Throughout the year, club members raised funds through individual fundraising pages, bake sales, t-shirt sales, and more raising just just over $20,000 for the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. "Seeing them go well beyond their goal says a lot about their effort and commitment," said club sponsor Adam Schultz. "I am incredibly proud of this group. Back row, Club sponsor Emily Wilt, and members Abi Carper, Lily Clark, Lily Grish, Avey Ricks, Luci Thompson, Amelia Santiago. Absent from photo is Sam Carper. Each year, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) honors one school librarian for outstanding collaboration and community service. CHS Librarian Emily Wilt is this year's recipient of this AASL award for the work she has done as the sponsor of CHS's Girls Rising club.  For seven years running, the club has run a donation drive for menstrual products called The Pink Box Project (PBP). In 2022, the club collaborated with the Principles of Construction classes to create wooden boxes– "Menstruation Stations", which were installed in the girls' bathrooms of CHS in 2023. The Menstruation Stations are stocked with pads and tampons, collected from the PBP donation drive, providing free menstrual products to CHS students at the point of need. During the 2024-2025 school year, the project expanded to WMS and LMS as part of graduate Chloe McGowan's Girl Scout Gold Award project, and in 2025 Girls Rising also hosted their first annual Trivia Night to raise funds to keep the menstruation stations stocked throughout the school year.  "The committee agreed that the Pink Box Project stood out as a thoughtfully developed and exceptionally well-executed initiative that has grown in both scope and impact over time,” said committee chair, Lindsey Walters. The project addresses an immediate need while encouraging students to deepen their understanding, recognize differences in opportunity, identify obstacles, and take practical steps to make a positive impact. Club sponsor Emily Wilt is immensely grateful, not only for the recognition from AASL, but for the support of DSC staff and the wider Duneland community. "Our students have a strong sense of service and engagement. Thanks to contributions from my colleagues and donations from local businesses and community members, Girls Rising has been able to turn this idea into a self-sustaining initiative that helps reduce the stigma around menstruation and makes a difference in the lives of our students. I am honored to get to work with these excellent students!"  INSPIRE • ENGAGE • EMPOWER   Exchange Club Talent Show Winners Congratulations to all of the Duneland School students who won the Duneland Exchange Club Talent Show on Saturday, April 18! This year, Administrative Professionals Day was celebrated on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.   Transportation Appreciation Day Each year Transportation Appreciation Day falls on the fourth Tuesday in April, which is April 28 in 2026. Today, we are recognizing all school bus drivers and transportation personnel for taking care of our precious cargo during the school year. Whether they are transporting our kids to school, home, activities, or to sporting events, school bus drivers and transportaton personnel deserve recognition for the job they do.   The Chesterton Music Program finished the 2025-2026 school strong while adding an exciting new distinction for its students and staff. Duneland School Corporation was named among the 2026’s Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) in the country by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation!  This year NAMM was named 1008 school districts as the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education, including only 18 school districts in Indiana. This is the 2nd year in a row that the Duneland School Corporation has been included on this list. The award program recognizes and celebrates outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to and access to music education.  In DSC elementary and intermediate schools, music class is part of the regular curriculum following state standards. Students gain invaluable experience performing in both vocal and instrumental genres. These music teachers (Julia Cardinale, Brummitt Elem.; Kerry Hyde, Bailly Elem.; Laura Carrillo, Yost Elem.; Kierstin Kremer, Jackson Elem.; Lauren Smith, Liberty Elem.; Julie Plant, Liberty Interm.; Joe Nuzzo, Westchester Interm.) lay the foundation for the wide variety of performance opportunities available to students in middle and high school. Beginning in Intermediate School, DSC students at both Liberty and Westchester have the opportunity to join choir, orchestra or band as part of their related arts opportunities. Intermediate ensembles provide the path to enriching performance ensembles at DSC Middle Schools, where over 40% of DSC 5th-8th grade students participate in a band, choir, or orchestra. That's in large part to the top-notch teams of music educators (Liberty team: Vince Arizzi, band; Kristen Garrett, choir; Jessica Christensen, orchestra; Westchester team: Matt Christensen, band; Bella Marquez, choir; Rachel Malott, orchestra) that work to provide meaningful and memorable experiences inside and outside the classroom.  The Chesterton High School Music program sets a high bar for success, regularly achieving local and state recognition. Students are challenged to refine their craft, and the life skills (like teamwork, discipline, time management, and communication) taught in these ensembles are long-lasting. The CHS music team (Jon Flodder, band; Kristin Morris, choir; Brian Grenier, orchestra; Brittney Biddle, administrative assistant) leads the flagship music programs that set DSC apart from other schools. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, DSC answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music.   2026-2027 School Year Registration ONLINE REGISTRATION for the 2026-2027 school year is now open so that ALL DSC students are registered by the end of the 2025-2026 school year. NEW FOR 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR: PARENT/GUARDIAN PIN: As an additional school safety measure, parents and guardians will be required to establish a Parent/Guardian PIN (4–6 digits) that must be provided when calling the school to request a change to a student’s dismissal plan. This includes requests for early release or sign-out for CHS students. The PIN serves as an added layer of identity verification to help school staff confirm that the request is being made by an authorized parent or guardian before a student is released or their dismissal arrangements are changed. FEES: In accordance with Indiana Code, Duneland School Corporation does not charge fees for required curricular materials. Textbooks, instructional software, and other resources necessary for course completion are funded through state reimbursement and/or local school funds. For grades K-4, a student supply fee will be charged to cover personal student supplies, such as notebooks, pencils, and similar items. Once schedules are finalized at the beginning of the school year for grades 5-12, specific course and supply fees will be calculated.  Fees for all grades K-12 will be available for collection through Skyward’s Family Access on September 14, 2026. A reminder notification will be sent once the payment window opens.   Additional fees may apply if textbooks, library materials, or school-issued devices are lost or damaged.    DSC Summer School 2026 Registration Summer School Registration DEADLINE EXTENDED for Grades K-7 Sign up by April 30! At Chesterton High School, we recognize students on the rise, as demonstrated by growth in class participation, motivation, attendance, positive attitude, and/or excellent assessment scores. Each month, we highlight one of the key components that help guide our students in creating a respectful and supportive learning environment. Parents and guardians play an important role in reinforcing these values. We encourage you to talk with your student about how they can stay engaged in their learning, support their peers, and make positive contributions to our school community. Thank you for your continued support in helping our students live out what it means to be a Chesterton Trojan.   CHS Announcements!   CHS Dance Team Tryouts!     Student Resource Time (SRT) - How it is required and how it can help your student succeed! At Chesterton High School, our goal is to ensure that every student has the support they need to be successful, academically, socially, and personally. To better support students when challenges arise, we are continuing to strengthen how we use our schoolwide Student Resource Time (SRT). What is Student Resource Time? Student Resource Time is a built-in period during the school day (6th block) designed to provide targeted support, intervention, and enrichment. This time allows students to receive help as soon as they need it, rather than waiting until difficulties grow larger. How Student Resource Time will be used: During SRT, students may be assigned to one of the following supports: Academic intervention with a teacher to receive additional instruction, complete missing work, or prepare for reassessments Skill-building support focused on organization, study habits, or time management Check-ins with counselors, intervention staff, or administrators for attendance, engagement, or goal setting Enrichment opportunities for students who are current with their coursework and meeting expectations How students are assigned: Assignments are based on current academic progress, attendance, and teacher recommendations. When a student is assigned to an intervention, attendance is expected and required. This ensures that support is timely, consistent, and effective. Why this matters: Student Resource Time is not a punishment. It is a proactive support designed to: Prevent small struggles from becoming larger challenges Provide students with dedicated time and adult support Build skills that lead to long-term success Help students stay on track for graduation and postsecondary goals We believe that every student will need extra support at some point, and Student Resource Time ensures that help is available when it matters most. If you have questions about Student Resource Time or your student’s assignment, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher, counselor, or the main office. Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students.   Attendance Matters at CHS! Good evening CHS families,, An important CHS School Goal for 2025-26 is to achieve a 96% attendance rate.   Currently, our attendance rate at Chesterton High School is:  94.25% As we move further into April, consistency is key. After a stretch of unpredictable spring weather, this is a great week to re-establish routines and stay focused on finishing the semester strong. Each day in class matters as students continue working through important content, projects, and upcoming assessments. Showing up—on time and ready to learn—helps maintain momentum and keeps everyone on track during this busy time of year. Let’s keep pushing forward! Every day counts and every student matters. Thank you for continuing to prioritize attendance at CHS—because ATTENDANCE MATTERS at CHS.   Senior Yard Signs are in!     CHS is in the top 10 in the state for dual credit! Chesterton High School is proud to announce that we are ranked among the top 10 schools in the state of Indiana for students registering for dual credit through our partnership with Ivy Tech Community College, and we are thrilled to share that, for fall-only courses, CHS is ranked #1 in the entire state! This achievement reflects our commitment to preparing every student for life after high school by providing access to rigorous, college-level coursework. Our dual credit opportunities are free to students and families through Ivy Tech, helping our Trojans save significantly on college tuition and get a head start on their postsecondary goals. Congratulations to our students, teachers, and counseling team for making this incredible accomplishment possible!       Dual Credit Instructions! Dual Credit is an opportunity for students at CHS to earn both high school and college credit while enrolled in high school by credentialed high school faculty. Click on the Dual Credit information button below for more information on how your child can earn the Indiana College Core and enter college as a sophomore! Dual Credit Information   CHS staff and students are participating in the Winter Olympics! This year at CHS, our Guiding Coalition, a group of teacher leaders from across the school, developed a theme that we hope to carry throughout the school year and use as a vehicle to connect students, staff, and our entire school community.  In February of 2026, the world will come together for the 25th Olympic Games held in Milan, Italy. As a result, our school theme for the year is The Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics bring together athletes from all over the world who have spent countless hours training, overcoming setbacks, and pushing themselves to reach their personal best. It’s about more than winning medals and competition — it’s about dedication, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the pride that comes from representing something bigger than yourself. Throughout the school year, we’ll connect our journey to the Olympic spirit by focusing on a different theme each month. These themes will inspire us to set goals, face challenges, and work together to achieve great things—just like Olympic athletes do. For August, our theme is Lighting the Torch. The Olympic torch is a powerful symbol of hope, determination, and the start of something great. Lighting the torch marks the beginning of the games, and for us, it marks the start of our school year. Think about the goals you want to accomplish, the positive energy you can bring, and how you can keep that flame burning bright all year long. Let’s begin this year ready to work hard, support one another, and carry the Olympic spirit in everything we do.   CHS Goals for 2025-26   CHS student and parent parking procedures! To help ensure safety and smooth traffic flow, please review the following parking and transportation reminders for the 2025–26 school year. We strongly encourage all students who do not drive to take their assigned school bus each day. This helps reduce congestion on campus and ensures students arrive on time. If a parent/guardian must transport their child, please adhere to the following procedures: Drop-Off Locations: Door 34 and Door 31 only. Pick-Up Locations: Door 34 and Door 31 only. Student Drivers: All student drivers must apply for a CHS parking pass from the main office. Parking placards must be displayed in the vehicle at all times. Due to the ongoing soccer renovation project, only students enrolled in a CTE class may park in the west faculty lot, and they must park in the row closest to 11th Street. We appreciate your cooperation in following these procedures, which enable us to maintain a safe and efficient environment for our students, staff, and families.   Cell Phone Policy On July 1, 2024, the Indiana Legislature enacted a new law for all K-12 schools in Indiana. The law reads as follows: Electronic Devices (P.L. 108-1994, HEA 1202): Wireless Communication Devices Per IC 20-26-5-40.7: the use of wireless communication devices, including but not limited to cellular telephones, tablet computers, laptop computers, gaming devices, smartwatches, etc., is strictly prohibited during academic class periods unless explicitly authorized by the teacher for educational purposes. Students are permitted to use a wireless communication device in the event of a health or safety emergency or to manage health care as specifically defined in the student’s Individualized Health Plan (IHP), Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and/or Section 504 Plan. A wireless communication device is defined by Indiana law as any portable wireless device that has the capability to provide voice, messaging, or other data communication between two (2) or more parties. Chesterton High School’s policy regarding wireless communication devices includes cell phones, earbuds/headphones, smartwatches, and any other auxiliary device that can be paired with a cellular phone. When a student is directed by a teacher or staff member to follow the established classroom phone/wireless communication policy, noncompliant students will be referred to the office and are subject to disciplinary action for insubordination. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us create a focused and productive learning environment at CHS.   NorthShore School Clinic new location DSC NorthShore Clinic has moved The DSC NorthShore Health Center has moved and is now located at 601 W Morgan Avenue at Door #4. The CHS Gold Winter Guard competed on March 21, at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association (IHSCGA) Class A Finals at Center Grove High School. In their initial round of the Dirks Division, the group placed 13th, but were able to move up to 10th place, an incredible achievement! Being the first year the team was split into Varsity and JV divisions, it is an exciting accomplishment for a smaller team at a more competitive level. Additionally, Senior co-section leaders Brianna Manning and Lucy Rutkowski earned IHSCGA scholarships. Only seven scholarships were awarded, and these talented CHS students were awarded two of them! Director Jeffory DeHenes was thrilled at this season’s success. “The students pushed through an incredibly tough season, and to see their hard work pay off is a very proud coach moment. We were the only group in our round to move up not just one spot, but three, which really shows the work these students are willing to commit to," said DeHenes. "I couldn't be more happy with the work done this season, and we've just begun this journey into higher class color guard”. The CHS Gold Winter Guard’s 2025 show, entitled “Exit Wounds”, explores themes of being sheltered or kidnapped. The performance takes you through the story of how it feels to be lied to, manipulated, and controlled. The musical selections in “Exit Wounds” draw from “Runnin Up That Hill” originally by Kate Bush, but arranged by Baltic House Orchestra. Members of the CHS Gold Winter Guard include: Ava Garland, Madison Jackson, Brianna Manning, Addison Mason, Samantha Mills, Natalie Newman, Kaylin O'Daniel, Kenzie O'Daniel, Baylee Parrott, Lucy Rutkowski, Caryss Vandiver, and Caprie Wilson. Section leaders are Brianna Manning and Lucy Rutkowski. Prop Crew members include: Bart Hardwick, Herschel Hardwick, Nathan Bolding, Robert Mueller, William Newman, Vinny Mueller, Katie Radliffe, Jeremy Garland, and Tonya Garland. CHS Winter Guard Director Jeffory DeHenes leads the Gold Winter Guard, while Assistant Director Brittany Juarez takes point on the Maroon Winter Guard. Brianna Shaw and Christiana Gault assist both teams as technical staff. Robert Mueller is in charge of building and maintaining our amazing props. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Winter Guard near and far in this journey. This type of sports program takes a village for it all to work out; it has all been worth it! If you are an 8-12th grade student, find working with a team enjoyable, and are willing to try something new, join us on April 7 from 6:00-8:00 PM at CHS for Trojan Guard preseason as we prepare for our fall season.   CHS All-State Band members! Currently, our attendance rate at Chesterton High School is:  94.25% This is an INCREASE from last week’s percentage…GREAT JOB!!! As we move into April, the weeks ahead will move quickly, with important learning, projects, and assessments on the horizon. Being present each day helps students stay on track, reconnect with their classes, and continue making progress toward their goals. Let’s start this stretch strong! Every day counts and every student matters. Thank you for showing up ready to learn and helping attendance stay strong at CHS—because ATTENDANCE MATTERS at CHS.   Senior Yard Signs are in!     CHS is in the top 10 in the state for dual credit! April 2, 2026 Vol. 60 No. 32   STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS CHS students excel at Japanese Speech Contest Left to right, Isabelle Cain, Emily Ponce, Izzy Grigsby, Maeci Mullet, Kassidy Robinson, and Rylin Rietman Six seniors from Chesterton High School delivered speeches at the 40th Annual Japanese Speech Contest on Saturday, March 21, in Chicago, sponsored by the Consulate General of Japan. The contest brings together Japanese language learners from elementary through college levels across ten Midwestern states. Emily Ponce placed second, Maeci Mullet placed third, and Izzy Grigsby placed fourth. Rylin Rietman received the Japan America Society of Chicago Award, Isabelle Cain received the IATJ (Illinois Association of Teachers of Japanese) Award, and Kassidy Robinson received the JIC (Japan Information Center) Award. All participants are Japanese 5 students, taught by Aki Tsugawa.   All-State Band Congratulations to four CHS music students who performed with the Indiana Bandmasters All-State Band this weekend. In the past decade, only 10 other CHS students earned placement. Regarded as the most prestigious honor band in Indiana, the All-State Band employs a competitive 3-stage audition process to select their 87 participants. Vishva Bharath (percussion, 9th), Katie Newbanks (piccolo, 12th grade), Jayden Hughes (tuba, 11th), and Abigail Vidt (clarinet, 11th) earned spots, and had the opportunity to rehearse and perform challenging music under nationally recognized conductors.   Gold Winter Guard earns 10th at State The CHS Gold Winter Guard competed on March 21, at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association (IHSCGA) Class A Finals at Center Grove High School. Science Olympiad Teams place at State Above, front row, left to right, Virginia Murray, Galvin Ellis, Robert Hundt, Jackson Lukes, Daelyn Dolph, and Danielle Burchuk. Sylvester was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 98th percentile on the Level 3 - 2026 National German Exam for High School Students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Over 12,000 students participated in the program. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, he submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee comprised of high school teachers and college professors of German. Sylvester is one of 36 outstanding German students selected from across the US to receive the award. The study trip includes round‐trip air transportation to Germany from a US airport, a homestay in a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. The study trip, now in its 66th year, is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany. “This year’s prize winners are some of the finest students in the US,” said Michael Shaughnessy, Executive Director of the AATG. “The prize is a great reward for excellence in learning German—and the best way to better get to know a fascinating language and culture through firsthand experiences living with a German family and attending school.” Sylvester and the other winners will travel to Germany this summer. He is a student of Justin Martinson, German teacher at Chesterton High School. Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of language, literature and culture of the German‐speaking countries.   Young Citizenship Awards Each year, the Duneland Exchange Club (DEC) presents the Young Citizenship award to a student who is an all-around good citizen. Each month we highlight one of the key components that help guide our students in creating a respectful and supportive learning environment. For March, we are focusing on the “E” in A.R.E. – Engaged. Being Engaged means more than simply attending class. It reflects how our students actively contribute to the school community by encouraging others, making positive connections, driving meaningful class participation, and striving for helpful and purposeful interactions throughout the school day. When students are engaged, they help create classrooms where everyone feels supported, valued, and motivated to learn. We encourage students to look for ways to demonstrate engagement by: Participating actively in classroom discussions and activities Supporting and encouraging classmates Building positive relationships with peers and staff Contributing to a productive and respectful learning environment Throughout the month, staff members will recognize students who exemplify what it means to be Engaged as part of the Trojans A.R.E. program. An important CHS School Goal for 2025-26 is to achieve a 96% attendance rate.   Currently, our attendance rate at Chesterton High School is:  94.34% With Spring Break just around the corner next week, it can be tempting to start the countdown early—but this week still offers important opportunities for learning, collaboration, and finishing strong before the break. As the excitement of the NCAA tournament tips off this week, think of attendance like advancing in the bracket: every round counts. Showing up each day helps students stay in the game academically, keep up with assignments, and head into Spring Break feeling confident about their progress. Let’s finish strong before the break! Every day counts and every student matters. Thanks for continuing to support strong attendance at CHS—because ATTENDANCE MATTERS at CHS. To have both groups competing at state finals is very special.”  Winter Guard Director Jeffory DeHenes and Assistant Director Brittany Juarez, are equally impressed by the parent support. “We could not have done it without our dedicated group of parents, the student prop crew, and especially, Robert Mueller, who took charge of building all our fantastic door and wall props. It takes community buy-in to build props, feed and clothe the students, transport the equipment, and then travel with the group each week," said Dehenes and Juarez. Inspire • Engage • Empower Awards from Teaching & Learning Chesterton High School recognized several students and staff members for their remarkable contributions to the CHS community. INSPIRE Award The Inspire Award is presented to Trojans who demonstrate exemplary leadership. Leadership is not just about holding a title—it is about taking initiative, supporting others, and fostering an environment where all students can thrive. Inspire Award recipients consistently embody the mindsets, behaviors, and skills necessary to succeed in school and beyond. Evan Linzy, Fotoula Earth, Chevy Grcich, Jenna Bircher, and Chris Melton, all Peer Mentors at CHS, have made a tremendous impact on student success this year. Their dedication to helping their peers extends far beyond the classroom. All of these mentors ensure that students remain engaged in the learning process by keeping them on task, offering academic assistance, and providing encouragement on a daily basis. They actively check in with students who may be struggling, particularly during SRT, ensuring that no student feels left behind. Their unwavering commitment to their peers has fostered a more supportive and inclusive learning environment at CHS. In addition to celebrating CHS student leaders, outstanding educators who work tirelessly to support student success were also recognized with the Inspire Award. Crystal South, Suzanne Amling, Natalie Kaczmarski, Jen Breitzka, Jacob Lukach, Brian Hennigar, Phil Long, Mark Peterson, and Jen Jendrzejczyk, all dedicated CHS teachers, have gone above and beyond to ensure that students reach their full potential, embodying the very essence of what it means to Inspire. Their dedication, time, and expertise have made a lasting impact—ensuring that each student is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to Believe and Achieve. The students they have supported have faced significant academic challenges throughout their school careers. However, through the power of positive relationships—many of which began in summer school—these teachers have motivated and guided the students to achieve their absolute best. Their tireless efforts in the summer, classroom, and SRT have played a crucial role in positioning these students to graduate on time. These teachers helped this cohort of students earn 144 credits collectively during summer school and have played a vital role in helping this cohort achieve an on track to graduate rate of 95% after the first semester. ENGAGE Award The Engage Award recognizes Trojans who demonstrate exemplary behaviors by using their unique talents to respectfully connect with their school and community. Engagement is about taking an active role in fostering a positive school culture, and these students have gone out of their way to uplift and support those around them. Bristol Alicea, Tyler Arney, Emily Hoffman, Braedyn Feero, and Lily Zarndt, have each demonstrated what it means to be truly engaged members of our school community. Whether it’s providing academic support to fellow students or simply offering a listening ear to a peer in need, these students have made a difference in the lives of others. They lead by example through their respectful and kind interactions with both students and teachers. Their willingness to step up and make a positive impact on their peers helps create a school culture where all students feel valued and supported. EMPOWER Award The Empower Award honors Trojans who exhibit remarkable growth and achievement through resilience and excellence in their pursuit of academic success. These students have demonstrated perseverance, determination, and a strong commitment to their education. Hugh Rasnick, Sophia Perez, Josiah Wilson, Chloe Herbert, and Chris Thielen, have all gone above and beyond in their academic journey thus far to successfully earn the required credits needed to be on track to graduate. Their hard work and dedication reflect their unwavering commitment to personal and academic growth. Each of these students has faced challenges along the way, but rather than being discouraged, they have remained focused on their goals and their future. Their perseverance is a testament to their strength of character, and they continue to develop a solid foundation for life beyond high school.   CHS Swimming & Diving Team Congratulations to the Chesterton High School Girls Swimming & Diving Team on another outstanding season.
