#PikeProud - Week of 11-17-25
Please view this special message from Dr. Young and some of our friends at the Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! Dr. Young's Message: "This time of year provides us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the moments, people, and blessings for which we are most grateful. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the students, educators, and families in the MSD of Pike Township. I am immensely proud to serve as superintendent and thankful every day to be part of such an incredible community that values and actively participates in the education of our youth. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving Break filled with love and gratitude." A group of Pike High School freshmen and sophomores, selected based on their interest in agriculture, biotechnology, and life sciences, recently had an incredible career immersion experience at Corteva Agriscience. During the visit, students toured Corteva’s world-class research and development facilities, where they learned how scientists use genetics, chemistry, and data-driven technology to support farmers and strengthen global food systems. They also participated in a hands-on laboratory activity and explored interactive stations highlighting plant breeding, crop protection, and pest management. One of the highlights of the day was a Q&A session with Corteva professionals, who shared their educational paths, daily work, and advice for students exploring STEM careers. Many of our students expressed that the experience helped them see new possibilities for their futures and gain a better understanding of how classroom learning connects to real-world science. This opportunity was made possible through our partnership with WIISE (Workplace Immersion and In-School Experiences), which supports career-connected learning by connecting schools and corporations and funds transportation and program costs. We are grateful to WIISE and Corteva for opening their doors to our students and inspiring the next generation of scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers. Decorate Wisely: Keep decorations away from candles, fireplaces, radiators, and other sources of heat. Check light strands for frayed wires before plugging in, and replace any damaged cords with new ones! Celebrate Safely: Drive with caution in wet/slippery conditions - leave the house a few minutes early so you don't feel rushed. Commit to staying focused on the road - text messages and social media can wait! Buckle up - every time! Ensure kids are safely secured in the appropriate child restraint for their age/weight. On Monday, Deer Run Elementary had a special visitor from the Riley Children’s Foundation, who delivered a "Bear in the Chair" for one of our students who is currently receiving care at Riley Children's Hospital. The class learned that their classmate has decided the bear is a girl, and that she'll soon trade her Riley t-shirt, seen in the photo above, for a Deer Run uniform, thanks to DRES Resource Teacher Adrianne Kelly-Wright, who visits our student at Riley to provide extra educational support. The bear will sit in our student's chair while they are away, and the class will include the bear in all their activities, documenting her adventures with photos, written updates, and video calls to share their school experience and connect with their friend. The foundation also provided a book, Hello Bear, which was written and illustrated by the art therapists at Riley Children’s Hospital. It will be read in all of our classrooms throughout the school. We celebrate the rich cultures, beautiful traditions, and vital contributions of the Hispanic community. Did You Know? Each year from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States. Hispanic Heritage began in 1968, when President Lyndon B. Johnson first issued a proclamation to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Week. Later, Congress passed a bill to extend the celebration to last an entire month, which was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, and National Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated every year since 1989. The dates for Hispanic Heritage Month were chosen to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations of many Latin American nations—namely, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua—that declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Chile, Mexico, and Belize also each have their own Independence Day celebrations on different days throughout the month as well. In all, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates communities with roots in 20 Latin American countries and territories who make up over 20% of the U.S. population. School Board Member Chosen for ISBA Delegate Assembly Thank you to Angela Barnes, who served as the MSD of Pike Township’s voting delegate at the 2025 Delegate Assembly of the Indiana School Boards Association (ISBA). Delegates approved the Association’s budget for next year, the 2026 Legislative Priorities and Foundational Statements as recommended by school board members who served on the ISBA Legislative Committee, and a slate of officers and directors for the ISBA Board of Directors. Barnes shared, “It was an honor to serve Pike as a delegate. ISBA's 2026 Legislative Priorities are in alignment with our needs as a district. ISBA is a valuable asset to school board members. The quality training and professional development opportunities the organization offers make us better equipped to provide the high-quality educational leadership that Pike deserves.” She also appreciates that the conference provided her with the opportunity to learn alongside fellow Pike board members, Toni Wilson, Nichole Kelley, and Alonzo Anderson, while also networking with board members representing school districts throughout Indiana. The Delegate Assembly meets annually to conduct the business of the Association. The 2025 Delegate Assembly convened on September 15th at the Indiana Convention Center. Each school board in Indiana with membership in the ISBA is entitled to send one school board member to the Delegate Assembly to consider and vote on the business matters of the Association. Currently, all 290 school corporations in the State of Indiana are members of ISBA. 8th Grade College & Career Night All 8th-grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to our College and Career Night, the first of a four-part series offered this school year. Pike Township Educational Foundation Scholarship Spotlight The Pike Township Educational Foundation is proud to celebrate Class of 2025 scholarship recipient Rao Ali Wasim, who is now a student at Indiana University Bloomington. He is pursuing a degree in Computer Science, a passion that began with an introductory class his freshman year and grew through advanced coursework at Pike. While at Pike, Rao was a dedicated member of the National Honor Society, where his volunteer work strengthened his teamwork skills. He also balanced his studies with time on the soccer field and at the gym. We are proud to have supported Rao's journey with a scholarship and wish him the very best as he begins this exciting new chapter at IU. The PTEF's Scholarship Application Window for the PHS Class of 2026 will officially open on November 15th, and the scholarship application deadline will be March 22, 2026. Courtesy of the Pike Township Educational Foundation Action Required: Keep Critical Funding for Students Meals at No Cost for All Students: Our district participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch Program, which allows us to provide free breakfasts and lunches to all MSD Pike Township students. This ensures that every child has access to healthy meals during the school day. Students may still choose to purchase à la carte items or additional servings for a fee, and families can add money to their child’s lunch account at www.myschoolbucks.com. Why Household Income Forms Still Matter: Even though meals are provided at no cost, it remains important for families to complete the Household Income Form each school year. These applications do more than help with meal benefits; they directly impact our ability to qualify for critical state and federal funding that supports students in many areas, including Special Education services, Title I programming, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and eRate funding for discounted internet access in schools. Without enough completed Household Income Form applications, our district risks losing funding for these essential programs that benefit all Pike students. Completing the Household Income Form may also help families qualify for valuable additional benefits. These include free or reduced internet service, scholarships and grants, Pike swimming discounts, reduced fees for early childhood programs, discounts for International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP), and Dual Credit courses, as well as SAT and ACT fee waivers. The Household Income Form can also help determine eligibility for Indiana’s 21st Century Scholarship Program, a state program that provides up to four years of paid tuition at eligible Indiana colleges and universities for income-eligible students. More information about enrollment and eligibility can be found at learnmoreindiana.org/scholars/enrollment-eligibility. Take Action Today: Qualifying families must complete a new Household Income Form every school year. Submitting your application helps ensure that your child, and all Pike students, continue to benefit from the full range of opportunities available in our district. 2025 - 2026 Application Fall Break Please be reminded that this year, fall break will be Monday, October 6th, through Friday, October 10th, with students and staff returning on Monday, October 13th. Have a wonderful weekend!
