Port Spotlight Summer 2026     Superintendent's Message Dear Port Washington Families, As another school year comes to a close, I want to thank you for making my first year in Port Washington so memorable. When I arrived last summer, I knew this community had a well-earned reputation for excellence. What I could not fully appreciate until I became part of it was the extraordinary warmth, kindness, and partnership of the families who make this district such a special place. This spring, we celebrated important milestones together. Our fifth and eighth grade moving up ceremonies recognized students as they reached new stages in their educational journey, while Schreiber High School's graduation celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 as they begin an exciting new chapter. These moments were a fitting culmination of a year filled with growth, achievement, and discovery. Throughout the year, our students challenged themselves academically, expressed their talents through the arts, competed with pride in athletics, served others through community activities, and continued to grow into thoughtful, capable young people. None of these accomplishments would be possible without our exceptional faculty and staff, who bring extraordinary dedication, care, and expertise to our schools each day. I am deeply grateful for all they do to support our students and families. I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to the colleagues who are retiring this year. Their years of service have helped shape the Port Washington School District, and we thank them for the lasting difference they have made in the lives of so many children. Finally, thank you to our families for the trust you place in us each day. Educating children is a partnership, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you in support of your children and our schools. I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful, restful, and safe summer. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in September as we continue building on the many successes of this past year. Superintendent of Schools   Congratulations Class of 2026 Valedictorian and Salutatorian Class of 2026 Valedictorian Tori Kaufman, the Class of 2026 valedictorian, has shown a deep commitment to scientific inquiry, creative expression, and community leadership. She served as President of the Tree Huggers Club, Treasurer of the Debate Team, and was a student at the University of Pennsylvania Neuroscience Summer Research Academy. Her dedication to service and writing earned her top honors, including being named a National Merit Finalist, receiving a Gold Key and two Honorable Mentions at the Scholastic Writing Awards, and being recognized as a featured volunteer for the ALS Association, alongside her work as a veterinary assistant for Veterinarian on Wheels. She will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, where she plans to major in Neuroscience. Class of 2026 Salutatorian Theo Grigorenko, the Class of 2026 salutatorian, is equally accomplished, particularly in engineering, scientific research, and student leadership. He served as the Science Olympiad Team Captain, President of Athletes, and dedicated his time to Key Club volunteering. Theo’s passion for innovation and hands-on science is highlighted by his extensive environmental research alongside a CUNY professor, a personal robotics project, and independent iOS app development, complemented by an internship at a local dental office. He will attend Stony Brook University in the fall, where he plans to major in Engineering.   Class of 2026 Highlights & Awards   In addition to celebrating our graduating high school seniors, we also recognized our eighth-grade students during the Carrie P. Weber Middle School moving-up ceremony in June. Congratulations to the eighth-grade class, and best of luck as they transition to Schreiber High School this fall!   To wrap up the school year, our elementary schools came together to celebrate our fifth graders. Throughout June, families, teachers, and friends attended moving-up ceremonies across the district to mark the occasion. These students are ready for the next chapter at Weber Middle School, and we couldn't be prouder of their hard work. Superintendent's Message: Tuesday, February 24- Remo...

Dear Port Washington Families, I hope you and your families are faring well in today’s storm and are staying safe and warm. Due to the magnitude of the storm and the anticipated impact on road conditions, schools will be closed again tomorrow, Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Tuesday will be a Remote Instruction Day. We will follow our two-hour delay remote schedule, meaning the instructional day will begin two hours later than usual and conclude at the regular dismissal time. Students should log into Google Classroom to access Google Meet links and instructional materials. Teachers will use a combination of live instruction and independent work, and attendance will be taken at the start of each instructional period. Elementary specials, AIS, ENL, and related services will meet virtually according to their regular schedules. Building-specific details will be shared by your child’s principal. Because we are coming off February recess, our Pre-K through Grade 2 students did not bring their school-issued iPads home. We understand that some students may not have access to a device. Families should do the best they can under the circumstances and communicate directly with their child’s teacher if technology access presents a challenge. Our staff will work with you to provide flexibility and support. All after-school and evening activities are canceled. UPDATE: Monday, Feb 23 – Traditional Snow Day (No Re...

Dear Port Washington Families,   We have just received updated guidance from the New York State Education Department. As a result, Monday, February 23, will now be a traditional snow day. There will be no remote instruction.   Earlier today, the Commissioner of Education announced that districts required to close due to this storm may receive a waiver from the 180-day instructional requirement for February 23. The State recognized that most districts have been on February recess and were therefore not in a position to prepare for remote instruction.   With this flexibility in place, we are able to provide students and staff with a true snow day on Monday.   At this time, the State has not indicated that the same flexibility would apply if additional closures are necessary later in the week. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will communicate promptly if any further adjustments are required.   All school buildings will be closed, and all after-school and evening activities are canceled tomorrow.    Thank you for your patience and partnership as we navigate the winter weather together. Dear Parents and Guardians,   Due to the inclement weather and anticipated road conditions, all schools in the District will be closed Monday, January 26. As previously shared in our winter weather plan, this first snow day of the year will be a traditional closure with no remote learning.  All after-school activities and programs are also canceled for Monday. In addition, transportation to all private, parochial, BOCES and special needs schools are cancelled for the day.   We hope our students and staff enjoy the traditional snow day and stay safe and warm. Superintendent's Message- Monitoring the Winter Storm

Superintendent's Message January 22, 2026   Dear Port Washington School Community, Weather forecasts are indicating the possibility of a significant winter storm beginning Sunday and extending into Monday, with the potential for substantial snowfall. To help families plan ahead, I want to outline the scenarios we are currently monitoring. School Closure:  The first snow day of the year will remain a traditional closure with no remote learning. A school closure would occur if snowfall is heavy and road conditions are unsafe for travel. We will make a decision regarding a closure no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday. If a closure appears likely, we will communicate that decision earlier. Delayed Opening (In Person):  A delayed opening would occur if roads are passable but require additional time for clearing. The delayed opening schedule is available on the District’s  Inclement Weather page of the website. While it is unlikely, if winter weather conditions persist into Tuesday, we may need to consider either a delayed opening for in-person instruction or a delayed remote instructional day.  Remote days allow us to preserve the school year calendar as planned in order to meet the required minimum number of instructional days. Remote instruction follows the same delayed opening schedule as in-person learning and can be found on our  website . Please ensure your child brings home any necessary devices or materials, just in case we need to pivot to remote instruction. We will continue to monitor the forecast closely throughout the weekend and will communicate as soon as a final decision can be made. Any updates will be shared via ParentSquare and posted on the District website. If you do not receive a communication, schools will operate on a regular schedule. We Need Your Opinions!

Dear Port Washington School District Community, Over the past four years, we have administered a School Climate survey to our students, staff and parents. The results of these surveys have provided us with important information about different aspects of our district, helping us to inform programing and initiatives.  We are now prepared for the fifth administration of these surveys. Once again, we ask for your full participation in this important initiative. The survey window will be open from  Wednesday, January 7th through Wednesday, January 21, 2026 . The surveys should take between 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Although the surveys will be sent via email or accessed through student identification numbers, all responses are anonymous. Given the digital format of the surveys, they can be translated into your home language, if necessary. The surveys are available only in a digital format, and they must be completed in one sitting.  Staff Survey Staff members will receive an email from  notifications@thoughtexchange.com  with a link to the survey. The link in the email will direct staff to the anonymous survey.  Parent Survey Parents will receive an email from  notifications@thoughtexchange.com  with a unique link to the survey. Only the primary contact will receive the email. Parents who do not receive a survey can contact Karen Whitely ( kwhitely@portnet.org ) for a link to the survey and their access code.   Student Survey Students in grades 4-12 will complete their surveys in class during the two-week administration period. We estimate surveys will take twenty minutes to complete. Inclement Weather Plan

Superintendent's Message December 8, 2025   Dear Parents and Guardians,   As we prepare for the winter, we would like to share our District’s inclement weather plan. If the District exhausts all allotted inclement weather days, we will transition to remote instruction for any additional weather-related closures. The first snow day of the year will remain a traditional closure with no remote learning.  No after-school activities will occur on days when schools are closed.  The decision to cancel school will be made no later than 6:00 a.m., at which point families will be notified via ParentSquare.  Any subsequent inclement weather days will be designated as Remote Instruction Days as long as the area isn’t experiencing a loss of power.  Remote days allow us to preserve the school year calendar as planned in order to meet the minimum number of instructional days required; however, the calendar is always subject to change in case of emergency.   Schedules for Remote Instruction Days:   For non-consecutive closure days, a two-hour delay schedule will be followed on the first day.    School Two-Hour Delay Start Time Pre-Kindergarten 10:45 AM Daly 10:10 AM Guggenheim 10:20 AM Manorhaven 10:20 AM Sousa 10:45 AM South Salem 10:45 AM Weber 10:10 AM Schreiber 10:05 AM   If closures are consecutive, only the first day will follow a two-hour delay schedule; subsequent days will follow a regular school day schedule.   Structure of Day:   Teachers may use a combination of synchronous (live instruction) and asynchronous (independent work) on remote instruction days.  If assigning asynchronous work, teachers will check in with students at the start of the instructional period to take attendance, give instruction and be available at the end of the instructional period to answer questions.  All Google Meet links and check-in times will be posted to the teacher’s google classroom page.   For elementary students, teachers may share their Google Meet links with parents via ParentSquare.  Elementary specials, AIS, ENL, and other services, will meet with students virtually following their regular schedule.    Building specific information will come from your child’s principal.  If you have any questions about the remote instruction plan, please contact your building principal.   Thank you for your ongoing support of our students and staff.   Sincerely, Gaurav Passi, Ed.D. Port Spotlight Fall Update | November 2025 A Message from the Superintendent Dear Port Washington Community, As Thanksgiving approaches, I find myself thinking about the moments that quietly shape a child’s life. Sometime this year, a child in Port Washington will read a sentence for the first time and feel the world open. In another room, a student who once whispered will raise a hand with confidence. Somewhere in our district, a young person will discover that effort creates talent, that challenges reveal strength, and that kindness can change the course of a day. These moments may seem small on the surface, but to the students who live them, they mean everything. They unfold softly, in classrooms and hallways and cafeterias and on playgrounds and athletic fields, carried by the steady guidance of adults who care deeply about our children. Over the past several weeks, I have met with faculty and staff in every building, held community conversations, and listened to hundreds of voices through our ThoughtExchange. Through all of these interactions, one truth emerged clearly. Port Washington is a community that treasures its children and believes deeply in the power of their potential. Families are proud of our schools, grateful for the educators who guide their children, and eager to work together to ensure that every student experiences meaningful learning, strong relationships, and a sense of belonging. Several themes rose again and again. Families want excellence that is consistent and enduring. They want their children to feel known and supported. They want clear communication and a deeper understanding of the reasons behind our decisions. And they want school buildings that remain safe, modern, and ready for the future. I am grateful for the candor, honesty, and care with which these ideas were shared. They affirm that our district’s priorities are focused on the right work and that our path forward is a shared one. The insights you have offered will continue to guide our work in the months ahead, as we turn aspirations into action and action into progress for all students. As we enter this season of gratitude, I want to thank you for your trust and for the privilege of serving this remarkable community. Superintendent of Schools District Goals & Priority Areas   Reflecting Our Priorities Culture of Care, Belonging, and Well-Being PWSD Comes Together for Unity Day 2025 On Wednesday, October 22nd, students and staff across our district came together to celebrate Unity Day, a national initiative that promotes kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Students and staff across all schools wore orange to show their shared commitment to creating a culture of compassion and belonging. Throughout the district, classrooms and hallways were filled with orange-themed activities and lessons focused on empathy, respect, and standing up against bullying.   Sousa Elementary Selected as a 2025-2026 RULER Spotlight School Port Washington School District is proud to announce that Sousa Elementary School has been selected by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence as a 2025-2026 RULER Spotlight School for the third consecutive year.   Read the full story here   Schreiber High School's Wellness Day Wellness Day at Schreiber High School was a great success, marking the school’s fourth celebration of health, mindfulness, and community. The day gave students and staff a chance to pause regular classes and focus on activities that support mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Students played a central role, planning and leading sessions that encouraged their peers to relax and recharge. Yoga, meditation, art therapy, team-building, and outdoor activities offered something for everyone. Teachers and staff joined in, enjoying the slower pace and the positive, connected atmosphere throughout the building. Now in its fourth year, Wellness Day has become an important part of Schreiber’s culture, reinforcing the value of self-care, balance, and community well-being.   Nassau County Special Olympics Summit at Jericho High School Last week, Schreiber’s Letter Club and Challenger team spent the day at the Nassau County Special Olympics Summit at Jericho High School, learning new ways to build a more inclusive school community.   Academic and Personal Excellence Celebrating Our First Quarter Weber Stars Twenty-six students and three staff members were recognized as Weber Stars for the first quarter of the 2025-2026 school year! This honor celebrates those who go above and beyond to make Weber a stronger, more inclusive community; demonstrating integrity, teamwork, growth, and care for others every day. Congratulations, Weber Stars!   Schreiber Student's Work Featured in Grand Central Art Exhibit Port Washington School District is proud to share that Schreiber High School junior and AP Photography student Damien Chao has been selected to exhibit his work in "Dear New York," a massive public art installation on display throughout Grand Central Station. The exhibition, created by Brandon Stanton, the acclaimed photographer behind Humans of New York, has completely transformed the historic terminal, replacing all advertisements and maps with stunning photographic and written works that celebrate the people and stories of New York City. Damien's inclusion in this citywide exhibition is a significant honor and reflects his artistic talent and dedication. Kevin Scully, Director of Creative Arts, said, “Damien's work being part of this exhibit is a tremendous accomplishment. He is a talented student, and his teacher Ms. Elizabeth Zucker has done an outstanding job mentoring him and guiding his growth as a photographer."   The Art Guild's Nassau County Juried Art Competition and Exhibition Seven Schreiber High School students were selected to participate in The Art Guild's Nassau County Juried Art Competition and Exhibition at The Art Guild in the Elderfields Preserve at 200 Port Washington Boulevard, Manhasset, NY.  The selected students include Joelle Bedard, Liza Chan, Eliza Elbaum, Vivian Muller, Harper Rejwan, Annabel Roth, and Elle Tannenbaum. The work will be up from November 2nd through the 29th.  Congratulations to all the selected students and their art teachers, Ms. Miranda Best and Ms. Nicole Thomas!   Weber Boys Soccer Teams Go Undefeated for the First Time in Fifteen Years Congratulations to the Weber Boys 7th & 8th Grade Boys Soccer Teams for both completing undefeated seasons for the first time in fifteen years! What an incredible achievement for these student-athletes and Coaches Miglietta and Braddish.   Nassau County Finalists Congratulations to our Girls Field Hockey, Girls Tennis, Boys Cross Country and Port Washington/ Roslyn Swimming and Diving teams on finishing as Nassau County Finalists! We’re so proud of your hard work, teamwork, and Viking spirit!   Nassau County Champions Congratulations to Evie Loewy and Brianna Lewis on winning the Nassau County Doubles Championship! Congratulations to Mae Strasser, Mila Fischer, Kamila Ko, and Carina Dai (Roslyn) for winning the 200m Freestyle Relay Nassau County Championship!   Partnerships that Empower Senior Experience Internship & Networking Fair Twenty-two local businesses and organizations visited Schreiber High School to meet with twelfth graders seeking Senior Experience placements. Students connected with professionals offering internships in education, the arts, technology, non-profit work, wellness, finance, interior design, engineering, sales, marketing, journalism, and community service.   K-12 Parent University In late October, parents from across the district came together for Parent University 2025, an evening of learning, connection, and practical parenting tools. Workshops covered a wide range of topics; from supporting children with ADHD and fostering independence, to promoting growth mindsets, managing anxiety, and building healthy technology habits. Offered in both English and Spanish, each session equipped families with strategies to help their children thrive at every stage, from elementary through high school.   A Living Legacy: Greenhouses Dedicated to Schreiber Alumni On October 20th, students, faculty, alumni, and community members gathered at Paul D. Schreiber High School to celebrate the official dedication of the Schreiber Greenhouses, two new learning spaces now formally dedicated in honor of Schreiber graduates Mark Harris Bernstein (Class of 1972) and Julian H. Bernstein (Class of 1975). Made possible by a generous grant from The Ed. Foundation and inspired by the Bernsteins' sister, Ellen Fox, the greenhouses will enable hands-on studies in environmental science, plant biology, and sustainability. Dr. Feeney, Ms. Diaz and Dr. Borsella have created a Question and Answer document which can be found here.   Celebrating Our Success Expanding Access and Opportunity The Board of Education recently heard a presentation on Secondary Data. You can view the presentation here. Featured items include: Rising Participation, Rising Goals: At Weber, an increasing number of students embrace accelerated courses; school adopts goal to expand opportunities for more students. Schreiber Students Reach New Heights: Advanced Designation Regents Diploma rate of 78% sets a new district high. A New Peak in AP Participation: 1,951 AP exams written as more students embrace challenging courses in High School.   Strong Foundation in the Early Years In October, the Board of Education heard a presentation on Elementary Data. A copy of the presentation can be found here. Highlights include: District adopts K-2 phonics program at each elementary school. Early i-Ready Math data shows promising gains. Work towards adopting a K-5 reading program across all elementary schools continues to progress. Picture Perfect All elementary schools are now using a K–2 evidence-based program in phonics and phonemic awareness. This has brought consistency within each building and ensures that the early pillars of reading are taught with greater alignment and clarity. First grade students in Ms. Unger's class at Salem in a phonemic awareness lesson. Second graders in Ms. Nell's class at Manorhaven reading books in their literacy centers. Kindergarteners in Mrs. Greenberg's class at Sousa working on their drill sounds. Mrs. Hoffman's class at Daly has a student lead the class in a drill sounds warm-up. Second graders in a phonics lesson in Mrs. Lelekidis' class at Guggenheim.   Stay Informed Northwell Health Partnership Port Washington School District has partnered with the Northwell Behavioral Health Center, which provides timely access to mental health services for children and adolescents (ages 5-18) who need urgent mental health support. The dedicated center is designed as an alternative treatment setting for those who need urgent or same-day intervention, but do not necessarily require the services of the emergency room. The center is available for the students of Port Washington and partnering districts. A Message from Dr. Passi

Superintendent's Message October 9, 2025 Dear Port Washington Families, Faculty, and Community Members, On Tuesday night, I had the privilege of presenting our District Goals and Action Plan to the Board of Education. From my first day as Superintendent, my priority has been to listen, learn, and understand the excellent work already happening across our schools. Port Washington is a district with incredible strengths, and our focus now is to build on that foundation and continue moving forward together. At the heart of our work is a collective commitment to academic and personal excellence.  We are committed to ensuring that each student is engaged, challenged, and supported, and each educator has the trust, tools, and professional learning needed to make that possible. Our District Goals and Action Plan are grounded in our Portrait of a Graduate and aligned with the Board of Education’s four overarching goals: Striving for Excellence Positive School Culture and Climate Communication, Engagement, and Partnership with Families and Stakeholders Facilites and Operations Together, the Portrait of a Graduate and the Board’s goals provide both the vision and framework that guide our work. They describe the type of students we seek to develop, the school environments we aspire to create, and the partnerships we strive to strengthen across our community. To support these aims, we have identified five Priority Areas that serve as the foundation of our efforts: Academic and Personal Excellence – Engaging students in rigorous, future-focused learning while fostering creativity, resilience, and social-emotional growth. Professional Learning for Faculty and Staff – Providing high-quality professional learning that empowers educators to grow, innovate, and excel in service to students. Culture of Care, Belonging, and Well-Being – Nurturing safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where every student and staff member feels valued and connected. Partnerships that Empower – Strengthening collaboration with families through clear communication, shared responsibility, and meaningful engagement. Efficient Operations and Future-Ready Facilities – Ensuring our schools remain safe, modern, and adaptable to meet the evolving needs of students and our community. While each of these priorities is vital, the thread that connects them all is our core purpose:  advancing student learning.  Every decision from professional development to facilities planning ultimately exists to support strong teaching and deeper learning. In this first year, our focus is on establishing baselines and building systems that will allow us to measure progress meaningfully. This framework will help us set clear, ambitious, and realistic targets in the years ahead.  We will continue to share updates on our progress throughout the year and invite all members of our school community to stay engaged in this important work.
