  • Darien 61 Community Update, BOE News, and BOE Regula...

Dear Darien 61 Community, Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, I hope this message finds you well. It’s hard to believe, but we’ve already reached the end of the first trimester, and parent-teacher conferences are starting this week. This also means report cards for students in grades K–5 will be coming home this week. Important Report Card Information As a reminder: Grades 6–8 follow a quarterly grading schedule. These students received their report cards in Skyward on October 31, 2025. Grades PreK–5 follow a trimester schedule. Students in grades K–5 will bring home their first-trimester report cards on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. (Pre-K students do not receive report cards.) This year, the district is transitioning to electronic distribution of all report cards to support consistency across all grade levels. For this first trimester, grades K–5 will still receive a paper copy. Beginning with the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, all report cards will be available electronically. Directions for accessing electronic report cards will be shared closer to the end of the second trimester. Assessment Reports Along with report cards: Parents of students in grades 1–8 will receive Fall NWEA MAP assessment reports. (K does not take NWEA until Winter) Students in grades 4–8 will also receive their Spring 2025 Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) results. We’ve included some important updates and information about these assessments later on in this newsletter—please take a few moments to review them. Included in this update you will find information on the upcoming Regular BOE meeting to be held on November 18, 2025, as well as BOE News from the October 28, 2025 BOE meeting. The RIT scores themselves remain the same, but the national comparison group has been updated to reflect current student performance trends. Key Takeaways for Families Same Test, New Context: The MAP Growth test you know has the same RIT scale for measuring growth, but the national comparison group (the "norms") has been refreshed for the first time since 2020. Why the Change? The new norms account for post-pandemic shifts in student performance and improvements to the test's design (EISA), which now selects items more closely aligned with grade-level content. Percentile Shift: Since national student performance has generally shifted downward, your child's RIT score may now correspond to a higher national percentile rank than it did previously. Example: A score that was previously at the 50th percentile might now be at the 56th percentile, even if the student's learning hasn't changed. What This Means: Your child’s percentile now provides a more accurate comparison against students across the U.S. today. How are we using the data? As we implement these new norms, we are taking two key steps to ensure every student is supported: Reviewing Support Needs: We are comparing current results against previous norms to ensure that no student who needs academic support (intervention) is missed during this transition. Evaluating Advanced Programs: We are thoroughly reviewing assessment scores and percentile changes to ensure our advanced learning opportunities are accurately identified and continue to meet the needs of all qualifying students. Learn More: We encourage you to review the detailed report you will receive and talk to your child's teacher if you have any questions. You can also find more detailed information at NWEA's Blogspot.   Illinois State Assessment (IAR) Change of Proficiency Information As you may already know, every Spring, ALL students in grades 3-8 must take the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR). IAR is the state achievement test in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. This year, The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has introduced new, unified proficiency benchmarks for IAR. These changes are designed to provide families, students, and educators with a more accurate picture of student performance and better align with real-world college and career expectations. What Does "Proficient" Mean? Being proficient means your child is on track in their learning for their grade level. The proficiency benchmark is the specific score a student needs to reach on a state assessment to be considered on track. What is Changing? The new benchmarks aim to correct past inconsistencies: Old Benchmarks were Misaligned: Previously, Illinois' benchmarks for math and English language arts were considered the toughest in the country, meaning many successful students were not deemed "proficient" on state tests. New Benchmarks: The new benchmarks better reflect student learning expectations, as well college and career readiness. Unified Performance Levels: All state tests will now use the same four performance levels: Above Proficient Proficient Approaching Proficient Below Proficient What is NOT Changing? The test itself (IAR) is not changing. The state learning standards (what students are expected to know) are not changing. Projected Impact on Proficiency Rates In both ELA and Mathematics, more students are expected to receive a "Proficient" or higher score. This indicates that both of the previous proficiency benchmarks were too high. Note: You won't be able to directly compare overall proficiency rates to prior years due to these shifts, but you can still track your own student's growth using their score or Student Growth Percentile (SGP). What Will I See With My Child's Report? The report will include your child's score, performance level (e.g., Proficient), and a Student Growth Percentile (SGP). The SGP tells you how much your child grew compared to their peers who started at the same level. The state average for growth is the 50th percentile. The following links provide further information regarding these changes. ISBE Parent Information Hub: www.isbe.net/feedback Direct Fact Sheet Link: New Proficiency Benchmarks: What Families Need to Know   Updated Long-Term Facilities Plan and 10-Year Life Health Safety Review Planning for the Future of Our Schools Every 10 years, school districts are required to complete a Life-Safety Review. This comprehensive evaluation looks closely at all facilities to ensure our buildings meet current safety and building codes. The review places recommended work into three categories: Category A – Must be completed within 1 year Category B – Should be completed within 5 years Category C – Recommended upgrades that improve learning environments but are not required You can view the slide show that breaks down these costs further with this LINK. District 61 is already addressing items in Category A and planning for Category B improvements to ensure we continue to meet all necessary safety standards. At the same time, we are committed to maintaining high-quality learning spaces for our students and staff. While items in Category C are considered “recommended,” many represent important improvements our schools need — but current funding does not allow us to complete them. Examples include: Brighter, modern classroom lighting Reconfiguration of the Eisenhower entrance and office to enhance school safety Renovation of the Eisenhower locker rooms Playground improvements at Lace and Mark DeLay If the district were to complete all required Life-Safety work along with these recommended and desired projects, the total cost would approach $50 million — far beyond the funding currently available. Because of this, the Board of Education and district leadership are beginning long-term planning now. In the coming months, we will be seeking community input as we explore the best path forward. We value your voice. Together, we can ensure our schools remain safe, welcoming, and equipped to inspire and empower student learing for years to come. Happy Thanksgiving!   Employment Opportunities in Darien 61 Are you looking for an opportunity to work for a great school district, and have a schedule that works with your child's schedule? • Darien 61 Community Update, BOE News, and BOE Regula...

Dear Darien 61 Community, Welcome back everyone! Still can not believe the first few days of the 2025-2026 school year have already come and gone. From the first day of school, finishing up construction work, to sewer back ups, last week proved to be one of the more interesting starts to the school year in a while. Needless to say, last week was a little hectic and stressful with the plumbing issues at Lace School. Despite this set back, everyone remained positive and understanding with the situation. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. Parents, thank you for understanding this messy (literally) situation and working things out when we had to close the school on Friday. This is never easy, but you were all so great about it. Students, thank you for being so well behaved and carrying on in school, even though it may have been a little smelly at times. Teachers, staff, and administrators, thank you for your support and patience as we tried to get the situation under control. So many of you jumped right into action when needed, or offered any help along the way. It was all hands on deck from everyone, and that team work and dedication is what makes Darien 61 so special. Thank you! Below you will find information regarding the upcoming August 26, 2025 Regular BOE meeting, as well as other district happenings. Now that last week is behind us, this school year is looking to be an awesome one! Have a great rest of your week. Sincerely, Robert Langman Superintendent   Darien 61 BOE Meeting Agenda and BOE News Darien 61 Regular BOE Meeting Agendas The Darien 61 Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on August 26, 2025. Approval of the recommendation to retain approved status of hazardous walking conditions. Approval of Resolution to Retain Approved Status of Hazardous Walking Conditions Routes. Approval of the First Reading of Suggested Policy Revisions. The BOE Discussed Federal Grant Status Dr. Langman provided an update as to the status of Federal Grants. As of the July BOE meeting, the Federal government had paused the distribution of the following grants: Title II- Staff Development Title III- English Language Learner TitleIV- Technology/School Safety Dr. Langman then explained how the district was reviewing the programs/initiatives that may be impacted by this pause in distribution, and that the district would support and implement any program/initiative that helps students with local monies. District Update- Facilities Committee A review of summer projects was then provided to the BOE including: Mark DeLay Playground Access- This summer the district is adding a sidewalk to allow for wheel chair access to the Mark DeLay North Playground. Mark DeLay Water pipes/bathrooms- Information was shared that work was well underway, and the school custodial staff and construction company are working to make sure the school is ready for students on day 1. Lace Parking Lot Repair- Information was shared regarding needed parking lot repair at Lace school. Darien Education Foundation Mrs. Pavlu shared the following information on a major grant the Darien Education Foundation will be granting for the 2025-2026 school year. 1- Exploding Coding: a K-2 Beginning Coding Unit The grant will be presented at the the first institute day of the school year. Unfinished Business- Dr. Langman took a moment to address and clarify a concern that was brought the attention of the district regarding participation in the Federal School Lunch Program. The district was asked why it did not opt in for the larger "district-wide" lunch program. Dr. Langman shared how the district has looked at this and already met with the State of Illinois earlier in the Spring to discuss the program and the reporting error the State had for the district's information. At this time is not fiscally responsible for the district to participate. In order for fiscally sound participation, the district needs to have a population of families who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch above 60%. The district is only around 38% as a whole. Future Considerations The BOE then discussed the progress made during the special BOE meeting and progress towards making goals, and how they can seek out further considerations for community communications. Adjournment The BOE then Adjourned the Meeting at 8:05 P.M.   Other Community Updates and Information Positive Start to the School Year Despite the hurdles that popped up last week, start of the 2025-2026 school year was a success. This positive energy and enthusiasm has been off the charts, which just means this may be our best school year yet!   Staff Recognized for Years of Service Each School Year Darien District 61 starts the school year off a staff institute day. We have had good results with the program and will now be expanding its use this school year. Previously, multiple programs/platforms have been used by schools and staff when communicating with our families. This has often resulted in large number of emails/messages being sent to our families. In an effort to streamline communications for everyone, beginning this school year ParentSquare will be used as the main communication tool used by ALL staff. This means most if not all communications/updates for classrooms, clubs, activities, sports will be done through ParentSquare. With that being said, teachers and staff will continue to use other methods of communication as needed to make sure parents and families are well informed about there child's learning (email, phone calls, ect.), but we will try to have most go through ParentSquare. Classroom Phones This year the district will be installing new phones in every classroom. These new phones will serve 2 purposes. First, they will allow our staff to communicate more easily and effectively with our parents. As was shared before, we are inundated with emails, so having the ability to have a phone conversation can make a real difference when discussing your child's learning. Additionally, these new phones will be equipped with an emergency button. This button will provide any classroom or office with the ability to trigger an ALICE alert in the case of a crisis situation in the school. This provides us with another layer of security, and empowers everyone to keep our schools safe and secure.   Darien 61 Summer Work Update Mark DeLay Construction and Other Work This summer, Mark DeLay has undergone major renovations of its water pipes and connecting bathrooms. This final project of the district's 2021 Bond facilities plans provides updated plumbing and ADA compliant bathrooms for our school. Being an old school, Mark DeLay has old water pipes that are buried underground and coming to an end of life. In fact, over the last 5-10 years the district has experienced multiple water pipe breaks at Mark DeLay, where pipes buried under concrete have had to be repaired/replaced. This projects provides a rerouting of water pipes so they are no longer underground, and using up to date plumbing. Part of this project also called for the updating of multiple bathrooms in the school as well. All kindergarten classrooms will now have updated ADA compliant bathrooms with new fixtures and plumbing! Lace and Mark DeLay Offices In addition the district has worked to update the offices at Lace and DeLay. It is amazing what a fresh coat of paint and updated furniture will do!   We Are Hiring We’re currently hiring for several positions across the district, including: bus drivers, aides, and food service positions.
