills teacher for the PAC program. One thing that Victoria does so well is that she expects ALL of the students to achieve. She has worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for them to interact in the Best Buddies program, creating a fun and inviting environment for everyone – both for the students and the buddies! We are so honored to give Ms. Miller this award. It is well deserved!" This season, Guion Creek Elementary School's Robotics Team, the InvestiGators, won the Build Award and the Excellence Award. The Excellence Award qualified them to compete in the State Finals, which were held at Lucas Oil Stadium. At State, they had a lot of fun with fellow robot enthusiasts from around Indiana. Congratulations to our Red Devil Dancers on their amazing season, which culminated with a 5th-place finish in Hip Hop at the state competition on Saturday. Photo courtesy of Pike Red Devil Dancers The MSD of Pike Township is incredibly proud to celebrate Coach Keith Hollins, who has been named the IBCA District 2 Coach of the Year. Coach Hollins led our Red Devils to a historic 24-2 season, a No. 1 state ranking, and three major championships this year. He took over a program that had won just 21 games in three years and transformed it into a powerhouse with 61 wins in just four seasons. But for those of us in Pike, his impact goes even deeper. As a PHS Class of 2007 alum, a dedicated Credit Recovery teacher, and a coach who has served our district since 2009, Coach Hollins embodies what it means to be Pike Proud. In short, Coach Hollins has dedicated his career to the success of Pike students on and off the court, and we are thrilled to congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition. Remote Learning Information for Families Celebrating Our Young Scientists: 6th Grade Science Fair Winners We are excited to announce the winners of this year’s 6th Grade Science Fair! After weeks of researching, testing, and analyzing data, our students have shown us that the future of innovation is in very capable hands. This year’s projects were diverse and impressive, covering topics ranging from the mechanics of windmills and the chemistry of “elephant toothpaste” to organic batteries and the physics of melting ice. Our panel of judges was impressed with our students' research and presentations. Our judges included community partners Corteva and Stem Connection, community members, Pike graduates, and representatives from Meyer Najem and Lilly. Meyer Najem and Lilly also provided goodies for each participant. First Place: Annabelle Arledge from Guion Creek Middle School. Her project was titled, “Does the Angle of the Windmill Blades Determine the Energy Output?” Second Place: Catherine Ho from New Augusta North Middle School. Her project was titled, “A Gory Guide to Gravity’s True Motives.” Third Place: Gracie Milli from New Augusta North Middle School. Her project was titled “Elephant Toothpaste.” We would like to send a huge thank you to the teachers who provided indispensable guidance and the parents who supported their students throughout the (scientific) process. The goal is to incentivize healthy reading habits and improve reading outcomes. You can learn more from student-journalist Camila Vera's wonderful article for Pike High School's Pike News publication below. TOP READER TURNS PAGES INTO PRIZES BY Camila VERA/reporter For some students, reading is homework. For sophomore Keyse Hernandez Prieto, it is a habit that has turned into recognition. Through Beanstack, a reading program that allows students to log their reading hours, Pike High School encourages students to read more by offering prizes for reaching certain milestones. The rewards often come in themed baskets filled with various items. Hernandez Prieto logged the most hours in the school, making her the top reader. The readers are listed outside of the high school cafeteria. Her love for reading began early and has continued to grow over time. One book that left a lasting impression on her was “Charlotte’s Web.” “Charlotte’s Web. It traumatized me,” Hernandez Prieto said. “It plays a huge part in who I am today. I haven’t eaten pepperoni since fourth grade because of the book.” Over the years, her reading habits have expanded, and she has discovered a favorite genre. “Romance,” Hernandez Prieto said. “Reading love stories is heartwarming and enjoyable.” Her enthusiasm for reading grew even more once she began participating in the Beanstack challenges. “When I started getting rewards,” Hernandez Prieto said when asked why her interest increased. “I read my first book and it snowballed into an avalanche.” She often prefers to read late at night. “At night, staying up late because it’s a better vibe,” Hernandez Prieto said. Balancing schoolwork and reading takes planning, but Hernandez Prieto said she makes time by working efficiently. “I work through all my assignments and everything super fast so I can make time for reading,” she said. For Hernandez Prieto, reading offers more than just prizes — it offers an escape. “It’s nice imagining stories,” she said. “It helps me escape reality.” According to Melissa Hopson, media center assistant, the book challenge is a great incentive for students because “It makes them put down their phones in exchange for a book. It gets them because it can be a challenge for them to pick up a book.” PHS Spring Play Our Pike Performing Arts Department will proudly present High School Drama: A Comedy, March 26th and 27th at 7:00 p.m. in our Pike Performing Arts Center's Studio Theater. The play, which is billed as “glimpses of life and love in high school theatre,” is a series of scenes taking place in a fictional high school theatre department. It was written by our Pike High School Theatre Director, Kristopher Owens, and is, in part, based on some true stories! There’s comedy, there’s drama, and there’s some heartfelt moments. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Congrats to Chami “Mimi” Williams on setting a new single-season Free Throw Percentage record at 92%! That level of consistency from the line is elite — and it speaks to discipline, focus, and countless hours in the gym. Free throws win close games, and 92% is a championship standard. PHS Boys Swimming & Diving Make Pike History Our Pike High School Boys Swimming & Diving Team finished 13th at the IHSAA Swim & Dive Finals! This is the highest team finish in the history of Pike boys’ swimmers & the highest team score at state for the Red Devils. Courtesy of Pike High School Athletics Pike’s DECA program traveled downtown to compete in the DECA State Development Conference, March 1st – 3rd. It was the largest group of students we have had represent Pike at SCDC to this point, and we are all incredibly proud of how hard they worked to represent Pike at the state level. The weekend was highlighted by Juniors Anaiya Delemore and Abby Walker taking 2nd in the state in their event and earning the opportunity to represent Pike at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta at the end of April. Courtesy of Nicholas Russell Pike is a Community That Cares The MSD of Pike Township is fortunate to serve a community deeply committed to the success of our students and families. That commitment was on full display recently when our Board of Education gratefully acknowledged a $4,500 donation from One Fellowship Church. This generous gift is a direct response to a challenge facing many families across Indiana. Due to state-level reductions in CCDF voucher funding, many early learning programs have seen unexpected "over-rate" charges. One Fellowship Church stepped in to cover these costs for every single family in our Loving Care Program at Snacks Crossing Elementary for the current semester. As a member of our Faith in Pike Ambassadors, One Fellowship is more than a donor; they are a constant presence in our district. From providing school supplies and holiday gifts to participating in our Homecoming Carnival and the YMCA Back to School Fest, their unwavering support is a testament to the fact that Pike is a Community that Cares. We are profoundly thankful to One Fellowship for their engagement and heart for service. Our Pike Red Zone Food Pantry will host its next distribution from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9th, at the Pike Freshman Center. Pike Student Journalists Receive State Awards At a special lunch sponsored by the Indiana High School Press Association on Friday, February 27th, four Pike students received state awards for their work on the 2024-2025 publications. Senior Kynadi Chandler earned 3rd place for opinion writing, junior Deidrick Dickerson won third place for his writing portfolio, 2025 graduate Anthony Rangel-Lopez won 3rd place for his photojournalism portfolio, and senior Prestone Bimba won 1st place in the state for news writing. In addition, the yearbook staff received a plaque and was recognized as a Hoosier Star finalist, and Deidrick Dickerson was elected to the IHSPA State Student Board. Yearbook and Newspaper Advisor April Moss, who also serves as the current IHSPA President, shared, "I am so proud of these students and their achievements." New Tradition for a Historic Program On Sunday, February 22nd, Pike Basketball welcomed alumni players and coaches back to campus for a special evening of connection, reflection, and community. Alumni spent time pouring into the current team, sharing stories and lessons about what makes Pike such a meaningful place, both on and off the court. Participants enjoyed fellowship and a shared meal before gathering to watch the IHSAA sectional drawing show, where the team learned its postseason matchup. The evening also included remarks from Dr. Larry Young, Pike Township’s Superintendent and a proud Pike Basketball alumnus, who spoke about the lasting impact of the program and the importance of tradition, mentorship, and service. This event highlighted the strength of the Pike community and the powerful connections that continue across generations. #PikeProud - Week of 2-16-26
Pike is a Community that Cares Located directly across the street from Guion Creek Elementary and Middle School, Solid Word Bible Church is more than just a neighbor; they are a dedicated partner in our mission to serve our community. For years, Pastor Curtis Coston and his congregation have worked hand-in-hand with our school leaders to support Pike educators and families. As an active member of our Faith in Pike Ambassadors, Pastor Coston recently participated in a briefing with Superintendent Dr. Larry Young regarding state-level reductions to CCDF voucher funding. The response from the faith leaders in the room was immediate. They didn't just ask how the cuts would affect our families; they asked, "How can we help?" Driven by that spirit of service, Solid Word Bible Church made a generous donation through the Pike Township Educational Foundation. This gift specifically covers the CCDF over-rate charges for every family in our Loving Care Program at Guion Creek Elementary for this semester. This donation ensures that our families can continue to access high-quality childcare without the burden of unexpected costs. We are deeply grateful to Pastor Coston and the Solid Word congregation for their enthusiasm, their generosity, and their unwavering commitment to the Pike community. Above & Beyond Awards The Board recently had the privilege of recognizing Lori Bonner and Dan Nickel with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award. Lincoln Middle School's Principal, Dr. Monte Tapplar, presented Mrs. Bonner and Mr. Nickel to the Board. Please find his remarks below. Mrs. Lori Bonner "We would like to acknowledge Mrs. Lori Bonner, Lincoln Middle School staff member, for her willingness to serve in a dual role as Guidance Counselor and Assistant Principal last semester! It takes a rare kind of educator to step out of their comfort zone and into a challenging and at-times-trivial work assignment; yet she did so with grace. Mrs. Bonner didn't just fill a seat; she bridged a gap and traded the quiet sanctuary of her counseling office for the high-energy demands of administration. Her willingness to serve in different capacity is a testament to her character, which bears fruit in her good works. Also, she demonstrated an ability to navigate the complexities of discipline and logistics without losing the gentle spirit that defines her. Mrs. Bonner ensured that even in a position of authority, her primary focus remained on support in addition to supervision. She brought a counselor's heart to an administrator's desk - treating every interaction as an opportunity to mentor while remaining genuine, approachable, and reminding us all that schools run primarily on relationships, not just regulations. We are grateful for the time that Mrs. Bonner served in an administrative capacity this school year. The impact of her service has left a lasting imprint on our school's culture." Mr. Dan Nickel "We would like to acknowledge Mr. Dan Nickel, Lincoln Middle School Assistant Principal, for his transformational change and contributions as a building leader. There is a distinct difference between holding a title and truly rising to the occasion. From the Fall Semester to the present, I have observed Mr. Nickel transform and grow in his role as an Assistant Principal. He stepped up to lead school-wide testing on multiple occasions and expanded his reach to support students in grade levels beyond his initial assignment. He demonstrates remarkable willingness to learn new things! Mr. Nickel didn’t just accept these challenges; rather, he navigated them with steadfastness and a calm focus that reassured everyone around him that they were in capable hands. He possesses a refreshing transparency in a profession where it can be all too easy to feel the need to have all the answers. Mr. Nickel has the courage to own his knowledge gaps, and he has the drive to actively seek and capture knowledge. He leans into new experiences on the job, taking the necessary steps to reach the next level of leadership. Mr. Nickel is a true innovator, constantly bringing new ideas to the table that challenge the status quo and improve our school culture. He is an example of one who not only works harder but also leads smarter with a heart geared toward constant growth." School Start Time Committee We are establishing a committee to research potential school start time adjustments for the district. Volunteers from across all levels (elementary, middle, and high school) are invited to participate, along with representative parents, students, and community members. The committee will meet from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at Central Elementary on March 18th, April 15th, and April 29th. If you are available to attend and would like to serve on the School Start Time Committee, please complete the interest form by February 27. Pike High School student-journalist Deidrick Dickerson wrote about three Pike graduates returning to talk to current Pike students about their college experiences in the February 6, 2026, edition of Pike High School's Pike News publication. Please find his article adapted for ParentSquare below. BACK WHERE IT STARTED Three graduates return to share how college expanded their world beyond Indiana. The first week of the 2025–26 second semester marked the return of three Pike High School alumni: Dieynaba “Jayna” Ndiaye of Yale University, Priest Webb of Indiana University Bloomington and Wendy Cruz-Garcia of Purdue University Indianapolis. Ndiaye and Cruz-Garcia gave presentations about their colleges and shared their experiences, while Webb attended to support Ndiaye. All three credited Pike High School for preparing them for college-level coursework through its AP and IB curriculum. Webb described Pike as more than just a school. “I think what I appreciate the most about Pike is that whenever I’m in the building, it just feels like a family reunion,” Webb said. “I feel like the educators here at Pike actually care about their students.” Now at IU Bloomington, Webb has found another supportive community through the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. In addition to community service opportunities, the fraternity has provided him with a sense of brotherhood among men who share similar values. For Ndiaye, college has opened doors beyond Pike and Indiana. She studied abroad in England and has met people from a wide range of backgrounds. “Talking to people is the greatest way to learn about the world and yourself,” Ndiaye said. Cruz-Garcia said her favorite part of Purdue University Indianapolis is its smaller size. She said the campus environment allows students greater access to professors and leadership opportunities in student organizations. “I think the size, as well as just the fact that a lot of people know each other, makes it easier to access resources,” Cruz-Garcia said. “Even in clubs, you have the opportunity to have leadership positions since it’s not as big as West Lafayette, and I personally like that.” Although all three have gained valuable experiences in college, they said the transition has not been without challenges. Ndiaye said her biggest adjustment was rethinking the plans she had made for herself after being exposed to new opportunities at Yale. “I think the scariest thing about college was realizing that the world was actually my oyster and I could do whatever I want,” Ndiaye said. “In Indiana, my life felt like it had to follow one monolithic path. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I wasn’t aware of the other possibilities that were accessible if you knew where to look.” Webb said his biggest challenge was adjusting to the amount of time he had for self-reflection after leaving Pike, where he had been constantly involved in activities. “At first, it hurt me because all these thoughts were swirling around,” Webb said. “I’m a person of faith, so I prayed about it, and I also journaled. Having those outlets helped me see the value in solitude.” Cruz-Garcia said her challenge came from switching her college major. For years, she envisioned attending medical school and becoming an oncologist. However, during her final two years at Pike, she developed an interest in motorsports engineering and decided to pursue it. “For me, it was kind of a jump,” Cruz-Garcia said. “I don’t regret things I do; I regret things I didn’t do because they stay as a ‘what if.’ I didn’t want to live with that feeling.” The decision came with difficulties. Although Cruz-Garcia had some engineering experience entering Purdue, she had not taken formal engineering courses. She struggled in required classes, including coding, but found support by communicating with her professors. “I found it difficult, but professors are really nice and always offer help,” Cruz-Garcia said. “Even after office hours, they host additional sessions. It helps skill-wise, too, because knowing coding is something you can add to your resume." Despite the challenges, all three said they have enjoyed college and encouraged current Pike students to stay open-minded and motivated. “Don’t ever let yourself think there’s something you can’t do,” Ndiaye said. “But also don’t think success just falls into your lap. You have to work for it and find something you’re passionate about.” “Everything happening right now isn’t as important as it seems,” Webb said. “You’ll look back and realize there are bigger things out there.” Cruz-Garcia encouraged students to explore their interests. “It’s OK to explore and to change majors,” she said. “It’s fine to not know exactly what you want to do right away.” While the three alumni are still shaping their future career paths, they said Pike helped prepare them to step outside their comfort zones and grow through their college experiences throughout their four years at Pike High School. Our food service program recently received Innovative School Lunch Makeover and Innovation in the Preparation of School Meals awards. The Innovative School Lunch Makeover Award is in recognition of the improvement of nutritional quality by implementing recipes that reduce sodium and increase whole grains. The Innovation in the Preparation of School Meals Award is in recognition of the addition of more than three recipes prepared from scratch. Honoring Black History & Celebrating Black Excellence “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Courtesy of Dr. Lisa Steele Honoring Black History & Celebrating Black Excellence Slavery was an interruption in Black history, not the beginning of it. Black history did not start in chains. It began with civilizations, governance, science, art and culture. Enslavement disrupted lineage, language and land, but it did not erase intelligence, creativity or identity. When history is taught as if enslavement is the starting point, everything that follows becomes distorted. Black History Month exists to restore the full timeline. Text Source: Southern Law Poverty Center Photos from Pike High School's Annual Black History Month Convocation National CTE Month On Tuesday, February 10th, our CTE Student Ambassadors had a great time at the 8th Grade Career Fair at New Augusta Public Academy North. Students were eager and engaged as they explored our 23 CTE pathways and learned about the many career-focused opportunities available to them. To make the experience interactive and fun, students participated in an Amazing Race-style challenge that guided them through different pathway stations and helped them discover programs in a hands-on way. Their energy and curiosity made it a fantastic event, and we loved seeing them connect their interests with future career possibilities.
