  • Pathways to Success: Programs lead to historic numbe...

Pike High School Providing Pathways to Success for Every Student Dear Pike Family, Pike High School is a place where every student is uniquely positioned to chase their dreams. In this article, Pike High School student journalist Kynadi Chandler provides a firsthand glimpse into the experiences, resources, and relationships that have inspired our current students and alumni to succeed. As stated in the article, our students are our greatest success stories. Jeremy Wolley, Pike High School Principal   PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS Programs lead to historic numbers and graduation rate As Jazmyn Solis sits in her dorm room at Indiana University Bloomington, she reflects on her senior year at her now alma mater -- Pike High School. Throughout her high school career, she credits her teachers, administrators and the many programs available to students for her success. The Class of 2025 experienced one of the most difficult educational disruptions as their seventh and eighth grade years were impacted by COVID-19. Despite that challenge, Pike’s commitment to student recovery and support helped its students thrive, earning the school a graduation rate of 97 percent, one of the highest in Indianapolis and the highest in Pike High School’s history for a class its size. Even more impressively, the school reached this milestone without using any waivers. "Pike High School continues to focus on giving students the support and opportunities they need to succeed," Principal Jeremy Wolley said. "From our dedicated staff to our wide range of academic and extracurricular programs, we want every student to leave Pike overqualified to pursue whatever they choose to pursue after high school." With a variety of advanced and effective classes, more than 70 clubs, tutoring opportunities and multiple graduation pathways, Pike ensures every student can find a program that fits their goals. That includes Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Credit (DC), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses designed to prepare students for college and beyond. Last year, 549 students took 918 AP exams, and this year, nearly 600 students are already registered to take close to 1,000 exams - a number that continues to grow as students explore the benefits of early college credit, according IB Coordinator Danielle Vohland. Pike currently offers 28 AP classes, with two more being added next school year, along with a Pre-AP Chemistry class that has boosted interest in AP Chemistry. In addition to AP, Pike offers 45 dual credit courses across academic and career-technical fields, allowing students to earn college credits while still in high school. The International Baccalaureate program continues to expand as well, with 41 students currently enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme and 17 IB courses available. Eleven students from last year's senior class graduated with full IB Diplomas, earning an average of 20-50 college credits before even stepping onto campus, some with as many as 76 transferable credits after duplicates were removed. "These programs give students a leg up in the college admissions process," Vohland said. "They not only prepare students academically, but they also save families thousands of dollars in tuition and help students build the time management and study skills they'll need in college." For Solis, that support went beyond academics. "Mr. Pilarski (animal science teacher) was my biggest supporter," she said. "When I was having a bad mental day, he was always there. Mr. Csikos also helped me create the step team and the multicultural board. He was there every step of the way." "The class of 2025 showed an incredible amount of resilience and determination throughout their four years at Pike High School. They never gave up, continually impressing me with their drive and the success of the entire class," Csikos said. "Many students left a lasting legacy by creating new clubs, finding ways to get more of their peers involved and pushing each other to the finish line. Their impact will be felt at Pike for years to come." Solis said that it was more than just the people, though, that helped her become successful. It was also the opportunities she had. Now a freshman at IU, Solis is already halfway through her sophomore year in credits thanks to Pike's dual credit and AP classes. "The classes I took at Pike helped me a bunch with college and life now," she said. "Every student can meet their goals if they use the resources Pike offers appropriately." Solis encourages students to explore their options early. "Find your passion and see if Pike offers classes along those lines," she said. "This is a time to explore because you're not yet paying for it." While academics are a strong focus, many students participate in Pike's wide range of extracurricular activities (more than 70 in total), which offer opportunities for involvement beyond the classroom. Programs such as National Honor Society, Young Men of Purpose, Robotics Club, Guitar Club, Black History Club and Art Club, while new clubs like SOUL and the Multicultural Board provide additional avenues for students to explore their interests. Pike's performing arts programs, including band, dance, choir, orchestra, theatre, and color guard, also engage large numbers of students each year. These activities give students multiple ways to get involved and build connections throughout their high school experience. One of these activities truly inspired one alum to do his best at school. “Pike Baseball provided me with major support,” graduate Anthony Rangel-Lopez said. “Coach made sure we were on top of our grades. You couldn’t go to practice until your grades were up.” Rangel-Lopez also found inspiration in Pike's graduation pathways. Pike High School is one of only a few schools statewide with a full onsite career center, offering 28 career pathways ranging from construction and automotive to cybersecurity, health sciences and underground utilities. These programs allow students to earn industry-recognized state certifications, gain hands-on experience and explore future careers before graduation. “At first I joked with my counselor that I wanted to join the Underground Utilities program, and I ended up being one of the best students,” he said. “By the second day, I was already working with virtual reality. They encouraged me to jump right in.” Courses like Preparing for College and Career and teachers such as Mrs. Hill in Nutrition and Wellness also made a difference. “She would always listen,” Rangel-Lopez said. “She taught us how to cook and made sure everyone felt included. Honestly, she taught me life skills.” Rangel-Lopez was not the only one who believed Pike made a difference in his education. "I learned almost everything I needed to know from Pike" “I learned almost everything I needed to know from Pike,” Solis said. “Remember what you’re doing it for. Everyone has a reason they’re pushing. Remember who you’re fighting for; it should be yourself always, but sometimes that’s not enough. That’s when you lean on the people here who care.” Solis and Rangel-Lopez are just two stories of many. “Our students are our greatest success stories,” Wolley said. “When they leave Pike High School confident and prepared for life, we know we’ve done our job.”

Teacher Creativity Fellowship Grant Congratulations to Alexis Warren, who was selected to receive a highly competitive Lilly Endowment Inc. Teacher Creativity Fellowship Grant. Ms. Warren's proposal is titled, "Reef-lections of Renewal: Conservation, Family and Global Perspectives," and she will use her funding of up to $15,000 to explore the Great Barrier Reef, hike national parks, engage in coral conservation, and learn from Aboriginal traditions while traveling in Australia. Ms. Warren, who teaches science at the Pike Preparatory Academy, shared, "Being a recipient of the Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program allows me to bring authentic, firsthand scientific experiences into the classroom. Observing the Great Barrier Reef and cutting-edge coral conservation research in person will boost my ability to teach complex topics such as climate change, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience with greater depth, accuracy, and relevance. The stories, photographs, and real-world examples I gather will help me present complex science lessons in a more tangible and engaging way. Exposure to Aboriginal perspectives on harmony with the land will also help students see science interconnected with culture, ethics, and responsibility. Most importantly, returning renewed and inspired, a primary goal of this program, ensures that my students at PPA benefit not only from new content but from a teacher who is reenergized and deeply connected to the science I teach."   2026-2027 Academic Calendar On Thursday, January 22, 2026, the MSD of Pike Township School Board of Education approved the academic calendars for the 2026-2027, 2027-2028, and 2028-2029 school years. 2026-2027 Academic Calendar Please note that the waiver days (October 9, 2026, and January 4, 2027) are pending approval from the Indiana State Board of Education. • #PikeProud - Week of 1-12-26

All MSD of Pike Township schools and offices will be closed Monday, January 19th, in honor of the life and indelible legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   Above & Beyond Award At their regular meeting on January 8th, the Board recognized Courtney Perry and Adrainne Kelley with the Superintendent's Above and Beyond Award. Please find the compelling reasons that Principal Graham nominated them for the awards below and join us in sincerely thanking them for their love for and dedication to the students and families we serve. "Ms. Perry serves as an Exceptional Learners Instructional Assistant at Deer Run Elementary, working primarily with our fourth- and fifth-grade students. She is someone who is always willing to step in and assist wherever she is needed. This recognition is in honor of Ms. Perry’s unwavering support of one of our fourth-grade students, who is an English Language Learner. This student joined us last school year from Chile with limited English proficiency and significant medical needs. Today, he is vibrant, communicates effectively in English, and confidently advocates for himself. He frequently requests Ms. Perry’s support because of the trust and connection she has built with him. Each year, our fourth graders participate in a swimming field trip. Due to this student’s medical needs, we reached out to his family to see if a parent could attend so he could participate safely. Unfortunately, neither parent was able to do so. His excitement quickly shifted to comments like, “I don’t want to go anyway.” Ms. Perry immediately came to me and said she would attend the trip and get in the water to support him. When we shared this with the family, they were elated. Because of Ms. Perry’s willingness and thoughtfulness, this student was able to experience swimming for the first time alongside his peers. Ms. Perry’s actions ensured access, inclusion, and belonging. She did more than provide support—she removed a barrier and created a moment of joy and confidence that this student will carry with him. That is the very definition of going above and beyond, and we are proud to recognize her this evening." "Ms. Kelley serves as one of our three exceptional learners teachers, and she is truly a gem—always willing to assist, especially in areas that others might deem challenging. This recognition is for what Ms. Kelley did for one particular family. Earlier this year, we had a student enroll at Deer Run as a homebound student while receiving care at Riley Children’s Hospital. Ms. Kelley frequently offers to support students requiring homebound instruction, and this situation was no different—except that this student had not been in school for some time and had only been serviced virtually. Ms. Kelley took it upon herself to ask the hospital if she could come in person to provide instruction. With everyone in agreement, she began visiting the student at the hospital. The excitement this child showed each time Ms. Kelley arrived was truly remarkable. Ms. Kelley also worked closely with the hospital staff to arrange virtual classroom visits and supported the Bear in the Chair program, ensuring the student remained connected to her peers. Even on days when the nurse shared that the student had struggled throughout the day, she never wanted to miss her time with Ms. Kelley. As the student began her transition, the family specifically requested that Ms. Kelley be present. What Ms. Kelley provided to this student—and to her family—in her final days went far beyond instruction. She offered comfort, consistency, dignity, and love. That level of compassion, dedication, and humanity cannot go unrecognized. Ms. Kelley truly exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond, and it is an honor to recognize her this evening."   Congratulations to our New Augusta North 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams on their Raymond Park Holiday Invite Championships! • #PikeProud - Week of 1-5-26

Last weekend, our Pike Red Devil Dancers participated in their first competition of the season, where they placed first in Hip Hop, 2nd in Jazz, and won the Sportsmanship Award! We would also like to congratulate their coach, Cierra Barnhart, who was selected as the 2026 Pro Bowl Cheerleader for the Indianapolis Colts. We are grateful to Coach Cierra for sharing her time and talent with our students.     Above & Beyond Award Before winter break, the Board had the privilege of presenting Liz Mitchell, who serves as an Application Support Analyst in our Technology Department, with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award. Our District Chief Technology Officer, Chad Heck, shared, "There is so much work that happens in a school district that most people never know about. Liz Mitchell is a superstar of this behind-the-scenes work. In this age of increased data reporting requirements, Mrs. Mitchell skillfully manages and validates data from numerous sources across the district. Frontline office staff at the schools count on Mrs. Mitchell to help them wade through state reporting requirements and get them across the finish line. We wish you happy winter holidays and a wonderful winter break. There will be no school from Friday, December 19th - Friday, January 2nd. We look forward to welcoming our students and staff back on Monday, January 5th!   Home for the Holidays! Staff Sgt. Justin Toomer, a 2006 PHS alum with a son now at Pike High School, connected with Pike High School's Principal Jeremy Wolley in October while on a 10-month international deployment with the US Army. His wife, Amber, also a Pike High School graduate, anticipated that he would return home from his deployment in early 2026. Staff Sgt. Toomer was able to coordinate an earlier-than-anticipated return home and wanted to surprise their children for the holiday season. Last week, Staff Sgt. Toomer and Mr. Wolley's planning culminated with a surprise visit to his son's JROTC class, the same program that fueled Staff Sgt. Toomer’s desire to join the US Army as a student at Pike High School. It was truly a beautiful full-circle moment. Reflecting on the beautiful full-circle moment, Principal Wolley shared, "I’m grateful we were able to create such a special moment for this PHS family during the holiday season. I am also appreciative of our RDTV News crew for capturing this moment, and to Master Chief Hall and Commander Shake for their collaboration." Courtesy of Jeremy Wolley   CPES Above & Beyond Award Recipient The Board recognized Dr. Krista Tobin, who serves as the Literacy Cadre at College Park Elementary School, with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award. Principal Botsford shared, "Dr. Tobin consistently exceeds expectations, demonstrating unparalleled dedication to the teachers, students, and families of College Park. Dr. Tobin leverages data to ensure every teacher is able to better meet students where they are. She provides targeted planning support by utilizing diagnostic assessment data to guide teachers in their planning.  Dr. Tobin offers coaching sessions where she helps teachers analyze student work and helps with planning to ensure teachers can effectively implement high-leverage reading strategies tailored to specific learning needs. Dr. Tobin's determination to foster an engaging learning environment is evident in her daily work. She offers support by modeling instructional techniques in classrooms as well.  Dr. Tobin has built strong, lasting relationships with students across all grade levels. Her impact extends far beyond the school day. She works to keep in touch with former students and their families, often checking in on them. Also, she is the lead for our after-school REACH program, yet another way she dedicates her time to our scholars.  By demonstrating her own high expectations and personal best, she encourages both staff and students to embrace challenging work." NJELC Above & Beyond Award Recipient The Board recognized Briana Craig, who serves as an Early Learning Lead Classified Instructor at the Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center, with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award. Mrs. Blanden, who serves as the NJELC Coordinator, shared, "This school year brought new opportunities and challenges, including the addition of a new inclusion classroom. While stepping into something new can feel daunting, Ms. Craig approached this role with courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to her students. Any initial apprehension quickly transformed into confidence, and she has risen to the challenge every single day. Ms. Craig builds genuine, trusting relationships with families and treats each child as though they were her own. Her classroom is a place where students feel safe, supported, and celebrated. She leads her team of Instructional Assistants with confidence and care, ensuring student success while fostering a fun, collaborative classroom culture. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Craig has continued to step into leadership roles within our school community. This year, she proudly serves as Social Committee Chair, P.A.L.S Club Teacher Liaison, and School Fundraising Co-Chair, strengthening staff connections and supporting initiatives that benefit our entire program... Loss may involve not only the absence of a loved one, but also the loss of familiar feelings, meaningful places, or special objects that once brought comfort and security. Children may show their grief in different ways, such as acting out, becoming quiet, or asking repeated questions. Caregivers can help by listening, using simple and honest words, and letting children know their feelings are okay. Keeping daily routines can help children feel safe during a difficult time. With love, patience, and support, caregivers can help children cope with grief during the holidays and throughout the year. “Even during the holidays, when grief feels heavy, hope can be found through love, shared memories, and meaningful moments together.” Please find resources posted below for your consideration: Indiana 211 - The Indiana Databases for essential community resources Brook's Place for Grieving Children offers various grief support groups for ages 3-29. 988 - The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline - you can call and/or text when you are in need of someone to talk to Cummins Behavioral Health Systems offers youth and family therapy and life skills services The Wellness Department Resources for Students and Families Guide   Information regarding weather-related closings or delays will be: Communicated directly via call, text, and email sent to the numbers on file for parents/guardians. • #PikeProud - Week of 11-17-25

Please view this special message from Dr. Young and some of our friends at the Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! Dr. Young's Message: "This time of year provides us an opportunity to pause and reflect on the moments, people, and blessings for which we are most grateful. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the students, educators, and families in the MSD of Pike Township. I am immensely proud to serve as superintendent and thankful every day to be part of such an incredible community that values and actively participates in the education of our youth. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving Break filled with love and gratitude."   A group of Pike High School freshmen and sophomores, selected based on their interest in agriculture, biotechnology, and life sciences, recently had an incredible career immersion experience at Corteva Agriscience. During the visit, students toured Corteva’s world-class research and development facilities, where they learned how scientists use genetics, chemistry, and data-driven technology to support farmers and strengthen global food systems. They also participated in a hands-on laboratory activity and explored interactive stations highlighting plant breeding, crop protection, and pest management. One of the highlights of the day was a Q&A session with Corteva professionals, who shared their educational paths, daily work, and advice for students exploring STEM careers. Many of our students expressed that the experience helped them see new possibilities for their futures and gain a better understanding of how classroom learning connects to real-world science. This opportunity was made possible through our partnership with WIISE (Workplace Immersion and In-School Experiences), which supports career-connected learning by connecting schools and corporations and funds transportation and program costs. We are grateful to WIISE and Corteva for opening their doors to our students and inspiring the next generation of scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers. Decorate Wisely: Keep decorations away from candles, fireplaces, radiators, and other sources of heat. Check light strands for frayed wires before plugging in, and replace any damaged cords with new ones! Celebrate Safely: Drive with caution in wet/slippery conditions - leave the house a few minutes early so you don't feel rushed. Commit to staying focused on the road - text messages and social media can wait! Buckle up - every time! Ensure kids are safely secured in the appropriate child restraint for their age/weight. Test your smoke detector batteries monthly.   Community Care Services & Supports We recognize the strain of rising costs, the uncertainty surrounding the availability of SNAP benefits, and the impact these factors may have.
