Immigrant Support
January 27, 2025 Dear Northern Humboldt Union High School District families and staff, Nothing matters more to us than the success and safety of our students. We are committed to the education and well-being of all students no matter their immigration status, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, religion, ability, sex and gender identity, socio-economic status or beliefs. President Trump signed an executive order last week that ends the practice of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents avoiding K-12 schools, colleges, hospitals, and churches for enforcement actions. I know that this action has caused fear and a degree of uncertainty in our employees and students. Regardless of the executive order, our commitment to your students remains as strong as ever. At Northern Humboldt, we are passionate about educating our students and helping them reach their full potential. Our mission is to provide every single one of our over 1,700 students with an equal opportunity to learn and thrive in a safe and supportive environment. We also celebrate the increasingly rich diversity of our families. We recognize that some of these families, particularly those who are undocumented, may be understandably fearful or anxious about the potential impact of these recent changes to federal immigration enforcement. We want to share some of our efforts as we prepare for the potential of ICE or CBP agents visiting our schools. District staff are in communication with State and local officials, our legal team and local affinity groups. We are in the process of developing protocols in the event ICE or CBP undertake immigration enforcement actions in Humboldt County. We have been working diligently to proactively respond to the changes set forth by the federal administration. To our families, please be assured that staff site leadership is being provided with updated guidelines, and our goal remains the same – protect students and keep them in school, where they belong. Northern Humboldt will continue to follow the state law, including the California Values Act and the guidance of the California Attorney General’s office. NHUHSD will also continue to protect the privacy of student records and provide all students equal access to a high-quality education, as required by law. None of our Northern Humboldt students, or families should ever feel alone or unsupported. If you need mental health assistance in this challenging time, please reach out to your school’s site administration. Keep your emergency contact information updated at school and make sure we have backup contacts who can pick up your child if needed. Additionally, for information about student protections and immigrant rights, please refer to this guide from the California Attorney General . As we learn more we will communicate further with our school community. Sincerely, Natalie Giannini Board of Trustees President Roger Macdonald Superintendent

Working Together to Support Student Success
Dear Families, 12/3/24 We want to update you on the impact of our new attendance policy this year. The policy was developed in response to community and staff concerns about tardies and period cuts affecting both individual student achievement and our overall learning environment. Our data for the first two terms shows encouraging results: Overall district attendance increased from 92.67% to 93.81% District-wide tardies reduced by 25% (from 4,204 to 3,150) District-wide class cuts reduced by 40% (from 4,351 to 2,611) These improvements mean more learning time for our students! Research shows that missing just 10% of school (about 2 days per month) can negatively affect academic performance. Since implementation, we've heard from many families about attendance notifications, the impact on typically punctual students who occasionally run late, and concerns the policy feels too strict. We take this feedback seriously - it helps us refine our approach while maintaining high expectations for attendance. To help minimize attendance notifications: NEW! Use ParentSquare to report absences, tardies, or early dismissals in advance Call or email the attendance office early for known absences Send a written note with your student Remember to report absences within 3 days to prevent them from being marked as cuts We believe in supporting students while maintaining high expectations, understanding that occasional tardiness happens, and working together to address attendance challenges. In the next two weeks, we'll send surveys to gather your feedback on many things. At the end of the survey, there is an opportunity to tell us what is working and what isn't working. Please consider giving us feedback on the policy. Thank you for your partnership as we work to refine this policy. Respectfully, Jorey C. McComas Director of Education Services Remember: We're all working together to support each student's success while building a system that works for everyone.

Inter and Intra District Transfers for 2025-26 Schoo...
Below is some important information regarding obtaining an Interdistrict or Intradistrict Transfer for next school year. Interdistricts: Humboldt County school district superintendents have come to a collective agreement on interdistrict attendance, which includes the process for Interdistrict Transfer Agreements. An Interdistrict Agreement (for students who are currently residing outside of the school district that they wish to attend) must be filed with your district of residence between December 1 and February 1. These must be renewed yearly. Those submitted after the February 1 deadline may be subject to a waitlist or denial. For more information about the agreement you can view our FAQ sheet on our website ( www.nohum.org ) under Parent & Community – Parent Resources . Intradistricts: Intradistrict Agreements are for students residing in the Northern Humboldt High School District but requesting attendance at one of our schools outside of their attendance boundaries. Intradistrict Agreements are good for the remainder of a student's high school term and do not need to be renewed yearly . Please note that all transfers are approved based on program and school capacity and may be subject to denial or a waitlist. Priority will be given to siblings of students already enrolled in school of choice; currently attending a feeder school within the school of choice boundaries; parent/guardian works at school of choice; has already become established at school of choice but moves outside of attendance boundaries; or has been a victim of bullying, as determined through an investigation. Please note, charter schools do not require a transfer to enroll. You do not need to submit a transfer request in order to attend Six Rivers Charter High School . For more information on our intradistrict transfer process, you can view Administrative Regulation 5116.1 on our website as well. For all agreements, the district will determine capacity and give priority to students that apply by the deadline. For applicants who relocate after the February 1 deadline, you will be considered based on the same criteria as those who met the application deadline. It's important to point out that for the 2023-24 school year, there were multiple requests for Arcata High School that were denied or waitlisted due to school and program capacity. Please note, we anticipate this could be an issue as well for the 2024-25 school year and encourage you to attend 8th Grade Parent Nights for not only the school you are applying to attend, but also the school that is within your attendance boundaries. If you are unsure which district you reside in, you can search your address using the HCOE District Locator tool that can be located on their website. To obtain a form, please visit our website . Should you have questions regarding this policy, please call me at 839-6481. Sincerely, ROGER MACDONALD NHUHSD District Superintendent
