District Updates Safety of Students While at School The safety and security of students and staff inside our school buildings and outside on school district property is our top priority. Schools are the safest place for students and adults. Our school district operates by policies 903 Visitors to School District Buildings and Sites and 519 Interviews of Students by Outside Agencies to ensure the safety and security of our staff, students and school district buildings and sites. We consulted with our school district attorney to review our policies and procedures when unannounced visitors arrive at our schools. Policy Highlights When an unannounced visitor such as county child protection, law enforcement such as a local police officer or federal immigration agent, non-custodial parent or other persons not listed in the Student Information System come to our schools, building administrators do not disclose information about the student. If law enforcement or child protection requests to interview a student, school officials will contact our district attorney to review the request. Law enforcement will not be granted access to a student or a student’s information without a signed warrant or subpoena from the appropriate courts and authorities. Before access is granted, the building principal will attempt to contact the parent/guardian to inform them of the request. The agency investigating a child protection report is required to provide a court order before interviewing a student at school and the court order may specify that the school cannot inform a parent/guardian. Schools are still one of the safest places for kids regardless of citizenship status. The St. Anthony-New Brighton school district will always protect the privacy of our students and honor their dignity through our procedures and the guidance of our district attorney. School Board Brief Key Takeaways from Tuesday, Dec. 3: There was a Truth in Tax presentation on the trends of the SANB budget, revenue, debt, and more. The School Board passed a resolution to remove weighted grades from SAVHS classes that offer college credit beginning in the 25-26 school year. There was a second reading of Policy 606.5 about Library Materials. The SANB Communications team updated the board about upcoming projects and communications plans. The 2025 Legislative Platform design was approved. The Effective Instruction team updated the board about coaching staff and the St. Anthony Village Education Association also updated the board on Effective Instruction expectations and proposals. More on the Removal of Weighted Grades On December 3, 2024, the SANB School Board passed a resolution to remove weighted grades from all St. Anthony Village High School courses to ensure our district remains in compliance with Minnesota state statutes regarding weighted grades in high schools. This decision was made by the School Board after it was studied by the SAVHS administrative team and initially presented to the School Board in October. Why Now?: Minnesota statute requires that if a school district elects to have weighted grades, all courses that provide post-secondary/college credit shall be weighted. This resolution was passed to provide clarification in high school registration that will occur in early 2025 for the 25-26 school year. The current system of weighted grades is inequitable. This does not meet SANB’s commitment to end Disparity, Disproportionality, and Predictability. Currently, Advanced Placement (AP) and College in Schools (CIS) courses are weighted at SANB, while other courses that also provide college credit, such as Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) and Concurrent Enrollment at 916 Career & Tech, are not. The new policy equalizes our grading practices across all programs that offer post-secondary credit, complies with the new Minnesota state law and helps ensure fairness and consistency for all students taking classes for college credit. Whom Does it Impact?: This will not affect current 11th and 12th graders. Current 9th and 10th graders, and all new students entering SAVHS will be subject to the new non-weighted grading system. What it Means for College: Colleges and universities use their own internal processes to evaluate GPAs and academic performance during admissions and they’re made aware of which school districts do and don’t offer weighted grades. Post-secondary institutions do view high school transcripts; enrolling in and showcasing achievement in more advanced courses such as AP, CIS, PSEO, and 916 is often a positive factor in admission evaluations. This decision was made to ensure equitable opportunities for all students and to reflect the latest guidance from educational and post-secondary institutions. If you have questions or concerns about this resolution, we encourage you to reach out to SAVHS administrators. Thank you for being a part of our community and helping us build success for all our students. District Highlights The Future of Basketball: 3D Printing SAMS 8th Grader, Levi Merrick, 3D printed a basketball at home and brought it to the Lifetime Fitness class to try it out! Look out NBA and WNBA, your next operations engineer is already doing the work! They showed plenty of growth engaging willingly with their team by combining their ideas to collaboratively build a 3-D model of the park! Brighter Bulletin: October 23, 2024
The Brighter Bulletin St. Anthony New Brighton Family Newsletter October 23, 2024 Hello SANB Families! Welcome back to the Brighter Bulletin where you’ll get all the important updates and reminders you need to have a successful school year. Staying Connected & Staying Safe Minnesota school districts are working to implement new cellphone policies by March 15, 2025. This has sparked important conversations about the role of cellphones in our schools, especially in the event of a critical incident. To address these concerns, SANB Schools has adopted Standard Response Protocols (SRP) which provides clear and consistent actions for staff and students to follow during any incident, from a minor spill to a major emergency. We understand the desire to be in contact with your children during emergencies. However, it's crucial to understand that using cellphones during a crisis can actually hinder emergency response efforts. Overloaded networks can prevent first responders from communicating effectively, and inaccurate information shared on social media can create further chaos and confusion. In the event of an emergency, the school district will communicate updates and information directly to parents/guardians through email, text, and the district Facebook page. Standard Response Protocols (SRP) What is SRP? SRP is a comprehensive and concise set of protocols designed to ensure everyone's safety with a coordinated response. How does it work? Staff and students are trained on SRP and participate in practice drills five times a year. Clear SRP posters are displayed in every classroom as reminders. Why SRP? SRP helps us respond effectively to any situation, ensuring a coordinated effort between our schools and, if needed, the St. Anthony Fire and Police Departments. Working Together for Safety While SRP addresses emergency situations, our school board is also developing a cellphone policy to cover everyday use. Each building has built processes that aim to minimize distractions in the classroom while providing clear guidelines for appropriate cellphone use. We appreciate your cooperation in understanding the importance of limiting cellphone use during critical incidents. We believe that SRP provides the most effective way to respond to emergencies. Please feel free to contact your child's school with any questions or concerns you may have about the new cellphone policy or SRP. You can also learn more by visiting the district website. SANB School Board Chair Letter to Star Tribune Editor Related to the SRP information above, School Board Chair, Ben Phillip, wrote a letter to the Star Tribune editor on October 13 in response to an article on cellphone bans in schools. You can read this letter and the article below: “I appreciate Myron Medcalf’s thoughtful Oct. 6 column regarding cellphone usage in school as Minnesota school districts grapple with implementing a policy by March 15, 2025 (“It’s time to revisit cellphones in school”). Metcalf says he is not convinced of an outright cellphone ban as he “feels more comfortable knowing that in a world of mass shootings and other emergencies in our schools, I can communicate with my girls when necessary.” As a father of three school-aged children, I can empathize with him, as I would want to know that my child is safe during an emergency. However, connecting with my child during an event or vice versa could do more harm than good. Last year, the St. Anthony-New Brighton School District implemented emergency protocols known as Standard Response Protocols (SRP), an initiative that the school board fully endorsed. In the SRP training, staff learned that communicating on cellphones during emergencies uses considerable Wi-Fi and cellphone data that will overwhelm and disable the network that is critical for police, fire and EMS services to use within that location. Using cellphones during these times also invites students and others to potentially post incorrect information on social media. When we govern our school districts, school boards need to approve cellphone policies that should cover everyday needs. The district administrators should also implement SRPs for those unfortunate “what if” events that could offer solutions for families wanting to communicate with students. However, for the safety of everyone, we should not conflate the two.” Ben Phillip, St. Anthony Village School Board Brief: Key Takeaways Effective Instruction Dr. Tamika Fuller, the Director of Effective Instruction (EI), presented to the board on goals, metrics, accomplishments, and professional development support for licensed staff regarding EI processes at SANB. School Board 2025 Legislative Platform Graphic The SANB Communications Team presented a draft design of the board’s legislative platform that will be presented to Minnesota state legislators next year. The final approved version of the platform will be shown to families as well. Information about school board meeting dates, agendas, and recordings can be found on the district website here.
