  • Welcome to the 2026-2027 School Year!

Dear Washington Union School District Families, Welcome to the 2026–27 school year! I hope you have enjoyed a restful summer and are looking forward to the year ahead. Our staff has been working diligently to prepare our schools, and we are excited to welcome students back on Wednesday, August 5. School offices reopened on Monday, July 27. Class lists will be posted at each school on Monday, August 3. Families are also invited to visit classrooms on Tuesday, August 4, at the following times: Toro Park School: 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. Washington Union School: 2:30 - 3:00 p.m. A number of projects have been underway throughout the summer to improve our campuses and prepare them for students and staff. The construction of the outdoor volleyball court is nearing completion at San Benancio, and new water tanks have been installed. On August 3, the San Benancio campus and parking lots will be resurfaced. In addition, the Toro Bulls have been working to improve the athletic field at San Benancio Middle School. At Washington Union School, significant tree trimming was completed to remove overgrown branches and address potential safety hazards. Roof repair is going on at Toro Park, and it is also being thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the start of school under the leadership of our new head custodian, Jose Pimentel. We are pleased to welcome Jose to the district and appreciate the work he is doing to ensure the campus is ready for our students and staff. For those of you who have followed the Portola Drive traffic project, you will see a new gate has been installed in front of Toro Park School. The gate will replace the barriers that were up last year and will be engaged on school days from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m. As we begin this new year, we also continue the district’s transition to a community-funded model. This transition represents an important opportunity to consider the long-term vision for our schools and how we can best use our resources to serve students. We recognize that challenges remain, and we are committed to approaching them thoughtfully, responsibly, and collaboratively. In an effort to engage the community and hear from all of our stakeholders and educational partners, the district will offer a series of listening sessions throughout the upcoming school year. These sessions will provide opportunities to share ideas, identify priorities, and help shape a collective vision for the future of our district. Information and meeting dates will be announced in the coming weeks. Although this transition will require us to navigate some challenges, our central commitment remains unchanged: we will continue working together to provide high-quality instruction in a supportive, engaging environment that meets the needs of every learner. We are excited about the possibilities ahead and grateful for the continued partnership of our families, staff, and community. I look forward to seeing you very soon as we welcome this new school year with excitement, purpose, and promise. Sincerely, Gina Uccelli Superintendent
