GWRSD Newsletter - January 29, 2026
GWRSD Superintendent Message & District Updates January 29, 2026 In this issue: Superintendent Message / Carpenter Renovation / Commitment to Student Safety - ICE / NHED Resources for Educators and Students / Upcoming Events Superintendent Message Community in Action Dear GWRSD Community, One of the greatest strengths of our district is our community. When we come together—listening, supporting one another, and engaging in the public process—we create the best possible environment for our students and their education. Simply put, we are better together. Our schools thrive when families, staff, and community members are informed and involved. The budget and annual meeting process is an important opportunity to engage in open dialogue, ask questions, and ensure our shared priorities reflect what matters most: supporting students while being responsible stewards of public resources. I encourage you to participate in the upcoming public meetings. The GWRSD Deliberative Session will take place on Saturday, January 31 at 10:00 a.m. at the Kingswood Arts Center. All materials related to this process, including the warrant, can be found at GWRSD.sau49nh.gov > School Board > Annual Meeting. For the Middleton community, the State of the Schools will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Deliberative Session at 10:00 a.m. on February 7 at Middleton Elementary School. To help make this process more accessible, two GWRSD School Board members and I also recorded a short "Budget Process Podcast" walking through the budget and key considerations. I encourage you to take a few minutes to watch and learn more on the WCTV YouTube Channel. Thank you for the many ways you show up for our schools—by staying informed, asking thoughtful questions, and supporting one another. As a community, we may not always agree on every detail, but our shared commitment to students unites us. “Strong schools are built by strong communities—working together, listening to one another, and keeping students at the center of every decision.” With gratitude for your continued partnership and support, Caroline Arakelian, PhD Superintendent District Updates: Carpenter School Renovation Since October, the Carpenter School project has moved steadily forward through Phase 1, with a strong focus on safety, structural integrity, and preserving the building’s historic character. Early work included exploratory construction to confirm existing conditions and budget assumptions, as well as the development of a life safety operations plan in coordination with the Wolfeboro Fire Department. Classrooms were cleared, temporary safety barriers were installed, and demolition progressed throughout the fall. This included the full clearing of Room 214 and the removal of approximately 60 percent of the first-floor ceilings. By November and December, structural strapping for Phase 1 was nearing completion, ceiling grid installation had begun, and additional areas of sagging were identified. These areas will be addressed as part of Phase 2. Importantly, despite these findings, the project has remained on budget, supported by savings from permit fees and insurance reimbursements. Additional work during this phase included historically appropriate coffered ceiling strapping in stairwells and vestibules, sprinkler adjustments for new drop ceilings, delivery of Phase 1 ceiling tiles, and the start of lighting installation. As of January, the project entered the final stages of Phase 1. Bauen has indicated that Phase 1 is expected to be complete by March 1. Funding for this phase has come from the Maintenance Capital Reserve Fund and property and liability insurance proceeds. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin this summer, with funding included in the proposed FY27 budget and construction anticipated to start in July. This phased approach allows the district to maintain safe operations during the school year while continuing to make meaningful progress on this important facilities project. All Carpenter School project updates can be found on the Carpenter School website: https://carpenterschool.sau49nh.gov/ Renewing Commitment to Student Safety One year ago, Governor Wentworth Regional School District shared information with families outlining our commitment to ensuring that every student feels safe, welcome, and supported in our schools. We are renewing that commitment today in response to questions and concerns raised by families and community members who have asked for clarity and reassurance. At GWRSD, student safety and well-being remain our highest priorities. We want to be clear that, to date, there have been no sightings of immigration enforcement officials or ICE at our schools or bus stops. At the same time, we believe it is important to remain prepared and transparent. Guidance has been reviewed with school leaders and staff so that everyone understands the procedures in place should a situation arise. GWRSD does not ask families about immigration status, nor do we share student records with ICE unless required by a court order or with parental or guardian consent in very limited circumstances. Immigration enforcement officials are not permitted access to our schools without a criminal judicial warrant signed by a federal judge. We do not admit agents based on administrative warrants, ICE detainers, or documents related to civil immigration enforcement. We also remind families that students are released only to individuals authorized in writing by parents or guardians. To help us continue to ensure student safety, we encourage families to review and update emergency contact information with their child’s school as needed. We understand that uncertainty can be stressful, and we want our families to know that GWRSD stands with you. Our schools are places of learning, care, and belonging for every child. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s school principal. We are here to support you and your family. New Hampshire Education Department (NHED) New Updates for Students & Families: NHED's Tutor.com partnership has expanded to include 70+ new Career and Technical Education subjects, providing students with 24/7 access to live academic and career-aligned support. New offerings span Business, Computer Technology, Engineering, Health Sciences, Human Services, Hospitality, Visual Arts, and more. These additions aim to strengthen students’ preparation for high-demand careers and further support the great work happening in CTE programs statewide. NHED, in partnership with the Parent Information Center and Bridging the Gap in the 603 Pathways to Literacy Proficiency initiative, recently launched new family literacy resources to strengthen family-school partnerships and support reading development. Please visit https://picnh.org/familyliteracymodules/ to explore the new literacy modules. This U.S. Department of Education announced the launch of the Presidential 1776 Award, a nationwide competition recognizing exceptional student knowledge of the American founding. High school students are invited to compete in three rounds of multiple-choice and verbal examinations. Three winners will receive scholarships totaling $250,000, with the national finals to be held in Washington, D.C. in June. America’s Field Trip 2025-2026 contest is now open, designed to engage students nationwide to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. This contest invites students in grades 3-12 to share their perspectives on what America means to them – and earn the opportunity to travel for field trip experiences at some of the nation’s most iconic historic and cultural landmarks. GWRSD 2026-2027 Calendar - Final
Dear GWRSD Staff and Families, We are pleased to share that the School Board has officially approved the 2026–2027 school calendar . This decision reflects the results of our recent poll, which showed a strong preference among employees and parents/guardians for a start date prior to Labor Day . As a result, the first day of school for the 2026–2027 school year will be Tuesday, September 1, 2026 . The full calendar is now available on our website. You can view it here: GWRSD Calendars Thank you to everyone who participated in the poll—your input continues to guide our planning and decision-making. The Middleton School Board will vote on the 2026-2027 calendar at their meeting Wednesday, 12/10/25. Warm regards, Caroline Arakelian, PhD Superintendent

GWRSD Newsletter - November 25, 2025
GWRSD Superintendent Message & District Updates November 25, 2025 In this issue: Superintendent Message / Budget Process / Carpenter Update / 2026-2027 School Calendars / NHED Resources for Educators and Students Superintendent Message Notes on Gratitude Dear Families, As we reflect on this past month, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your involvement and support at our Thanksgiving events and during parent-teacher conferences. Your presence, participation, and partnership make all the difference. Your engagement is truly what makes our schools successful. As we look ahead to the holiday season, a time when we express gratitude and celebrate community, please know how grateful we are for you, for our school community, and for your children. Thank you for all you do to support our schools and work alongside us in service of students. I also want to acknowledge your patience and support as we moved through the recent cybersecurity incident. We are relieved to share that no data was breached, though attempts were certainly made. Our dedicated technology staff acted quickly and effectively to thwart those attempts, and we will continue to put additional safeguards in place to strengthen our systems moving forward. We deeply appreciate your understanding as we work to maintain a safe and secure digital environment. As you share moments of gratitude with your families this season, here are some student-focused gratitude practices that can help build appreciation and kindness at home and at school: Keep a simple gratitude journal and write down one thing each day that made you smile — a helpful friend, a fun activity, or something you accomplished. Say a meaningful “thank you” each week to someone who helps make school run smoothly — such as a bus driver, custodian, cafeteria worker, or classmate. Choose one small act of kindness each day, like holding a door for someone, helping pick up materials, or inviting a peer to join in a game or activity. Share a gratitude moment at home, perhaps during dinner or bedtime, by talking about the best part of your day or someone you appreciated. Write a short note or draw a picture for a teacher or staff member who has supported or encouraged you — a small gesture can truly brighten someone’s day. Notice the “unseen helpers” around the school and find one way to thank at least one of them this month. As we turn toward what will be a busy and joy-filled month of December, we look forward to seeing you at our holiday concerts and celebrations. These events give our students another wonderful opportunity to show what they love and share their talents with our community. With gratitude, With gratitude, Caroline Arakelian, PhD Superintendent GWRSD Budget Process Thank you for your continued support as we move through this year’s budget process. Our school and district administrators have worked closely together to develop responsible, thoughtful proposals that continue to prioritize what matters most: providing all students with an excellent education. Last week, the Finance Committee heard presentations from principals and district leaders on nine individual school budgets, as well as the district-level SAU, School Board, Business, Technology, Special Education, and Curriculum budgets. These proposals were met with strong support and have now advanced to the full School Board for the next stage of review. Key upcoming steps in the budget process: Preliminary Budget Hearing: December 8 at New Durham School, 7:00 p.m. Final Budget Hearing for Adoption: January 5 at the KRHS Lecture Hall Deliberative Session: Saturday, January 31 at 10:00 a.m., Kingswood Arts Center We recognize that our community has experienced some challenging financial moments, from last spring’s budget freeze to operating under a default budget this year. Your partnership, patience, and advocacy continue to be invaluable as we work together to support our students and staff. District Updates: Carpenter School Project Update November 2025 Update Bauen Corporation We want to share an update on the ongoing ceiling stabilization work at Carpenter School. The project continues to progress on schedule, and we appreciate the community’s patience as these important safety improvements take place. Current Work in Progress Structural supports for the existing lath-and-plaster ceilings are nearing completion in the Phase 1 areas. The only Phase 2 spaces still requiring modifications are the Multipurpose Room, both student restrooms, and Room 231, where adjustments to the original construction details are needed. Ceiling grid installation has been completed in all Phase 1 rooms that do not require moisture- or mold-resistant drywall. In addition, Bauen is working closely with our maintenance staff to complete touch-up patching and painting while rooms are temporarily out of use. As part of this work, they are also sealing holes and gaps in order to further improve air quality and safety. Looking Ahead Beginning next week, moisture-resistant drywall will be installed in the room where the ceiling collapse occurred (Room 214) as well as in other areas where the original lath-and-plaster ceiling had to be removed. During this process, all gaps will be fully sealed to help prevent smoke from traveling between spaces in an emergency. Once the drywall work is complete, ceiling grid installation will continue in those rooms. Electrical rough-in work for lighting will also move forward. During inspections, additional areas were identified with significant sagging in their original ceilings. These ceilings will need to be replaced with new drywall, consistent with the work already completed under the insurance-covered portion of the project, and this will be included in the planned Phase 2 work. Budget Status The project remains on budget, with both labor and material costs tracking as expected. Although demolition revealed some minor additional needs, all associated expenses fall well within the budgeted allowances and the savings currently built into the project. In fact, savings from the building permit fee and builder’s risk insurance have increased the available contingency, keeping the project in a strong and stable financial position. 2026-2027 School Calendars Originally planned for the November meetings, the Governor Wentworth Regional School District (GWRSD) School Board will vote on the 2026–2027 school calendar at its meeting on December 8th, 2025, and the Middleton School Board will vote on its calendar at its meeting on December 10, 2025. Once approved, each calendar will be posted on the respective district websites shortly after those meetings for families to view and download. More information to follow. Thank you for your patience. New Hampshire Education Department (NHED) New Updates for Students: Governor Kelly Ayotte is inviting New Hampshire elementary school students to help decorate the Governor’s office for the holiday season with a coloring page of the State House. Elementary schools are encouraged to submit their coloring pages, which will be displayed at the last Governor and Council meeting of the year on Dec. 17. The coloring page may be downloaded here and sent to: Governor’s Office – New Hampshire State House, 107 N. Main St. #208, Concord, NH 03301. NH Civics announced this week that fifth-grader Liv Crete-Sayer of Boscawen Elementary School has been elected by her peers across the state as NH’s 2026 Kid Governor. She ran on a platform about the dangers of smoking, vaping, and drug use. Congratulations to Liv.
