Today they used their own bodies as models to test their knowledge of regional terms. Hispanic American Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15 Joel Senez, Humanities Director Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15 every year in the United States. President George H.W. Bush first declared the 30-day period on September 14, 1989. From entertainment to food and sports, the Hispanic and Latinx communities have left their impact on U.S. history and culture. While their contributions can be spotted throughout day-to-day life, Hispanic Heritage Month brings these accomplishments to the forefront. The EHS World Language department celebrates various culture on a continual basis and are excited for the activities planned around Hispanic American Heritage Month. The department will be highlighting significant events, individuals, and achievements each day on the morning announcement. Additional activities include “My Postal Stamp Contest”, Hallway Display and Gallery Hall, Museum Field Trip, fundraising, and local restaurant "Mi Cultura 2" will be helping us to exhibit the contest winner stamps! New Course in Social Studies! Personal Financial Management and Financial Literacy: Humanities Joel Senez, Humanities Director This course is designed to familiarize students with their role as consumers in the national and global economy. In this course, students learn how to manage their personal resources by making informed choices as consumers in the marketplace. Financial matters that students are likely to encounter during both their school years and adult lives are to be discussed. The course prepares students to make financial decisions and introduces students to the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual economic decision-makers. The course also develops students' familiarity with markets, distributions of income, and the role of government in promoting the greater efficiency and equity in the economy. Three weeks into the course students report being excited to learn about the real impact of finances on their lives and what they are looking at when they get their first paycheck! Math Curriculum Showcase Developing Critical Thinking Skills Chris Ponte, STEAM Director The Math Department is excited to continue implementing strategies from Building Thinking Classrooms. Students will be engaged in fun activities that require them to work with peers to solve problems on whiteboards around the room. Through this practice, each student will develop their critical thinking skills rather simply memorizing a set of steps that will assist them with only one type of problem. Below is a photo of Mrs. Ellis’ students working on a fun group sum and difference stations activity. New “Digital Photography 2” Course John Dague, Technology Education For the first time students can take a second level photography course at Enfield High School. Students in the Digital Photography 2 course will build on essential skills and knowledge to tell compelling visual stories. They used a variety of materials and worked together to complete these drawings. This was a part of our Fun Friday activity! Get Ready for the Pep Rally! Mark Dube, Director of the Arts Enfield High School’s annual Pep Rally is right around the corner, and this year’s event promises to be one of the best yet! On Friday, October 4th, we’ll come together as a school community to celebrate our Enfield pride during Homecoming Week. This exciting event is more than just a rally—it’s a tradition where each class will face off in a series of fun and competitive challenges, all vying for the ultimate bragging rights: the title of Class Champions! Our emcees, Mr. Rob Barnes and Mr. Jordan Swilling along with the physical education department will lead us through a day of energy, excitement, and school spirit. Get ready to cheer on your classmates, showcase your Enfield pride, and enjoy a showcase of everything that makes our school community special. One of the highlights of the day is the annual field show, directed by our talented Band Director, Mrs. Ashley Schell, and led by Drum Majors Maya McCormick and Cassidy Weston. The show is always a crowd favorite, and this year’s performance will be one to remember. The Enfield High School Music Department has always been the foundation of EHS spirit and pride while providing the soundtrack of our school experience! And don’t forget, Homecoming Week will also feature spirit-themed days, giving students the chance to show off their school spirit in fun, creative, and new ways all week long! Schedule Update Laura Gagnon, 11th Grade Assistant Principal There have been a lot of changes with our school schedule for this year. Our school counselors have been hard at work meeting with students to ensure schedules are just right. Any student that has a question about their schedule, should make an appointment with their counselor. Don’t forget that the add/drop period to make changes ends on September 17th. If students have questions about credit requirements and their progress towards graduation, our counselors are available to assist. Click on the counselors QR Code to schedule an appointment. Attention 12th Grade: Senior Plans Dave White, School Counseling Coordinator Now that we are into the middle of September, scheduling changes are wrapping up and counselors are gearing up to transition into assisting seniors with post-secondary plans. Later this month, counselors will be sending home graduation status letters to note credits and/or performance standards (literacy, numeracy, and science) that seniors still need to complete in order to graduate. Separately, counselors will also begin meeting with seniors individually to review plans and assist with the steps required for applying to colleges. Depending on the college and type of application method (i.e. early decision, early action, regular admissions, and rolling admissions), common fall application deadlines can be November 1st, December 1st, and January 1st. Seniors who intend to apply to 4-year colleges, should schedule appointments with their counselors over the coming weeks to review application steps. If they haven’t yet, seniors should also begin creating a list of colleges they intend to apply to and should create a CommonApplication account at www.commonapp.org. For any who are interested in a virtual fall college fair, NACAC (National Association for College Admissions Counseling) is hosting a virtual college fair on Sunday, September 15th from 1:00-6:00PM EST. Grade 12 Isabella Dinnald Zachary Maynard Grade 11 Olivia Nuccio Colton Hutchings It's Fall....Time For Fitness Testing! But why? Mark Dube, Director of the Arts Students and families of EHS. You may wonder why we do the PACER, push-ups, curl-ups, and sit-and-reach tests. Are they just another task to check off your high school to-do list? Actually, these tests are designed to give you a snapshot of your overall fitness and health—something that matters long after graduation. The PACER test measures your cardiovascular endurance, helping you see how your heart and lungs perform during physical activity. Push-ups and curl-ups assess your muscular strength and endurance, which are key for daily activities like lifting or carrying things without strain. The sit-and-reach test checks your flexibility, which can prevent injuries and make movement easier. The life lesson here? Maintaining your physical health is a long-term investment. These tests give you a baseline, helping you understand your strengths and areas for improvement. As you grow older, being fit isn't just about looking good—it's about feeling good, having energy, and living a healthy, active life. So, while the tests may seem like a hassle now, they serve a bigger purpose: teaching you how to take care of your body, now and in the future. So, stay hydrated! Keep your body fueled with nutritious foods and make sure to get plenty of rest! No matter how you perform, it's a great opportunity to see your results and make a plan to get better! EHS Open House Sept. 19th 6pm-8:30pm EHS parents, guardians, and caregivers are cordially invited to Enfield High School’s annual Open House, to be held on Thursday, September 19th. You are an important partner in your child’s education, and this is a great opportunity to meet your student’s teachers and learn more about the curriculum and course expectations. Parents, guardians, and caregivers will begin with their student’s period 1a class at 6:30 p.m. and will follow their student's schedule using the provided schedule (below). For parents of 9th graders and new students, there will be an optional meet and greet with administration in the auditorium from 6:00-6:25 p.m. If any parent is unable to view their child’s schedule on PowerSchool, printed schedules and maps will be available in the main lobby starting at 6:00 p.m. Parking will be available both in front of and behind the building. We look forward to meeting our families! Parents will follow their student's schedule. Our first lesson for the 2024-25 school year, focusing on Academic Study Halls, was introduced on August 30th. Lessons are drawn from a variety of sources, including Yale's RULER program for emotional intelligence. This year, we're excited to feature an EHS student as the voice behind our mentoring lessons, adding a relatable touch for our students. The mentoring block meets monthly for 30 minutes on early release days, with students grouped by grade-level homerooms. Each group is supported by a building staff member, fostering a sense of belonging and school connectedness. EHS students create kindness posters to foster inclusion, belonging, and acceptance of all! This Month in Your EHS Library Joel Senez, Humanities Director September is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the joys and responsibilities of being a dog owner and the EHS Library has many resources on this topic. As we honor our loyal companions, it's the perfect time to reflect on what it means to be a responsible pet parent. This month let’s commit to providing our furry friends with the love, care, and attention they deserve. From regular vet visits and proper training to ensuring their safety and well-being, responsible dog ownership encompasses it all. Join us in spreading awareness, sharing tips, and embracing the role of a dedicated pet owner. Your dog relies on you, and together, we can make every day a happy and healthy one for our canine companions!
